TL;DR
Character Selection
Many players recommend using a party consisting of Cloud, Tifa, and either Aerith or Yuffie. Cloud is often seen as the central character due to his balanced capabilities [1]. Tifa is favored for her high damage output and agility, while Aerith provides strong magic support and healing. Yuffie is a great alternative if you prefer a more aggressive playstyle with her unique abilities
[1:5].
Materia and Abilities
A key strategy is to equip your characters with the right materia combinations. Elemental materia is crucial, especially when paired with corresponding attack or defense materia (e.g., Fire + Elemental) to exploit enemy weaknesses [1:2],
[1:6]. Healing materia, such as Prayer and Chakra, are recommended as they do not consume MP
[1:4]. Additionally, mastering Synergy Skills can provide significant advantages in combat by allowing characters to perform actions without using ATB
[1:5].
Defensive Strategies
Defense is just as important as offense. Using abilities like Steadfast Block and Precision Defense can greatly enhance your survivability [1:10]. Barrier spells and items like Manawall can be used to mitigate damage from powerful attacks, especially during boss fights
[1:7]. Switching characters quickly during battle can also help avoid incoming damage, as the AI is generally good at blocking
[1:8].
Leveling and Progression
In the early stages of the game, focus on leveling up your materia and understanding each character's strengths and weaknesses. While having a well-optimized setup isn't crucial early on, it becomes more important as you progress through the game [1:9]. Utilize AP Boost materia to level up your materia faster, and don't hesitate to experiment with different setups to find what works best for your playstyle
[1:9].
By focusing on these aspects, you can create a balanced and effective party that can handle the challenges presented in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
So this is my first playthrough of Rebirth. While I am enjoying it, the combat is a bit overwhelming and frustrating at times. I am playing on Normal, but at times it feels like "Normal+". I have just finished chapter 6. I tried to fight Phoenix at the weakest form and the thing destroyed me, my party is level 25.
I use Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith. Although now that I have Yuffie I want to slot her in Aeriths spot. Played her tutorial and liked her style. I don't really care for Barret much so I don't really use him. Red is very fun too, but I gotta have Tifa in my party because she is great. I figure since Yuffie can throw her Star she should be decent enough for ariel enemies, plus she can use her ninjutsu which is like free spells.
Anyway, I still seem to be struggling so I must be building them wrong. I do have Maxed Assess that I always use with cloud. At this point of the game how should I be setting up everyone? And maybe some tips on how not to die a lot or have my party lose HP so fast.
If remeber phoenix gimmick is it summon a monster once you kill the summoned it will get pressured (3 times)
If you have fire + elemental in armor that sure helps.
Auto unique ability, stead fast block, precion defence, atb stagger , speed up, hp up, chakra for tifa
Atb assist stead fast block, precion defence, prayer for yuffie
stead fast block, precion defence, attack up, hp up, chakra, enemy skill for cloud
To be honest i didnt use equip most of these in dynamic as im prioritizing maxing all matera as early as possible.
Thanks! What is a great way to go about level materia at the part of the game I’m at right now? I only have one AP boost materia at the moment.
Balance your load outs with only the necessary then equip 1 or 2 green materia that you want to level like the revive materia. Also equip someone with a support matera like elemental or warding with your ap up (blue matera need a lot of ap)
Always equip chakra and prayer as they are very good as they dont use mp.
At normal, you should be able to bruteforce most enemies. Materia load out is not that important until the later parts. You just need the basics and fundamentals on how each character functions as all of them are different and manage their ATBs.
Remember you have 3 chracters dont get stuck with controlling just one. Think of it as turn base in real time
Barret is amazing with beginners due to Bonus Rounds, so he's a great choice if you want him to be a healer + use prayer. But anyways having multiple ice materias is great but you should really only use it when phoenix is pressured, because that's your only window of damage and easier to land. If you have elemental + fire, that'd be great for defense. Or you can elemental + ice on your weapon for better damage. Have some HP ups if needed. In lower difficulty, you don't really need a solid build for this. Just get some ice, healing materias (maybe 2), a prayer (preferably with barret), E-skill with sonic boom, and you're set
Thanks. I would also like to mention that I am looking for good set ups in general, not just with phoenix. I mainly put that as an example of my struggle. But I will definitely use this advice. I don’t believe I have any elemental materia. I also have HP up on cloud and Tifa. Weapon skill wise what would you recommend for everyone? Think I put HP +200 on Tifa. I just hate my party getting low on HP.
Good set ups will be a bit later on when you get more materia from Chad. Mostly the blues and purples, and some yellows. But for now you don't really need good set ups, just make sure you have multiple copies of materia and equip everyone. Elemental weakness is a good way to go for now (fire, ice, lightning, etc materia). Weapon skill as in the ability or the slots where you equip abilities under your materia? If talking about the slots, usually offensive is the way to go. I don't remember the names of it but usually gives +% in damage for certain things. Also I'd recommend to try to level up a good amount of purple, blue, and yellow materias that you pick up
Master using Synergy Skills - they are invaluable as they don't require ATB and some moves pull your comrades out of danger.
The offensive abilities pack a helluva punch, some abilities launch characters airborne for easy air combat, and the defensive ones make 2 characters immune to damage.
All have the ability to yoink someone away from an enemy which comes in very handy.
Yuffie and Aerith are a very powerful combination. All the players can utilize her wards, and Yuffie in particular benefits greatly from this to unleash crazy damage with spells or build ATB for her higher damage abilities.
Don't discount Aerith's Soul Drain - it does a lot of damage to HP.
The elemental abilities chain for some characters and cause tons of pressure to vulnerable enemies.
Since it's your first playthrough I'd encourage you to get used to how the different characters work with each other - they all have their roles but all work together in unique and beneficial ways.
For my 1st playthrough i always just use underleveled materia to level them up. But i think for optimal build, Elemental magic is key and dont forget to use items if you dont mind using them. Assess, see elemental weakness, use them. See elemental attack, use elemental materia on armor paired with corresponding element. First strike is great. Barrier is MVP for defensive play, to tank damage. Especially for summon's ultimate attack. The cue is coming? Manawall+magnify Time+magnify, barrier+magnify is great combo choice. And of course stat up materia. Enemy skill for sonic boom and plasma discharge. Atb boost. Atb assist for your main, use 2 atb back to back to increase ally's atb, but 1st playtrhough will be underleveled.
A lot of mechanics in the game might not be explained. Better watch youtube or tips for beginner
Asses to see how to pressure, weakness etc.
Pressured enemies -> focused strike.
Easy play is barret lifesaver + chakra. Auto unique+hp absorption is good.
Learn to block/perfect parry with red and use watchers respite is good too, but harder for newbie.
Dont forget clouds punisher mode for melee attack just block and you get counter attack. Also counter fire is cheating if enemies use ranged attack, you are immune from damage, counter attack, atb boost for 2 characters
Tifa for stagger build and increase, auto unique is good for her. Unfertered fury basic attack trick.
Aerith, make 2 wards far from each other, enemies closing in? Ward shift ti the other. Auto unique is also good to cast spell if you are not using her, she will move to her arcane ward automatically(i think)
Yuffie, elemental ninjutsu+doppelganger. Save 1 atb just in case, Use tactical menu slowing down to see if attack is about to connect -> brumal form.
Cait sith, use mog for decoy for defensive play
Also precision defense + steadfast block on anyone
When a character is about to get hit quickly switch to another.
The AI is good at blocking.
Hey all,
After completing FF7R, I was inspired to go back and replay the original for the first time since my youth. This game was one of my biggest regrets because I reached the final stage but never beat it.
Now that I'm replaying on PS4, I was hoping to get some suggestions on what my party should look like including materia, summons, and gear. I know there is some flexibility with my preferences and there may not be one "best" way to go about it. After some light research I'm leaning towards a party of Cloud, Cid, and Barret, but I'm at a loss for what materia and gear I should equip them with to make the group as strong as possible. I'm also open to suggestions on different party members.
I tried searching for an existing thread but couldn't find any. Let me know if there's one I missed!
Thank you!
Honestly, I would focus on Limit Breaks. Specifically Omnislash. That thing, when paired with Fury, will dish out pain. Obviously make sure you have proper healing/buff/debuff materia though. But for early game, just worry about staying alive. "All" is your friend. Best thing I can suggest is just try different combos and have fun.
Some combos that come to mind:
-Elemental + Any magic materia ( to gain that element in your regular attack. Good for mobs with elemental weakness.)
-Added Effect + Destruct or Odin (has the chance of causing instant death)
-Manipulate + Enemy skill: not a combination per se, but is a good team to build up your E. Skill lists. This Blue Magic can do some very powerful stuff. Also works to have 3 on one character in order to learn it on 3x materia while only getting hit once.
Man, there is just too much to list here. Just have fun and try things out.
Thank you!
I never heard of a single person reaching the end, but failing to beat Sephiroth.
It's seriously kept easy and any basic setup will do.
We're talking 20ish years ago so my memory may be off, but I think the boss I never beat was one of the Jenova forms in the North Crater. When I was 10 I didn't have the patience to really set myself up for success.
I just recently beat the game again on IOS. Didn’t really do much side questing this time through. Crushed every boss in the game for the most part and beat Sephiroth at mid-50s level. It’s pretty easy if you get Big Guard enemy skill, a few powerful magic materia (Contain, Ultima), and both Ribbon accessories. The ribbons alone make Sephiroth far less dangerous. I can tell you where to find these if you’re interested, but don’t want to ruin it for you!
I would recommend watching some stuff from 4-8 Productions on youtube. He has great videos explaining some really busted material combinations.
Thank you!
Was thinking about how SE is going to structure the FF7R party, and if it would follow the original 3-character party or mimic FFX where the full ensemble could swap in at any moment. This would also imply all characters would be featured in every cutscene, unlike the originals.
From all the different setups throughout the games, which is your favorite?
Games like X and XII. Being able to switch members in the field, even mid-battle, is really nice.
Definitely 10
mostly cos i'm really indecisive and always feel like i'm missing out not using certain characters
X being able to have everyone with you. These games are trying to tell the stories of these characters, and yet you need to pick two at a time to go with one unchanging main character? Boo.
I actually liked IV the most, 5 slots so you can experience more people which also lended itself to more people present at important moments, and it had the whole front line / back line thing and felt easier to balance out with 5 people.
It's my first time playing FFVI , I know I can grind later to get three parties ready for Kefkas Tower. But I was curious what's everyone think is a good balance for base game, like two decent attackers and an attacker/ healer and a magic user. Just to get me through story at a fairly decent pace and beat final boss when I arrive there
Gau takes a lot more work to build than anyone else. Umaro is kinda limited in what he can do. Gogo can be kinda awkward to use. But they're all still good and can complete anything.
The rest is just personal choice and about as easy to use as anyone else.
Honestly I'll likely just put those 3 in party number 3 with 2 heavy hitters and use them to just get it done
Umaro and Gogo are hidden so you'll need to find them much later
FFVI is one of the easiest Final Fantasy games. You can do pretty much whatever you want, and with a tiny bit of effort you can make your characters break the game.
Use whoever you like IMO.
Probably doesn't sound very helpful, but the game is legit easy. Just have fun with it.
That's good to hear I'm able to storm Kefkas Tower now I'm just level grinding now so I'm happy I won't have to put myself through too much hell trying to figure out who to level up
I’m at the blitzball section of the game (after the second cloister of trials to be specific), and I was wondering if there’s a certain “best team” in the game. I already know you get Auron and Rikku, but other than that pls no spoilers
If you plan to grind stuff, I am partial to Tidus, Wakka and Rikku, because some battles will be undewater and those 3 are the only ones that can battle there.

Otherwise, Yuna is always great because some of the summons are great.
Wakka, Tidus, Rikku. Wakka and Tidus are capable of dealing the most damage with their overdrives (+break damage limit), and Rikku’s Mix is the most efficient way to buff.
Until you get to postgame superbosses you'll be using everyone Except Kimarhi pretty equally. Everyone has their particular type of foe theyre good against and the game is good ahout throwing all types of enemies at you throughout the game.
Now once you reach post game "time to max stats" it'll boil down to who has the best Overdrives since otherwise you'll be spamming the same 2 or 3 abilities. Also shout out for Rikku Wakka and Tidus for being the only units who can fight underwater.
>Except Kimarhi
On Standard Grid, Kimahri as a Utility White Mage with early Holy is best, especially with +20% magic halberd when leaving djose temple. You can also customize it with Remiem chocobo winnings for 1MP.
Lots of players also skip Lulu earlier than they should and just use Yuna with black magic. While she's not as good as the post game 3 Tidus Wakka Rikku, she can do well using the Booster Cactuar from Wantz on Gagazat and customizing 1MP on it.
After beating seymour at Gagazet for lv4 keys, Return Sphere with Kimari and unlock Ultima, use BM Spheres to teach it to Lulu and Yuna. Use special spheres to give Dualcast to Yuna and Kimahri, and now all 3 can be Doublecasting Ultima into the endgame.
So advanced sphere grid abuse using extensive knowledge of the game a newbie isn't gonna have? Did you miss the part where OP said he just reached Luca and hadn't played before?
The underwater battle thing is always mentioned as a boon for those 3, but aside from very short underwater sequences in the main story isn’t the only other underwater fight against >!Geosgaeno!<? Or are there underwater superbosses I don’t know about lol
>!one of the Arena's Original Creations is an underwater Evrae fight!<
Hey everyone! I want to preface this by saying I didn't have a hard time with remake at all. But for some reason I am dying A LOT in Rebirth.
I suspect it has something to do with my party builds, as I am not particularly good with that. Can anyone recommend me specific materia/weapons/accessories for the characters? I generally like to keep Barret & Aerith in my party when optional.
Edit: Holy shit guys! Thanks for all the tips. You guys are awesome. I will start using these and hopefully will not be stumbling so hard during my playthrough!
Tifa + Starshower ability destroys everything, same with Cloud + Firebolt, also consider adding Str Up, and Elemental to Cloud and Tifa. And if all else fails go to options and system and change the difficulty.
I had the opposite problem found the game didn't offer much of a challenge except for the Odin summon which despite completing every sidequest and was past lvl 60 could not beat after 30 or 40 tries.
Get multiple copies of the same meteria (specificly stuff like fire, ice, lightning, wind, and healing)
Pair these multiple copies with blue materia like hp and mp absorb. That way, whenever you attack using magic, you both heal your character and refund some mp at the same time. You can also use a magnify materia at the same time so you can take out large groups quickly. Use first strike and atb boost materia to speed this up.
Healing materia paired with magnify and magic focus materia at the same time is more effective than prayer materia, it heals more and only costs one atb bar rather than prayer materials two. Aerith can use soul drain to regain the mp she loses using healing materia (the only downside since prayer doesn't cost mp). Putting a healing carcanet on Barret with the prayer materia is a decent alternative.
Master elemental blue materia as soon as possible and always use assess on new enemies, while it's useful in the weapon slot it's even better on armor, several enemies in the game become nearly unable to damage you at all, if you max out elemental it will even heal you, lots of enemies do elemental attacks, these attacks can be viewed after using assess so you can plan accordingly.
Once you obtain Yuffie and Aerith has the skill atb ward, you can do the best strategy in the game. Equip yuffie with the speed Demon key chain (you get it for beating Roche at Junon with all your soldiers still alive), then while in battle use a time materia to apply haste to Yuffie and have Aerith place an atb ward down underneath Yuffie. When Yuffie uses brumal form with this setup and standing on the ward, it won't consume any atb, you can use it infinitely so long as Haste is active and while she uses it on the ward it will also charge your allies atb Guage, you can instantly use skills that would normally cost two atb charges repeatedly.
Good shit! Thank you for the tips!!
Learned these doing hard mode, they will get you through the difficult content
To give you another tip (albeit, pretty specific), don't sleep on Cloud's counterfire synergy ability, it basically automatically perfect parrys any ranged projectile attack, though you do have to somewhat time it. You can generally tell which enemy attacks are counterfire-able if Cloud gets hit by that attack while in Punisher mode and he doesn't retaliate. I say this because for some reason there are some exceptions, like you can't counterfire Odin's ranged spear attacks, but then you can counterfire a Jabberwock's stomp attack. Elemental spells are counterfire-able as well, so if you see an enemy casting Fire/Blizzard/Thunder/Wind at you, you'll know what do.
A little more advanced tip with Barett, when he reloads after doing his base attack, you can press the overcharge button (whatever it is for your input device), so that he reloads his base attack while also gaining some overcharge.
An even more advanced/niche tip with Cloud, he can actually 'dodge faster' if you go into punisher mode right before dodging. There is some timing to this, but you can get used to it quickly if you manage to figure the rhythm out
If you’re doing side content fully you’ll be overleveled on normal difficulty in my experience.
Also prayer materia and first strike materia. Same as remake.
I got through the entire game and most of hard mode without ever using attack magic, synergy skills or punisher mode. So that shouldn’t really be your restriction. I find synergy skills garbage. There’s no time stop so very difficult to implement. You can ignore them, I only used them at the very end of hard mode to boost the relationship with cloud.
Also the enemy skill materia in this game is really good. Sonic boom and plasma discharge you should use all the time with melee attackers.
You’re gonna want to make each character a different class so to speak. Aerith for me is the person that buffs everyone else whether that’s with using magnify+barrier or magnify+haste or magnify+anything really.
I know that Barret, Cid and Yuffie are the best Party members (Aside from Cloud), but I don't know who to pair with Cloud
Cid is great, but Barret and Yuffie are simply even better thanks to having the two best ultimate weapons, their best limit breaks (18 and 15 hits respectively) being level 3 and thus faster to charge up, and being long-range characters on top of all that.
EDIT: Basically the FFVII tier list, mechanics-wise, is:
* You can maybe argue Tifa in mid-tier simply because she is very strong for the first 2/3 of the game (and God Tier if you're talking speedruns). But once everyone else gets their ultimate weapons and catches up to her in dealing 9999 every hit, she falls off fast and hard, as her ultimate weapon is the worst in the game and her limit break is only 7 hits and a level 4, at that.
** Yes, I know Cait Sith can break the game if you learn to manipulate slots. Most players don't though, and truth be told it's kinda tedious to do it and takes all the fun away from it.
Most Level 4 limits have higher damage modifiers than their level 3 counterparts, causing them to effectively cancel out the faster level 3 charge. You can Source Farm to counteract the damage modifier advantage, but the more you do the less you'll actually use limit breaks at all. Also damage overflow makes Barret and Vincent the best 2nd and 3rd characters by a wide margin. Hard to argue against being able to one-shot all the final bosses with two different characters.
Interestingly, if you max out everything then Cloud becomes the #5 best choice behind Vincent, Barret, Yuffie, and Cid.
>Most Level 4 limits have higher damage modifiers than their level 3 counterparts, causing them to effectively cancel out the faster level 3 charge.
Which only matters at very low or nonexistent levels of endgame optimization.
>You can Source Farm to counteract the damage modifier advantage, but the more you do the less you'll actually use limit breaks at all.
Um, no? Why would you use limit breaks any less in this case?
>Also damage overflow makes Barret and Vincent the best 2nd and 3rd characters by a wide margin. Hard to argue against being able to one-shot all the final bosses with two different characters
Getting damage overflow takes so much grinding far beyond even typical source farming and materia maxing that it shouldn't even factor in the rankings. It's in an even more extreme category of "breaks the game but impractical for most players" than Cait Sith Slot manipulation is.
Omnislash makes cloud top tier, buddy.
Omnislash = 15 hits, level 4
Highwind = 18 hits, level 4
Doom of the Living = 15 hits, level 3 (charges up faster)
Ungarmax = 18 hits, level 3
Cid, Yuffie, and Barret, in one way or another (or both ways in Barret's case) have superior limit breaks to Omnislash.
Cloud's ultimate weapon is also worse than those other three characters, since it requires his HP always at max to deal the top damage. Cid's requires max MP, which is easy to control, just don't cast magic. Yuffie's literally just gets better the higher level the enemy is. And Barret's just requires loading it with a bunch of maxed-out high-AP materia.
Why isn’t Vincent here?
Vincent is the one of the worst characters
Damage overflow + mug glitch make Vincent the strongest character in the entire Final Fantasy series.
Cloud, Vivi, Auron.
Who did you name the other 2
I used Vincent and Red simply because they’re more badass
I use Cloud, Cait and Vincent but i usually change Cait with Yuffie
Anybody playing the JP version that can help me build a good PvE team?
I’m currently using the higher ones in PvE, around 19k power But still struggling with Sephiroth and Cloud 18k level.
I’m not spending money on it btw. So pure luck muscle you could say.
Your account is new so I recommend joining the discord and asking for help there, there’s a lot to cover. https://discord.gg/qyqd42cH
But overall, you should focus on clearing easy content first for gems which you can use on the current banners. Those units have battle roads which can freely give you exp up to level 140.
There’s also a temple banner for 30k gems and the temple units are very useful for general PvE as well as temple mode which you can get to later.
Once you have levelled up some more you want to focus on blossom doors which will give you materials for talent blossoms. You can get a free Estark from the beginner missions and his blossom is one of the best ones for PvE.
Thank you 🙏
Btw Estark is …. Which one exactly?
I have a few different accounts that I don't need and they have a lot of resources and highly ranked units. You can have for free if you're interested
farm the final fantasy units, they wont come back
I guess this also applies to final fantasy origins, but the FF I tag was more applicable I thought. But just lmk what party you guys like to use for the original and why. I'm a Fighter and one of each mage kind of person because I have one person to throw out massive physical damage, one person to keep my party alive and cast white magic spells, one person to eat through mobs, and one guy who can do all 3.
4 fighter or 1 white mage
Fighter, Thief, Red Mage, White Mage
Fighter, black belt, black mage, white mage.
My current playthrough on my phone is thief thief thief thief.
2 Black Belts, a red mage and a white mage. The 2 punch boys keep things cheap and while being glass cannons the two mages can keep them hearty and healthy.
Of course this is definitely not my strongest or most efficient party set up but definitely the most fun to use from an aesthetically speaking visually pleasing point of view 🤓. My consolation is now that I have Cloud's AC Gear he now has the Reprieve ability alongside Sephiroth and Vincent so I can withstand powerful party ending attacks atleast ONCE. But recovering is another challenge because of no primary healer.
Edit: adding text.
I see your pretty boys and raise you mine with a minor adjustment. For some reason, Vincents Holiday Garm gear is dangerous 😂
Damn your power levels way ahead of mine wasn't playing when that Vincent outfit came out but it looks helluva gorgeous didn't want to sacrifice another 27000+ crystals for Sephiroth outfit after getting Cloud's but I'm reconsidering looks really nice.
To be honest, haven't played during that time either, I started a few months ago and haven't come across a single Vincent banner. I have a few of his outfits only from gear vouchers. For the current banner...I sacrificed everything I had to complete the banner twice for the outfits. Other than that, my power level is pretty ass on other characters, I'm just a massive Vincent fangirl and bringing up Sephiroth's is free (Cloud is collateral lol)
sent the boys to the beach a while ago
i miss the pre memoria menu :((
Wow this so cool surprised how you snuck Red in there 🤓
thanks! i have been using him as a healer a lot, lately! couldn't resist pulling for that pirate outfit u v u
Yep! Red is the captain of the ship
Oh my god, I love pirate Nanaki!! Now I'm regretting not pulling from that banner haha
Is the Aerith chocobo suit a good costume ?
I like how Cloud is looking up in this costume!
Damn Lucia looks really hawt in that outfit 😍 Tifa too I need to start farming more costumes for the ladies of the game 🤓
Ngl, I farm the ladies costumes, I even struggle with the hard stuff at times but I main these three gals everyday, everywhere. This setup gives major Easter vibes for me and I love it, but Aerith is my big hitter for the most part. I still got to figure out what she lacks in but I’m fairly new to actually setting up the gals with equipment without using auto setup. I want more lore of Lucia tbh, she’s an absolute beauty, and can’t wait for them to add her to the mainline games. I’m closed to a day one player but not exactly. Work has me tied up and broke my phone with a jackhammer so couldn’t play it
