Bars and Restaurants
For those looking to experience quintessential LA nightlife without the club atmosphere, the Sunset Strip offers a nostalgic vibe with places like the Rainbow Room [1:1]. West Hollywood is another area rich with bars and restaurants, providing a walkable and lively environment
[1:2]. For a touch of history and luxury, consider visiting Chateau Marmont for a drink
[1:4].
Cultural and Entertainment Events
Los Angeles offers a variety of cultural events at night. Jazz nights at LACMA are popular and provide a relaxed atmosphere with live music [2:1]. The city also hosts Critical Mass LA, a community cycling event that takes place at night
[2:2]. For those interested in live performances, venues like the Hollywood Bowl and the Greek Theatre often have concerts featuring a range of artists
[2:3].
Non-Bar Nighttime Activities
If you're looking for activities beyond bars and clubs, consider taking a late-night stroll along Santa Monica Pier or Rodeo Drive, which offer safer environments for evening walks [3:4]. Museums and other attractions like the Griffith Observatory and the Aquarium of the Pacific occasionally host nighttime events, providing unique experiences after dark
[4:3]
[4:5].
Clubs and Dancing
For those who enjoy dancing and socializing, areas like West Hollywood, Hollywood, and K-town are vibrant with clubs that cater to various musical tastes. Breakroom 86 and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in K-town offer retro vibes, while La Cita in DTLA is known for its lively atmosphere [5:1]
[5:4]. If you prefer a mix of hip-hop, R&B, and Latin music, venues like The Short Stop in Echo Park and Las Perlas for Latin beats might be ideal
[5:2]
[5:6].
Recommendations Beyond Discussions
Beyond these suggestions, it's worth exploring local event listings and checking out pop-up galleries or community events that might not be widely advertised but offer a genuine slice of LA's diverse nightlife. Always consider safety, especially when exploring new areas at night, and opt for well-lit and populated locations.
Hi, I am in town for one night and want to head out to some bars and grab dinner tonight. Not looking for clubs or anything flashy like that but just want to experience some quintessential LA nitelife. I’ve already been to the Frolic room in Hollywood which was super cool. I was thinking of the sunset strip is probably my best best as it has a lot of Hollywood nostalgia. Just wonder if anybody has any other good recommendations or areas to roam around for a few hours and see some cool stuff?
Many thanks!!!
Check out West Hollywood. Lots of restaurants and bars and clubs and very walkable
Sweet, I am not far from there at all : ) Thanks

Chateau Marmont is an absolute classic if you’re ok spending a few bucks.
Ah yes passed it earlier. Super intrigued by the history of the place. Will definitely try to swing by for a drink or something if possible.
J
The Rainbow Room on the Sunset Strip is probably your best bet.
Pretty much the title. I'm open to just about anything. Any ideas?
Top two things that are FREE that you can do this evening:
1.) Critical Mass LA. It's like Ciclavia but smaller/more intimate and only happens at night. Meets at Wilshire & Western around 7pm. Tonight's route goes all the way to SoFi In believe. Should have around 1,000 riders or so.
2.) Jazz @ LACMA. Always a good time. Vibes on point. Starts at 6pm. Ends around 8pm.

M
I'd love to know too
J
Work. Court deadlines don't change. ✊
My wife and I are in LA right now. We are looking for places that are okay to go around 10pm. We are not looking into nightclub or bar. We are thinking something like Santa Monica Pier. Would you guys suggest going to Venice Beach at night? How about Little Tokyo at night? Please kindly let us know where we can go at night. Thank you
That’s not a bar? Uhm, you don’t have many options… Maybe catch a late night movie somewhere like the Alamo or New Beverly? Go to Fred 62’s Diner in Los Feliz for a milkshake and fries? Idk. We live in a post-pandemic world, with a struggling economy, in an expensive city, where everyone stays home at night, and nothing is open late anymore… let me know what you find to do!
(as an aside, not helpful to OP's situation, but just a general comment/reply specifically to the comment above):
some areas are starting the long road back from covid, i was at a popup gallery DTLA friday nite & there were a hundred or so people there, fun time,
then a bar in Monrovia sunday nite to see some friend's bands play, it was packed, really going off
and places like Fullerton have been fun post-covid bar-hopping areas for a year now from what ive seen
the default areas people think of visiting around Los Angeles have become too moribund by their own sense of self to be much fun these days
...and, they were always expensive areas, but jeesh, they've become colon-clenchingly expensive of late...just outrageous prices..
but the geography of the County of Los Angeles allows there to be thousands of little of fun scenes that naturally pop up and are sustained by their communities, all around, just takes a little more digging than just the default usual suspects
Most of those are on the weekend. OP seems to be asking about tonight - a weeknight. Also OP said no bars or nightclubs so…
LA isn't really the city for non-bar/restaurant/venue oriented nightlife at 10pm. Unhoused folks will be getting ready to sleep in public spaces. Commercial businesses will be mostly closed. Definitely don't go to Venice Beach at 10pm.
Anything but Venice Beach at night.
This should be higher up. Please don’t go there, esp if you’re from out of town, at night to walk around! Not safe AT all. I will echo that Abbott Kinney is fine, and there’s good food. Just stay on that block tho. You could also stroll the Santa Monica Promenade, if you want a longer stretch to walk. Note that after 10p on a Saturday is more safe, compared to after 10p on a Tuesday, when there will be way less people around.
I agree with The Grove and Rodeo Drive for safe walking at night, although there may not be many people around/places open after 10p. But it would still be peaceful/relatively safe.
The House of Pies in Los Feliz may be open late to eat, and you can stroll the little block it’s on (again, don’t leave that block, tho!). This is near Griffith Park/Observatory, for reference!
Good luck! It’s not like it’s a scary town, per se, but LA is not exactly designed for night strolling, esp for out of towners.
Does anybody remember Venice beach (specifically the boardwalk) being fun and not as crazy at night. I'm mainly speaking about January of 2020 before everything closed.
I suggest going to Venice beach at night… if you want to get mugged, raped and murdered… and not necessarily in that order.
There are plenty of cities where 'strolling' is a safe and interesting late night activity both nationally and internationally, so long as you avoid certain areas if it's late enough. New York, Washington DC, Paris, London and even smaller places like Palo Alto, Portland and many midwestern cities with reinvigorated main streets are all places I'd happily explore at 10pm without getting the bad vibes and stymied exploration I'd get here in LA.
theres still street food after shows hollywood and dtla
Century city mall is stunning for out of towners. It’s not a traditional “mall.” And there’s The Grove. Walking along rodeo at night is nice too. I recommend the Venice/SM Pier in the day.
Good suggestion. Comedy is another great option. Maybe I’m old because I tend to go to the earlier shows.
Trying to just go out and have fun in la. Like dress up a little bit, see something beautiful. Any recommendations?
KCRW Summer Nights usually have a nighttime museum and DJ sets/drinks
A lot of museums, the zoo, and the Aquarium of the Pacific have night time special events throughout the year- you just have to check all their schedules and see what interests you!
Yes - Aquarium of the Pacific if you have to get to Long Beach - great choice
You just have to make reservations for it
Definitely going to the night dive in october. Any recommendations for museums at night?
LACMA has a seasonal evening party, next one is October 8.
Griffith Observatory. or Mt. Wilson is cool if it’s a clear night, you’re up for a drive, and you have binoculars
Getty is open until 9pm on Saturdays. I know it’s not late late, but still an option
Eat that the Getty restaurant at sunset, then have the museum practically to yourselves after dinner.
Maybe when it gets darker faster, thank you

Hi. My friends and I are looking for fun things to do tonight. I haven’t been out in a year and we are all in our late 20s! Is there any fun clubs or events tonight?
We all drink and we all like dancing/singing/ meeting people. We’d love to West Hollywood, Hollywood, and K-town. Thank you!!
Preferably, we’d love a club-ish/bar vibe that is litty (not just people standing around. So boring!). We prefer hip hop/rnb/latin music (say bad bunny vibe) and we like mixes of top hits!
It helps to know what kind of music you like.
For Ktown, Breakroom 86 and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang are usually pretty fun, if you like retro.
Davey Wayne's is also retro fun and in Hollywood. People dance and come up to you.
Sorry! You’re totally right! Like hop-hop/rnb/maybe Latin mix (bad bunny type).
The Short Stop in Echo Park is playing exactly that tonight.
You can also always try La Cita.
Venice Area: Roosterfish, Little Friend, Killer Shrimp Yacht Club(check their insta), Townhouse(downstairs-cover charge)
La Cita DTLA
What up doe In town 4 my birthday, looking for fun things 2 do... Hookah bar with drinks 30 and up events Rap, hip hop and rb Neol soul. Help please
Las perlas for latin
A friend and I are visiting LA. I'm struggling to find things to do at night that are interesting and have a sexy esthetic.
We're 38 and not opposed to clubs but also not wanting to hang with the 21 and under crowd.
Any suggestions?
I'm thinking things like older night clubs, bars with a jazz/speak easy kind of vibe, resturants that are genuinely good and may have entertainment or artsy flair, burlesque, typically solid comedy clubs.
We'll be staying near Hollywood bowl.
"the strip club you could take your mom to"
I went with friends and it was hilarious and a lot of fun!
It’s a cabaret!
The Baked Potato is a nice live jazz/ diner spot.
The Wolves in DTLA is imo the most beautiful bar in the city and definitely has a cozy / sexy vibe along with incredible cocktails.
Second this. Great cocktails and I felt like I was transported to Paris
And haunted apparently. Staff have some good stories if you go when not busy.
lol my best friend is the bar lead there, I believe it’s haunted, we did a photo shoot for our music collective there, love the architecture of that place!
the bar at the Dresden
What’s the scene been like post-Marty and Elayne? I moved away from the neighborhood in 2021 and haven’t been back to the Dresden yet
Tramp Stamp Granny’s piano bar
Been wanting to check this place out
What a horrible name for a bar. Wow
I'm going to be in Los Angeles for a few days in late May. I found a few threads on this topic but most were pretty old. I know places come and go, and especially pre-pandemic lists are pretty useless at this point. For those of you who live in/around LA, or visited recently, where do you recommend right now?
If it matters I'll be staying around Silver Lake, and will be going to an event at the Hollywood Bowl one night. But the rest of the trip is pretty open, and we'll have a rental car. What are your favorite cocktail bars lately? Where are the classics I shouldn't miss?
Tiki Ti is about as historic as it gets and they make great drinks.
Also, grabbing lunch and a drink Alcove/The Big bar is great.
Outside of that, my buddy and I typically just walk through Silver lake / echo Park and pop into whichever spot looks good. Honestly, the level of quality out there is pretty high and there are plenty of bars.
Personally, I've liked Lowboy and Bar Flores.
I'd caution against jackalope (speakeasy in seven grand). Was very nice but very expensive and (at least when we went) very empty.
This is really helpful, thank you!
Not quite in your area, but my favorite cocktail bar is Accomplice (attached to Little Fatty) in Mar Vista. Really playful and unique cocktail program.
If you’re near WeHo at any point, I like Bar Next Door for a more classic menu with a twist.
I echo everyone saying Thunderbolt, and the people behind Thunderbolt have recently opened a bar in Studio City that I haven’t been able to try yet — Night on Earth. No idea if it lives up to the hype, but I’m very intrigued by the menu.
Thank you!
Not silverlake specific but: 1886, here’s looking at you, everson Royce bar, capri, normandie club… if you’re going to the Hollywood bowl go have a martini at Musso and Frank.
Thank you!
It's very 1950s touristy, but you have to get one drink at Hop Louie's in Chinatown. ("The Pagoda"). Their Scorpion Bowl ain't bad. Just stick to one. Food's just average Americanized generic.
Hop Louie’s closed awhile back. I miss it so much, especially during the Chinese New Year when they’d actually open the bar in the basement. Chinatown is great though. General Lee’s, Melody Bar if you want some lofi vinyl spinning. Oh, and Little Jewel of New Orleans just opened their bar recently. Evangeline Swamp Room. First place I’ve gotten a proper Ramos Gin Fizz in LA.
Great suggestions, thank you!
In the Silverlake area El Condor is my favorite especially cause of their food, along with Tiki Ti. Jay’s Bar is a hole in the wall, but their cocktails are great as are their bar bites. A little to the south is Thunderbolt, one of the few bars to make top 50 bar lists in LA. The other is Mírate, a little north of Silverlake. It’s a restaurant, but the atmosphere and drinks are fantastic.
Since you’re heading to Hollywood, Good Time’s At Davy Wayne’s is probably my favorite. Cocktails are good, but it’s worth going to for the setting alone. Don’t look anything else up, go in blind. Black Rabbit Rose is from the same ownership group, fun little bar that has jazz shows in the back annd magicians doing sleight of hand in front, and the drinks are a little better. Right by the Bowl is my favorite dive - Powerhouse. You won’t get a cocktail worth writing home about, but it’s an institution.
If you’re heading downtown, Wolf & Crane Bar is amazing, especially if you’re into Japanese whiskey. Clifton’s reopened recently, but can be a pain to get into. Top story is also a tiki bar. Everson Royce bar is also a classic and worth it if you’re in Arts District. I’d suggest grabbing a bite at Guerilla Tacos and your first drink there (though it might be temporarily closed?), then heading over. Apotheke has a spot in LA. Drinks are pricy, but pretty unique. Pound for pound, best cocktails imo are at The Wolves. Plus the art deco interior is beautiful. If you want a downtown rooftop, Perch is probably my favorite, but not necessarily worth going out of your way for.
A little out of your way, but if you find yourself in the Valley (North Hollywood area in particular) Idle Hour is one of the last surviving Programmatic Architecture from when LA had car destination back in the 20s and 30s. It’s shaped like a huge barrel, and their drinks and food are solid. Tiki No is a block away, but if you’re willing to go further out of your way Tonga Hut is the second oldest continuously running tiki bar in LA, also worth the stop.
This is so helpful, thank you! Thunderbolt and Mirate were already on my radar, especially since they're so close to where we're staying.
Guerilla is permanently closed :(
My boyfriend and I are partaking in dry January and we’re trying to find things to do that don’t involve drinking or just sitting down to eat. Looking more for nighttime festivities. Any ideas?
Go to a museum like LACMA or the Academy Museum. Book a whale watching tour in Long Beach or stargaze out in the desert.
wait, where in the desert?
Anza Borrego.
Stay Zero Proof Cocktail lounge.
This looks really cool! I'll have to check it out asap
Arcade/Spa Night/Roller skating/Bowling
All four at once!
I guess we probably don't need to mention ice cream places.
Lmao
Walk around Little Tokyo… the observatory closes around 9:45pm… eat in Los Feliz at Il Capriccio on Vermont… movie night and sneak in burritos… at this point I wanna join too haha
Hey Guys,
Coming to LA for a few days and I was wondering if someone knows a few places to grab a drink. Me: single, Male in the low Thirties solo Straight
I have rented a car or I can also take an Uber since Company is paying for it so distance is not a problem but it would be preferable if it is in the west side or at the most Downtown. Looking for places where there is good energy and easy to spark conversations with girls around same age or older
Nights: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Don’t mind to spend little extra if the quality is good.
Something fancy, try the Bar Marmont
Something more laid back, try the Shortstop
If you want to bar hop, try Old Town Pasadena
Check out the bungalow if you’re near Santa Monica. Good vibe and saw Owen Wilson there once
That place is fun
J
DTLA rooftops like Ace or Perch
Hollywood blvd gets poppin on weekends but not sure about weeknights. Davey wayne's, Dirty laundry, etc.
Bungalow on the west side
I just moved from Miami to LA, and I’m wondering about the nightlife. I’m living in Culver City/Palms area and everything seems to shut down around midnight, very latest at like 2am. I’m sort of used to everything winding down at around 5am/6am in Miami, so what’s like the sweet spot that the bars are pretty lively? Also, any recommendations for bars/lounges/clubs that are good for dancing? Doesn’t necessarily have to be super close to my area, I’m just genuinely curious. Thanks!
Not sure what type of after hours nightlife you’re looking for, but get on the Restless Nites and Resident Advisor mailing lists for LA for after hours dance parties.
Nightlife in LA is horrendous compared to Miami, assuming you like to go to nightclubs rather than take night hikes. If you prefer the latter, though, then LA is much better than Miami.
>very latest at like 2am.
Cause the city doesn't let places sell booze after 2. You're gonna have to stock up at a Walgreens, keep the after party going in your crib.
ohh interesting, i didn’t know that. makes a lot more sense now! well not the law, necessarily, but the reason why things close relatively early haha
Welcome to LA. Now you can wake up nice and early to go to brunch (avocado toast - market price OBVIOUSLY), go for a hike on our glorious trails in the mountains, then enjoy the afternoon at the beach.
Hey bro, also a recent Miami transplant. California has insane curfew laws for bars and clubs and there's just no way around it.
From what I've been able to gather in the several weeks I've been here, is that people go out at 9 or 10 rather than 11 or 12 and usually try to find a house party after the bars close. This being Hollywood, high-end house parties in the hills are a huge part of youth culture.
best night activities in Los Angeles
Key Considerations for Night Activities in Los Angeles:
Variety of Options: LA offers a diverse range of activities, from nightlife to cultural experiences. Consider what type of experience you’re looking for—entertainment, dining, or outdoor activities.
Safety: Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Stick to well-lit streets and popular neighborhoods.
Transportation: Plan your transportation in advance. Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are widely available, but public transit can also be a good option.
Reservations: For popular restaurants or events, making reservations in advance can save you time and ensure you get a spot.
Top Night Activities:
Dining: Explore the vibrant food scene. Consider places like Bestia for Italian, Guelaguetza for Oaxacan cuisine, or Nobu for upscale dining.
Live Music: Check out venues like The Hollywood Bowl, The Greek Theatre, or smaller spots like The Troubadour for live performances.
Night Markets: Visit the Smorgasburg LA or the Grand Central Market for a variety of food options and a lively atmosphere.
Outdoor Movies: During the summer, many parks and rooftops host outdoor movie screenings. Check local listings for schedules.
Night Hikes: For a unique experience, consider a night hike at Griffith Park or Runyon Canyon. Just make sure to bring a flashlight!
Bars and Clubs: Explore nightlife in areas like West Hollywood or Downtown LA. Popular spots include The Rooftop at The Standard and The Edison for a speakeasy vibe.
Cultural Experiences: Visit the Griffith Observatory for stargazing or check out the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) for evening events.
Recommendation: If you're looking for a memorable experience, consider a night at the Griffith Observatory. It offers stunning views of the city, free public telescopes, and educational exhibits. Plus, it's a great way to enjoy the outdoors while soaking in the beauty of LA at night.
