TL;DR
Armor Sets with Spell Buffs
In Elden Ring, certain armor pieces provide specific bonuses to spellcasting. The Snow Witch Hat is particularly beneficial for those focusing on cold sorcery [1:1]. Similarly, Azur's and Lusat's Glintstone Crowns enhance comet and Lusat's spells, respectively, making them valuable for players who specialize in these types of magic
[1:1].
Intelligence Boosting Sets
For mages looking to maximize their intelligence stat, Rennala's Queen Set is a popular choice due to its headpiece offering a +3 intelligence boost without any negative modifiers [2:1]. This set is lightweight and provides decent armor for a cloth-wearing mage, making it suitable for those who prefer to avoid melee combat through rolling.
Fashion and Aesthetics
While stats are important, many players prioritize the appearance of their character. Sets like the Astrologer's, Carian Knight, Snow Witch, and Alberich's are noted for their aesthetic appeal [1:3]. Players often choose armor that looks good on their character while still allowing for effective gameplay, such as maintaining a mid-roll
[1:4].
General Recommendations
For those seeking general advice on mage armor, it's recommended to explore various sets and find what suits your playstyle. Some players suggest using lighter armor for maximum mobility, while others might opt for heavier gear if they engage in melee combat [2:4]. Additionally, players can refer to resources like RankedBoost for comprehensive lists of armor sets
[2:2].
Crafting and Customization
Although not directly related to Elden Ring, discussions from other games highlight the importance of crafting and customizing gear to fit specific builds. Enchantments and customizations can significantly enhance a mage's effectiveness in combat [4:1]
[5:4]. While Elden Ring doesn't offer the same level of customization, selecting the right combination of armor pieces can still optimize performance based on your chosen playstyle.
Rogiers I guess and whatever helmet you want
Rogier's armor set only helps weapon skills. Not spells. At least according to the wiki.
You right
Anything that looks good.
Navy Hood, Noble's Set, Astrologer's Set, Carian Knight Set, Snow Witch Set, Alberich's Set, Rogier's Set, etc. can all look pretty good.
Rennala's dildo crown (+3 int) and whatever else you wanna wear that still let's you mid roll
Ok
Whatever looks the best on your character
What you want, but there’s also armor that buffs certain spells. Snow witch hat buffs cold sorcery, azurs crown buffs comet spells, and lusats crown buffs lusats spells.
Right now I am level 46, got Traveler Set but I swapped the legs for Beast Champion to level it out a bit, and I got the Meteorite staff. What’s better than what I have currently?
I think this will help:

Can anyone explain how armors work in Elden RIng?
I'm 40 hours in. Still in my Astrologer's set and can't find anything better. Except for the super ugly Twin Sage Glintstone Crown that gives +6 int.
Now, Queen of the Full moon looks OK, but the armor and leggings seem to be worse than start game Astrologer's grab. Arm piece is better than Astrologers and hat is worse than the ugly crown.
Am I missing something? Or is it actually hot it is? The starter set is better than one of the major bosses set?
Also, why does Raya Lucarian Sorcerer Set listed here as S Tier? Crown +6 int is good, but other pieces mostly have worse stats than E Tier Astrologer's set.
The queen set you can buy after beating her has +int head piece with no negative modifiers, which is very nice. If you are playing as a sorc then you're prolly rockin 1 of 2 paths. Either low weight (max roll) or max med weight for med roll with max armor (melee).
If you are playing as a cloth wearing, staff toting, max rolling sorc then the queen set is quite good. It's very light with decent armor for cloth and nice resistances since you are trying to not be in melee via rolling.
If you are playing as a DMGS 2h or dual wielding katanas you'll be rocking med rolls focusing more on armor. In which case you are not going to be wearing mage armor anymore and prolly go with carian knight armor for a armor/mag def mix.
I wouldn't look at the armor sets as being tiered in a progression sense, but more like each set offers something unique. I wear different armor depending on what is about to happen if I can prep. That's why you can carry every item on you.
The style is just a flavor thing. I think all the mage pieces look pretty decent.
OK. Thank you for your explanation. Got it.
I went Spellblade. Int scaled katana in the left hand, staff in the right. Sometimes switching to Staff + 100% physical shield or holding katana in 2 hands. Also, switching armor - depends on the boss.
For the regular exploration, I use the full Spellblade set and it works well.
And regarding rolls. What is the difference between light and med rolls?
Before Elden Ring, I finished the original Demon Souls and Dark Souls 1. IIRC there were different animations for the rolls with light, med, and heavy load. Now, in Elden Ring, Light and Med looks the same while Heavy is slow and clumsy. Is it right? Maybe light load looks the same as med, but takes more stamina?
There’s a few, I’d recommend looking at the list the other guy/girl gave you, that’s what I did.
I looked at it, trying to get all the new stuff I need, I want the Lazuli Sorcerer Set and Azure Glintstone Staff, gunna be sick, anything better than that so I can get it?
Stats don’t matter, it’s all about your drip :)
I'm in act 2 and maybe some better gear will come later on, but 3/4 of the gear I've found so far has been specifically for mage and is much, much better than everything else I've found for everything else.
I'm level 35 and dex gear is extremely scarse. I've had to dump stat into strength because there's nothing decent for me to wear otherwise, it's frustrating.
There is a shitton of gear in this game and a lot of it is easy to miss. Mage is probably some of the easiest to find at least the armor because of the Druid shrines.
I play as a mage, myself, but I feel like the majority of equipment that I've found up until act 2 have been geared towards melee builds. I have multiple rare rogue, duelist and generic melee armors that are collecting dust in the stash.
I'm doing a completionist play-through, so I think I've found the majority of equipment. Granted, I haven't explored every single nook and cranny of Cuanacht, yet.
Did you find the Spellslinger set? That was a game changer for me as a magic user.
In act 1, I found 3 mage sets spellslinger, battle mage and druids.
Two rogue sets, assassin and something else.
Two crafted dex/str medium ish sets.
One crafted heavy set (Knights).
Three unique heavy chest armor, and one unique heavy helm, no heavy sets.
Yep, I've got it and I'm using it (at least, some of it) :) It's the Royal set that I want now.
This, been a Summoner primarily and most of the kit i've found up to a similar point as you is for other builds and what i have found for Mage is mostly sidegrades, especially in terms of Wands.
The mage gear pieces are simply the easiest to find and obtain. Most of the melee oriented stuff is on tough enemies as loot, or are craftable armors. Dex-oriented gear is the rarest since most of those are hidden in optional quests.
There is only 1 good ranger armor and it’s in act one, in a chest. Archer gear is lacking in the game. The only good one can carry you to the end of the game but still, it would be nice if it were more balanced. The loot in the game just gets very repetitive and by act 3 I found myself not having much fun anymore because it was the same loot every where and I had no reason to explore much anymore. That’s just me though. I played archer my first playthrough and mage my second. Definitely a better experience playing as a mage, personally.
cromlach upon the pillars is a recipe for the best bow armor in the game. nuff said
Yeah but you get it in act one and that carries you throughout the rest of the game. Then the rest of exploration is mostly mage stuff, which is good and all for mages. It’s only bows after act one. People just want it to be more balanced I guess.
Lancelot set is legitimately one of the best sets in the game and you get it in act one.
I will say I don’t think I see a lot of dex gear outside of act one. The double sneak attack sword and 1.5 sneak attack daggers I think are the only specials daggers I’ve found and in act 2 you can get a bow with double sneak attack damage as well.
One of the bounties has a unique rapier that does extra parry damage I believe and is mostly a dex weapon. Swords are generally strength + dex requirements but if your looking to build just dex you’re going to be disappointed
Where can I find the Lancelot gear?
Master robes of destruction and magika regen is what i go with. Better than the arch mage robes if youre a destruction user.
The Arch mage robs, and a dragon priest mask, is top tier for a mage , what u use for hands and legs is whatever u feel like xD
I generally end up with a full set of daedric mail and every available bit of jewelry double enchanted so that destruction and conjuration are sub zero magica cost.
And a set of scout with illusion and alteration as a spare.
I leave the heavy armour for my tanks
It depends on build.
A pure mage is all about robes. I prefer the master college robes over the archmage robes.
Battlemages, Spellwords, and Sorcerers favor heavy armor. I like the ebony spell-knight armor.
Nightblades, and Witchhunters favor light armor. Leather, fur, or hide seem like a better fit for a mage. An Altmer could get away with Elven or glass armor.
I’ll typically roll my own enchantments. I use a lot of armor mods because I get bored of the vanilla stuff. But, I try not to use game-breaking mods. I like modded armors that have equivalent stats to vanilla armor .
This is my general stance too.
I'm currently using Stahlrim for my Spellsword, Vampire armor for my Nightblade, and Dwarven for my ... I don't know what to call it, but basically a Big Daddy from Bioshock crossed with Fallout power armor.
If you don't craft, Archmage Robe, Morokei mask, Ring of the Erudite, idk about the rest. At higher levels item s which reduce mana cost up to 25% can drop unless I'm tweaking, these are good.
If you make your own gear, it depends on your build. If you use every school of magic, make destruction free(4 enchantments) then buff Magicka and Magicka regen. Put magic resistance on your boots, and then you have 1 enchatment slot left on your gloves and boots. I prefer fortify carry weight.
If you only use 2 schools of magic, make both free.
With enough bonuses and necromage, you can actually make 2 schools of magic free and another one cost 66% less, but that's very cheesy.
If you Archmage Robes you will also have Savos Aren Amulet and (archmage) shock resistant boots.
For my second character ive decided to go full Mage. However ive realized that Mages are quite weak against greater numbers, and would like some gear tips to help even the odds.
The best gear for a mage is no armor so you can command people whenever you’re outnumbered and make them fight each other
Enchanted clothing > robes But if you don’t want to do clothing then enchanted armor.
what about enchanted robes? if thats a thing. I wanted to go with the "shadow wizard money gang" type of look.
Clothes are better than robes because it's two enchantable items vs one.
No idea on the shadow wizard money gang you speak of. Robes are a one clothing piece of gear, so either you’re stuck finding a pre-enchanted one or gather clothing and enchant them to how you see fit, like change the legs from fortify willpower to fortify intelligence by just changing your pants
Robes of creativity are the only robes you can equip pants for more enchants
Otherwise, necromancer robes have a skull on them
Boots of gayness and you are op
Keep your wrist shackles from the beginning, you will enchant them later
It varies a bit depending on your playstyle and preferences, but there's a good summary here of what to aim for. As for dealing with crowds, try custom spells that apply calm.
If you're not stacking shield potion effects when you're a mage, you're not doing it right. The mats for crafting shield potions are literally everywhere. You can go in naked and by right should be more tanky than a heavily armored fighter.
Hello. I am level 80 and I am starting the late game areas but I still have the beginner Astrologue armor … lol. I really didn’t found any better one.
Do you have any suggestions ? :)
Hi guys, may I ask, what's the point of wearing mage armor? Only because it' lighter?
So which means if I am a mage but have enough Endurance, I can wear heavy armor of warrior?
The point is "What make a mage decide to wear a mage set?"
Well some armor sets do boost certain sorcery spells, for example Snow witch increases frost spell damage. But not every armor does that.
Anyone can wear whatever they want as long as they have the stats for it. You wanna be a magic tank, go ahead. Just be ready to invest in the stats.
I'd be interested to know also. I'm going for fashion at the moment with the magic guild robes (the blue ones) with a bug head lol, but always looking for an upgrade!
If you want to be shine then check out Sellen’s quest. Lusat’s Set with the Twinsage Crown and Lusat’s Staff will get you there. Learn the ways of the Rolley-Polley, abandon your shield, and equip Bloodhound Step. Put a melee weapon with that ashes of war in your right hand, and the best staff you have in your left except when mounted you should have a secondary staff equipped for quickly spamming enemies with whichever version of pebble you favor. Just know if you want Stars of Ruin or the Kamehameha Wave (Comet Azure) you’ll have to undertake Sellen’s quest anyways. She’s part of Ranni’s quest anyways.
The white set you get at rannis rise with the twinhead helmet from academy is pretty good.
Can i ask what set you mean? Im at the same point as OP so im wondering
Twinsage glintstond crown, snow witch robe, preceptors gloves and astrologer trousers am i currently wearing.
No point in wearing robes when leveling stam also increases carry weight
I have over 60 int rn but I'm wearing full plate cause its that easy
I think I only have like 20-30 points in it for my current build
Elden Bling is the new Fashion Souls
You can get renalas robes from the old finger lady at the round table
Mage armor? Suggestions
I wear the heaviest armor I find normally except when facing magic bosses where I put back my astrologer suit.
Really? Lol. So you fat roll unless magic boss? Ok thabks for info
No fat roll, sorry, I need to add that I wear the heaviest armor possible while retaining medium load.
I've been using Snow Witch Hat, Gloves from the Spellblade set, Azur's robe, and whatever the heaviest leg armor I can wear without going to fat roll. Snow Witch boosts ice spells, Spellblade boosts glintstone, and luckily glintstone icecrag appears to count as both as far as I can tell.
Could probably wear a better armor than Azur's Robe to be more defensive, but I'm choosing it for style since I want to look like a mage rather than just an armored guy casting spells. All of these are pretty easy to get. The Witch hat probably takes the most time investment to get access to but its still not much and you're likely going to do that questline anyway.
Ooh, about the spellblade gloves, I am not sure but I think I had tested it and that it only increase glintstone sorcery SKILLS, as in weapon art/ashes of war stuff, not spells. Something that definitely got lost in translation in french version (I believe it just says that it increases glintstone sorceries in french).
I may be wrong though but I think I remember testing that.
Oh that's actually nice to know. I'll double check later today when I'm on. If I can drop those gloves it'll give me another defensive bump up. (minimal as it is)
I wear the snow witch set you get from the ranni questline after radahn
I like wearing that armor you see on the cover art, the one with the winged helmet and mechanical arm. It’s pretty light, and it looks pretty rad. The only problem is you have to beat this tree root boss first
Pretty sure the Rodger gloves are bugged as they don't increase Flintstone pebble but almost double my lighting bolts lol
I love going pure caster on my first run through souls games. However I’m struggling to find weapons/armor to use as a caster. I’ve found some great staffs but I’m getting very tired of this shortsword.
Any suggestions???
I'm in the same boat. I have decent weapons and spells, but 7 hours in and I am still using the starter armor.
For weapons meteorite shard is a great early game weapon. It’s in a higher zone, but just ride there on your horse. Plenty of videos on YouTube. There isn’t much mage armor in early game.
Got it! For other casters wondering, there seems to be an entire meteorite set. So far I’ve found the staff, sword, and spear.
Try looking in swampy areas. Especially ruins within swampy areas.
God speed arcane tarnished!
Just to clarify do you mean crystal weapons, not meteorite? Can't find meteorite weapons on the wiki.
Any list on bis mage gear. All done the game and looking for some more pieces to hunt and prop up my dmg or cast rate or drip
Carian Regal Sceptor - best all-purpose staff if > 68 INT and no drawbacks.
Academy Glintstone Staff - best scaling below 68 INT.
Lusat’s - highest INT scaling staff, but all skills cost 50% more FP
Prince of Death Staff - highest overall scaling, but it requires 80 INT and 80 Faith.
Graven Mass talisman. Radagon Icon. Godfrey Icon.
Spells: too many to list. Some are great all-around. Others are situationally easy-mode.
Twinsage crown.
Spellblade set if using ashes of war.
Gotta look up that set
Staff: Lusat’s or Carian Regal Scepter
Melee options: Dark Moon Greatsword or Wing of Astel. I’ve also run cold infusion on Hoslow’s Petal Whip as a mix up.
Talismans worth considering: Magic Scorpion Charm (missable), Ritual Sword Talisman, Graven Mass Talisman, Graven School Talisman, Radagon Icon
Armor: Spellblade Set, Noble’s Hood, Twinsage Helm
Must have spells: Adula’s Moonblade, Stars of Ruin, Comet Azur, Carian Slicer
Stars of ruin is on my to do list for sure
Ive just got level 40 mage from enchanting rings..
Whats the best armour/weapons to use/wear if I run a mage build?
Mystic robes and battlestaff
Just run ancients and freeze everything

best mage armor sets in Elden Ring
Key Considerations for Mage Armor Sets in Elden Ring
Focus on Intelligence and Faith: Look for armor sets that boost your Intelligence and Faith stats, as these will enhance your spellcasting abilities.
Weight and Mobility: Mage builds often benefit from lighter armor to maintain mobility and avoid fat rolls. Aim for sets that provide a good balance between protection and weight.
Resistance to Status Effects: Consider armor that offers resistance to common status effects like poison, bleed, and frostbite, which can be detrimental in various encounters.
Aesthetic and Theme: Choose armor that fits your character's theme or aesthetic, as this can enhance your overall enjoyment of the game.
Top Mage Armor Sets:
Lands Between Set:
Raya Lucaria Robe Set:

Recommendation: The Raya Lucaria Robe Set is often considered one of the best for mages due to its high Intelligence boost and stylish appearance. However, if you're looking for a more balanced option, the Carian Knight Set is a great alternative that offers both protection and boosts to your spellcasting abilities.
