TL;DR
Eco-Friendly Candle Options
For those seeking nontoxic and eco-friendly candles, beeswax and soy candles are highly recommended. Beeswax candles are praised for their natural properties and can often be found at farmers markets and local stores [4:3]
[4:4]. Soy candles made with essential oils are another popular choice, with vendors like Cupcake Candle Company offering delightful scents and designs
[4:5].
Handcrafted and Local Vendors
Etsy is a great platform to explore for handcrafted candles, where vendors such as Eight Hands Farm and Bee Co. provide candles with natural scents [4:2]. Additionally, local head shops and boutiques may carry unique soy wax candles that are worth checking out
[4:6].
Popular Scents and Brands
Several brands and scents have been highlighted across discussions. Keap Candles' Wood Cabin and Boy Smells' Ambrosia are favorites among candle enthusiasts [1:3]
[1:4]. For transitioning from summer to fall, Voluspa's Foraged Wildberry and Jo Malone’s Wood Sage and Sea Salt are recommended
[2:1]
[2:5].
Seasonal and Gourmand Choices
If you're looking for seasonal or gourmand candles, Goose Creek offers enticing options like Caramel Apple and Sweet Potato Beignet [5:1]
[5:4]. Marshmallow Fireside from Bath & Body Works remains a perennial favorite
[3:4], while other sweet scents like Pumpkin Sugar Cookie and Merry Cookie are also well-loved
[5:5]
[3:7].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
When selecting a natural candle, consider the sustainability of the ingredients and the ethical practices of the vendor. Look for candles that use cotton or wood wicks and avoid those made with palm oil due to its environmental impact. Exploring local artisans and small businesses can lead to discovering unique and high-quality candles that align with your values.
I recently got the candle bug and started a bit of a collection
What are your favorite candles of all time?
Brands top scents. A Cheerful Giver.
Goose creek.
Candleberry
1.black cashmere. IMO way better version of midsummer night yc.
2. Beach collection. All are good
Sugar cane mist. Sun glitter. Pink sugar.
3. Cranberry. Found several that aren’t my cup of tea. Mainly because I don’t care for cake, muffins, bread, donuts gourmand type scents.
Yankee candle
Chesapeake bay. Lots of good ones.
Wood Cabin by Keap Candles
Yankee Candle - Sugared Apple, Sage and Citrus, Kitchen Spice, Jasmine Green Tea
Nest - Autumn Plum
Apotheke - Verdant Garden
Boy Smells - Ambrosia
Kacey Musgraves x Boy Smells Deeper Well candle is top tier. Also Saffron Rose from Paddywax.
My absolute favorite was the three wick Herbal Essence candles from 1999 ~ 2001 ish. They were wonderful. They had flowers inside of the wax making them appear very feminine ❤️
I hate to admit it, but I'm starting to get the itch to light some of my autumn candles--I'm trying to resist the urge! One that I have in my collection that comes to mind is Foraged Wildberry by Voluspa (fallen leaves, cassis berry, wild blackberry, and golden amber) but would love other recs for candles that transition from summer to fall.
We’ve had fake fall weather the past couple of days and I’ve lit a couple of autumn candles already 🫣🫣 Mostly giant cheapies from Home Goods with names like “golden leaves” and other such nonsense, but I’ve also been really into Libertine by August & Piers which is very smoky, decadent, and rich, which reminds me of fall. It was 50% off in the blue mercury sale which might still be going on! Trudon’s Ernesto is another one I love.
I feel ya! I admit that BBW's Marshmallow Fireside will always be a part of my repertoire.
Good call on the Ernesto, I just pulled mine out of the box and I think it could be a good candidate from summer to fall.
Love Marshmallow Fireside always!
Yay! Glad you have a good option and don’t have to buy anything new! I need to stop buying new ones…but it’s so hard with all these sales 🤣
Fig! Diptyque Figuier, Carrière Frères Ficus, Volupspa Forbidden Fig, etc
The Queen candle from Nette! It smells like late summer to me — honey and dry hay and is divine
Edit to add: August & Piers Socialite is also a good transition scent. The pomegranate, amber and woods give it that perfect berry/sweet/slightly woody combo that reminds me of early autumn.
I like Jo Malone’s Wood Sage and Sea Salt for the transition from August to September.
Maybe Trudon Odelisque? I love it and to me it’s warm like a soft fire with burnt orange.
I want to see what everyone’s favorite candles from B&BW are!
My number ONE is Carmel pumpkin swirl. I have many other favorites but that’s one I stock up on and burn all year for many years. It never gets old 🔥
Main Street bakery
Funny enough, I have the single wick and I’ve lit it probably 10 times but I light it only for an hour because it’s so strong!
OMG I love this one! It smells like banana pudding to me lol and I'm not usually a fan of sweet candles but I make an exception here
I also really like the new sugar cone crunch it’s a similar scent without the banana notes. 😋
Marshmallow fireside
Same. The blueprint for smoky marshmallow scents I swear.
My absolute fave
Merry cookie is another favorite! Super yummy!
Fiji white sand
Hot Cocoa and Cream!! Followed by Champurrado/Feliz Navidad
These 2 are in my top 3- these are SO good! Especially on a cold day! My all time fave is Paris Cafe
Oh those are so good!!! Did you smell the Eggnog candle? I think the name made people turn away from it but I think you would have liked that one also!
Anyone have any recommendations for eco-friendly nontoxic candles? Preferably votive size. I saw that Whole Foods sells a brand called GoodLight but it's made with palm oil which is not sustainable. Looking for alternative options. Thanks!
Check on Etsy. Tons of people selling beeswax or soy candles with natural or essential oil scents. My current favorite vendor is eight hands farm and bee co., their candles smell so nice
I would start with beeswax candles and then research brands in your area.
Literally any pure beeswax? I don’t know about where you live but in my town I can get them at the farmers market, the natural food co-op, the local herb (not weed) store, and various trinket stores and boutiques.
I actually pick up some awesome soy wax candles at a local head shop - it might be worth checking if that's something you're comfortable with!
Cupcake Candle Company sells homemade soy wax candles made with essential oils and either cotton or wood wicks.
They're super cute and smell amazing, and they release new scents every season.
these almost look edible! yum yum so pretty
They had a booth at the Tacoma Food and Gift Show a few years ago. I don't know about now if it's even going with Covid and all, but the Cupcake Candle Company is still working hard.
Their candles all smell as good as they look. I don't think I've found one I haven't liked yet.
we make handcrafted nontoxic eco-friendly candles! here is our website :) https://earthsoaps-candles.com
thank you!
OK so I'm on a GC no buy because I have soooo many candles BUT Saturday is my birthday and I'm treating myself :) if you could buy one fall gourmand candle what would it be? I'm so torn between Caramel Apple, Pumpkin Sugar Cookie, Sweet Potato Beignet and Blueberry Skillet but gosh there are so many that I feel like I am forgetting.
My usual go to is Dutch Stroopwaffle but I dont see it anymore on the site....I hope its not discontinued.
I would go sweet potato beignet because it’s new and exciting lol I’ve never smelled it but that would be my pick! I will say I got pumpkin sugar cookie last year and never got around to burning it cuz it’s just kinda ok.
Thank you! I have heard really good things about sweet potato beignet.
Burning it now 🤌🏾😮💨🥰
For me it would be Caramel Apple! Love the label too. I just received an order the other week from goose creek and I wanted to place another. However, after going into my candle cupboard 🫣 I really need to stop buying and start burning more lol.. goose creek is fast becoming my fave! I hope you have a lovely birthday on Saturday 🥰.. let us know what candle you decide to treat yourself too.
Same! I have sooo many candles but they keep putting out new scents that sound so good! Shoot im just now burning my Ghost Stories from last year.
Thank you for the birthday wishes :)
Definitely sweet potato beignet. I haven’t smelled it yet (it’s coming Friday) but the other scents seem to come out every year.
Pumpkin Sugar Cookie is amazing!
Marshmallow snowcream or pinacolda!
Is marshmallow snowcream out yet?
I live in Germany and it was available here!
I am prone to migraines and am trying to stay away from harsh chemicals and toxins in fragrances. Looking for an all-natural candle company to shop at, with their ingredients listed if possible!
Check out www.candelleinc.com launching in November 2023. They use only ingredients directly from nature with beeswax from US organic farms and pure essential oils
Check out your local farmers market. If there is a honey vendor there is a good chance they will be selling beeswax candles.
I get beeswax candles at my local farmer's market. No toxic chemicals, just 100% natural beeswax. Also, the candle smells like honey.
Candles are not toxic unless you are eating them. Toxic candles are a myth because candles are not made with lead and other toxic substances anymore.
Tbf It could just be the scent that's giving you migraines, scents like lavender have been known to cause headaches/migraines
But that being said all natural candles are always better
Check out www.candelleinc.com launching in Nov 2023! All nontoxic candle ingredients are directly from nature
I have been a candle/wax melt enthusiast since I was a kid, I love things that smell good, more than the average person. I have a studio apartment, just a bedroom and bathroom however the bedroom is very large, it is a very old home with extremely high ceilings, I can climb up a 12ft ladder and barely reach the ceiling fan to clean it.
Anyway, enough background info. I have been on a very expensive quest to find the absolute best and strongest smelling candles that will fill my apartment with a fantastic scent (but not strong enough that it basically punches you in the face).
The candles also must be affordable, nothing insane like $50
With this post I hope I can get steered in the right direction, Thank you all!
And the scent is coming through my room with the door closed and smells so good also they have a sandalwood smell the jars are 17 ounces each
I'll have to check out my local store this weekend! I love Sandalwood, it is my favorite scent followed by pine & other woodsy scents!! Thank you! Right now I have a Goose Creek "in the forest" going and it's throwing pretty well. I do think their smaller 3 wick jars throw better than the large two wick jars.
LOVE sandalwood
DW Home candles are very affordable. Check out TJX, Homegoods, and Marshall's. You can read the reviews on their website. Dwhome.com
I’d love to hear your B&BW recommendations. I’m absolutely obsessed with the Palo Santo scent. Anything else you can recommend that’s similar in profile, woodsy, or fresh?
Mahogany teakwood is a really good woodsy one. They also sell a high intensity version that has more fragrance oils, so that might be a good option. I know from experience the throw on this baby is high. You definitely have better luck finding these sorts of scents during fall/Christmas with them unfortunately. Most of what they are going to have now would be fruity or floral for spring/summer.
If you’re open to other things I’d recommend bergamot waters, limoncello, or the stress relief (eucalyptus spearmint). These in my opinion have the strongest throws of any of their candles and are carried year around.
White barn is nice for mid range , if your willing to go another 10 Diptyque or jo Malone would be the best for throw .
I agree with white barn, sand and fog are quite nice too, I like their tropical citrus. I disagree on more expensive is better, I've had Jo Malone, (not Diptyque) and they're not any better for the price
I have a Sand and fog ( the paws one ) someone gave me for Christmas, can’t wait to try it ! I love the Diptyque .. I just burned a small size ( votive size ) in pomander for a hour and it scented my entire bedroom / master bath area ( pretty large rooms ) so much I had to open the doors lol and my jo Malone scents my room if I take the lid off without even lighting it ❤️❤️. My husband got me a LV last week and WOW .. one I almost sent it back because of cost but it was sweet so I kept it and if you take the lid off the entire living area smells like roses absolutely love it ! I do have a entire closet of white barn and yankee that I use daily and they do smell great ( YC not as great anymore) but really only when lit .
I have been thoroughly impressed with Jazz Candles based out of Louisiana. They are incredibly strong, and I have tried A LOT of candle brands. I think what sets them apart is that they use different wicks depending on the scent type so that the fragrance oils burn better.
It’s almost two years later, but I bought some Jazz candles and thanks for the tip!
Any update on those jazz candles? Lol
I wanna get a good brand of candles but having trouble on deciding which one for different parts of my home :) any recommendations would be great!
Pfcandles I love Golden Coast and the Tobbaco and Teakwood ones. They have a really good throw
I second PF Candles and want to add in Bijou candles!
Aldi candles
Jo Malone , Diptyque , and Louis Vuitton
For a unbeatable throw on a candle unfortunately the cost point can go up .. now something like BBW the teakwood intense really has a good throw for 25.00 .
Nest candles are also amazing.
B&BW and Aldi candles for me.
My husband is obsessed with candles and refuses not to burn them
If you’re looking for clean-burning candles, it’s essential to go for those made with natural ingredients like soy wax, beeswax, or coconut wax. These types of candles burn slower, produce less soot, and don’t release harmful chemicals like paraffin candles do.
Some great clean-burning brands I recommend are:
If you’re looking for high-quality, clean-burning candles that are also eco-friendly, definitely check out Serene Spark. They offer premium, long-lasting options without the harmful chemicals, so you can enjoy your candle guilt-free!
Any time you burn anything, you’re going to have a negative impact on your air quality. From googling it seems like soy and beeswax candles are the cleanest candle base.
The biggest issue is the scents though. North America seems weirdly obsessed with having their air ‘smell good’ but scenting your air declines the air quality almost always. Fragrance oils are made of all sorts of random synthetic chemicals that are released and vaporized by the burning candle. Apparently essential oils aren’t as bad and some can have maybe positive benefits in the short term of burning the candle. The research on that seems inconclusive partly bc there’s a massive conflict of interest and ppl who sell this stuff can make all kinds of unsubstantiated claims.
I do think melts with essential oils or some sort of simmer pot with real things (citrus, herbs, etc) would probably be best for smells that are least harmful to your health. Fake candles are also pretty great at giving that warm glow and cozy flicker with no burning.
Thank you, I didn’t know if there was a nontoxic fragrance. Maybe my compromise can be a fake candle and I’ll boil different things for scent.
I love boiling orange and cinnamon for a room refresher. It also keeps bugs away!
Thank you, I’ve looked into this extensively for a request at work (to get people to stop using them) and this concurs with everything I’ve found from the EWG, OSHA, American Lung Association etc, I just didn’t have it in me to write it all out. Just breathe air people, it’s not that hard!
ETA: if you do get fake candles make sure they don’t use button batteries.
I found a set that is rechargeable, and really like that idea since my kids love playing with our LED tea candles. There is a charging station with pegs that plug into the bottom of the candles, so no changing batteries ever!
Bath and body works has a really good one called Champagne Toast
BTW, here's the Amazon List of Candles Recommended by other Reddit Members here.
I really like Paige’s Candle Company. They’re soy wax candles and use phthalate-free fragrance and essential oils. I’m not huge on scented candles in general, but their scents are amazing and not overpowering. And the company gives back to the community as well.
My mom makes all her own candles in her kitchen from soy wax. She also uses natural scents (the lavender is sourced from local farms) and uses cotton or wood wicks.
Would a candle warmer be an acceptable compromise? You still get the scent without the ash, etc.
I am sensitive to scents and use free and clear for pretty much everything, but I believe soy candles burn the cleanest, then beeswax, then paraffin. Keeping the wicks the correct height also helps with getting a cleaner (less smoky) burn.
Yes I think so I didn’t even think of that with them not producing smoke that’s a good idea.
If they use artificial scents or paraffin wax, they’re just as bad.
That’s soo cute
Honestly I bought about 20 fall candles and I don't LOVE LOVE any of them. I'm really a scent person and deeply love pumpkin coffee every year, but when I get all the pumpkin fall fragrances, they are terrible!! I want to leave a haul review before I shuttle everything off to Habitat for Humanity but am not sure where would be appropriate. Most are way too sweet and have no layering or any balance. It's like a too sweet desert, there is no refuge. I'm souring on fragrance oils. Also I think candle makers don't realize that not all fragrance oils are similar. Even with same name.
My favorites so far have been from Wndrmade New York. They are essential oil blends, but not what I would call fall candles. They have woody names but are very light luxe candles.
