TL;DR
Alamo Drafthouse
The Alamo Drafthouse in Downtown Los Angeles is highly recommended for a date due to its unique dining experience. It offers food and drinks delivered directly to your seat, and sometimes features themed menus based on the movie being shown [1:3],
[3:1]. This theater combines a fun atmosphere with a great cinematic experience, making it an ideal spot for a memorable date night.
Aero Theatre
Located in Santa Monica, the Aero Theatre is another excellent choice for a date. It's known for its diverse programming, including classics, indie films, and underground hits, often screened on 35mm/70mm film [1:2]. The theater has a lot of character and history, having been originally built as a late-night escape for engineers. After the movie, you can explore the charming shops and eateries along Montana Avenue.
Chinese Theatre
For those seeking an iconic and impressive audiovisual experience, the Chinese Theatre is a must-visit. Known for hosting premieres and offering a grand IMAX experience, this theater provides a "chest-thumping" sound experience that enhances blockbuster films [3:2],
[4:1]. Its historical significance and grandeur make it a standout option for a date.
Cinespia at Hollywood Forever Cemetery
Cinespia offers a unique outdoor movie experience during the summer months at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. You can bring beach chairs and enjoy watching a movie under the stars, which is a quintessential LA experience [5:1]. This setting provides a relaxed and intimate atmosphere perfect for a date night.
Additional Recommendations
Other notable mentions include the AMC Century City for mainstream films [1:4], Laemmle theaters for indie films
[1:5], and the Vista Theatre with its Egyptian theme
[4:1]. Each of these venues offers a distinct ambiance and selection of films that can cater to different tastes and preferences for a date night.
What’s the best movie theater To take a girl on for the first date? Preferably in West LA.
The Aero Theatre in Santa Monica is really cool. They have excellent programming for classics, indies and underground hits. Place has a lot of character to it, the most iconic scene in Donnie Darko was shot at that place. Was originally built 100 years ago as a late night escape for engineers building airplanes.
Most of their screenings are on 35mm/70mm film and there are a few Q&A screenings every month. Afterwards there are some cute shops on Montana Ave to walk down including a nice if not slightly overpriced taco spot across the street and a number of great froyo locations. Depending on how the date is going you can walk down to the Promenade or Pier.
A more left-field choice but absolutely worth checking out while it's still summer in LA but the Cinespia screenings in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery are all a ton of fun. It's gotten a bit too crowded, so I'd recommend coming early and packing a picnic. If you want you can walk over to the Little Caesar's Pizza beforehand to get some food and soda. These run until around Labor Day and they have a couple of Halloween themed screenings in the cemetery in October.
It's a beautiful art deco landmark that overlooks the historic Paramount backlot. Films are screened on the Douglas Fairbanks lawn so you won't be tripping over any headstones and they're projected on to a mausoleum. One of those LA things you gotta do at least once. I'd say this is better for a third or fourth date though because the location can be a bit stressful.
If she’s cool, Alamo Drafthouse in DTLA.
Alamo's cool because it's also got the downstairs shop to browse before/after a show.
Other Westside theaters that are more interesting than an Edwards:
Bonus: the Sawtelle strip has some great Japanese food, and Bleu is a dive bar with great people watching.
No one cool goes to that out of town interloper nonsense.
I was thinking that too, but not on the west side. I love the Alamo
AMC Century City for mainstream. New Beverly for cool factor.
The Village in Westwood is iconic. There’s also the Aero which is great.
RIP The National 😭
While it’s probably not anything wildly exciting as a movie theater by itself, the one at The Grove is nice, then gives you a ton of options right there if you two want to extend the date with a drink, coffee, bookstore, etc. The views from the top floor of the parking garage are actually really solid and you have pan pacific park right next door for a stroll.
There is, I don’t live up there but you can google search it
There should be some. LA as well, but to my understanding, theyre not Jolar type.
Going to be in LA for a day and looking to see The Batman! I’m someone that absolutely loves presentation, so I’m looking for recommendations that specifically cater to audiovisual experience.
?
Thanks!
I’m way late, but we ended up going with the Chinese Theater. Wow! Maybe the loudest, most chest thumping theatrical experience I’ve ever had, which was perfect for the movie.
Thank you all so much for the tips!
Bro if you’re in La for a day then you might as well go to the Chinese theater
Yeah if you want a crazy audiovisual experience, this is the answer
Thank you! I think that’s what we’ll do. Looks amazing
Alamo Drafthouse in DTLA is a super fun experience. Haven't been since Covid, but they serve food and booze to your seat and do themed menus depending on the screening.
Hey y'all,
Doing a trip down to LA. Already have on the list to check out New Beverly and Vidiots. Any other theaters to recommend that's either mentioned on the podcast or from your personal experiences? Inclusive of any other cinema/media-related attractions/events/sites/etc.
Thanks in advance to all you brutal boys (gender inclusive)
The Griffith Observatory is a pretty awesome tourist spot that's been in movies like La La Land and Rebel Without a Cause. Also just great views of the city and lots of trails. The Ennis House is near there too. Hard to get a great view of it, but worth driving by on some crazy, windy roads. It's been in Blade Runner, Rush Hour, LA Confidential, lots of stuff. Lots of good food spots in Los Feliz too, and others have mentioned the Vista and Los Feliz 3. Don't forget to go to Tarantino's coffee place at the Vista too!
Lots of other great suggestions here, but if you want to go see a big new release I like the Universal City IMAX. The seating is really steep so you get to see a movie with a huge crowd but always can see fine, and the audio and picture quality is great. They also do some re-releases - I finally got to see Tenet in theaters there.
For a non-movie theater, it's cool to stop into the Bradbury Building, an awesome old building that has been in like 100 movies (most famously, Blade Runner).
Love the Bradbury building, went as a teenager after watching (500) Days of Summer
Studio lot tour!
Second this! I’ve done the Warner Bros tour twice and it’s super fun.
Yep, I did WB this year, thinking about Paramount next time
Love The Aero theater in Santa Monica. Great location too
The Chinese theatre is cheesy, but a very impressive room and imax experience. I mean King Kong premiered there!
I also really like the Vista (Tarantino’s other theatre) it has an Egyptian theme and there’s an attached Jackie Brown themed cafe called Pam’s Coffy.
Hi! I (M22) moved to LA recently, and my girlfriend (F22) is coming to visit for a week. I already have some date ideas in mind like I wanna take her to the Saw Unofficial Musical and to Superman at the Chinese Theatre, but I’m curious if anyone has any other LA-based date ideas?
I’ve only been here a few months so I’m still finding my way around. Budget ideas greatly appreciated! 😂

Grand Central Market & Angel's Flight
Chinatown for old-school fun & have lunch at Yang Chow
More pricey but fun https://www.sixtaste.com/tours.html
Any musicals at the Pantages in Hollywood. Hilltop Park in Signal Hill/Long Beach to look out to LA. California Science Center new USC. Or anywhere in Exposition Park. I know California Science Center is free if you have are on food stamps.
Free Jazz friday nights at Lacma! You can make it a picnic and bring your own chairs. Griffith Observatory and train museum at Griffith is free and fun. You could also do a picnic there! Bike ride at Santa Monica to Venice and walk along the venice boardwalk, get sandos Get KKBQ and bowl at Shatto 39 lanes . It's a classic bowling alley and chill! Go to Panns and then hike at Kenneth Hahn Park.
Cinespia is an awesome date and a very LA experience during the summer. Bring beach chairs, sit on the grass and watch a movie at the Hollywood forever cemetary
Edit(s): edited to say that I’m EXPLICITLY looking for theaters where this energy is expected. Like when you want a Rocky horror picture or MST3K kind of vibe. These are theaters to watch things like the new final destination movie or fifty shades of gray or just movies you’re not gonna take that seriously (and that EVERYONE is talking in). I’m not gonna watch Oppenheimer or 28 Years Later at these kinds of theaters lmao
Title. Im talking like audiences yelling at the screen, ‘warning’ characters, making jokes, rowdy, etc. I’m coming from NYC and loved the Magic Johnson theater in Harlem and the Court street theater before it closed :( and I’m hoping to find something similar (here’s a free article about it that should explain what I mean https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/21/nyregion/brooklyn-court-street-regal-cinema-closes.html?unlocked_article_code=1.T08.tsry.oxOyM0EJofPy&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare )
Edit 2: Thanks everyone who gave suggestions! I totally understand this isn’t everyone’s idea of fun that’s why I’m specifically looking for theaters where this kind of thing is expected and everyone knows what they’re getting into. Def not trying to ruin the experience for everyone during quiet screenings. Appreciate the responses (even the spicier ones) and I’ll check out the recs!
Alamo Drafthouse rowdy showings!
I didn't know L.A. had an Alamo Drafthouse.
This is perfect, thank you!
Just be sure you book the right showing! They have VERY strict quiet policies normally - I’ve seen people kicked out more than once. I’ve been to their “fun” events though and it’s always blast!
hope you find the answer but…Most people tend to hate heckling that being “fun” is a very unpopular opinion. Most people want dead silence in the theater especially somewhere like LA and surrounding cities
That’s true for some theaters as movie goers. But honestly if I want to see a movie that are culturally relevant to the Black experience I tend to go to theatre that are mostly attended by Black theatre goers because it’s not uncommon for us to heckle and talk through movies. Watching movies such as What’s Love Got to Do With It at Magic Johnson theatre is a whole next level experience compared to Century City AMC.
Yeah you def wanna watch movies like that with more black people in the theater
For sure i totally get that, that’s why I’m asking about specific theaters where that kind of environment is expected. Most theaters in NYC are also quiet, and I enjoy and primarily go to those (edited to add: and I do NOT talk in them, I WANT to enjoy a movie in quiet). But I also enjoy going to theaters that are rowdier when I’m watching a movie that’s just not that serious or even kinda bad. It’s like MST3K. I also get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea which is fine lmao and I’m not trying to turn anyone’s theater into that kind of thing. I’m looking for places that are KNOWN to be rowdy and that everyone watching the movie are also participating like Rocky Horror
Seeing Sinners at the theater in Carson was WAY more fun than seeing it in Calabasas.
The closest approximate would be the Cinemark at Crenshaw. That used to be a Magic Johnson Theatre (they shot the infamous White Chicks Oscar sketch there). I would love to go to Marvel Movie premieres there because of the audience would get so into it. Been there a couple of time since the pandemic and the vibe has settled down a lot. It's right off a K line stop, so it's also super easy to get to (in addition to free parking)
Something playful that isn't too corny. Dinner can be included but I prefer when it's separate - like you're watching the show at the restaurant but can still eat/drink what you want. Anyone know of a good place? Would love a good vibe to the place - I know some of them are in hotel event rooms and stuff which isn't as fun imo. Am up for dressing in costume :)
Dinner Detective was fire. Totally different experience than anything else.
Sounds like you want Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament
I've never been! OMG i want to go.
What's favorite movie theater in Los Angeles?
I want to watch the new Superman movie when it comes out and I want to watch it at the best spot!
I still like the Century City AMC in IMAX or Dolby. The screens are large and the seats are close so it feels bigger than it is compared to other theatres. 3 hour valet parking.
Let’s not confuse non-regular movie goers with these terms. For the purpose of seeing Superman, it’s showing in IMAX and Century City’s a great IMAX to see it on
I’d recommend seeing it in IMAX at the Chinese Theatre or Universal AMC
The Chinese main standalone theater, hands down
Have you sat in those squeaky, unstable seats?!
Admittedly, I haven’t been there since the renovation
I miss the Cinerama Dome. I hope it reopens.
Next year!!!! They were fixing the hvac system a week ago. Just the dome though. There is still no tenant for the arclight.
AMC at Century City if you want a clean movie theater and don’t want to deal with tourists
All the mainstream movies are cut and mastered for LieMAX. They don’t take advantage of true IMAX. Except for those special fish in the sea movies.
I realize that movie theaters aren’t exactly popular anymore, but which one do you think is best? Where do you enjoy catching a good movie and why. Looking for recommendations.
The best: Academy Museum’s David Geffen theater. You don’t need museum tickets to see a movie and tickets are a steal for what you’re getting ($5 for students!!). 100% the most technically impressive theater in town (RRR in 4K blew my mind for the 4th time with their sound system.) Programming is great too. No concessions because they like to keep the place clean; they have every right to because it's gorgeous.
Runner-up: The Egyptian, just went to the premiere of Longlegs on Monday! Get an American Cinematheque membership.
That’s awesome i didn’t know the academy museum had a full theater. Do you have to pay museum entrance in order to watch a movie or can you watch a movie there separately??
If you have a library card with LAPL, you can also get tickets to the theater for free through their 'Discover and Go' program (along with admission to a bunch of other LA museums and even park passes!).
Different theaters for different experiences
AMC CityWalk for IMAX and Dolby mainstream releases and also the worst parking
Chinese for really gigantic screen
Egyptian / Aero / Los Feliz 3 for American Cinematheque programming
El Capitan for Disney and Fox films and also the prettiest interior and the pre show organist
New Beverly and Vista for a combo of excellent curation, the best popcorn and hot dogs and sodas in town. Really excellent for genre movies and revivals.
Vidiots for excellent revival programming
AMC Americana at Brand or AMC Century City if I’m just seeing a mainstream movie
This is the most comprehensive answer. “Best” is relative to what OP is looking for, and all of these theaters scratch a different itch for different experiences!
My favorite has always been the Chinese Theater. It's gorgeous, the screen is huge, the room is huge, and they always have classic film paraphernalia in the lobby.
Walk across the street before or after the movie and have a drink in the lobby bar at the Roosevelt hotel for an amazing Hollywood evening.
I missed the academy museum and several indie theaters in Pasadena/glendale and Gardena.
Also the whole Alamo thing - I loved them in Austin and Houston but I think we just have better options here in LA? But also I don’t want to park down near the theater either
And the Alamo Drafthouse
Alamo Draft House by far
Yes, only the old Grauman's
ArcLight Hollywood in general. That place had THE BEST special events ever. I miss the Q&As :(
Hi
I'm visiting LA soon and planning on going to see killers of the flower moon (or some other great film in a great cinema) on 24th or 26th october.
I've seen it's showing in a few cinemas and wondered what people thought of the options below.
I love cinemas with a bit of personality to them, so would rather see it in a beautiful building than see it in a huge multiplex. Have i missed off any beautiful cinemas showing it from my list below? Or should i forget 'killers...', which i can go see when i come home and go see a different film altogether in a grear cinema (i was gonna go new bev, but the double bills don't especially appeal to me)
- TCL chinese theatre
- landmark theatre sunset
- Alamo drafthouse downtown
- regency commerce
- amc the grove
- Regal Edwards Alhambra Renaissance
- IPIC theaters
Thank you!
Thank you. There’s no reason to go to this soulless, overpriced corporate cinema. The physical layout means you may be walking a lot with that $9 popcorn.
I mean, there are reasons, but all of them are variations of "it's convenient" and "location, location, location." (Which is to say, there's cool stuff nearby.)
Of these, the best "reason," IMHO, is probably that it's the theater nearest the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures which is a genuinely cool experience if one loves cinema enough. (LACMA is also adjacent to it for a killer twofer.)
But, yeah, on its own merits, that theater is decidedly unspecial.
You do realize most of the list on there is corporate theatres which basically has the same price. And you do realize they updated their seats now and are recliners.
It should be noted that it MUST be the IMAX screen, the rest of the screens are just a generic multiplex. The IMAX screen is in the old historic auditorium.
They're all close enough to walk and too close to Uber. There will be some homeless people along the way but just keep your distance and walk confidently. Have a great time! The Chinese theater is gorgeous.
Edited to add: be aware that the TCL Chinese has the one historic auditorium (I believe Screen 7?) and 6 new smaller screens. You want the main auditorium.
This makes me wish the Vista was open.
Vista is one of my favorite theaters. Happy to hear it’s reopening. Wish Good Luck Bar would reopen too.
If you're into theater systems I'd highly suggest AMC at Universal City walk. They're one of the few theaters in the world with 70mm Imax
There is no other answer. Not only is it visually stunning inside, but it is hands down the best audio experience you will hear in a theater.
My favorite ladies room in Hollywood!
I give walking tours that stretch from the Chinese to Pantages (near Capitol Records). Walking is safe although there are some unsavory sorts in some places who you will need to not linger around.
The above is probably more true if you are a guy than if you are a girl
Best theaters in LA are the Chinese, Egyptian, and El Capitan. The Chinese is the one that will be showing your film, so go there. It's spectacular, the grandest movie theater in the world and deservedly so
Make sure you are getting tickets for the grand historic screen at the Chinese. In the 80s they added more screens to make it a multiplex (the original historic screen is from 1927, but it was been very well maintain and was upgraded to imax 10-20 years ago) but the addition screens are generic and not special at all.
Tickets at the grand screen run about $5 more than normal (at least that was true last time I went), totally worth it. The lobby also has wardrobe and posters and props from classic Hollywood on display, so it's even a mini- museum in addition to a theater
best theaters in Los Angeles for a date
Here are some top theaters in Los Angeles for a date:
TCL Chinese Theatre:
The El Capitan Theatre:
The Landmark Westwood:
Alamo Drafthouse Cinema:
The Aero Theatre:
Recommendation: For a memorable experience, consider starting your date at the TCL Chinese Theatre for a movie, followed by a stroll along Hollywood Boulevard. This combination offers both entertainment and a chance to explore the vibrant atmosphere of the area.
