TL;DR
Aquaphor
Aquaphor is frequently mentioned as a top choice for baby moisturizers, especially for those with sensitive skin or eczema. Many parents have found it effective for treating dry, rashy, or red skin, often seeing improvements overnight [3:4],
[3:6]. It's also recommended by pediatricians and dermatologists, making it a reliable option for many families
[3:4].
CITTA Moisturizing Baby Balm
The CITTA Moisturizing Baby Balm is another popular recommendation, praised for its all-natural ingredients, including shea butter and a blend of oils like coconut, almond, and olive oil [2:4]. Users appreciate its ability to keep skin hydrated throughout the day without causing irritation
[5:1]. It’s particularly noted for being effective on very dry and flaky skin
[2:1].
Aveeno Baby Line
Aveeno's baby products are well-regarded for their gentle and soothing properties. The Aveeno Baby Nighttime Balm, in particular, has been highlighted for its effectiveness in treating scaly and very dry skin [1:1]. This line is often recommended for babies with sensitive skin due to its hypoallergenic formulation.
Other Recommendations
These options offer a range of solutions depending on your baby's specific needs, whether it's sensitivity, dryness, or eczema. Always consider patch testing new products to ensure they suit your baby's skin.
My LO is VERY dry. His skin feels scaly. Does anyone have any good moisturizer recommendations? Thank you!!
The baby aveeno line is amazing. Or even specifically the nighttime body balm works wonders.
Thank you!
My baby's skin is very dry. No moisturizer stays on for long. Some advice would be really helpful.
Citta baby balm best moisturiser … after apply it’s moisturise skin whole day…my little brother also use this
Aaap baby balm use kar sakte ho.. Me citta baby balm use larti hu.. Yeh uski skin ko whole day moisturize rakhata hai
Use citta baby balm. This is very useful product for babyand enriched with Shea butter's magic and the goodness of eight oils, Coconut oil, Almond oil, Olive oil, Rice Bran Oil, Basil oil, Camphor oil, Soybean oil and turmeric oil the CITTA Moisturising Baby Balm is crafted to lock in moisture and keep delicate baby skin deeply nourished.
CITTA Moisturizing Baby Balm: One of the best out there! Perfect for dry to very dry and flaky skin, and daily use. Dermatologically tested.
We’ve been lucky with my 11 month old that her skin doesn’t seem overly sensitive. I obviously use baby soaps and laundry sauces but many different brands and knock on wood, she’s never had any sort of rash.
Recently though I’ve noticed that her cheeks seem to be pretty dry. They’re almost always pink to red, but upon looking closer I can tell they’re dried out. Almost looks like windburn but she hasn’t been outside in days.
I was looking for a “face” cream for babies but I’m having trouble finding any that say that’s what they’re specifically for. The only lotion we use is Aveeno nighttime baby lotion and I don’t want to rub something so scented on her face, and I don’t want to use nighttime lotion all day long. Any suggestions, mamas?
Tubby Todd all over ointment… we joke that it gives my LO her “J-LO” glow. But it’s really great for sensitive skin! (I actually have some for myself!)
Aquaphor! This is what we use for my son who had a lot of eczema when he was a baby. Recommended by our pediatrician and our dermatologist. I use it myself on my lips and hands during the winter!
This stuff is great and has never irritated my daughters skin. Also Aveeno has some good products but Aquafor is the winner for us.
Aquaphor!
I swear by Aquaphor!! I think it's magic and put it on anything rashy, dry, or healing (like cuts, scrapes, etc) and it never irritates sensitive skin and usually heals dry/red rashy cheeks overnight! I use it all the time
Different ones work best for different kids, but our favorites are aquaphor, Cetaphil (as long as there's no almond allergy) and cerave
Is the almond allergy thing because it contains almond oil? I have a mild almond allergy, I occasionally get cold sores but a sure fire way for me to get one is to eat more than a single almond in a 24 hour period lol. My fiancé doesn’t eat any kind of nuts so we don’t keep any in the house so idk if she is allergic or not.
I’ve always questioned whether I’m able to use stuff with almond oil or not. I know they “hide” it in a lot of products, so I’ve probably unknowingly used it before. But I’ve ended up throwing out a lot of lotions and chapsticks because I bought them without reading the ingredients and am too scared to knowingly use them lol
I don't remember what form of almonds it is. My kid is fine with it, but we had to be careful when a friend with almond allergies came over if we just put it on
Tubby Todd for sure, and breast milk baths
I am looking for a good moisturizer for my 1year old son having super dry and patchy skin. Please suggest a natural and safe product that would moisturize the skin intensely.
We use calendula (specifically the Weleda one) and it works brilliantly for my daughter. She has a few mild patches of eczema and generally dry skin, so I use this on the worse bits and a general moisturizer over the top. It also works miracles on rashes, minor grazes - I put it on everything 😅
Citta baby balm is really good and effective in keeping skin of my baby soft and hydrated. It's made with all nautral ingredients.
Unscented Tallow balm! Primally Pure makes a great baby tallow balm. 100% natural ingredients
Palmers have some really good products
Try Citta baby balm this is the best moisturiser for babies.. i am also using this for my toddler it gives super hydration and the texture was also very good.
My baby is 7 months looking for a good baby moisture that would not give him rashes which he is very prone to.Thank you
Alphanova Baby has a great lotion, natural, with really good ingredients.
There’s a Korean one called Atopalm and it is incredible. My mom is super sensitive and this was recommended to me as a dupe for skinceuticals triple lipid. But it is the biggest baby excema lotion in Korea and I’m on my 4th bottle of it. Highly recommend for kids and for adults. Use on your face for two days and just feel the way your skin changes. I use it on my three year old because we are in Chicago so this saved our lives in the winter. Make sure to get the Korean version of it. https://a.co/d/hZ7YyFB
When my son was that little I’d slather him up in aquaphor after the bath lol we made lots of jokes about him slugging like the tik tok girlies 😂
Agree with the Aquaphor! Best thing ever, both of mine had eczema and very sensitive skin.
Mustela stelatopia or hydra.
Try baby balm of citta. It's chemical-free and made with nautral ingredients. Amazing and effective in keeping skin hydrated and rash free too.
We live in Colorado and it’s so so dry right now. What do you guys use for moisturizer for your little one?
Tubby Todd ointment Dr green mom lotion
Haven’t tried yet but hear good things about Pipette
We use the ceravae tubs from Costco. Go through them pretty quick with my toddler, baby using them so it's nice to have a good price per oz that moisturizes really well.
These can be a little pricey but I’m absolutely obsessed with Kate McLeod lotion bars!! The product doesn’t contain any water - just cocoa butter and oil - and the packaging doesn’t contain any plastic. I sometimes buy scented bars for me but use the Unscented Stone for my daughter. I find it lasts a pretty good amount of time (though I go through mine much quicker) and the solid bar makes for a nice little bedtime massage routine.
ETA this would probably be fine for her face but since it’s not specifically formulated as a face moisturizer I use Earth Mama Baby Face and really like it
We buy big bottles of organic jojoba oil with a pump, and the whole family uses it after showers/baths! Our ped was ok with it and we started using it when our baby was very little. For her, once that soaked in I’d layer it with Babo Botanicals Sensitive Baby Fragrance Free Lotion… we still use this one now that she’s a toddler. And for extra dry spots, I’ll add Earth Mama Nose & Cheek balm or Pipette Balm on top.
Just fyi, in general oil is an occlusive and lotion is an emollient so you would want to layer oil over the lotion to optimize the effectiveness of each product.
Oh, thanks! I was under the impression that jojoba oil is more of a wax, which is why it’s so similar to human sebum and has more emollient properties.
Tallow is a great one
Hi all,
Anyone used any type of moisturizer on their newborns? If yes, what have you been using?
We’ve tried three kinds, Aveeno gave our baby a rash and apparently it’s pretty common. Cetaphil is good but it’s quite light so if your baby doesn’t have dry skin this is a good daily moisturizer.
Mustela is very creamy and moisturizes pretty well, it’s our favorite since our baby has pretty dry skin.
We liked Mustela too and used CeraVe moisturizer when we needed something thicker.
At what age did you start using them? My baby is just a few says old but with winter coming up and stuff I expect her skin to be dryer.
I had bought Aveeno but will be returning as Public health nurse also recommended against it.
Our doctor recommended to wait until she was a month old. You may see that the skin is “peeling” the first couple weeks after birth but that’s normal!
My baby currently has a realllly bad skin rash. Haven't solved it yet, working through some possibilities, but aveeno gave ours a rash too, and cetaphil was also too light. Can confirm haha.
Currently trying CeraVe and Aquafor (and a food diary for me in case of food allergies) while we wait for a referral to a specialist.
Coconut oil as recommended by our midwife
Coconut or Olive oil are the best moisturizers
Coconut oil! Midwife recommmended it due to it being natural with no additives
Laroche posay lipikar. I would like it to be thicker but I’m applying whenever I feel like her skin is dry. My girl had eczema so I try to stay on top of her skin hydration.
My 10 week old has very dry skin and wanting some tips! We don't bath him particularly often (once a week, moving to twice a week) and have recently got a water softener put in our home. He does get a daily massage which he loves and I wonder whether using the oil without water is exacerbating the problem!
We have tried - coconut oil, jojoba oil, shea butter and jojoba oil mix.
Any tips on what we could use? Preferably something we can use when he doesn't have a bath for massage too!
Edit: we don't use any soap, just scrub him with our hands!
Hey, I totally get it! I have five kiddos myself, with number six on the way, and we've definitely dealt with our share of dry skin. For my little ones, I trust gentle, soothing natural ingredients like grass-fed tallow and organic olive oil gently infused with calendula, chamomile, comfrey, plantain leaf, and rose petals— all found in The Brook from, Bristol Balms. I use this balm regularly on myself dealing with psoriasis and eczema and my kids, and it's truly calming and moisturizing for delicate, dry baby skin.
Hope your sweet little one finds relief soon!
I'd wash him only every two or more weeks unless he has a blow out or something. And when you wash him, use warm water with no soap unless really needed. I'd stop using product at all for a week and seeing what happens. I did this with my third kid and she has almost no baby acne or rashes like baby's often go through. Good luck!

If he is struggling with dry skin, I probably would not transition to more baths
Be sure to rinse with clear running water your baby after the bath. You don't want soap residue on the skin.
You should use an humectant prior to put any vegetable oil or vegetable butter on the day you do not bath your baby.
For truly dry skin, I use those "naturals" 2 options: homemade flaxseed of chiaseed gel minus the seeds aftereard. If you put a little bit more water to have it runny, you can apply the gel on your baby skin AND THEN put the oil or butter on the skin.
The other option would be to mix water with a little bit of vegetable glycerin and a little bit of liquid Vitamin E, apply it on your baby's skin, then apply the oil and butter.
Trust me, just putting oil or butter on a dry skin when there is not moisture is not "usefull".
You could wet a big towel with hot water, and wrap your baby in it, wait 2 to 5 minutes, then procede to applying your oil or butter.
Finally, I would prioritized a BUTTER over an OIL if he truly have a dry skin.
But a little bit of added liquid Vitamine E is truly truly wonderful.
My favorite vegetable butter for hella dry skin is unrefined shea butter. In my life, for my own skin, I have tried a lot, and this is the one. (Capuaçu, kokum, cacao, mango, murumuru, shea butter) Cocoa butter was also nice.
Finally, you could gently exfoliate your baby's skin with a SURFINE clay or something, once a month or once every 2 months. Sometimes, when you truly have a dry skin, the dry skin build up can "make it" harder for the skin to absorb the wet and oily you apply on it.
Finally, you could use some wax with your oil or butter, with the prior step of getting the skin somewhat humid/wet. So, as for waxes, I am thinkng about carnauba, candellila that you could melt with your butter, and that could give a more protective layer.
Thank you, this is so helpful!
I have been using Kiehls moisturizer and it was working great for a while, now not so much. I don’t really have a routine, just wash with water and moisturize. My skin is pretty flaky and it’s really noticeable when I wear tinted moisturizer/foundation.
If anyone has any recommendations please let me know!! Also, I am 8 months pregnant and drink plenty of water!
Aestura Ato Barrier cream is my go to.
I cannot switch to anything since I have started kiehls. Nothing comes close to it specially in east coast winters :( Try waiting for 3-4 min for moisturizer to absorb and then try makeup may be?
I truly do love the kiehls moisturizer, makes me sad that it doesn’t work as good as it used to, I’m eastern Canada so it can get extremely cold!
Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair Cream at night, Skinfix Triple Lipid or Kopari Moisture Whipped Ceramide Cream during the day. Eadem Cloud Cushion Airy Moisturizer is also very good.
I’ll take a look at these and read about them, thanks!
You’re very welcome. All the best for the rest of your pregnancy!
Tatcha Dewy, Dr. Jart Ceramidin.
Kiehls midnight recovery concentrate is a very moisturizing oil, you add like 2-3 drops before your moisturizer & it makes a big difference! (Also exfoliate once or twice a week!)
Our LO is due next week and I am still on the search for a good baby lotion. I obviously love the smell of the Johnson and Johnson one but I don’t feel comfortable using that brand. Does anyone know a reliable / safe brand that smells like the Johnson & Johnson? Or just any baby lotion in general that you’ve used that you love?
We haven't used any soap or lotion on our 5.5month old baby and his skin is perfect. Never had nappy rash either because we use facewashers with water instead of babywipes.
My understanding is it’s not recommended to use lotion for a little while. My ped isn’t a fan, saying they too easily absorb everything so young. I was advised to use aquaphor on dry skin for a while. She’s 3 months right now and it did help a lot, especially since my LO has eczema
Ohh I wasn’t aware of that! Thank you I’ll buy some aquaphor! Which kind did you purchase ?
Just the aquaphor baby! Definitely do not recommend the squeeze bottle, go for the tub lol. The squeeze is awful to get out 😂
My pediatrician says no scented anything. When I asked about my baby's dry skin she recommended Cetaphil lotion, not baby anything, their boring, unscented normal lotion.
I'm using Cetaphil for sensitive skin. Love it, 8 wo skin is so soft
I love the Noodle & Boo baby lotion!
I recommend you ladies check your products on ewg! It tells you how safe everything is. Surprising results. If it’s not listed in the database you can custom analyze an ingredients list
best moisturizer for babies
Key Considerations for Choosing a Baby Moisturizer:
Gentle Ingredients: Look for moisturizers that are free from fragrances, parabens, and harsh chemicals. Natural ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, and aloe vera are often gentle and effective.
Hypoallergenic: Choose products labeled as hypoallergenic to minimize the risk of allergic reactions, especially for sensitive baby skin.
Dermatologist-Tested: Opt for moisturizers that have been tested by dermatologists or pediatricians, ensuring they are safe for use on babies.
Consistency: Creams or ointments are generally thicker and provide more moisture, while lotions are lighter and may be easier to apply. Choose based on your baby's skin needs.
Purpose: Consider what you need the moisturizer for—daily hydration, treating dry patches, or soothing diaper rash. Some products are specifically formulated for these purposes.
Recommendations:
Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment: This is a versatile option that provides a protective barrier and is great for dry skin and diaper rash. It's fragrance-free and dermatologist-recommended.
Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion: This lotion contains natural colloidal oatmeal and is designed for daily use, providing long-lasting moisture while being gentle on sensitive skin.
Cetaphil Baby Daily Lotion: This is another excellent choice, enriched with organic calendula, and is known for its soothing properties and lightweight feel.
Always perform a patch test when trying a new product to ensure your baby doesn't have an adverse reaction.
