TL;DR
Clothing Solutions
For those who prefer not to use makeup, clothing can be an effective way to cover tattoos. Long sleeve shirts are recommended for forearm tattoos [4:1], while pants or longer socks can hide ankle tattoos
[4:1]. Neck scarves can help cover neck tattoos in warmer weather
[1:3]. There are also specialized sleeves available that can slide over your arm for additional coverage
[4:7].
Makeup Options
Makeup is a common method for covering tattoos, especially when clothing isn't sufficient. Dermablend is frequently recommended due to its effectiveness and lack of transfer [1:2]
[2:1]
[3:3]. Kat Von D's foundation and concealer are also noted for their ability to cover tattoos
[3:1]. For long-lasting results, Ben Nye Final Seal setting spray can lock the makeup in place, even under heat
[2:2].
Industry Considerations
The necessity to cover tattoos varies significantly by industry and region. While some office environments may require tattoos to be hidden [4:4], other fields like healthcare might be more accepting
[4:2]
[4:3]. It's important to understand the specific dress code and cultural expectations of your workplace.
Product Recommendations
If you're considering makeup, it's crucial to choose products that match your skin tone and provide adequate coverage. Dermablend and MAC's body makeup are suggested for their variety of shades [2:1]. Additionally, using color correction beneath foundation can prevent ghosting
[2:3]. Always purchase from reputable retailers to avoid counterfeit products
[2:3].
Hi all,
Looking for some quick advice/opinions. In my younger years I went a bit a crazy getting loads of tattoos, including one big one on my neck/throat (regrettably and im in the process of getting it removed). I am going back to the cooperate world and looking for opinions and work attire/dress codes and covering up my tattoo. I will be working a back office role, none customer facing. I will be wearing turtle necks most of the time to cover up my tattoo but parts of still peak out - the solutions I have tried so far are makeup, which works great but it does not stay on long and often gets on my clothes. The other option I have tried is using skin colored physio tape which works very well but it also quite obvious that I have some tape around my neck but even so it mostly covers the tattoo entirely - its only when looked at from the side you can see the the tape. Do you think that the tape showing would be considered unprofessional and inappropriate in an office setting?
This is entirely dependent on what industry you’re going in to.
But you should check in to dermablend if you haven’t already - it’s designed for this situation and I haven’t experienced any transfer.
Dermablend and think about neck scarves in warmer weather it would help cover the tape. Good luck on the removal.
Assuming it’s not something offensive (eg, a giant FUCK or white supremacist shit), I think if you’re back office, I’d explain to your manager that you’re getting it removed, and then just wear turtle necks or tops that de emphasize it without needing to be over the top. Your new coworkers will very quickly get used to seeing you and get over it.
Taping skin all the time isn’t great for it, especially somewhere like your neck that is more sensitive anyway.
39f Looking for a job and most places still discriminate against tattoos. Especially neck and face tattoos. What can help? It is hot where I live for most of the year.
I don’t have concealer recs, but whatever you go with use Ben Nye Final Seal setting spray to lock it all in. Ben Nye makes professional costume makeup and their products are meant to hold up to people singing and dancing under the heat of stage lights. I’ve used it for costumes with body paint before, and that shit didn’t budge even after hours of outdoor photo shoots.
Probably Dermablend, order from a legit beauty retailer (Ulta, company site, etc) and not a third-party site because there are a lot of fakes online. Color correction under the foundation will help avoid ghosting.
Dermablend makes a leg and body makeup that is sold at Ulta, I used to work there and this was best for tatt coverup. The skin colors are kinda light to orange tho so they aren't super inclusive. If you need a different variety of color then I'd also suggest Macs body makeup which is online I believe. I also think KVD foundation was used too for tattoo coverup. Best of luck 🍀🫡
I'm starting a new job soon that requires me to cover up my visible tattoos and for me that includes both hands and behind my ear. What products do y'all recommend? What products should I avoid? Thanks in advance!
You could probably get away some drugstore makeup, there some decent concealers, if there not super dark tattoos or just thin lines. Makeup on your hands probably wouldn’t last long though without tons of touch up.
Makeup?
I figured, but I know nothing about it or what is the best kind to use.
Dermablend
Jeffree Star concealer (30 different shades)
Ah great!
Just gotta say, this is fcking ridiculous. In what age are we living. Worked together with heavily tattoed surgeons...
I agree, but I'm going to work at a prison so it makes sense.
Even then it doesn't make sense. That's a crappy requirement.
Kat Von D has a foundation or concealer that work on her tattoos. I would use that.
Hi! I have 3 tattoos that I need to have hidden for work. I have one on my forearm, one on the back of my ankle, and one on my chest (which is pretty easily hidden by my shirt already). What is the easiest ways for me to hide the others? I am crap at makeup and cannot figure out how to cover them with makeup, so I'd like some no makeup ideas if possible!!
Tattoos are still inappropriate at work? I see a lot of people working at the hospital with full sleeves. I'm not asking what kind of work OP has, but what kind of jobs/careers are still discriminant against tattoos?
I think it's very regionally dependent as well. I see patients in the hospital and in the clinic and nobody cares about my tattoo. In fact I've even gotten compliments a couple times. I have healthcare friends in other parts of the country who do have to cover theirs up.
Quite a lot of the standard Office cubical jobs don’t like tats.
Even in the US/Canada? Those jobs usually have a dress code right? So, a full sleeve is easy to hide. Unless you have a face or neck tattoo.
Well bandaids or long sleeves.
They sell sleeves you can slide over your arm. High socks for the one on your ankle
Long sleeve shirts and pants
Everyone says long sleeves for the forearm tat so I would suggest pants, longer socks or stockings for the ankle tat. When it comes to make up, I think most people use some kind of concealer. You could go to any store, get one that matches your skin and then just rub it in over the tattoo. It might be easier to try make up on your ankle since it’s probably not that large
I have a few small tattoos I need to cover up for work and was wondering if anyone had recommendations for products used to hide tattoos.
Honestly it’s going to depend on the tattoo and how much work you want to put in… using makeup will require multiple steps
I recently had my first costume where I had a tattoo showing, and it’s small enough where I was able to just cover it with a band-aid. However, I just got a larger one in a place that is more likely to be shown and I want a more foolproof way to cover them. Any tattoo concealer or other trick anyone swears by?
I have visible tattoos on my wrists. I have spent over a decade trying literally everything. Airbrushes, alcohol activated makeup, dermablend, etc.
Dermablend covers great but sucks because of how much it transfers. It has ruined costumes no matter how well I have set it.
Airbrush makeup doesn't transfer, but the airbrush is a nightmare to clean, and the airbrush tattoo cover makeup is usually so thick it will clog the airbrush super easily
Alcohol activated makeup is solid, doesn't transfer, and is easy to apply, but is prohibitively expensive and not a lot of shades available, so you have to mix your own color.
The one and only thing that has consistently:
Worked to cover my tattoos
Not transferred into my costumes AT ALL
Is easy to apply
Does not cost an arm and a leg
Is Maekup Tattoo Cover Gel by Dave Stoneman. Make sure when you're looking for it, you spell Maekup the same way, as it's intentionally misspelled.
It's an alcohol based gel (so it dries fully matte) that is only $25 for a jar and does not move. It's super easy to apply (I recommend getting a brush designed specifically for cream products like the brushes that come with the Ben Nye kits). It's allegedly what they use to cover The Rock's tattoos. I have worn white gloves with this stuff, and they did not get an ounce of makeup on them.
I will literally sing the praises of this product from the heavens because it is so incredibly good and so much better than literally everything else I've tried.
The only real downside is the color range is not great, especially for darker skin tones, but you can mix the shades together to get the color you want.
If you're in the NYC area, they sell it at Manhattan Wardrobe Supply, but you can also get it online.
Dermablend
I worked with an actor who had a huge brightly colored forearm tattoo and he was able to cover it completely with dermablend (although it did take some time to apply)
Dermablend. A thin coat, followed by setting powder. Repeat layers until fully covered, and that shit will not budge no matter how much you sweat under the lights.
I do this too if costume sleeves don't cover my full sleeve tattoo.
This is the way. I also spray it with Ben Nye sealing spray.
Bingo. It’s a tattoo covering miracle powder
Thanks!
Put down a layer of Elmer's glue first and let it dry. It acts like a primer. Then dab over color corrector, usually orange. Then setting powder, then dab on fountain and more setting powder. The layers are the same as someone trying to cover their dark eyebrows
Let me know what you think! It can take a little getting used to in terms of application, I usually do very thin criss-crossing layers, but it works amazingly well. Also it dries VERY quickly, but make sure you let each layer dry completely before you do the next one or it can go a little wonky.
Jumping in a bit late here but wanted to ask where you ordered this from? I can’t find it anywhere in stock!
Back in the day I used to slather myself with foundation and concealer lol!! It worked on small tattoos especially on stage, but when I got bigger ones it wasn't as foolproof
Yeah, that was my first option that I tried with my smaller one, but that thing was not budging lol
I was watching an old episode of Miami ink last night. One of the clients was a businessman. He was working on a full body suit. But he wore suits to work that conveniently covered it all up. He didn’t seem to mind. He actually got a kick out of showing off his work to unsuspecting friends who didn’t realize he was so covered. Just curious if any one else has a similar experience out there. Like do y’all intentionally cover your tattoos for work?
No, I do not. Tattoos are allowed at my work so I don't bother covering them
I cover my tattoos for work almost instinctively even though there is no policy against tattoos, I guess for me it just feels more professional to have them covered. I think there is still a stigma to be the "tattooed person" in the workplace and for me my tattoos are part of my private life not my work life so I don't need to bring them into the workplace and to be honest I really like it that way.
Same. My department’s VP doesn’t particularly like tattoos. I just make sure she never sees mine. My skirts are long enough to cover my thighs, and I have cardigans to hide my arms. There is no policy against tattoos at all in my company, but I like my job and most of the people I work with.
I have two on my back, one on my calf, and I’m getting one on my forearm in November. I’m a professor. I don’t intentionally cover them but it’s usually just my leg my students see.
I’d probably cover them if I were to interview at a new university until I learned the culture there.
I have to cover my larger ones. I have small ones on my extremities that I let peak out from time to time, but mostly its long sleeves and pants.
Getting a full body suit myself and this is my M.O.
I have to wear long sleeve shirts and dress pants anyways.
hi guys I'm wondering if you have any tips on how to cover tattoos up , I have 13 and my family knows about 3 or 4 of them so I'd like to cover them up when we have to go on holiday and get them out
You can try to use foundation, but if you are in the sun/water, it will smear.
Kind of pricy, but alcohol based pigments are mostly waterproof and can last a week or so, so you wouldn't have to worry about it rubbing off.
Check out this video to see what can be done with them:
You can get really thick full coverage foundation that can cover up really well.
Do you have any you'd recommend ?
Dermacol is supposed to be very full coverage I believe
They already know about 4 of them. Why not own your tattoos. Why get them if you are ashamed and have to hide them?
I know family can be tough sometimes but it's your body, your choice. Cat has to come out of the bag sometime.
I agree. Why hide them? They can only get mad once haha
Hi, I'm soon to graduate from university with a good degree and honors, and I just had a question about tattoos.
My situation is that when I was a lot younger I stupidly got visible tattoos on my hand and neck ( I know really f-ing stupid but what can I do about it now.) I would like to start work as soon as possible as I am almost a CPA, I have passed all the accreditation exams and everything needed. I am currently getting laser treatment on them but this is obviously lengthy. My question is, would I be able to cover up my hand and neck tattoo with makeup while on the job? (Until I can get them removed) considering I wear a suit. I have been looking into this as it seems my only option, would this work at all? And if slightly noticeable would it be okay as long as I keep them covered with makeup every day at work? All my life I have worked for and wanted to do this job as it is my dream and I hate the fact my stupidity has hindered me. I realise I have done wrong and I hope that I can get some constructive help from anyone. Thanks
Fucking hate posts that end up like this. Op is asking how to cover them, and every comment is about whether or not you can/should be alright showing them.
They’re not asking for opinions their asking for help covering up tattoos
I'm curious to hear this question answered too. I don't have anything I can't cover up, but wondering if I'm doomed to a life of long-sleeve dress shirts or not
I can’t speak to OP about covering up neck and hand tattoos, but no one really seems to care when I wear short sleeves at out of work functions. And I have a pretty large tattoo on my arm. The only thing that really matters is whether you can cover it up around the clients in my experience
Hand and neck tattoos will probably still raise some eyebrows at most places. While more and more employers don't care about visible tattoos, those are still out of the norm places for tattoos.
I have a lot of tattoos and let the ones on my arms show. No one has ever said anything negative to me about them but I always try to cover them up if we have office visitors.
I'd suggest covering the hand and neck ones with makeup while interviewing and when first starting a job. Once you start, talk to your manager about them and ask if you can leave them uncovered if you want.
You'll be fine.
Going to second this one. Long sleeves and some good concealer at least for the interview and likely for any client meetings.
Thanks I'll give this a go
I know of a guy that has a full sleeve tattoo on his left arm, entirely in colour ink. He works at Deloitte. He told me that during the interview process the interviewers asked about his tattoos and found them pretty cool. I'm not trolling; so I think you'll be fine.
Why are you so embarrassed of your tattoos? Were they tattoos that you truly regret getting so much? I mean if they're not inappropriate, than I personally wouldn't be worrying too much but I'll be rocking them
It's not that I am embarrassed, it is that I know certain professions, i.e Accounting frown upon visible ones. Which is why I asked the question, could I potentially cover them with makeup to get a job in it? They are nothing offensive they are just colorful and I don't want them to hold me back career wise.
I want to say that it depends on where you are working for. Some places are very conservative and require the professional wear, and others are more casual. I have a colleague who has an entire tattoo sleeve that is badass. She wears it proudly around the office where she wears short sleeved shirts and fashionable no sleeve attire with no one batting an eye.
I’m an actor and having a hard time covering my tattoos constantly for roles does anyone have tips or advice ? Makeup brands, color correcting ? How to avoid the makeup looking like it’s cracking ??
Dermacol is the best foundation that cover tattoos but after you put it on your skin set it with powder

“If your ink is blue or black—or if it was recently done—you should be using an orange or peach-toned corrector that will cancel out the dark tones in your tattoo. Apply the correcting shade on your tattoo, then wait about a minute to ensure it’s totally dry, and top it off with your favorite full-coverage concealer from this list.” https://www.cosmopolitan.com/style-beauty/beauty/g41995791/tattoo-cover-up-makeup/
