What Redditors are Saying

Best Waterproof Makeup for Swimming

TL;DR

  • Make Up For Ever (MUFE): Widely recommended for its waterproof properties, used by Olympic swimmers [1:2], [3:1].
  • Tarte Lights, Camera, Splashes Mascara: Noted for minimal fallout and long-lasting wear [1:3].
  • ABH Brow Pomade: Highly recommended for staying power, even through showers [1:4].

Waterproof Foundations and Concealers

For a base that withstands water, oil-based or cream foundations are recommended. Brands like Graftobian, Ben Nye, Kryolan, and Cinema Secrets are known for their durability in wet conditions [2:2]. The Make Up For Ever Camouflage Cream is also noted as a great base and spot concealer [3:6].

Waterproof Eye Makeup

Maybelline Color Tattoo is highly praised for its ability to stay put during swimming [2:1]. For eyeliners, Xtreme Lashes is mentioned for its resilience [3:4]. MUFE's Aqua Resist line is also suggested, with products specifically designed for synchronized swimmers [4:2].

Setting Sprays and Techniques

Using a strong setting spray can enhance the longevity of makeup. Huda Beauty and Skindinavia Bridal setting sprays are recommended [2:2], [3:6]. Some users suggest using weatherproof hairspray as a final step, although this may not be suitable for sensitive skin [3:2].

Lip and Cheek Products

For lips, any cheap lipstick from the dollar store has been found effective in water [2:1]. Benefit’s tint is a popular choice for cheeks, though it may require additional setting products to hold up underwater [4:2], [4:3]. Using lipstick as blush can also increase staying power when wet [4:5].

Drugstore Options

For those seeking budget-friendly options, Tarte foundation and IT Cosmetics CC cream have been noted for their lasting coverage in water [5:1]. Maybelline and Covergirl offer waterproof mascaras that minimize smudging [5:1].

When selecting waterproof makeup, it's important to consider both the product type and application technique to ensure the best results while swimming.

What are the best waterproof makeup products you've tried? Not just mascara but eyeliner, blush, brow product, lip product, etc

I'm talking makeup that could last a day at a beach club.

MUFE. Olympic swimmers use their brand.

Tarte lights, camera, splashes is my favorite mascara ever! I’ve tried many waterproof mascaras, and all of them tend to have a little fallout by the end of the day, except this one.

ABH brow pomade is the best waterproof brow product. it’s even lasted me through a shower!! also a little goes a long way. def worth trying, i know it’s on the pricier side but i’ve had mine for 3 years now and it still works as well as when i first bought it and hasn’t showed any signs of expiring anytime soon lol so you really do get your money’s worth

Makeup and water (READ before judging LOL.)

Hello everyone! Coming here as I thoroughly enjoy wearing makeup and learning about it, and hoping I can find some guidance on my makeup journey.

I know some people will say “just don’t wear makeup while swimming and or during any water activities” but I have some uneven skin-tone, I blush very easily and try to hide that, and acne.

I have seen people wear a full face of makeup during water activities and the makeup doesn’t budge, and if it does budge it’s nothing too noticeable. Unlike mine… as soon as I even get a drop on my face the makeup disappears in that spot completely. When I go completely underwater it comes out super streaky while others appear to be smooth.

I’ve tried numerous different foundations, concealers, setting spray, and powders over the years. Is it the way I apply it? Have I just gotten unlucky with products?

Oil based makeup will hold, so cream foundation. Sounds like you might be wearing a waterbased formula? Old school pro formulas are best against the water as they have heavier oils and waxes then newer and consumer formulas, so Graftobian, Ben Nye, Kryolan, Cinema Secrets (personal fave). This goes for blush, contour, anything else. Setting cream eyeshadows should hold too, as well as gel eyeliner (which is much tougher than pen liners).

Setting spray alone won’t hold the makeup if the base isn’t waterproof but may help on top. Huda one is strong af.

If you absolutely must wear makeup, you should avoid water activities or at very least don't do any immersion near/around your face and try to keep all water off.

You should wear everything waterproof, set well, and use a fixing spray. Other than that, ya just avoid water activities 100%.

-12 upvotes on reddit
A
admiralholdo · 6 months ago

That isn't really necessary - it's absolutely possible to do water activities with a full face of makeup. Look at the synchronized swimmers in the Olympics!

RemarkablePear8305 · 6 months ago

I guess if you want to wear it so much you should look into the make-up that synchronized swimmers use. But I don’t think it’s good for your skin to wear it on regular basis.

There is some makeup designed specifically for the synchro gals, but it isn't necessary. Most lip products, for example, stay on just fine in the pool.

Hi there! My daughter did competitive synchronized/artistic swimming for YEARS and you absolutely can wear makeup while you are swimming. We found that the best product for eyes was Maybelline Color Tattoo, that stuff didn't budge. And, for lips, any cheap lipstick from the dollar store worked great!

Also, try the L'Oreal setting spray... I forget which one specifically, but they literally had ads with one of the Olympic synchronized swimmers in it.

(Tangentially, I know OP didn't ask but do you wanna know how those ladies get their hair to stay absolutely perfectly slicked back? Knox unflavored gelatin! You mix it with hot water and brush it on with a paintbrush. It smells like death. I miss watching my daughter perform, but I do NOT miss the stench of the Knox.)

USE WEATHER PROOF HAIRSPRAY! I played waterpolo for six years and had my makeup on in the pool the whole time and the only that would smear was my mascara. Basically what you need to do is pack a shit ton of powder on your cream products, spray it with a long lasting setting spray LIGHTLY, and then spray it with a shit ton of weatherproof hairspray. I used Aqua-net but there are other ones out there. Good Luck!

So you spray the hairspray on your face? Is that okay on the skin?

15 upvotes on reddit
Dragon_Manticore · 3 years ago

It's not good, but occasional use is alright.

Assuming you don't go swimming daily, you should be fine.

Makeup artists also apparently use this for special events when you need your makeup to stay in place all day.

Good question. I have no had any issues with having it on my face. With that said I’m not doing it everyday. I think that the part that might cause health issues is if you breath in the hairspray too much when you are using it. Besides that I haven’t actually done research but it’s been okay with me and a few drama department I’ve been at use it on their students so I think it’s fine

Make Up For Ever Camouflage Cream, great as a base and a spot concealer, not so great at undereye. A little goes a long way.

Skindinavia Bridal setting spray, if you don't want to use hairspray as others have suggested.

Benefit Roller Girl Macara, but my personal and controversial opinion is eyelash extensions.

If anyone knows an eyeliner LMK, because my HG was discontinued years ago and nothing works now. I've tried Stila, Anastasia, MAC, NYX, and countless others.

Maybe look into Makeup Forever’s Aqua Resist line. I remember reading that synchronized swimmers love using their products. They even have this Aqua Seal, which is like Duraline for waterproofing eyeshadows etc.. and as for blush I think they loved Benefit tint.

benefit's tint is a favorite of mine but it doesn't seem like the sort of product to hold up well in water, honestly. but maybe if it's set in place with something made to set makeup for synchronized swimmers it would be fine

If you are swimming to work out, barefaced is best. Maybe some waterproof mascara. If you are splashing about the pool trying to look cute and really want to wear makeup, I’d look for some YouTube recommendations re makeup for synchronized swimmers. Otherwise I’d keep it simple with some bronzer, waterproof mascara and eyeliner, and some tinted moisturizer

Aquarian_short · 3 years ago

I’ve used tarte foundation and that lasted for me in the water, but I’ve found tinted sunscreens/cc creams can work well too. I’m using IT cosmetics cc cream and it has surprisingly good coverage and lasts. I’ve also used supergoop but it was too light for me and looked weird. I think it would work if you are more pale.

For mascara, I haven’t found one that will completely stay on, but Maybelline and covergirl waterproof mascaras have been the ones that least give me raccoon eyes lol.

I always hate rainy days or going swimming/water activities because I can't wear makeup without worrying about it getting ruined. Unfortunately, I'm part of the crew that NEEDS makeup to look half-decent, and no, I'm not exaggerating. As much as I'd like to, I cant afford to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on finding a reputable microblader or eyeliner tattoo artist. I've heard of the peel-off eyebrow things, but it seems like they only have enough for one application, and cost more than $20. Are there any relatively affordable brow and eyeliner that are completely waterproof, last all day, won't change color in chlorinated water, and won't burn a massive hole in my wallet? I have extremely faint brows (to the point of nonexistence), and small eyes.

Eyeliner: mac liquid last. It’ll stay on through a 3 day cabin weekend. I went for a treatment at a thermal spa and the girl asked if she could take it off. I said she could try and after 5 mins of rubbing she was only able to remove a few flakes. Be warned: it’ll take loads of oil to remove.

I honestly don’t know as I don’t swim.

I hair use this product bc I have no problem with it saying. I also know the history of this line and why it was originally made.

However I do know the longer you wear a product it does start to break down. So if you swimming towards the end of the day. It probably won’t be as resistant as say the start of the day.

I swear by Blinc! It doesn’t smudge or budge while swimming or in torrential rain, doesn’t flake or bleed and since it isn’t your standard “waterproof” mascara it is easily removed at the end of the day!

When I worked as a summer camp counselor and went swimming every single day it was the only mascara that didn’t make me lose lashes trying to remove or make me look like a raccoon and scare my campers after playing in the pool!

Edit: I just looked it up to confirm what makes it work so well and it’s the tubing mechanism, so other “tubing” mascaras could I theory work as well! I think essence has one too? I’ve never tried theirs though, but tubing mascara > waterproof everyday in my book.

A hack you can try is applying your base as usual and then set it with a LOT of powder, but don't bake. Then spray a lot of setting spray and lightly powder your midface (though i haven't done this because i love a really matte finish). A really good powder I can recommend in the about_tone blur powder pact, no matter how much I apply it doesn't look cakey or dry. I spent ten hours in the theme park yesterday, the rain was pouring down, and my makeup still looked perfect even after getting soaked on all the rides in the rain😆

Longest lasting, waterproof cheek tint or blush?

Posted by marianaavilal16 · in r/beauty · 3 months ago

Hello!! New to this sub and posting for the first time

I started swimming 2-3 days a week a few months ago and I love it but I also love wearing makeup, and since I work from home it feels like a waste to go outside to swim and not do my makeup lol. I usually wear just a light skin tint and a blush, I’m a blush girl through and through and I love a natural flushed look.

I’m okay with only wearing blush since that’s what I do on a daily basis anyway!

Do you have any recommendations for a super long lasting blush that I could wear to the pool and won’t be gone as soon as my face is in the water? I’m partial to liquid or cream blushes but any rec is appreciated! Any price range ok as well, I want to try different options and formulas before making a choice so the more the merrier. Thank you!

I would recommend a lip stain. You do have to be careful and dab it on rather than trying to blend it, but they’ll stay on through swimming. The Milk Jelly stain is probably the most user-friendly, but a liquid one would work too.

best waterproof makeup for swimming

Key Considerations for Waterproof Makeup:

  1. Waterproof Formulation: Look for products specifically labeled as "waterproof" to ensure they can withstand water exposure without smudging or fading.

  2. Long-lasting Wear: Choose makeup that offers long-lasting wear, ideally with a formula that claims to last for several hours, even in humid or wet conditions.

  3. Skin Type Compatibility: Make sure the makeup is suitable for your skin type (oily, dry, or combination) to avoid issues like breakouts or excessive shine.

  4. Ease of Removal: Since waterproof makeup can be tough to remove, consider products that come with a gentle makeup remover or micellar water designed for waterproof formulas.

  5. Brand Reputation: Opt for well-reviewed brands known for their waterproof products, as they are more likely to deliver on performance.

Recommended Products:

  • Foundation: Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup – Known for its long-lasting, waterproof formula that provides full coverage.

  • Mascara: Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara – Offers volume and length while being resistant to water.
