What Redditors are Saying

Best Local Crafts in the Philippines

Regional Handicrafts and Artisans

The Philippines is rich in local crafts, with each region offering unique products. In Bacolod, places like the Negros Museum and the Negros Showroom are recommended for exploring local handicrafts and art [1]. The Bicol region is known for its handcrafted native goods made from materials like nito vines, abaca, buri, and raffia, which are available through small businesses like Kiera Native Products on Shopee [2].

Traditional Pasalubong (Souvenirs)

When considering non-perishable souvenirs, traditional Filipino snacks such as barquillos, piaya, and pinasugbo are popular choices [3:1][3:3]. Coffee Culture’s Negros blend is another highly recommended product [3:6]. For those traveling abroad, commercially packed items like Goldilocks Polvoron, dried mangoes, and Auro chocolates are suggested due to strict biosecurity regulations in countries like Australia [4:2].

Unique Craftsmanship

For those interested in supporting local artisans and sustainable living, products made from natural fibers and materials are a great option. Items such as baskets, trays, and home decor crafted from indigenous materials not only support local economies but also offer a piece of Filipino culture [2]. Additionally, Dutch bikes are noted for their larger sizes, catering to taller individuals, reflecting the adaptability and customization possible within local craftsmanship [5:8].

DIY and Customizable Collectibles

While not traditional crafts, customizable collectibles like Gundam model kits and 30 Minute Missions offer an engaging way to explore creativity. These kits are modular and affordable, making them a popular choice among collectors in the Philippines [5:3][5:6]. This reflects the innovative spirit found within the local craft scene, where customization and personal expression are valued.

In summary, the Philippines offers a diverse array of local crafts, from traditional handicrafts and pasalubong to innovative DIY collectibles. Each region provides unique products that reflect the rich cultural heritage and creativity of the Filipino people.

ORIGINAL POST

Hello, I am visiting for the weekend from the US to see family and I am interested in exploring some places in Bacolod. I am specifically interested in places that might have art books, zines, local handicrafts, or history. A couple places I've seen recommended are the Negros Museum, Orange Project, and the Negros Showroom. I love DIY arts and also learning about pre-colonial history, so if anyone has any recommendations, that would be appreciated. Thanks!

For Diy craft, you might want to check CECO and Arthur's Pottery

Orange Project and the whole of Art District is good to take pix in. Silay also has some ancestral homes you can visit. The Ruins in Talisay is best for sunset.

best non-perishable pasalubong

Posted by ba_dump_tss · in r/Bacolod · 15 days ago

hi guys, i know this has been asked a hundred times bc I did check, but this is a teensy bit specific. do you have any non-perishable (so no cakes, inasal, napoleones 💔) or at least ang indi maglain from 5-ish days of purchase na pasalubong recos aside from shirts, magnets, and keychains? If amo man gid na sa 3, where to get good quality kag unique merch?

i'll be meeting colleagues in luzon next month, kaso will be arriving a week prior para mag gala by myself. I was thinking native/kanlaon coffee, v&w na snacks jar (?), usual bong bongs/merczi/virgies? Anything to add?

Also additional Q: ano gid ang pinaka namit na biscocho, barquiron, polvoron, and butterscotch? daw palarehas lang sila bi sakon, so need outsiders' opinion 🤪

Best pasalubong from the Philippines

Posted by Desperate-Staff-7745 · in r/phtravel · 7 months ago

Will be bringing some pasalubong from Ph to our Australian friends. Any recos?

If chicharon, where to buy the best chicharon? Pls not Bulacan ‘cause I doubt it 😅

We’re planning to bring:

  1. Siling pula - any recos where to buy it from? Davao’s sili are the best imo, but we can’t just fly in to Davao for that 🤣
  2. Chicharon
  3. Dried mangos - possibly from Kultura but not rlly sure
  4. Polvoron from Goldilocks
  5. Ube Jam from Good Shepherd but it’s in Baguio 🥲

Nothing much on my list. Thank you!

Australia has one of the strictest biosecurity borders, so please avoid bringing chicharon and, most especially, anything with seeds like sili—it’s definitely not allowed.

If you’re buying pasalubong, make sure it’s commercially packed as much as possible.

What I usually bring back with me:
✔️ Goldilocks Polvoron

✔️ Dried Mangoes

✔️ Auro Chocolates (a great contender against their Cadbury, especially with the unique flavors)

✔️ Local childhood candies like Yakee, etc., as long as they’re commercially packed.

And don’t forget to declare everything on your Arrival Card to avoid fines! 🫰

Dried mangoes na from Cebu/ Guimaras yung variant - can be bought from local supermarkets

Local kutkutin or chips like Boy Bawang instead of Chicharon (strict ang countries sa pagpasok ng pork products because if ASF)

Auro chocolates

Yes to this, OP. Dried mangoes are way cheaper in supermarkets than from Kultura. Last I bought last month, P60-P70 ang difference for the 7D 200g variant.

OP needs to choose lang if he prefers the real dried mango. Ang daming mura na dried mango sa grocery na puree na lang pala. Iba pa din ang 7D brand.

Wag fresh food at pork. Baka ma feature ka sa border patrol 😆

Recommendations:

  1. Boy bawang
  2. Edelyn peanuts
  3. Banana crunch (exciting saging)
  4. Dried mangoes samahan mo ng unripe kasi unique sa kanila yun
  5. Banana catsup, sinigang mix - natuwa sila dito 😆

Any good action figures or toys i can assemble/build that i can collect?

Posted by ONIYARU · in r/ActionFigures · 5 months ago

Im from the Philippines so finding toys/action figures that are in my budget is pretty hard. I've started collecting gundam but its expensive while i want to collect hot wheels but it doesn't have any customizability so i was wondering if there are toys that have the criteria

Criteria:

-Cheap(roughly maximum 300 php idk the conversion rate)

-customizable

-playable(optional)

-can be collected(ofc since i want to show off my nerdy side HAHAHA)

-As much as possible not any superhero like marvel or dc figures

According to Google 300php is about $5 USD

So the answer to your question is Blokees

2 upvotes on reddit
Hachura · 5 months ago

They're another type of plamo but 30 Minute Missions (30MM) might fit all your categories. They're cheaper than gundam kits since they're original IP/design, but completely modular and swappable because of universal peg/hole system.

You could ask a friend/relative who's an OFW or resident in Japan to buy it for you. Or you could opt for those "pasabuy" pages on Facebook. The good thing with these options is that deliveries will come in groups and so your payment for shipping will most likely be lessened.

1 upvotes on reddit
hiimnewrn · OP · 4 years ago

Do you have any source or page that has the product? Just asking thanks!

1 upvotes on reddit
joneslawgaming · 4 years ago

Sorry but I don't know any that sells particularly mousepads let alone Artisans. But you could ask if they can find it for you. I just happen to have a FB friend that promotes and shares posts from a pasabuy page. Let me look it up and I'll DM you the page, maybe you can ask if they can find it for you. Their posts vary from anime toy figurines to Japanese grocery foods.
