Urban Decay All Nighter
The Urban Decay All Nighter is frequently mentioned across discussions as a top choice for setting sprays. Users praise its ability to keep makeup intact through various conditions, including hot tubs and rain [2:6]. It's also noted for its longevity, with some users reporting that their makeup remains flawless even after sleeping in it
[2:8]. This spray is often recommended for those looking for a reliable option that can withstand long hours and challenging environments
[4:1],
[4:6].
Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray
Another highly recommended product is the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray. Users find it effective in keeping makeup in place, even under masks [4:1],
[4:3]. It’s praised for being one of the few setting sprays that truly delivers on its promises, making it worth the investment
[4:8].
Milani Make It Last
For those seeking an affordable yet effective option, Milani Make It Last is highlighted as a great choice. It's known for locking makeup in place all day and offering different options tailored to various skin types [1:1]. Users appreciate its performance given its budget-friendly price point.
Ben Nye Final Seal
Ben Nye Final Seal is recommended for its strong hold, often used in theatrical settings to ensure makeup stays put under intense conditions [5:5]. It’s alcohol-based, so caution is advised during application, but it's celebrated for its durability
[5:11].
Morphe Continuous Setting Mist
The Morphe Continuous Setting Mist is favored for its fine mist application and ability to reduce powderiness while keeping makeup set [2:2],
[2:5]. However, some users note that the scent may not be suitable for everyone
[2:3].
Additional Tips
While setting sprays are crucial, they work best when used in conjunction with other techniques. Applying a light layer of translucent powder before and after makeup application can enhance staying power [4:4]. Additionally, using primers and choosing the right foundation consistency can prevent makeup from transferring or breaking down
[5:1],
[5:2].
In the past I’ve had All Nighter by Urban Decay, and Hangover by Too Faced, I seem to remember preferring Hangover. But it’s been a while since I had a setting spray and wondered if anyone had any big recommendations?
As a make up artist, I’m not a big fan of setting sprays but there are ones that work to help make your make up stay on. These are the ones that have alcohol higher up on the ingredient list because it creates a seal on the face and it seals the make up in. The thing that works best if you really need your make up to stay in place is hairspray but I don’t recommend doing that every day because that’s not good for your skin. Lol
Makeup Revolution infinite matte setting spray
Charlotte Tilbury Setting Spray
Urban Decay all nighter
PUR Minerals Lit Mist (I believe they have matte version too) is undefeated in my book. And cruelty free!
I like Skindinavia.
Milani Make It Last is legit one of the best setting sprays I've ever used, and it's affordable! It really does a great job of locking your makeup in all day. They have different options for different skin types, too!
all of my setting sprays either move my makeup or they just make me look so oily. does anybody have any recommendations for a spray that’s not too matte but not oily looking? i’m desperate lol i need something to lock in my makeup and make me look glowy but not greasy. please help!!! thank you so much loves💖🤎💕
Nothing beats the morphe mist imo!! It takes away the powderiness yet helps my face stay set all night!
Agree with the Morphe one. Plus it’s a continuous mist so it’s not as jarring to put on like other sprays!
I like the Urban Decay sprays, they're a little pricey but good. The NYX matte setting spray is good too, at a lower price point. I've also heard great things about the Morphe one, but personally the scent gives me a headache so I don't use it.
I actually picked up the NYC matte a few weeks ago (I had ran out of my usual All nighter) and I just went into Walmart. I love it and have been using it ever since! Can't beat the lower price point either!
*It's cheaper if you get the bigger bottle on Amazon. I haven't been able to find the larger bottle in stores.
Hiya! Makeup artist here, my favs to use are the Urban Decay All Nighter, and MAC fix+. I've heard good things about the Morpe one but I haven't used it myself. But it seems like the issues you're describing with your makeup aren't something that can be solved by just a setting spray. :)
If you think about it, spraying a setting spray over the top of your makeup will definitely help to melt any products together ON TOP of your skin, but it's not going to do anything to help it actually stick to your skin underneath.
Usually makeup breaks up through the day due to oils coming through from your skin, underneath your makeup. This is why using a good primer is so much more effective than just a setting spray when it comes to the longevity of your makeup. (some of my favs are the maybelline fit me primers, milk hydro grip, and ELF putty primers.
I love using setting spray after I've done liquid foundation and concealer, and then I let it dry for a few minutes before powdering lightly over the top. I find I use less setting powder when I do this, and the makeup looks smooth and lasts all day.
Hope this helps!
This is so insightful! Is any of those good on dry skin? Been avoiding setting sprays in fear they might dry me out too much
Look for anything that says "dewy" or "hydrating" on the bottle :) MAC Fix+ is very hydrating but lightweight. Makeup Revolution sells one called "hyaluronic fix" that's a lot cheaper but a good alternative!
Agreed with the Urban Decay one (it’s my favourite) and the Mac fix +
Also here to promote Urban Decay All Nighter. You can seriously sleep in your makeup & wake up looking pretty much the same as the night before. (Obviously sleeping in your makeup isn’t the best, but I’m JS it’s amazing.)
The youtuber/influencer NikkieTutorials came out with a skin care/makeup prep line and I'm IN LOVE with her primer! It's called Where it All Starts Cream. It does magic!! Not only does it make my base look flawless when I apply it, even after 12 hours of wear, I have very little movement - and that's after spending that 12 hours in Disneyland in early fall (so still 85+ degrees) lol Highly recommended giving it a try!!
"Designer" brand - Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray
Went into a hot tub in the rain with a full face of makeup & it didn't move!
Spilt coffee on my face while trying to drink it and my makeup still looked flawless.
"Drugstore" brand - NYX matte finishing spray.
NYX matte spray, in a black bottle :)
My makeup always smudges and goes on everything I touch! help! Right now, I'm using Nyx Long lasting matte spray and, for example, when I talk on the phone, my case in covered in foundation after. Is there a spray that will really keep things in place or am I doing something wrong or expecting too much of a setting spray?
Do you have oily, dry, normal or combination skin ? It can also helps us to know what advice to give.
Do you use liquid, stick or powder foundation ? Do you use powder after applying moist products to "lock" them ? Do you use primer for the foundation, and the eyeshadows ? Primers really helps for eyeshadows for my oily lids. For the mascara, do you use waterproof or not ? (I don't use waterproof, and my mascara tends to smudge a little bit at the top, under my eyebrows thanks to my hooded eyes, but I really like my mascara, and it doesn"t exists in waterproof).
I have oily skin (now more combination thanks to skincare), but I user UD All Nighter BEFORE putting on make-up (following Robert Welsh advice on how to prep oily skin for make-up), and I use it also after.
I think I have kind of oily skin. I've never used a primer. Ive always used liquid foundation and set with a powder. I don't use water proof either, but I don't usually have any issues there. Just with my foundation (and sometimes my liner). I just want to be able answer my phone without it being the same color as my face after lmao So you putting the setting spray FIRST? Before anything else, like a primer?
Yes and no. I use it before primer to lock sebum from my oily skin. If you don't have oily skin, it's not a useful tip.
But, yes, you should try a setting spray, the classic OG is the UD All Nighter, I think you can find it in mini, or in holiday pack if you don't want to invest in a full size one.
It can also depends if you're living in a hot country, dry, humid, etc. And, it can also be a reaction between your skincare product and your foundation. Your skincare can break-up your foundation too.
Yeah, it's a nightmare to find the right stuff ! I hope you'll find a solution to your problem !
Agree that Charlotte Tilbury has the best one. I’ve tried a bunch and no other comes close.
urban decay all nighter or the milani make it last
Thank you I'll try them out

Charlotte Tilbury setting spray is my holy grail. Urban decay all nighter is my lower priced alternative.
alright, so ill start off with UD than lol thank you!
i’m tryna find a really good setting spray that will hold my makeup for shifts at work while wearing a mask LOOL. today i wore the morphe continuous setting mist and for the most part is good but i want something better.
Urban Decay All Nighter and Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless are my go to setting sprays. Best practice, go in with your spray after putting on foundation/concealer, and one more time at the end of your makeup application (I do my final spritz before applying mascara, which is my last step).
omg thank u!! i’ve heard really good things abt the charlotte tilbury spray but wasn’t sure if it was worth the hype, ty again!
I love the CT one as well. The only setting spray that works for me
Charlotte Tilbury and Milk Makeup are the only mask proof setting sprays I've discovered.
Definitely worth it. In my opinion it’s about as bullet proof as a setting spray can be, and I wear a mask all day every day at work.
As others have recommended, the Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray but also the technique of putting on a light layer of translucent powder and then setting spray before you put your makeup on, then put all your makeup on and then set again with the spray. Lasts longer due to the base layer being able to hold any excess oil from your face.
Definitely Urban Decay All Nighter. That stuff keeps my makeup on 14 hours later. Not sure what’s in it maybe magic. But it’s hands down the BEST.
Ben Nye! Your makeup will not budge and it doesn’t feel gross either.
I hear the Ben Nye Final Seal is supposed to be bullet proof.
I used this for my underwater photography. Makeup didn't budge.
As is Krylon's. It makes sense since both brands have theater makeup. Hell, Krylon makes spray paint.
can confirm, I did summer marching band (DCI) for 5 years and it lasted for shows in the southern humid heat! came here to recommend :)
i'm so tired of my makeup smudging on my friends' and bf's shirts when we hug, it's so embarrassing 😭 affordable to mid range ones please
edit: thank you sm for the suggestions! 🤍💗
Setting spray isn’t going to stop this…that’s not what it’s for. You will need to start by using a lighter hand when you apply your makeup and/or setting with powder first.
Setting spray isn’t going to save you from makeup transfer if your makeup is on too thick or you have not set it with powder if the makeup is dewy. Setting spray works best when you’ve found the right amount of makeup and setting powder first. It’s intent is to preserve makeup not make it transfer proof.
this! since dialing back my foundation & getting some more “transfer proof” products, only then did setting spray work lol
I’ve never used a setting powder before. What’s a good one? And does it go under or on top of the setting spray?
My personal all time fave is the Coty Airspun! (yes it has a perfumey scent but that goes away basically immediately)
I usually do tinted moisturizer (instead of foundation), concealer, cream contour, then setting powder, then bronzer and blush and then setting spray (Urban Decay All Nighter).
This worked for me best! I tried the travel size first and liked this better than Morphe setting spray. I will be purchasing full size.
Ben Nye Final Seal. No other setting spray has ever worked for me, but this. I hear it's what funeral homes use on bodies. It's alcohol-based, so make sure you don't have any open cuts and keep your eyes firmly shut when you spray.
This. Mehron Barrier Spray is similar if unable to find Final Seal. Although the Mehron isn't as fine of a mist.
Omg I was literally thinking this was referring to Mehron. Mehron barrier spray is what I use.
This! Aka Barrier Spray. I wear it over face paint and go out to sweaty concerts and it stays SUPER well!
Came here to bring this one up. It was literally designed so that you can dance and sweat under hot stage lighting and not have your makeup run. It works especially well if you put it on after all your cream products, dry it with a fan, then put on your setting powder and powder products. Nothing is moving on your face.
Yep. I live in a hot, humid climate and use this every time I wear makeup.
Does anyone know of a makeup setting spray that actually works? Even if I use waterproof eye liner and mascara it always melts and flakes.
I use Urban Decay All Nighter. Seems to work well for me.
I use the black elf one. Just as good as or better than the urban decay.
I also use tubing mascara as it never runs even when my old waterproof mascara did.
I swear by Milani Setting Spray
Works great as a primer too
Co-signing this, works just as well as the expensive brands!
Yeah I never looked back. I can be in the wind, have allergies, sneeze a ton and sweat and my wings stay!
Charlotte Tilbury
One/Size
I’m on the market for a new setting spray - I’m using Too Faced Hangover at the moment, and while it’s lovely and refreshing and smells amazing, I’m not sure it really does anything in terms of setting makeup! What are your recommendations?
EDIT: Thank you all SO much for all your recommendations ya bunch of angels!! I thought it would be beneficial for anyone else looking for new setting sprays to just compile all the recommendations into a list below to save you scrolling through everything, and I've put them in order of how many people recommended them. Thank you everyone again I can't wait to try some of these out! I'll update it as new suggestions are added :)

Charlotte tilbury airbrush flawless setting spray! I gifted it to my sis too and she wears masks for long periods of time and says she notices a difference in makeup lasting versus using urban decay all nighter and versus not using anything at all
I second this!!! Sets makeup like no other
I do love Charlotte Tilbury products so I’m not sure why I’ve never tried this one - thank you so much!
Urban Decay All Nighter
I recently bought it and I find it does help but the makeup still transfers to masks. Definitely not as much as not using any spray but significantly. Do you all experience the same?
I’ve noticed if I use a light dusting of Laura mercier powder before I spray, it doesn’t rub off as easily!
Try charlotte tilbury! There's barely any transfer to mask
Same, same. Been using it for YEARS. I actually use two because I’m high maintenance. One initially after all powder is done, and then urban decay at the end to lock it all in.
Agreed! I have combo skin and it doesn't dry me out and yet still helps my makeup to last all day.
I have oily skin and I love the NYX matte spray. Works so well for me in the summer too.
I have very dry skin and many foundations, on their own, never last. They end up patchy amd broken up by the afternoon as my dry skin would suck it all up.
I found this setting spray routine (here or maybe YT?) and it has really made my makeup last. I rotate different foundations and this method has even made IT Cosmetics CC cream last for 12+ hours, which is NOT generally an very long-lasting formulation. My other foundations last even longer.
This method, especially for dry skin, may seem counter-intuitive, but I now swear by it. I use 2 setting sprays.
Good skin care prep and moisture.
Mineral sunscreen (I only use mineral sunscreens because all the chemical ones make my watery eyes burn). I think however, the mineral sunscreen severs a dual purpose of providing a layer that locks in the moisture/skin care and also prevents the next steps from over absorbing into the skin.
Very lightly dust face with Wet & Wild HD Focus setting powder in Translucent. (This is a HG powder, amazing)
Spray with a moisture setting spray (have used at this step Mac Fix+, Too Faced Hangover, Flower Beauty, Tarte Rainforest, Hard Candy Glow and a few others). This step adds some moisture and is basically setting the light powder down to melt into the skin.
Next I use a mosturing primer (ELF hydrating, Too Faced, Catrice, Flower). Use the primer that's best for your skin type.
Apply foundation and rest of makeup.
Again, use a very very light dusting of powder. These powder layers are whisper light. Lately I have been using Urban Decay's All Nighter Waterproof setting powder here. Still though, just a light dusting.
Lock everything in with Urban Decay All-nighter setting spray.

This routine makes my makeup look fresh and last 12+ hours till I get home.
Morphe continuous setting mist. I just love that is an aerosol and gives such an even application throughout the entire face. Setting spray formulas with alcohol are all very similar to me so its all about the mister
Same! The mist mechanism is great. Sometimes with some setting sprays they leave large droplets on your face. The morphe doesn't, also they sell it in a travel size too.
I like the Mac Fix +. It keeps my makeup on much longer than the other sprays I've tried.
I’m a long time fix plus lover. I love how it melts my make up into my skin and keeps me looking glowy but not greasy.
I actually really like the Charlotte Tilbury but the smell is awful. I spray it before foundation and again after power. Even short wearing foundations will last the whole day.
I love charlotte tilbury as well. The only setting spray that actually makes a difference for me.
What are the differences in your results spraying before and after vs. just after powder?
For me it makes foundations that I could use for a normal work day (14+ hours), like the Fenty Eaze Drops or the Dior Air flash, last the full day. Just spraying at the end will bump them by an hour or two, but sandwiching bumps them to all day wear.
This is my favourite as well but the two that I have used up does not smell bad … keeps your makeup on all day!
I swear by Rare Beauty’s Always an Optimist 4-in-1 Prime and Set Mist! I’ve repurchased it several times now.
Urban Decay All Nighter because it has been the most long-lasting in my humid and hot environment.
Ive tried SO many and it is the only one that works for a long time especially in hot weather
If you want to buy a makeup fixer go for pac micro finish or even mars for that matter its so good and inexpensive and for setting spray you should pick milani or if under budget then maybelline .
3 of them are makeup fixer … but Milani one is so good and even maybelline !
My bad still confused between what a makeup fixer and setting spray is 💀 but i got it now
I LOVE the nyx one. Hands down the best ever
Milani ✨
I can vouch for the Nyx one. It keeps my face matte even in Goan humidity!
What I normally do is spray twice: once after I do my eyes (if I’m wearing eyeshadow+liner) and once after I do my base. Else, I spray after I do my base, let it dry and then do my liner+lip. That way I just need to top my lip up…
Hey all, I tend to really know myself when it comes to the makeup that’s made for me, but I keep striking out when it comes to setting sprays, or at least not being particularly wowed.
I have tried all the trendy one: CT, Makeup by Mario, Benefit poreless, One Size up all night, and the UD, Mac Fix+. Even though it’s not technically a setting spray, I do have pretty good luck with the Mac, just to sort of set things into place and the OSB one definitely does keep makeup on my face and is the one I will use if I really need it plastered to my face all night. But for everyday use I often find that setting sprays really texturize my late thirties skin and don’t leave my makeup feeling “melted together” or refreshed as most of them promise. Anyone have any HG’s or recs to get better use of of these?
I hate them all. I agree, they texturize my face. Im 45, and without spray I look pretty smooth. Past week ive been trialing sprays and I look SO CAKEY.
What I do use everyday and love, because it just takes the powder down and melts everything together (I don't like to look super matte): Mario Badescu Rosewater spray, the OG pink one,. It really just mimics what my skin does naturally after several hours of wear.
I know some people have issues with MB (moral not skin issues), so really any rosewater could work but I cant vouch. I've tried MB and another brand, and I prefer the MB. It's HG for me, forever repurchase.
I really like the Caliray setting spray. It’s incredibly light and refreshing.
I use the Morphe, seems to keep my makeup in place all day and is reasonably priced.
Please try EADEM, Caliray, too faced hangover, rare, Patrick ta, refy
Since you like MAC fix+, I'd recommend the Rare Beauty setting spray. I found it to be super similar to Fix+ while providing longer lasting makeup (Fix+ doesn't do much for me). It also helps makeup melt into place; you just need to remember to shake it. There's also the Milk Makeup hydrogrip setting spray (also needs to be shaken); I'd only recommend that one if you like dewy makeup and if you don't mind the strong nozzle.
best makeup setting sprays
Key Considerations for Makeup Setting Sprays:
Finish Type: Choose between matte, dewy, or natural finishes based on your skin type and desired look. Matte sprays are great for oily skin, while dewy sprays work well for dry skin.
Longevity: Look for sprays that claim to extend makeup wear for several hours (8-16 hours is common). Check reviews for real-world performance.
Ingredients: Consider sprays with skin-friendly ingredients like aloe vera, glycerin, or vitamins that can hydrate and nourish the skin.
Application Method: Some sprays come with a fine mist applicator, which helps distribute the product evenly without disturbing your makeup.
Skin Type Compatibility: Make sure the spray is suitable for your skin type (oily, dry, sensitive) to avoid irritation or unwanted shine.
Top Recommendations:
Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray: Known for its long-lasting formula (up to 16 hours), it provides a matte finish and is suitable for all skin types.
MAC Prep + Prime Fix+: This versatile spray hydrates, sets makeup, and can be used as a primer. It offers a natural finish and is great for dry skin.
NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray: A budget-friendly option that provides a matte finish and helps control shine throughout the day.
Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist: Ideal for dry skin, this spray gives a dewy finish and is infused with skincare benefits.
Recommendation: If you're looking for a reliable all-rounder, the Urban Decay All Nighter is highly praised for its performance and versatility. For a more budget-friendly option, the NYX Matte Finish is an excellent choice without compromising on quality.
