What Redditors are Saying

Best Shields in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

TL;DR

  • Erdtree Great Shield: Reflects spells, 100% physical resistance [1:1], [3:2]
  • Fingerprint Shield: High defense, impenetrable [3:4], [4:2]
  • Golden Greatshield: Easy to obtain, solid defense [1:2], [4:2]
  • Brass Shield: Low requirements, versatile [1:3], [3:1]

Shield Types and Their Uses

The choice of shield in Elden Ring largely depends on your playstyle and build. Heavier shields like the Fingerprint Shield offer excellent defense and are ideal for blocking physical attacks due to their high guard boost, which minimizes stamina loss when blocking [1:5], [4:2]. Medium shields such as the Brass Shield are recommended for lower-level players or those who prefer a balance between defense and mobility [1:3], [3:1].

Special Abilities and Ashes of War

Certain shields come with unique abilities that can be advantageous in combat. The Erdtree Great Shield has a skill that reflects spells back at enemies, making it particularly useful against magic users [1:1], [3:2]. Adding ashes of war like Barricade Shield can further enhance a shield's defensive capabilities [1:2]. The "no skill" ash allows players to use their weapon's ash without needing to two-hand it, providing versatility in combat [3:1], [3:3].

Build Considerations

The best shield for you will depend on your specific build and the types of enemies you face. For example, the Golden Greatshield is noted for its balanced defense against both physical and magical damage [4:2], while the Jellyfish Shield can boost magic damage [4:3]. Players seeking to maximize their parrying ability might opt for a buckler with Carian Retaliation [3:5].

Availability and Accessibility

Some shields are easier to obtain than others. The Golden Greatshield is praised for being relatively easy to acquire [1:2]. However, rare shields like the Eclipse Greatshield may require farming from specific enemies due to their low drop rates [1:4]. It's also important to consider the wielding requirements and whether your character can handle the weight and strength needed for heavier shields.

In summary, selecting the right shield involves balancing your build needs, playstyle preferences, and the specific challenges posed by the game's enemies.

Which one is best? And does size of the shield matter?

Golden greatshield is pretty solid given how easy it is to drop (I suggest adding the barricade shield ash of war to it). If your goal is parrying though I recommend adding carian retaliation or golden parry to a medium shield, so you aren’t sacrificing the ability to block

Brass shield works great at lower levels since you probably wouldn't have the equip load for a greatshield.

If you do then the Eclipse Greatshield is a great choice too.

The Eclipse Shield is really good. It drops at about 3-4% from Mausoleum Knights though, so it’s hard to get

Fingerprint for blocking, brass if you want to "use a shield" without actually blocking much and jellyfish to pad your damage numbers for youtube.

Whats fundamentally the different between brass and fingerprint shield? I see they both have 100 negation, so what does fingerprint have over the brass shield?

1 upvotes on reddit

funkyfritter · 3 years ago

Guard boost, which determines how much stamina you lose when you block. Try to block stuff like a big boss hit with the brass shield and you'll find yourself in a bad spot.

1 upvotes on reddit
weenihut · 3 years ago

Heavier shields, which require strength, provide better protection when considering all types of damage and require less stamina to block, AKA: guard boost.

In my opinion, you got two "best shields".

The "Erdtree Great Shield", offers a counter to incantations and sourceries. The counter matches the range of the attack so if they shoot from afar it will shoot just as far back at the attacker. This shield provides 100 percent resistance to physical damage.

The "Bronze shield" because it has the one lowest wielding requirements considering 100 percent physical damage blocked and the highest guard boost that isn't a Great Shield. Any non-strength build can easily wield this.

A notable mention is the "Buckler" it has the most amount of frames to parry an incoming attack. You cannot parry huge opponent's attacks but as a reference you can against Morgott and Margit.

I had beaten this game with plenty of builds but had never touched a bulky big shield ones. Since the shields don't allow you to attack while covered like elden ring.

The runes give them different effects too, so I don't know which one is the best.

I used the boar shield with longsword in a str/radiance build. It works great against fast attackint enemies and also great for parrying. Skinstealer went super easy once i switched to shields.

I use shield of whisper strength build, pretty much blocking everything, its actually good because the shield is up very quickly if use it after attacking, makes it very easy to trigger perfect block, it's kinda like sekiro

I use the heavy memento with the no weight requirement rune and health regen on shield. Light reaper sword with heal on attack/kill and you basically having constant health regen. Very useful for withered health runs. You use basically no armor with the princess sting for more damage with less equip load and you can really dish out the damage

I used a medium shield then moved to Greatshield during my first play through. It added some nice defense while I was learning the game and bosses. I will say I enjoy using greatshields in Elden Ring a lot more than Lords of the Fallen. The rune aspect is really cool though and can add some great benefits!

Best Shield Defensive stats

Posted by mephisto9466 · in r/Eldenring · 2 years ago

Hello everyone. Below I've posted my findings for the different shields in the game. I'm listing the best shields in the different defensive categories such as guard boost, magic negation, fire negation, holy negation, and lightning negation. I'm not listing physical because there are way too many shields that block 100% physical. I'll Also break them up into Small, Medium, and Large shields. Keep in mind all shields have the barricade ash of war and are maxed out at +25. Also keep in mind that for guard boost you get the highest out of standard affinity for all the shields. Heavy, keen, and quality reduce your guard boost.

Small Shields:

Side note, none of the small shields have 100% physical damage negation, the best one for that is the Iron round shield at 80%

Best guard boost:

The highest guard boost for the small shields is 54 and that is shared with the below small shields.

Smoldering shield, Ice Crest Shield, iron round shield, and guilded iron round shield

Best magic resist:

The undisputed champion for best magic resistance for small shields is the Ice crest shield with magic affinity at 71.2 magic damage negation

Best fire resist:

Side note: Fire and Flame art affinity makes no difference with damage negation

Man-Serpent's Shield with the fire affinity takes the crown at 60.0 fire damage negation

Best Lightning Resist:

Spiralhorn Shield takes it at 48.7 lightning resistance with the Lightning Affinity

Best Holy Resist:

Gilded Iron shield is the king of holy resist for small shields at 63.7 Holy damage Negation with the Sacred Affinity

Medium Shields:

Guard Boost:

The best medium shield for guard boost is the Brass Shield at 69 guard boost, followed up by the Banished knights shield at 68. I'm only mentioning this because the guard boost is very close.

Magic Resist:

Undisputed champ of magic resist is the Silver Mirror Shield that you can obtain in the consecrated snowfield (if the name is wrong its the part of the snow area where you can get to the haligtree) at an absolutely impressive 89.0 Magic damage negation

Side note 1: Carian Knight Shield (the one you get from king of parries moongrum) is the 2nd best for magic resist at 88.7 damage negation with the Magic Affinity.

Side note 2: If you want a shield thats got close to the same magic damage negation as the Carian Knight Shield. Get the Albinauric Shield with the magic affinity. Its got 82.5 magic damage negation and no int requirement (the other shield does) and its got a higher guard boost, might be a better option.

Fire Resist:

The Brass shield makes another appearance at an impressive 73.7 fire damage negation with the Fire Affinity.

Lightning Resist:

None of us should be surprised considering where you get this one from. The Beastman's Jar-Shield takes the cake at 75.0 lightning resistance with the Lightning Affinity.

Side note: If you want a shield that unironically has really good lightning negation after you get the wetstone that give you lightning affinity, the Marred Wooden shield has 62.5 lightning negation. You can get the Marred wooden shield along the same path you take thats the "Safe" path into stormveil. Its on the dead body right after the first grace you see thats past the bird.

Holy Resist:

The Sun Realm Shield takes it at 70.0 Holy damage negation with the sacred affinity

Large Shields:

Guard Boost:

We all know its the Fingerprint Stoneshield you get after you beat mohg the omen in the sewers in lendeyll at 86 guard boost.

Side Note 1: A really good one to get really early in the game after you beat margit is the Manor Towershield, its really easy to get right before godricks arena, look on youtube to find where to get it, it can be a bit tricky. It comes in at 75 guard boost maxed at 25.

Side Note 2: Another nice one you can get that has 82 guard boost (but requires 44 strength) is the Visage Shield that you can snag in caleid.

Magic Resist:

The undisputed king for magic damage negation is once again the Fingerprint Stone Shield at a solid 96.2 magic damage negation with the Magic Affinity

Side note: Two really good option are the Eclipse Crest Greatshield with the magic affinity at 90.0 magic damage negation and the Manor Towershield at 82.5 magic negation with the magic affinity.

Fire Resist:

My reaction to this was quite literally "EXCUSE ME WHAT?!" The winner for this category is no joke, the Fingerprint Stoneshield at 100.0 FIRE DAMAGE NEGATION with the fire affinity. It also comes in at a 90.0 damage negation with LIGHTNING with the fire affinity as well (thought i'd just mention that too). I have attached a picture just in case y'all dont believe me. Fingerprint sillyness

Side note 1: Ok no joke, the manor tower shield is coming in AGAIN as a solid pick for fire damage negation as well with a solid 82.5. I keep mentioning this because of how EARLY you can get this shield.

Side note 2: Another extremely good shield that doesnt require 40+ strength for fire damage negation is the Redmane Greatshield at 87.5 fire damage negation with the fire affinity.

Lightning Resist:

Dear god why is it the fingerprint shield again... Yes the fingerprint shield won yet again at 98.7 Lightning resistance with the lightning affinity.

Side note: I just feel obligated to tell y'all about a few good ones earlier than fingerprint. Golden greatshield at 71.2 lightning resist with lightning affinity, Manor tower shield at 63.7 lightning resist with lightning affiniy, the Dragon Tower shield is another good option at 68.7 lightning damage negation with lightning affinity, and an even EARLIER shield that you can get before manor tower shield is the Gilded greatshield with a lightning damage negation of 67.5 with the lightning affinity.

Holy resist:

Don't worry, its not the fingerprint shield this time. The Haligtree crest greatshield takes this at a solid 98.7 holy damage negation with the Sacred Affinity.

Side note 1: Yes...you can get the fingerprint stoneshield earlier than the haligtree crest greatshield and yes it is at a 93.7 holy damage negation with sacred affinity.

Side note 2: Another solid option is the Golden Greatshield at 85.0 holy damage negation with the sacred affinity and the crossed tree towershield that you can buy from a merchant that is near goldmask is at 82.5 holy damage negation with the sacred affinity.

Alright I'm done. These are the findings i've made with the shields. Hope this serves you all well. Good luck!

Best shield for damage?

What are the best shields for combat to use as a main weapon? Preferably melee, I want to bonk some baddies with a big ol’ shield.

I want to do a shield-only run of Elden Ring, to live my fantasy of being a paladin dual-wielding shields and bludgeoning my enemies. Don’t ask, I’m fine.

I'd go with the Spiked Palisade Shield as the shield bash can cause bleeding. Perhaps normal right handed bashes will do bleeding damage too 🤔

If you wanna look even more ridiculous, use the Spiked shield in your main hand, and then use the tiny ass Buckler on your offhand, specifically for its wide parry window 😎

I'm doing the same run right now with the addition of torches.....

Right now I'm using the visage greatshield but the spiked palisade shield seems really good too with the bleed and ash of war.

I'm also going to use the one eye shield for the gun aspect. Pretty fun so far.

Generally I prefer keeping my SoTr for rings and artifacts. In this case you can transmute your alchemy kit searching for an Hourglass or Chains, or maybe keep them for the imp's ring.

And, as some have pointed out, you need to keep a better balance with your offence. Generally +8 is more than enough, even when using warrior, you won't die of melee damage, so you should focus more on your weapon to quickly take out the more dangerous monsters

So the best shield is worse than a buckler?

don't actually know if it is the best, but the description says it 'provides the best resistance against physical attacks among the great shields'. ok... but the numbers say its worthless. am i missing something?

skysteel shield - 20% chance of +80 defence. +4 encumbrance

buckler - 20% chance of 100% reduction. +1 encumbrance

is there any reason to use shields over (better) bucklers?

IMHO, all in all, game start excepted, shields are useless, even more so as the game difficulty goes up (you'll eventually get one-shot even if the shield procs), which makes even more annoying the fact that they are equipped by default if you auto-equip!

2 upvotes on reddit
Dablackbird · 4 months ago

Shields has better % to proc, so if you have a shield with 50% proc, this is proving every two attacks raising greatly the defense. Shields are better for Frontline as they are heavier and your Frontline should have good defense anyways. Bucklers totally null the damage but they have low percentage and are lighter so is more like a last resort for some characters than won't take too many hits

6 upvotes on reddit
TheLoneDragoon · 4 months ago

The best buckler has 40% chance to block. Add that with auto parry + tough hide on your front line tank and you will almost never get hit by physical attacks. Shields are OK in lower difficulties, but in classic(hard)+, dmg numbers will scale very high making the phys def gained from shields not as enticing as taking 0 dmg.

Once you start getting harmonia bucklers or earth guard+ i would swap over to bucklers personally. All 5 of my characters in romancing are wearing a willguard+ as it's basically a 40% chance to not get one shot.

Best weapons in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Best armor in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree gameplay tips

AI Answer

🤖

Best shields in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Key Considerations for Choosing Shields in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

  1. Damage Negation: Look for shields with high physical damage negation if you plan to face melee enemies. Consider the percentage of damage reduction for different types (physical, magic, fire, etc.).

  2. Stability: A higher stability rating allows you to block attacks with less stamina consumption. This is crucial for prolonged encounters.

  3. Weight: Lighter shields allow for better mobility and dodging, while heavier shields provide more protection but can hinder your movement.

  4. Special Abilities: Some shields come with unique skills or passive effects that can enhance your gameplay. For example, shields that can parry or provide buffs.

  5. Scaling: Check the shield's scaling with your attributes (Strength, Dexterity, etc.) to maximize its effectiveness based on your build.

Top Recommendations:

  1. Fingerprint Stone Shield:

    • Damage Negation: Excellent physical damage negation.
    • Stability: High stability.
    • Weight: Heavy, but offers great protection.
    • Special Ability: Can be used for strong blocking against heavy attacks.
  2. Greatshield Talisman:

    • Damage Negation: High physical and elemental damage negation.
    • Weight: Moderate.
    • Special Ability: Boosts guard effectiveness.
  3. Dragoncrest Shield Talisman:

    • Damage Negation: Provides a significant boost to physical damage negation.
    • Weight: Lightweight.
    • Special Ability: Enhances your overall defense.
  4. Erdtree Greatshield:

    • Damage Negation: Good balance of physical and elemental negation.
    • Weight: Moderate.
    • Special Ability: Unique skill that can be useful in various situations.

Recommendation: If you're looking for a well-rounded shield, the Fingerprint Stone Shield is often considered one of the best due to its high damage negation and stability, making it ideal for tanky builds. However, if you prefer a lighter option, consider the Erdtree Greatshield for its versatility and decent protection. Always choose based on your playstyle and build!
