High-End and Designer Stores
For those looking for high-end dress shoes, several stores offer designer options that are worth visiting. The Armoury and Leffot are recommended for their quality and craftsmanship [2:1]. Additionally, Ralph Lauren's flagship men's store, Burberry, Hermès, JM Weston, Paul Stuart, and Brooks Brothers provide luxury shoe options with a variety of styles
[2:3].
Value for Money
If you're looking for good value without compromising on quality, Meermin is highly recommended for offering great dress shoes at a reasonable price [3:4]. Allen Edmonds is also suggested, especially during sales, as they provide durable and stylish options under $300
[3:2],
[3:3].
Department Stores and Discount Outlets
Department stores like Nordstrom Men’s Shop near Columbus Circle offer a wide range of dress shoes [2:2]. Saks Off 5th and Century 21 in downtown Brooklyn are noted for having good deals on shoes
[2:1]. DSW is another option for finding dress shoes within budget
[3:1].
Boutique and Unique NYC Stores
For unique and boutique shopping experiences, consider visiting No Man Walks Alone and Rothmans NY [2:1]. These stores offer curated selections that might appeal to someone looking for something distinctively New York or inspired by Mr. Porter.
Additional Recommendations
For those seeking more affordable options, Suit Supply, Bonobos, and Uniqlo have been mentioned for their reasonably priced dress shoes [2:4]. For belts and other accessories, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Nordstrom Rack can be good places to find complementary items for your dress shoes
[2:4].
I will be visiting NY for a week with my wife, and I would like to visit a good store with lots of options of sneakers for training. Recommendations in Manhattan will be appreciated as I’ll be staying around Time Square.
Thanksss
Hoka on 22 & 5th
New Balance on 20 & 5th
Paragon Union Sq
Fleet Feet on 14
Foot Locker on 14
Adidas and Nike in Soho
Brooklyn Running on Grand in Williamsburg
Asics store in Meatpacking
REI has a reasonable shoe selection, albeit a bit more orientated to trails and hiking.
Macy’s.
Training for what? If you are looking for running shoes there are plenty of dedicated running shoe stores.
I practice boxing! So I need something like "the opposite" for running because balance is better than absorbing the running impact.
I never considered that! How did you get into boxing?
Paragon Sports near Union Square
could you make some recommendations? thank you
Nordstrom Men’s Shop near Columbus circle
thanks
I never heard of Mr. Porter before reading your post so I don't know who it would have inspired. From the website, it appears to be at a certain price point.
I'd suggest:
Ralph Lauren's flagship men's store at 72nd and Madison;
Burberry
Hermès
JM Weston
Paul Stuart
Brooks Brothers, the main store at 346 Madison Avenue.
cheaper options or boutique store recommendations are welcome too! if you or anybody else knows, please recommend them
thank you!
Another in that general area is Turnbull & Asser
Expensive, but I’d check:
https://www.meermin.es/in_en/us-returns
Have had some good luck with shoes at Saks Off 5th and Century 21(downtown Brooklyn, not as much UWS)
Haven’t been, but walking by https://www.rothmansny.com/ caught my eye
Might be worth checking out https://huckberry.com/nyc
thank you so much for this list
For things not as expensive, but not quite just NYC, I like Suit Supply, Bonobos, and Uniqlo.
Honestly most of my belts are from TJ Maxx/Marshalls/Nordstrom Rack/Costco for dress and Gap/Banana Republic/Lands End for casual. Have one belt from Allen Edmonds to go with a pair of shoes I have had. Have heard good things about https://www.equusleather.co.uk/belts/bridle-leather-belts.html but have not ordered one yet.
Might want to check

If you prefer expensive clothing I recommend the stores Marshalls and Dr Jays. For a more average budget go to Xios or City Jeans.
I recommend Stone Island, CCP, Martine Rose, Undercover, Acne Studio, APC,
thanks
Looking to spend less than $300… any ideas I seen Meerin looks like a possible option? TIA
Alden if you want the best, Allen Edmonds is currently having a summer sale so you can get a great pair for less than 300.
Allen Edmonds is great, if it'll fit under his budget. I love my pairs, and they last a very long time.
Meermin is the best value for the money. I own several pairs.
DSW among others that may be in your preferred area are recommended by Where to buy Men’s Dress Shoes from 3 months ago.
Looking for a place that will resole dress shoes. Balance of price and quality of service would be a plus. Also would be a plus if they would be able to put a rubber sole on instead of typical dress shoe sole. Know anyone?
I always get the rubber bottoms on my new shoes. So much better. My guy is a craftsman. They look like they came that way. Work of art.
John's Shoe Repair 30 Irving Place
I keep going there no matter where I live. Worth the trip.
He also does dog leashes in case anyone needs a fix. Loves dogs
Awesome! Just what I was looking for. Thank you!
You're very welcome. He's a real old school cobbler. Seems kind of gruff, but it's a facade. He's fixed shoes that I thought were unfixable. I'm sure yours will be great. Ask him to show you the soles he'll use. If you don't like them, ask to see more. I put doc marten type soles on dress shoes. Not his first choice, but he did it.
If they're expensive or one of a kind, Leather Spa. Multiple locations.
I've never had a problem with a generic, neighborhood cobbler. If these are really expensive shoes I'll defer to others, but if you're just trying to get your average joe Allen Edmonds resoled, any cobbler should be able to handle that.
You can also ask about toe taps if you need to add some extra layers to specific areas of a worn-down sole.
Jim’s on E. 59th
Another vote for Jim's. Excellent work.
Luxury shoe repair place needed asap! from 5 days ago recommends Leather Spa and Vince's Village Cobbler among others.
Hi all, I’ve been struggling to find a shoe I’m genuinely happy with. Are there any running stores that stand out compared to others in their knowledge and expertise to help with a proper fit? NYC obviously
Super Runners Shop! I love the Midtown East location
Agreed.. plus they also do the 3D foot scan thing that Fleet Feet does, and I love that they recommend 2-3 options and different brands.
everyone might say Fleet Feet but my experience at the Brooklyn store kinda soured them for me.
I love Brooklyn Running Co off Atlantic Ave
I went to Brooklyn Running Co after hearing so much hype, and honestly I was not impressed. The experience was no better than any other running store. They just watched me take a few steps, told me I overpronate, and recommended Brooks Adrenaline. I've actually had better experiences at Fleet Feet.
funny enough thats my experience at Fleet Feet, lol.
They don’t have a very good selection though
agree but in times past they werent afraid to recommend something the store doesnt carry rather than force a product they do carry that might not work for what i need. that holds weight for me personally
I feel the staff at Fleet Feet in Columbus Circle are fantastic (all seriously runners who have put in miles in a variety of shoes), but never have my sizes in stock (M8-8.5)
I feel like everyone says Brooklyn running co… and I wish I could recommend them personally but I feel like they are always just trying to sell me the shoes they struggle to sell when I go there (as if they’re trying to clear stock)
This isn't the answer you're looking for but you're likely best going to a physical therapist who specializes in runners (Finish Line, MotivNY etc.) They can look at you run, see how you strike and recommend shoes that would be best for you. I've been to several Fleet Feets and Brooklyn Running Co and find that the guidance there is a hit or miss. Everyone seems very nice at both and I purchase items from both stores but not everyone knows what they're talking about and it can be tough to know what's correct/incorrect.
Fleet feet 72nd & Amsterdam
UWS location is the best, UES around 60th is also great!
I need a pair of loafers resoled. Any good quality/prices on or near Broadway above 96th Street?
My wife swears by New Paul’s, Broadway between 111-112. She just had a tricky resoling done there, turned out great.
Right in my neighborhood. Thanks!
Trying to support local and avoid men’s warehouse/dsw/shoe dept to find dress shoes for my suit. Any recommendations? A plus if they sell other leather goods like belts.
Not local, but very much a good US company that makes high quality stuff is Allen Edmonds. Not sure if there are good local places tbh, sorry.
I don't understand why people are quick to say that Rochester is a desert in many categories. These came up in a quick Google search: -Vittorio Menswear & Tuxedo -Jack Green Men's Shop -C. Anthony Men's Shop -Adrian Jules Custom Clothing
You’re not gonna find anything brick and mortar that carries anything worth a damn, but if interested supporting somewhat local, I would recommend Parkhurst shoes. They are still manufactured in Buffalo and our high-quality stitched sole construction, full grain leather shoes, which can be resoled at a local shoe repair shop when they wear out after several years. They roughly compete with a brand like Alan Edmonds I know is sold at. Von mauer.
Maybe my biggest grievance about NYC. This used to be a shopping mecca. People would visit just to get stuff you couldn't find anywhere else. What was fashionable in Seattle in 2005 was what was fashionable in NYC in 2000. Now everyone is in a basic bitch grub regardless of location.
There were small clothing stores littering lower Manhattan. W 8th street was where you got dress shoes (dozens of stores on couple of blocks). Broadway in Soho for sneakers. Williamsburg for vintage and limited run lines. All of these stores were fully independent. All long gone. Now you have same chains you can find in San Antonio.
Even Century 21 folded. It's a shite state of affairs and you can tell. New Yorkers dress like shit now. You can't even tell who's a tourist anymore! ^we ^all ^are
I live in Queens and I swear there are no good thrift shops around here. I've made a list of a few I want to visit, but from reviews online they sound either overly expensive or poor quality. All the good thrift shops are in the city.
Buffalo exchange in Queens is a good one. I went there to sell some clothes, got some credit back and new clothes :)
The landscape of retail has changed due to internet shopping. The locations you listed seem to be off for the wares though.
The best dress shoe stores left in city that are independent are probably the Armoury and Leffot. I’m not sure what specific stores you were referring to but even the brand owned stores for good dress shoes (Lobb, Carmina, etc) are not on W8.
Sneaker has definitely changed due to a lot more DTC from Nike and raffles that get backdoored versus lineups from back in the day.
Williamsburg has not been good for vintage at all tbh. In recent memory, Wooden Sleepers and Crowley Vintage are probably the best vintage stores in the city. One was formerly in Red Hook and the other was in Gowanus and now in DUMBO.
> The landscape of retail has changed due to internet shopping.
Just one aspect. NYC was always fashion capital of the world, which allowed for a lot of small scale spinoffs. A cottage industry of sorts. Opening a small store and running skus in 100s was financially feasible. My entire wardrobe was comprised of one offs.
Yes online happened, but few other things happened as well. Leasing a storefront became a pipe dream, but most importantly: price deflation in fashion industry. 20 years ago Levis were $50-80. And they are still exact same price. This is true for clothing in general. It's super cheap and reserved only to clothing that can be reproduced in hundreds of thousands. Even damn Brooklyn Industries or American Apparel couldn't compete on scale.
btw Williamsburg was fantastic for clothing vintage or not, but I am talking about time period 15-20 years ago really.
90% of what I own is from TJ Maxx or the clearance section of a high end department store.
Nice!! I bet it’s worth wild than other stores
I remember we used to make fun of eurotrash stylings from Dieter from Frankfurt ja. Now eurotrash you find on Brooklyn bridge are the sharpest dressed in town. gah!
I also forgot all the bohemian shit options you could find in East Village. Even the smelly hippies and gutterpunks are in Uniqlo uniforms now.
The Chelsea Goodwill (25th west of 6th, but double check that), DSW, Target, Target
Need a nice pair of dress shoes (sized 13 or 14 depending on fit). Went to Maceys and they didn’t have my size. Going to try Nordstrom but wondering if there was another store I should try. Cheers
DSW, I think there’s one in Pasadena
It's expensive but allen edmonds is having their anniversary sale right now https://www.allenedmonds.com/
They are 100% worth it if you wear dress shoes often. They are actually comfortable and they can take a beating.
IMO, since you have big feet, youll benefit a lot by going to the store and getting your correct measurements in length and width. I have horrible feet, always thought dress shoes were the worst until I got properly fitted to a nice pair of quality dress shoes.
Nordstrom's Rack has larger sizes!
Glendale Galleria, tons of options
men's wearhouse in the mall.
Rego Park in Queens had a good variety a few days ago
I went to 3 recently, on 25th, 100th, and 23rd. None had anything good.
I had found some jerseys at union square, but you need luck. Bad thing its full of people, good thing is because there are lot people they add stuffs all the time
