Top Spells for Mage Build in Elden Ring

TL;DR

  • Essential spells: Rock Sling, Carian Slicer, Night Comet, Comet Azur
  • Utilize Staff of Loss for Night Comet boost
  • Mix offensive and utility spells for versatility

Core Offensive Spells

For a mage build in Elden Ring, several spells come highly recommended due to their effectiveness and versatility. Rock Sling is praised for its ability to stagger enemies and its usefulness throughout the game [3:3][5:6]. Carian Slicer is noted for its FP efficiency and quick casting, making it ideal for close-range combat [1:8][2:2]. Night Comet is considered "invisible" to enemies, meaning they won't dodge or block it, which makes it excellent for stealthy attacks [2:5]. Comet Azur, while powerful, is situational due to its slow cast time and requirement for stationary targets [5:2][5:5].

Utility and Support Spells

In addition to offensive spells, incorporating utility spells can enhance your gameplay. Terra Magika boosts magic damage when standing within its area, making it useful for setting up high-damage attacks [5:5]. Ranni's Dark Moon provides a debuff that can be advantageous against bosses [5:4]. Loretta's Greatbow is effective for long-range sniping [1:5], and Magic Glintblade offers strategic timing with its delayed firing mechanism [1:9].

Build Enhancements

To maximize the potential of your spells, consider using the Staff of Loss in your off-hand for a 30% damage bonus to Night Comet [3:1]. Increasing your memory slots allows you to carry more spells, providing flexibility in combat situations [3:3]. Talismans like the Magic Scorpion Charm can further enhance your magic damage [3:5].

Endgame Strategies

In the endgame, combining spells such as Meteorites of Astel and Stars of Ruin can effectively melt bosses if executed correctly [5:3][5:5]. Utilizing summons strategically can help distract and tank hits from bosses, allowing you to focus on spellcasting from a safe distance [5:8].

These spells and strategies provide a robust foundation for a mage build, offering both power and adaptability across various combat scenarios in Elden Ring.

Night Maiden's Mist. Great for clearing out clusters of enemies, but especially good against Crystalians.

I think what people haven't figured out re: Night Maiden's Mist is that it seems to just ignore defense entirely (similar to Pestilent Mist from Dark Souls 3).

Ambush Shard is fucking amazing for a stealth mage. It allows you to attack from cover because as long as your enemy is locked on, the attack will come from the enemie's back and not the tip of your staff so you stay hidden, lock on from cover, and fire away.

That sound rly cool didn’t think Magee could use stealth, thank you

1 upvotes on reddit
Xeno_Prime · 3 years ago

It’s not exactly stealth. Once you hit them they’ll automatically know where you are, even if they shouldn’t. It can fire from behind cover though, since it appears from behind them. So it doesn’t matter if there’s an obstacle in the way that would block your other spells.

Magic Glintblade is often a much better choice, especially since the charged/uncharged versions have different delays before they fire. You can cast the charged version, wait a bit, cast the uncharged version, and then cast pebble/great shard afterwards - with good timing they'll all hit together.

They also miss less frequently than Ambush Shard against mobile targets. Glintblade has higher overall damage/FP, too.

Carian Slicer, Carian Greatsword/Adula's Moonblade, Night Comet, Ambush Shard, Swift Shard(mostly for horseback run and gun), Gavel and Cannon of Haima, Comet Azur, Meteorite of Astel, Great Oracular Bubble... Just to name a few. There are plenty more good ones, too. Sorcery has lots of nice toys.

Yep! Carian Slicer is probably the one to get ASAP, though, if you don't have it already. It's a very FP efficient way to pump out a lot of damage quickly, and can be used quickly when jumping, running or rolling. Very nice for enemies who force you into close range.

What's a good spell/incantation lineup for PvE?

Posted by BennyCooks · in r/Eldenring · 1 month ago

I'm almost through the DLC and I just respecced to an int/faith build because I wanted to try out the staff of the great beyond but I'm wondering what a good lineup is for both faith based and int based spells. I'm thinking I need a good mix of heals, buffs, long range, short range, and AOE attacks but I don't know what to prioritize. Any pointers?

SORCERY:

Literally just Carian Slicer or Piercer....and night comet.

You can add in things like Spiral Shard or Ranni's Dark Moon for specific fights, but it's not required. It's VERY easy to make things much more complex than they really need to be. And make a problem for yourself by having to cycle through 6+ spells in the middle of combat. It's completely unnecessary.

INCANTATIONS:

More of a toolbox. I find that it's difficult to limit myself to only two spells(one melee and one ranged), because you often will need more than that for any given area of the game. Early game you can get away with Catch Flame for damn near everything. Blacklame fireball for ranged.

Mid game is almost exclusively Lightning Spear and Catch Flame.

Late game you can swap between Lightning Spear and Stone of Gurranq.

At any point you may find it fun and useful to experiment with the various dragon spells. Dragonmaw will do LARGE chunks of any lifebar on a boss. Breath spells can also shut down several multi-target fights. Pest Threads can potentially hit multiple times. Same with Ancient Dragon Lightning.

You really just have to play around with all the incantations to see which ones work best for your playstyle. It's like unlocking an entirely new set of weapons.

Probably the only correct answer I've seen in the replies.

I'll add to this, for incantations you can slot in Flame Cleanse Me, Golden Vow, if you want even more defense then one of the barrier spells (depends on which boss you're fighting), if you want regen then Blessings Boon is nice too (very comfy for PvE roaming.

I also like Aspect: Horns because it gap-closes and flips humanoids (also does a ton of poise for riposte farming), which can combo into Slicer or Catch Flame DPS, or Gavel of Haima if you slot that too. It's a good enabler for my INT/FAI build.

If you have 12 Arcane you can get Rotten Breath, but I'd only swap that in if you're struggling with bosses.

Delta___38 · 1 month ago

I don't know about spells but my fav incants are bloodflame blade, flame grant me strenght and the one where u throw lightning. The buffs really add a lot of damage to melee weapons and the lightning one helped me thru a lot of situations where I didn't want to fight like 5 enemies at one so I picked them off at range as melee build

2 upvotes on reddit

Frenzied_Fire_Monk · 1 month ago

Try them all out so you can learn what they all do, what they're like. Knowing what your spells do and how to make use of them is part of "gitting gud", for mages.

Then filter for the following situations:

  • close range, pref. fast
  • long range, high damage for high burst damage, but often is very taxing on FP
  • long range, low damage for FP efficiency, mainly for dealing with normal enemies and/or not wanting to spend excessive amounts of FP while whittling down tougher enemies
  • ranged area of effect, for dealing with groups of enemies from a distance
  • area denial, something that lingers if possible

Try to figure out what kind situation your spells are suited for. Not everything needs or should be a "boss melter", you need things for all kinds of situations or you'll end up having a more difficult time than a varied loadout.

*Using Magic-Shrouding Cracked Tear and Crimson Crystal Tear in my Flask *just beat Renalla, I’ve mainly using rock-sling up to this point(it’s fun but can kinda be boring) *what other cool spells have you all found to enjoy PVE and melt Bosses? *also, stat allocation wise, how am I looking thus far? (I already cashed in Renalla’s remembrance for the Carian Regal Scepter so I’m looking forward to that)

Any advice regarding talismans/armor/SPELLS or just any general constructive criticism is greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Everyone is assuming Sorcery when you say "Mage" but I'm going to be the odd ball out and say that if by "mage" you mean using magic, then there are different types of "Mages." There are 2 main types of "mage." Intelligence mage and the Faith Mage.

INT Mages use primarily Glintstone and Gravity magics. So the pew pew magic missile type of magic. There's also sword sorceries for melee combat.

Faith Mages have access to fireballs, lightning, and healing. More elemental spell casting. You also have the Dragon Communion spells if you put in a little Arcane.

There are some spell types that require more hybrid builds such as INT/FAI, FAI/ARC, INT/ARC, but focusing on just INT or just FAI will get you most spells available.

You're obviously going to need FP to cast spells. I wouldn't go any higher than 38 Mind because fully upgraded Cerulean Tears will fully replenish exactly 38 Mind worth of FP.

One last thing. I would go ahead and get yourself a weapon that scales with your main stat. I know the point is to use cool spells but you can't always rely on magic to do the job and if you completely run out of FP you will need a back up plan.

So your build should look something like this:

VIGOR 50-60 MIND 25-38 END 25 INT/FAI 80

Yeah it'll be fine. The worst part about playing a mage is finding scrolls/tomes that contain spells and finding the teachers to teach you them. You might be stuck with the starter spells for a while but eventually you'll get more from playing the game. Some bosses drop spells.

Just keep in mind that regardless of if you pick intelligence or faith based spells, you need to upgrade your weapon.

Sorceries use Intelligence and are cast with a Staff. Incantations use Faith and are cast with a Seal. For the most part at least. Each staff or seal has the Incant Scaling stat which tells you how potent your spells will be. Incant Scaling will increase as you upgrade the weapon and put points into your stats.

Also, having a melee weapon that scales with your stat of choice is a good idea. There are magic weapons that scale with Int and other weapons that scale with faith. It's a good idea to have one to fall back on in case you run out of FP to cast spells.

Also, don't neglect your Vigor. It doesn't matter if you're playing a mage, every single character needs 50-60 Vigor by the end of the game and 40 Vigor by mid to late game. There's a damage spike and if you don't have enough health you'll get flattened later on.

Honestly it’s been a minute and I don’t remember my exact spread except getting Vigor to 60 and pumping Int with Dex up to 30 (I think) for increased casting speed and using Moonveil.

I’m mid at best and even I won with that.

A build revolving around that spell makes you a stationary turret with an almost certainty that you will miss more than is worth it.

Provided the boss doesnt move, you can melt any of them.

Comet Azur + Terra Magika + the Infinite FP Tear is a beast ... if your opponent is 100% completely stationary. And most things in this game are not.

Honestly the variations of the glintstone one shots, Rock Sling and Stars of Ruin are all incredible. Meteorites of Astel is another one that if you can pull it off can melt end bosses.

Meteorite staff and rock sling is hands down the best early game build.

My end game spell roster was something like Great Glintstone Shard, Rock Sling, Stars of Ruin, Comet Azur, Terra Magika and Meteorites of Astel. I would toss in Adulas Moonblade or the Slicer when necessary.

TBH, Rock Sling carried me the entire game from literal start to finish.

Yeah I’ve been trying Comet Azure a lot and I’m finding that it doesn’t work as well as I’d like for most enemies. However, I took my Carian Royal Scepter to +9 and have found Rock Sling’s stagger to be an incredible tool.

I run Glintstone Icecrag, Rannis Dark Moon, Adulas Moonblade, Rock Sling and Comet Azur.

Comet Azur is super situational, and slow to cast. It’s useful for unaware tough enemies in the open world and VERY slow bosses. Everything else is either rock sling or frost. I use Rannis dark moon mainly for the debuff.

Ice spear wa melts everything, and moonlight dark sword for everything else is what I did. occasionnal lorettas bow for sniping anoying high mobs, arc for masses. I found myself being a battle mage more than anything else. Also I used my cold infused grave scythe till rannis quest end.

I'm on my second playthrough (first since the DLC came out so no spoilers!) and I don't really know how to incorporate more spells into my Dark Moon Greatsword build

Posted by AleX-46 · in r/EldenRingBuilds · 3 months ago

I've always been a full strength Guts' sword type of guy in these games, but I've been trying to do more of a spellsword/hybrid build which sounds pretty cool. I just finished Ranni's questline and got the Moonlight Greatsword which fits perfectly. The thing is it's so strong (specially the heavy range attack) that I often find myself not really using my spells at all, they take way too much time to cast, they don't do as much damage as the sword and waste FP. I often find myself two-handing with some bosses or enemies, which I don't like that since that just feels like I returned to my bonk roots lol

I feel like there's something I'm missing, some charm, some spells, or something. To give some context, right now I just arrived at Leyndell Capital, haven't reached Morgott and I also haven't beaten Rykard. Below there's pictures of all my spells and stats, and drip ofc. If there's a spell I'm missing or something I should have, I'd prefer if you don't tell me very specific locations of items, rather tell where to look, if that makes sense.

I would drop Lusat’s staff for one without the FP penalty. Meteorite Staff would be fine but if you have the Academy Glintstone Staff that would be better. You’re only 6 INT points away from using the Carian Regal Scepter too. IMO this is the best staff in the game as it has no penalty for use and is almost the most powerful. You’ll need to hit lvl 80 to see it truly shine but AGS will see you right until then.

I am running similar build. From a glance, you should remove Carian Greatsword since Adula's performs the same function. You also want one of the moon spells so you can apply magic debuff against boss as your opening move. One big aoe spell like cannon of haima would be useful for mob spam. Night commet is pretty redundant when you already have your darkmoon blade R2. One utility spell like Thop's barrier or unseen form would also make your build more versatile and play different from your average bonk build.

Anything that makes an enemy wet makes them vulnerable to lightning, but also makes it impossible to apply burning from fire damage.

Nerve damage causes paralysis, and it's very good at doing it too. Poison spells can be applied twice for a "Poisoned" and "Poisoned Bad" stack. Mind damage is excellent for both confusion and sleep. Sound damage causes the dim status, which makes enemies much easier to crit.

Two later spells combined together, Gravity and Earthquake, can do very, very high amounts of damage.

When starting out as a Mage you'll be repeatedly shafted by spell stocks. The absolute first thing that will help with this is the feat to learn magic during sleep.

Spell stocks aren't nearly as much of an issue later on after you level the skill Memorisation, which increases the number of stocks you get from a spellbook when read. You'll want to find the trainer for this skill sharpish. You can also pinch spellbooks from bookcases if you learn how to do it, but it's harder to find a trainer for that.

Shatter Hex is a spell that does Holy damage, but destroys the hexes on a target, making it very hard to argue for. It's also hard to level as none of the auto programs use it. There's a mod on the workshop to make your own auto program which I might try.

Summon Animal and Summon Monster do seem to summon nastier versions as the spell levels. Summon Shadow causes sound damage, which also causes dim.

Using rest will recover your HP and MP, and it levels up. When I used it I kept falling asleep and the sleep you get from it is very poor, but it turned out I wasn't paying enough attention to the tooltip. You'll only fall asleep from rest if you're tired (stamina) or sleepy (awake for too long.) Otherwise you can use it freely.

Using a shield or heavy armour will reduce your spell cast chance. The Heavy Cast feat will reduce this but it has a limit. You're qualified as using heavy armour if the combined weight of your armour is over 30s.

You'll want to find the Mage's Guild as a priority, but you'll need a recommendation to get in which can only be purchased, and it's a few thousand orens.

Itzpalt of Element is the Mage God of choice. The ability you get from him is, frankly, incredible, and gets stronger as your piety increases. You can offer him deciphered ancient books, which lets you get literacy skill from the books and piety from the deciphered text afterwards.

You can also level up many spells by just using them without a target or on a training dummy.

Canes are "great" weapons to start out for early mages, but they can be kind of iffy, honestly.

Wow one of the best comments, reading it I feel like I had an Archmage in front of me, I didn't understand much about magic, I will combine Ice and Lightning skills to cause more damage so, one question are domains important? I started as an Executioner and Succubus to have his mana body skill and critical skill, it's very useful at the beginning, but his domain is Cold, Nerve and Cut, is there any disadvantage not having the other domains? I hear wizards can add domains but I know it's limited or you can have them all, and do you recommend some specific area damage spells?

I can't lie, I go all-in on Mage characters and have been playing Elin for hundreds of hours. Hilariously, I still feel like I'm barely even in mid-game. But I've got the robes and the wizard hat, and a drive to get my fellow magi up in the world.

Domains essentially just make it far more likely for those particular spells to drop or show up on merchants, and that's really all it does. It does end up meaning you cast them more often, since you've got more stocks, and they level up the furthest because of that. You can switch domains much later if you're farther up in the Mage's guild.

There's no disadvantage to not having the other domains; Cold and Nerve are pretty good as Cold can freeze, Nerve paralyses, and by and large things that are strong against Cold tend not to be strong against Nerve and vice-versa. I haven't actually been able to use Cut much at all. But not having the other domains simply means you'll find more spells of your current domain. It doesn't mean other domains are inherently weaker, which is good.

Wizards get two more domains, which is great, but compared to other bonuses you can absolutely live without it.

Mana body is an excellent trait for a Mage, especially much later when things start nigh-on one-shotting you at danger levels ~45-50 and past 200. It also means you're more likely to be constantly regenerating mana, which levels your Meditation skill constantly.

Area damage spells will always come down to the Ball spells, or Bolt spells if you can line things up. Shatter Hex is good area damage...but you'll practically never use it. Sigh. I want to like Shatter Hex more than Elin likes Shatter Hex.

Domains are semi-important. They effect what spells you get when sleeping, so as an Executioner you get a lot of cold and nerve.

When you've invested heavily into some spell book sellers, and thrown a few key spells at Demitas, you'll find you can access whatever spells interest you.

At dream waker 3, you should start getting more of the Blood spells. Blood scales off of strength instead of magic, so can rapidly become extremely powerful on a "muscle wizard" style Executioner.

Blood Miasma is actually kind of brutal, bleed is no joke.

Although I do not (technically) play a mage, I have a few end-game spell recommendations that I use myself as a thief.

Silence - I cannot count the amount of times I was saved by this spell. Imps, Bishops, Liches, Spiral Kings and some other casters have a good chance of one-shotting your allies and nearly killing you with just one spell if you don't have decent resistances. I'd say this spell is a must to level up.

Slow, Gravity - Slow, as far as I understand, cannot be resisted. Gravity also slows the target (and stacks with slow, afaik), but less reliable since it can be resisted. I recommend leveling both.

Bane - decreases Luck and chance to hit. Useful even against spellcasters since negative Luck affects their damage rolls.

All the support spells: Healing spells, Holy Shield, Elemental Shield, Hero, Divine Wisdom, Cat's Eye, Holy light.

Telepathy - very useful if you want to avoid situations where you open a door and see a hot guy or a bomb rock right in front of your face.

(optional)Shadow Arrow - this one is probably will be difficult to find if you don't have Darkness as your domain, but it is very helpful against enemies with high regular attack damage, like varunas. It blinds the target, giving a penalty to hit chance. It is also very helpful if you plan to pickpocket slow enemies like Big Daddies, Cyclops etc. If you try to pickpocket them without blinding, they will just call the guards (lol). They can be freely pickpocketed while blinded, without karma penalty (although sometimes they are immune to blinding for some reason).

I'd also highly recommend never getting rid of Mana Battery ether disease once you get it. Not only it gives you a bit of magic resistance, you also absorb spells from rods into your spell stock.

Very good recommendations, I have almost no experience with spells, I will write them down, but I will upgrade these spells too, and thank you for explaining the debuffs, the explanations are a bit ambiguous in the game

Btw, can you use healing spells on allies? I see the tooltip says hold to cast on party but even putting it in the hot bar it autocasts on self

CurvyDogs · 2 months ago

You can! (and I realized that like 600 hours into the game lol)

There are a few ways you can do it. You can open the ability/spells bar and hold middle click on a spell to "select" it, and then you right click on your allies to heal (or hold right click to heal the whole party). That works for any spell that can be cast on entire party (with the green icon in the corner).

The other option is to turn off "Use self-target abilities directly via hotkeys" in game settings (Esc -> Config - > Game). If you turn it off, spells in the hotbar won't be automatically used when using hotkeys, and you'll be able to choose who to use them on.

Hm, in early game you'd want to revisit puppy cave 'cause it resets fast which means more scattered spellbooks to loot and save yourself some money + free stocks for spells you use.

The damage of spells pretty much depends on your level of the spell and magic stat so the more you keep using a spell, the more damage it deals but what you can do is take advantage of some items and do some interesting reactions like any potion when thrown makes an enemy wet which grants them a fire resistance but even worse resistance to ice and lightning.

Debuffs like nightmare will boost your nether and dark damage so you can for example be a debuffer for your elemental dragons and boost their damage even more since they deal 100% elemental damage depending on their type.

If you're a solo mage that doesn't give a sh- about minmaxing, go get an earthquake or meteor spell and just spam those.

--

>!If you've progressed far enough in the main story, Demitas the exile will unlock his unique feature where he will sell any spellbooks you reserve to him so if you give and reserve him very rare spells, he will sell spellbooks of that same spell which means you've got a stable source of it. Something like Phoenix / Rebirth and Healing (Eris, Odina etc etc).!<

Thank you Cathy, I didn't know about these interactions, and thanks for the Debuff suggestion, so I'm following the dream of being a summoner, I'm going after this spell, one question, I didn't start as a wizard, so I'm still getting wizard skills, do you know, besides food, are there other ways to increase magic?

All starting equipment and spells from starter classes can be found in-game. Stat allocation efficiency only matters if you're a hardcore dedicated PvPer since you can theoretically cap all stats to 99. You can also respec if you change your mind about how you've allocated your stats. The difference between the best and worst choices for any given build is about 5 points which is such a tiny fraction of your overall stats that it's barely worth mentioning.

Starting classes have the biggest impact on the first few hours of play, after which the direction you take them in matters more.

Astrologer and Prophet and Prisoner are the best starting classes for pure casters with Prophet and Prisoner being better at hybrid builds as well.

If you want to go with INT magic, go Astrologer or Prisoner and if you want FTH magic go with Prophet.

I don't know, I've been avoiding seeing anything outside of the CNT but the one blood spell in there scaled off FTH.

Both FTH and INT, it’s a mid-game magic so there is no “best” starting class for it (but Prophet is the most closest one)

Really love the astrologer build currently lvl 44, my first real play at a software game. There is some early gear you can get to make your play through a little more bearable for this class.

Not sure about that but i guess if you want to play a intelligence class i would suggest to take ... the most intelligent class :x

It's not a build when you're like level 500

That's badass but there's only like 2 or 3 scenarios throughout the whole game where you can pull this off.

True a shorter version can be used midway in a fight against a large boss like Placidusax and fire giant

The truest of mage builds. If you aint seconds away from becoming a ball of heads from all the magic in the air it aint a proper opener to a bossfight

top spells for mage build in Elden Ring

Key Considerations for Mage Builds in Elden Ring:

  1. Spell Types: Focus on a mix of offensive spells (like damage-dealing sorceries), utility spells (for buffs or crowd control), and defensive spells (to protect yourself).

  2. Intelligence Scaling: Choose spells that scale well with Intelligence, as this is the primary attribute for mages. Higher Intelligence increases spell damage.

  3. FP Management: Pay attention to your Focus Points (FP) to ensure you can cast spells effectively during battles. Consider using items or talismans that restore FP.

  4. Casting Speed: Some spells have faster casting times, which can be crucial in combat. Look for spells that allow you to cast quickly to avoid interruptions.

  5. Synergy with Weapons: Consider how your spells will work with your chosen weapons. Some weapons may enhance spellcasting or provide additional effects.

Top Spells for Mage Builds:

  1. Comet Azur: A powerful sorcery that deals massive damage. It requires a high Intelligence level and has a long casting time, but it can obliterate bosses.

  2. Glintstone Cometshard: A great mid-range spell that offers good damage with a relatively quick casting time, making it versatile for various encounters.

  3. Starscourge Greatstaff: While not a spell, this staff boosts the power of gravity sorceries, making it a great choice for a gravity-focused mage build.

  4. Carian Slicer: A melee sorcery that allows you to deal damage up close while still being a spellcaster. It’s great for hybrid builds.

  5. Great Glintstone Shard: A reliable and efficient spell for dealing consistent damage, especially useful in PvE and PvP scenarios.

Recommendation: For a balanced mage build, consider combining Comet Azur for high damage with Glintstone Cometshard for versatility. Equip a staff like the Carian Regal Scepter to maximize your spellcasting potential. Don't forget to invest in talismans that enhance your spellcasting abilities and FP regeneration!
