TL;DR
Dermablend
Dermablend is frequently mentioned as a top choice for covering tattoos. It is designed to provide full coverage and is praised for its ability to cover even large, dark tattoos effectively. Users have noted its long-lasting nature and non-smudging properties, making it ideal for situations where you need reliable coverage throughout the day [1:1]
[1:2]. It's also available in various forms, including body foundation and setting powders, which enhance its staying power
[1:6].
Dermacol
Dermacol is another popular product known for its intense coverage capabilities. It comes in a metal tube and is both waterproof and transfer-proof, making it suitable for outdoor activities or events where sweating might be an issue [1:3]. Users have successfully used it in challenging conditions, such as horse shows, without any issues of fading or smudging.
Affordable Alternatives
For those seeking a budget-friendly option, the ELF Camo Concealer is suggested. It offers high coverage and comes in a wide range of shades. Applying it in light layers with a sponge and setting it with a translucent HD powder can achieve the desired coverage [1:5].
Application Techniques
Some users recommend using color correction techniques before applying concealer. For instance, using an orange or peach-toned corrector can help neutralize dark tattoo colors like blue or black [4:1]. Additionally, using lipstick as a base layer followed by foundation has been suggested as a creative method for temporary coverage
[3:1].
Setting Products
To ensure that the makeup stays put, using a full coverage powder and a waterproof setting spray is essential. Products like Milani Keep It Matte setting spray and suggestions from drag queen makeup communities for sweatproof options can be beneficial [5:1]
[5:5].
These products and techniques should help you achieve effective tattoo coverage for various occasions, ensuring your tattoos remain hidden when needed.
I just got hired for a job I’ve wanted for a while.... and tattoos are not allowed :( i have two small black ink tattoos on the inside of my wrist and bicep, and a good amount of scars and don’t want to wear long sleeves during the summer everyday. Does anyone have any product recommendations to cover them up? Looking for something that doesn’t smudge easily!
i believe dermablend was specifically designed to be 100% full coverage and cover tattoos
Took your advice and it’s pricey but soooo worth it. Thank you, you saved my ass
im glad!
My sister had a huge all black ink tattoo on her forearm, and she uses dermablend & color correcting to cover it when she needs. It’s her holy grail
Dermacol
You can buy it off of amazon, it comes in a little metal tube that is annoying, but it covers 100% is waterproof, smudge proof and transfer proof.
I used it for years to cover a tattoo on my neck when I was showing horses outdoors through sweat, sunscreen, rain and dirt and it never budged.
I’ve heard that lots on amazon and eBay has fake ones did you have a specific seller on amazon? It sounds awesome
I reeeeealy wanna try foundation tape but I’m scared about the shades.
I got some dermablend body foundation and the setting powder and spray for anyone who was wondering and it’s pretty amazing. Expensive but very full coverage & hasn’t smudged. I wanted the quick fix stick but my shade is gone :/
Did you ever find something?
Dermablend! It’s amazing. I’m covering a black hickey on my paper white skin rn and it works perfectly lmaooo
I would maybe try the new Elf Camo Concealer first. It’s high coverage, comes in a ton of shades, and it’s only $5. Apply it with a sponge, using light layers until you get to your desired coverage and set it with a translucent HD powder.
Foundation tape designed for this purpose
Hi, all! I have tattoos and I LOVE them, but there are times where I want to cover them up for a look, and that includes Halloween, weddings (and eventually my own), and other events where I don’t want my tattoos to draw people’s attention. (Ie, I want the attention to fall more on the outfit, dress, etc.)
What makeup is the best to cover up tattoos? Especially with light clothes, I worry about transferring. So, best makeup for the actual coverup, setting powder, and setting spray recs are what I’m really looking for!! I’ve already seen dermacol and mehron and im drawn toward those concealers, but are there any recommendations you think are better? And again, what about setting powder and spray?
Thanks in advance!!!

Hello!!
I have some tattoos (which I love) but I don’t want to show while I’m at work. I am hoping to cover them with makeup whenever my clothes don’t cover them up (one on each shoulder, one on each ankle).
What is a good makeup I can use to cover them up? Ideally, I would like for them to look like they’re not even there.
Thank you!
I haven’t tried it but I read a tip to use costume/theater makeup, as it’s meant for coverage and shouldn’t rub off
I’ll look into this! Thank you :)
Makeup won’t work for an actual long term day at work. This is an unrealistic expectation.
Well it was worth a shot. Thanks!

There are several YouTube vids about this but the short answer is to use lipstick, I always remember seeing folks use red. Apply the lipstick all over the tattoo and set with powder, then cover the lipstick with foundation that matches your skin tone. It may take practice but I’ve used this method before for single events like a wedding or interview to great success.
Thank you! I’ll give this a try :)
I’m an actor and having a hard time covering my tattoos constantly for roles does anyone have tips or advice ? Makeup brands, color correcting ? How to avoid the makeup looking like it’s cracking ??
Dermacol is the best foundation that cover tattoos but after you put it on your skin set it with powder

“If your ink is blue or black—or if it was recently done—you should be using an orange or peach-toned corrector that will cancel out the dark tones in your tattoo. Apply the correcting shade on your tattoo, then wait about a minute to ensure it’s totally dry, and top it off with your favorite full-coverage concealer from this list.” https://www.cosmopolitan.com/style-beauty/beauty/g41995791/tattoo-cover-up-makeup/

Hey everybody! I’ve been so in my feelings about my tattoos and the fact that they’re pretty close to being gone but yet still so visible. My butterfly in particular is bothering me so much because it’s on my arm and I just want it gone more than anything and get so scared that it never will be. It makes me so sad, angry, etc. that being said sometimes I really don’t want them to show and just want to cover them with makeup. I’ve tried some of my makeup I already have and it’s so frustrating because 1.) it looks cakey 2.) it’s hard to even fully cover the tattoo even though it’s so faded and 3.) it transfers and comes off easily. Does anybody have any recommendations of makeup you’ve tried that is transfer proof and also waterproof? I feel so hopeless about these tattoos at this point and it’s such a crappy feeling and then it makes me feel even more discouraged because I try to cover it with makeup and it just doesn’t work or looks horrible :( any recommendations would be helpful. Thank you so much
Remember to set it with a full coverage powder! And waterproof setting spray
Do you have any recommendations for full coverage powder and waterproof setting spray?
I haven’t covered my tattoos personally but for my face i use the mineral fusion foundation powder, i haven’t tried waterproof setting spray yet but i use the milani keep it matte setting spray. I’d recommend looking into drag queen makeup subreddits for a waterproof/sweatproof setting spray suggestion
Try the nars pot concealer! It's my fav concealer because you can just put the smallest amount and tap it in and it covers things so well.
Does it stay on all day until you wash it off??
Yes, it helps if you set with powder too. You could always go to ulta or sephora and try a sample!

I just bought a tube of tart concealer this past prime day and have been loving it so far
i cant say anything about coverage but as far as wearability and transfer one size setting spray is rlly good or hairspray! also use so so much powder
Google has a lot of suggestions but really want to hear from people who have used / can vouch for a product.
I used Dermablend. It came as a cream stick which was easy to keep on me for touchups.
Does this work well under something tight like a waistband?
No, it transfers very easily. I would probably suggest stage makeup along with kryolan setting spray.
Thanks!
Dermacol Full coverage foundation, that's in a tube. They don't have the best color diversity, from what I remember. But it's SUPER full coverage but still tends to look more natural compared to other similar foundations. You can't find it in stores, at least where I live, but you can find it on Amazon. It's roughly $20 but lasts such a long time.
Thanks!!
Thank you!
Does it transfer?
I have a tattoo on the back of my neck that i need to cover sometimes and the only thing that has ever worked well enough is kryolan TV paint stick. But I heard people use loreal infallible foundation too.

You probably don’t want to have make up stuck to your hands for lab work, right? Could you wear long sleeves and gloves?
IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye is amazing from personal experience.
I'm not sure about hand washes though- maybe try it on in store and then go wash your hands to check? But it's pretty amazing for coverage and longevity.
Hey everyone, so I'm pretty uneducated in the make up department, but I have some small tattoos (quarter size) on my arms that I would like to cover. I've been trying to search around for products and read reviews, but it seems a lot of them have mixed reviews. So far I have looked at/thought about: Dermablend, Dermacol, Hard Candy Glamoflage, and the Kat VD Lockit Tattoo foundation. I have attempted with regular foundation, but it doesn't last long at all.
Also, I have seen some say to cover it with red/orange/yellow, but the placement on my arm is so pale I think that's gonna cause discoloration. Anyway, advice or experience with any of these products or covering up tattoos?
Dermacol, it covers and stays put. I used it for my BF's wedding on her. It's just tricky to find a shade match as it's full full coverage.
Sorry this is late, but thanks for your advice! I will have to check it out.
Dermacol is amazing, but even the lightest shade is pretty dark in my opinion. It works great as a concealer even though its supposed to be stage makeup foundation x
Sorry this is late, but thanks for your input! Yeah, this is such a light part of my arm so it is difficult to find a shade light enough, haha
Dermacol and Dermabland, if I recall correctly might be the same item, just different names in different countries and packaging :)
Sorry this is late, but thanks for letting me know :)
I used to work at a sports bar that made us cover our tattoos. Dermablend is fine but I always thought it was a bit messy. I used cover fx. Pink or red concealer under, foundation over, and then set it with a powder - that's really the kicker. Make sure its just a run of the mill setting powder, no pigment.
Sorry this is so late, but thanks for your advice, I will check it out!
Hi makeup land,
I feel quite lost here because I don’t really actually wear makeup on my face. I am however looking for the best, tested, most foolproof method of concealing tattoos.
Long story short- got one I hate on the back of my arm. I NEVER wear anything short sleeved but would really love to. I’m about halfway through tattoo removal and so now it’s blown out and ugly- not as dark anymore so should be fairly easy to cover with the right products, and it’s only getting lighter now too.
What products can I buy from either Sephora or Mecca (not Dermablend, I tried it and it was awful) to conceal this tattoo. Everything from the best colour corrector, to foundation/concealer and a setting powder that means the makeup won’t budge.
Please help! I miss wearing cute tops 😭
Nothing from Sephora or Mecca will help unfortunately. You have to learn colour correction and purchase an orange colour corrector then a really full coverage foundation, try Krayolan! Theres a store in the city, you can go there and maybe ask for advice on how to cover a tattoo and I’m sure they can help with that!
I don't know if this is helpful, but one of the musical theatre performers I follow on YouTube, Alicia Belgarde, is currently performing in the "Friends, The Musical Parody" tour in the UK and has to cover a tattoo on her arm: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/sU_cSD7N2AA
Red lipstick + Kevyn Aucoin sensual skin enhancer from Mecca, not sure about the Sephora equivalent. There’s tutorials online or the staff would probably be able to help in store :)
I’m aging myself here, but “back in my day” (haha), Mac did a studio fix foundation that covered tattoos, and I think they still have it. Not sure if the formula is still the same. But worth a try.
I’m starting a medical program at my college and the program doesn’t allow facial piercings or tattoos. I have a tattoo on my wrist and then another small one on my arm by my inner elbow. i could use bandaids but i’m afraid they’d come off when wet. so does anyone know of a good brand that’ll cover tattoos? i don’t want to spend a ton so if it’s a drugstore brand that’s even better!
Check out Vichy Dermablend. It's designed to cover birthmarks, hyperpigmentation, etc. Pretty sure it'll cover tatts too
Pre-Laser hair removal I used Dermablend to cover up my dark facial hair. They have many different shades to match your skin, it lasts all day, water proof (I went swimming in lakes with no issues). There's a reason we transwomen swear by this stuff.
Pretty sure Kat Von D has specifically made one just for this reason
i’ll look into that one thank you!
Look into the Zombie man's video. He passed away this year from suicide, but he had a cover girl make up
Kat Von D is also openly an anti-vaxxer among other issues if you care about that.
Bye bye under eye by IT cosmetics.
I've never had luck with any make-up solution really lasting...I'm sure they exist, but I never had access to one that worked. When I need to cover my tattoos I use arm covers from Tat2X. They're comfy and stay in place well, plus provide some protection from the sun.
best makeup products for covering tattoos
Key Considerations for Covering Tattoos:
Coverage Level: Look for products specifically designed for high coverage. Full-coverage foundations or concealers are essential for effectively hiding tattoos.
Waterproof and Long-Lasting: Choose waterproof formulas to ensure the makeup stays in place throughout the day, especially if you’ll be in humid conditions or sweating.
Color Matching: Select shades that closely match your skin tone. Some products offer a range of shades, while others may require mixing for the perfect match.
Texture: Opt for thicker, cream-based products for better coverage. Liquid foundations can also work if they are highly pigmented.
Setting Products: Use a setting powder or spray to lock in the makeup and prevent it from smudging or fading.
Recommended Products:
Dermablend Leg and Body Makeup: This is a full-coverage, waterproof foundation that is specifically designed for covering tattoos and imperfections. It offers a range of shades and lasts up to 16 hours.
Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer Crème: Known for its high pigmentation and full coverage, this concealer is great for smaller tattoos and can be blended easily.
Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer: This waterproof concealer provides excellent coverage and is suitable for all skin types, making it a great choice for tattoo coverage.
Tarte Shape Tape Concealer: While not specifically for tattoos, its full coverage and long-lasting formula make it a popular choice for covering smaller tattoos.
Tip: Always test the products on a small area of skin before applying them to ensure they match your skin tone and do not irritate your skin.
