TL;DR
Sorting Strategies
One of the most debated topics in LEGO storage is how to sort the pieces. A common recommendation is to avoid sorting by color, as it can make finding specific pieces difficult [2:1],
[5:2]. Instead, sorting by part type is generally more efficient and practical. This method involves categorizing pieces into major groups such as bricks, plates, tiles, slopes, and Technic parts
[2:1],
[4:5].
Storage Containers
For storage containers, many users recommend non-LEGO branded options like Arko Mills and Sterilite for their sturdiness and affordability [3:4],
[3:5]. These options are often available at local stores or online and can be more cost-effective than official LEGO storage solutions. Some users also suggest using plastic bins from dollar stores, which are perfect for smaller pieces like 1-stud-wide tiles
[3:1].
DIY and Creative Solutions
For those interested in DIY solutions, second-hand cardboard parts bins from manufacturing can be a great option. They are sturdy, stable, and easy to label, making them ideal for organizing a large collection [1:1]. Additionally, some users have found success with using ziploc bags or solo cups while waiting for a good deal on larger storage units
[3:5],
[4:8].
Accessibility and Space Considerations
For those with limited space or budget constraints, it's important to create a system that allows for easy access and organization. One user recommended using IKEA bins with hot-glued representative pieces on the front, making it easier for children to find what they need [5:2]. Another suggestion was to use totes or ziploc bags for initial sorting, especially if dealing with a large, mixed collection
[4:1].
Online Resources
Lastly, for more inspiration and detailed setups, the subreddit r/legostorage is dedicated to sharing and discussing LEGO storage solutions. It offers a wealth of information and community support for anyone looking to optimize their LEGO organization [2:2],
[5:1].
Hi everyone,
I'm on a mission to find the best way to store and organize my LEGO collection, and I would love to hear your recommendations!
Please share your photos, links to products, and any tips you have. I'm excited to see your setups and get some inspiration!
Thanks in advance for your help!
Unopened sets in moving boxes labeled “Building Materials” stacked in a spare closet.
a) we are now coming out of our having babies phase
b) we just acquired more living space so these boxes used to live in our storage locker. They were labeled building materials because we were paranoid they’d be the first to be stolen lol
It’s about to be Christmas morning in this house. We plan to introduce Harry Potter to the kids along side the Lego builds. Until then we continue to be inspired by all of your innovative storage solutions!
Not trying to be rude, but “show me your creative storage solutions” is literally the point of this subreddit. Scroll and search.
Unhelpful for those of us searching for information 6 months later. Searches lead me to posts where users tell other users to use the search tool. Pointing out the function of the search tool may not be useful for current and future reddit users.
There are plenty of suggestions in this thread and by searching “storage solutions” in the subreddit—the search tool will always be helpful, it’s not like old posts are archived and unavailable. Best of luck to you!
Small draw units and larger plastic draws from my local DIY store. Sorted by part type , smaller or larger amounts sorted by colour and part type

I don't like plastic bins, they're too loud. I use second hand cardboard parts bins from manufacturing. They're sturdy and stable and easy to label. Because they're long and skinny and open at the front, you can see what's in there, you can fit lots of parts, and the narrow width means you can see lots of different categories at once.
I have about 50 categories in various sizes taking up one 1m x 2m bookshelf
"sturdy, and stable, and easy to label"
Have you done a search on this sub? Lots of great info there.
Hi! Aside from all my finished builds I have a LOT of loose Lego pieces and I’d really like to be able to organise the different types of pieces so I can attempt to create my own builds for the first time since I was a kid. I’ve been scrolling for ages but everything just seems too small. Additionally, I’m disabled and don’t have a ton of money. Does anyone have any recommendations for good storage with easy access? The system I’ve got going now is less than ideal 😅 This isn’t even all of it. Thanks in advance!

1: don't sort by color. Finding a red 1x1 in a sea of red parts is impossible.
2: your collection only needs to be as sorted as useful to you. If there are big categories you don't use a lot (say, over large bricks or wheels or Bionicle pieces) it's fine to just throw all those in one bin.
3: sort by major categories first. Bricks vs Plates vs Tiles vs Slopes/Curves vs Technic pieces, etc.
4: Break those big categories down further to the individual part level (or as granular as your storage system allows).
5: this guy describes the most effective way to mechanically do the sort. It's a sorting algorithm basically. The goal is to move efficiently, rather than perfectly. You'll get to them all eventually. https://youtu.be/dmisEA2PcGc?si=ozdduydCM-b_LLF0
6: I really like Akro Mils bins. Your mileage may vary.
7: The Brick Architect has a sorting guide and free labels you can download and print.
8: Embrace the sort. Find some good music or a good YouTube channel and zen out. :)
Good luck!!
Thank you I appreciate this! I definitely learned to not sort by colour the hard way 😅
In comparison to non-lego branded organizer sets. I have a handful collectible mini figures, full Lego sets, Lego bricks and technic parts that I am trying to keep visually distinct and easy to find. I need a good way to store and organize and store them on demand.
Are Lego Branded containers the best bang for your buck, portable storage containers or are there other storage options that are better? I'm moving around a lot so I need things that can be folded up and transported easily.
Lol no, don't use LEGO branded boxes. Check this out:

omg, theres a lego storage sub thread? that is awesome.
No way in hell, arko mills and sterilite are the best kinds of storage.
Absolutely not. I only grab that stuff on sale. If I need a new unit or a few drawers I literally use ziploc bags and solo cups while I wait for a good deal. Those containers will be on discount somewhere within the next 3 months so just be patient. Generally I am getting Steralite storage units.
My local dollar store chain has plastic bins that are meant for beads and that kind of crafting supplies, but i find are perfect for sorting the million flavors of 1-stud-wide tiles that I can never find in the bottom of a bigger bin. And they only cost like $4.
So I'm back in my childhood home for a little bit and have been wanting to rebuild my old Lego star wars sets however all my Lego is jumbled up in one massive box and its a mess and a pain to shive through it when trying to build old sets. Would anyone have any good storage system recommendations?
Recently my small collection has outgrown the "toss everything into few bins" size. Bought this drawer from Amazon. Its been such a game changer.
Thank you!! I’m not able to get a new storage system but that’s definitely something I’ll look into in the future
Mine were in rubbermaid tubs all mixed up and blasted into all separate pieces a month ago. I dumped everything out onto one big open floor and separated a little bit but also started building a couple sets at a time and as the pile dwindled down it got easier and faster.
Sorting by colour maybe?
Don’t sort by pieces way easier when you need a part to find the color
I started sorting my old stuff by piece type..it takes a while but once youre done its easy to find what ur looking for
Depending on the size of your sets I'd first start off by either purchasing some totes or some ziploc bags to put them in. Next, go through your pile of shame and see if you can pull recognizable pieces from the sets and put them into the bins/bags. Make sure you've got labels on whatever you're using. After that you can go one of two routes: Sort the remaining pieces by color or by piece type. Sorting by color is by far the easier option in the short term but it will be a giant pain in the ass once you actually go looking for parts. Sorting by piece type can be more frustrating up front but makes you life easier in the long run. You don't have to get super detailed at first, maybe just sort into bricks, plates, wing shapes, technic pieces. Even doing that little bit will make your life easier.
Thank you that’s super helpful I think I’ll stop by the store and get myself some zip bags
Hi everyone!
My son and I have recently gotten really into Lego, and we feel so fortunate to have built up quite a collection of Lego sets. However, we're struggling with how to store and organize them all.
We’ve tried sorting the pieces by size, putting one-square pieces in one box, two-square pieces in another, and so on. But we’re pretty sure there’s a more efficient and practical way to organize them.
If you have any ideas, pictures, or recommendations for storage solutions—like boxes or containers you’ve found particularly useful—please share! Links to stores are also very welcome.
Thanks so much in advance!
I am a fan of organizing by part type and not by color. It is up to you.
We use the Ikea bins and hot glue the representative pieces on the front. It's not perfect, but I my kids want a technics beam, or a wing piece, or a 1x plate, they know where to go.
The hard part is sorting.
My kids are 7YO and 5YO and they just arent in the mindset to follow sorting rules at cleanup. The bottom blue bins are "Decoration Bins" which are really just unsorted LEGO.
YMMV
Thanks!
Look into r/legostorage it's dedicated for that kind of thing
Thank you!
Sorry if this is covered often. I'm trying to organize my daughters LEGO collection. By estimate she's got about 5k+ LEGOs and it's slowly growing. She's only turning 7 so I don't want anything too crazy or too expensive. Just something to help her from having to dump a giant pile of LEGOs on the find all the pieces she needs.
I found a good article, but it didn't really give any links to what I'm looking for.
My idea was to get like 12 or so boxes that can stack relatively neatly and that are short but wide so she can look through em without having to dump em out. I'd like em all to be the same size, but some with dividers for less abundant groups of piece types.
I've been having difficulty shopping online because there's a million different options and often times the pictures are misleading to the actual size and whatnot.
Before I go store to store looking, I was wondering if any of you guys had links or specific brands or whatnot that you know from experience work well with what I'm going after.
Again, cheaper the better, but I don't want crap. Clip secured lid would be nice, but not a necessity. Shallow and wide, but still leaving a manageable footprint when stacked. Removable compartments or dividers would be nice. That's about all I can think of.
Thanks for any help.
We have the large playmat bags. Ours are from Play & Go on Amazon. They're great because they spread out, so you can have everything all over the floor, so good for creative building, but then just scoop it all up in one easy action at the end.
Sure do wish the mods would set up a FAQ where these kinds of questions could be answered without having 3-4 posts a day asking the exact same thing.
Wait, there is one..
r/legostorage is a better place for this question.
That said Steralite 6qt shoe boxes have snap on lids, stack and you can get them in 10 packs for less than $10 at Walmart. Should be the right solution for your current size.
Akro Mills makes those in two styles, one is the one shown (two drawer sizes) and the other has 8 rows of 8 drawers each. I have a total of 16 here. For drawer dividers, I used to chop up unwanted LEGO NBA boxes and cereal boxes. Those bins are workhorses.
If you do it carefully, and you have some wall space (maybe behind a door) cut a piece of 1-inch thick plywood, screw it to the wall studs using drywall screws. Then get some wood screws (forget the exact size, but they are stainless steel), I marked out a grid on the plywood, started 4 screws for each storage box, positioned the box onto the screws, then it slipped down maybe 1/2 inch. Those have been up on the wall for over 10 years with no issues.
One other interesting detail about the small drawers ... they are 6 studs wide. Dividing one in half, gives you two 8 stud long storage spaces (so 16 studs long undivided).
I use Akro Mills drawers for the bulk of my pieces, Sterilite Divided Storage case for technic pieces, and Sterilite Stack and Carry case for mini-figures, mini-fig accessories, and animals.
Then I just use a medium sized bin for pieces that I only have like 2-3 of or specialty pieces, and one for vehicle stuff (like wheels, boats, and what not)
I will say what others already have. Akron Mills makes the best ones. They wall mount and stack nicely. The drawers stay in place for the most part. Also the company has been around long enough to give you some piece of mind that they'll probably still be around in a couple of years when you decide you need to get more. They aren't the cheapest mind you but worth the money.
Everyone is mentioning Akro Mills, but I personally think IRIS look nicer and are better quality. A little pricier but way worth it IMO
We have IRIS and they get heavily used by our 6 year old and my husband.
I use 9 of them , Akro Mills. Arguably I need about 27 more but I ran out of wall space. And my bulk lego is really too large for bins that small unless I sort down to individual element and color.
I’ve gone hodge podge over the years and looking to invest in a good system for organizing larger collections of blocks down to unique pieces in a way that is cohesive. Interested in others methods
The two company names you need to know are Sterilite and Akro Mils. I have a combination of both.
r/legostorage
Hey everyone, I’m after some ideas for storing mine and my sons Lego pieces. Combined we have quite a lot (maybe not as much as some but around 5000-6000 pcs) and really need somewhere to store it for easy access and usage. I live in Australia, so I’m assuming that would limit some of the suggestions/ideas. Even some pics of what you and others are using so I can compare and get something similar. Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Bead and floss boxes with movable dividers?
Check out r/legostorage
I second this. Also from Australia and the ideas you get from that subreddit can easily be replicated with things from Bunnings or Kmart
Seconded, although don’t go the cheap Anko divided compartment trays, the orange dividers are way too flimsy and loose and stuff is always sneaking under them.
I just grabbed Sterlite drawers from walmart, hope that helps
I have two 4(put extra drawer on them!) drawer sterilite carts and one 5 drawer sterilite cart I also have one compartment drawer Is there any way I can plan a sorting guide to apply to these containers? So I know which parts to put where? I’m very new to this and don’t know the names to the more complex parts. I hope the links went through.. if they didn’t I’ll post photos in a response! Any help is appreciated!
I would say your sterilite drawers are too big (at least the 3-drawer cart and the 3 drawers of the 5-drawer cart). Having large, shallow drawers is best for finding pieces.
A way to more effectively use those big drawers would be to sub-divide them. Using ziplock backs is one way. I personally don't like this, but when I do use ziplock bags, I use the ones with the zipper on them.
As far as guides, /u/tomalphin's is top-notch. You can also look at his labels as well the Bricklink.com's piece categories.
My recommendation is to sort by piece type and start with broad categories. E.g. start by sorting out your bricks from everything else. Then sort your bricks into 2xN (e.g. 2x2, 2x3, 2x4...) from the other bricks. If you want to then sort by color or particular brick, do that. Then repeat for plates, slopes, or whatever other categories you go with. This will allow you to figure out how much space you need for what parts.
Lastly, for your compartment drawers, find small pieces you use often. I'd recommend: 1x1 plates, cheese slopes and tiles go in these (at least that is what I do).
Yes, check out the LEGO Storage Guide at https://brickarchitect.com/guide — I wrote it!
Sincerely,
—Tom
P.S. Happy to answer any questions you might have after giving it a read!
I have your book on building lego! masterful
I'm so glad you like it! It's been a real pleasure connecting with LEGO fans around the world who have enjoyed my book or other resources I've created like the LEGO Storage Guide :-)

You are amazing! Some day I'll have the space and time (motivation) to take all your advice and sort out the mess I managed to build up. Keep it up!
Thanks!!!
A task that never ends. You’ll be organizing your collection as long as you love LEGO.
Lol I’ve tried many times before! I’m never satisfied with how it is tho! 🤣
It gets out of hand quickly. Certainly has in my case.
looks around the room YEP.
Definitely give that Brick Architect guide a read, but you should also give the "Evolution of Sorting" link a read, there's a reason why it's listed on the subreddit's sidebar.
Also it's kinda fun to read an internet post from 2001.
