Combat Techniques
In "Shadow of the Erdtree," parrying is often more rewarding than dodging. Parrying can stagger bosses and even break their weapons, reducing their damage output [1:1]. However, dodging remains useful, especially for attacks that are difficult to parry
[1:5]. It's important to balance both techniques depending on the enemy's attack patterns
[1:3].
Leveling and Builds
For optimal progression, focus on leveling Vitality, Vigor, and Capacity [1:1]
[1:3]. These stats provide a balanced approach to surviving and dealing damage. Motivity builds are popular for staggering bosses, with weapons like the bone-cutting saw being highly recommended
[1:4]. If you're running a moonlight sword build, consider bringing other versatile weapons into the DLC
[2:2].
Scadutree Fragments
Scadutree Fragments are crucial for progressing in the DLC. They increase your damage dealt and decrease damage taken, making them essential for tackling tougher enemies and bosses [3:1]
[3:3]. Collecting these fragments should be a priority as they significantly impact your ability to survive and deal damage
[2:1].
Exploration and Strategy
Exploration is key in Elden Ring, including the DLC. Many players recommend exploring thoroughly to find items and Scadutree Fragments [4:1]
[5:1]. Don't hesitate to run past difficult enemies or return later when you're stronger
[5:10]. This approach allows you to gather resources and level up without unnecessary frustration.
General Tips
Starting the DLC after completing the main game at around level 120-150 is advisable [2:1]. Utilize spirit summons for challenging fights, especially against dragons and deathrite birds
[2:2]. Remember, it's okay to miss some quests; focus on enjoying the exploration and combat
[5:1]. Lastly, embrace the challenge and learn from each defeat, as this is part of the game's design
[4:3].
When I finished playing the Elden ring SOTE my friend recommended me this game. I didn't really watch any trailers or reviews I just trusted my friend. I decided to go a strenght build or motivity because I like staggering bosses. But what's the best way to evade damage in this game. Is it parrying or dodging. What should be my playstyle. Do I prioritize leveling HP the most or damage. What are some recommendations for motivity weapons?
Accept the fact that each boss fight is going to take several attempts. Read the boss pattern the first few attempts just by doing defensive moves. The game forces you to parry during NG because you cant chain dodge more than twice. Some of the delayed attacks are easier to dodge than parry. Stock up on shotput balls as it is much easier to break posture using them than charged heavy attack.
I've beaten the game eight times. You only need to level up Vitality, Capacity, and a small amount of Vigor. Pretty much every weapon in the game is viable as long as you upgrade it. The game is designed to favor equal amounts of dodging and Perfect Guarding.
I started this game last week and now at the final boss running a pure motivity build.
I used the starter greatsword until I got the bone cutting saw in chapter 5. Really good at staggering bosses (Police Baton + Saw)
The game is mostly built around parrying. Even if you start blocking to early and don't fully negate the damage, you can still recover the damage you took by attacking. On the other hand, if you mistime your dodge, you simply take all the damage. Dodging is still useful for avoiding attacks and combos you aren't confident you can parry, though in that case it's better to get physically out of the way of an attack rather than i-frame through it.
Blocking and parrying also builds up the enemies' stagger meters, meaning it directly enables the thing you want to do anyway.
I haven't used motivity weapons so far, but I heard the handle of the Police Baton is a good, quick motivity handle (the game has a weapon crafting system where you can mix different handles and blades. Handles determine moveset and scaling, blades base stats and attack speed)
Parrying is more rewarded in this game than dodging. It makes it so the boss becomes staggerable and if the boss has a weapon, it eventually breaks it, reducing their damage and attack distance considerably. Some bosses are extremely hard unless you break their weapon.
As far as stats go, you only need to upgrade the first three (Vitality, Vigor and Capacity). You can play the whole game just by spending your points on these stats equally without a problem.
Going to finally get some time aside to beat the dlc. The questions I have though are,
Basically what the other comment has said. imo it's harder than Old Hunters on base ng, assuming you're going in solo melee. Roughly the same in difficulty on max ng+ cycle.
Get the best spirit summons (look these up) and level them up. There are more than a few dragons and deathrite birds that you're better off just summoning and getting it over with.
Unless you're checking a guide you're bound to miss a lot of stuff, especially the character quests. Don't fret too much over them.
So he's not going in solo melee if he summons
1+2: Beat the base game for the best start in it. Around 120-150 would be pretty good.
3: Whatever you like, bring in whatever. You can go back to the base game at any time.
4: Probably.
5: Collect Scadutree Fragments to increase your damage and defenses. This is how you actually get strong enough to take on the DLC. If you do not, no matter what level you are, you're gonna get ground to dust.
I bet you someone out there has beaten the dlc without the fragments. There has to be lol.
Anything you can think of, it’s been done lol. These games are challenge run heavens
So I finished Elden Ring at level 150 after defeating every boss in the game and thought I'd be able to pick up the dlc and run through it no problem but I can't even get through the first boss. Like I'm struggling the same as I did when I played Elden Ring the first time. How are people making it easier on themselves besides just getting gud? Would love some advice.
When you say first boss are you talking about the knight or the obvious big boss with a cutscene (trying to not spoiler)
If it's the knight, you really have to focus on his attacks and decide if you play safe and punish the crossbow or go hard and get rekt from his sword over and over like me.
If it's the other, good luck, he's really hard or medium depending on build and weapon.
Go get the Scadutree fragments. They are the DLC's power progression system, and the bosses are scaled to them. If you can't find any, you can look up a guide online.
It's worth mentioning that you can get scadutree lvl 14 without killing any bosses
You can beat the game at like 8-9 Scadu level.
Do some people do the DLC withour them? :o
You can't, you'd deal so little damage that even a field boss would take an hour to beat at max level
I started the DLC this week after creating a new character, which took me 80 hours just to get to it. First impressions are that this is practically Elden Ring II, and has some of the best areas and exploration that from have created.
The DLC has a unique levelling system for both summons and yourself. It's genious as it gives that constant progression feeling even with a high level character, and doesn't spoil the main game if you've not finished it.
Don't try attacking the giant flame golem unless you know what you're doing (I don't).
The first gaol optional mini boss in the start area is an arsehole. My build is a light blue dancer doll/dagger/buckler and he is a bitch for me.
Scadutree Fragments are your best friend. Welcome to the best DLC ever mate
Make sure you’re obtaining scadutree fragments so you can level up your scadutree blessing at sites of grace. It increases your damage dealt and decreases your damage taken so it’s essential for keeping up with the increased damage and hp of the dlc enemies.
Gravity kills, use rainbow stones if concerned. Buy a lamp. Follow lights of grace.
Lamp is crucial. Also, the beast-repellant torch. One of the most underrated items in the game.
"Prepare to die" isn't a warning, it's a strategy. Making suicide runs to grab specific items can help tremendously.
100%
Also don’t forget to upgrade your weapons with smithing stones that you find and buy from vendors
level health, upgrade weapons, explore, and most importantly have fun.
Almost all of your issues can be solved by either exploring more of the world, learning the boss’ moves, and/or adding more points to Vigor.
I’m a new player diving into Elden Ring for the first time, and as the game is now two years old, I have read the old comprehensive guide but I imagine the community has learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t. I’d love your advice on the following:
What are the absolute must-know tips for a beginner?
Whether it’s about character builds, exploring, or combat strategies, what would you tell someone just starting today?
Is there anything you wish you’d done differently if you could start fresh?
What are the biggest lessons learned in the past two years?
Have there been any revelations about mechanics, items, or strategies that aren’t immediately obvious to new players?
With the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC on the horizon, do you have any preparation tips? Is there specific gear, builds, or lore I should be aware of that might tie into this expansion?
I’m trying to approach this game with an open mind and fully enjoy the world, but I know it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Any guidance, from small quality-of-life tips to major gameplay strategies, would be massively appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Tarnished!
I am still on my first play through. Just got the game as well. Been playing ds 1 and 3. My experience is to start with something simple. And for me that is a strength build. And when things get too difficult I google on that specific problem. There is a joy in going in blind. And do not trip if an enemy is too difficult. Go somewhere else and come back later. It’s a beautiful game. Maybe the best I have ever tried. Enjoy.
I think Strength was my favorite build. Get the Giant Crusher in early game.
That’s true I just came from DS3 and so far am loving the game. The cut scenes, environment change and gameplay are all really cool. I don’t mind dying hard at all as long as I am learning something every-time. I love exploring the map, going places where I shouldn’t. Found some crazy places, hid in bushes, stabbed their backs and ran. It’s awesome.
Agree. So many surprises.
Imo it’s best to experience this game blind from the start. The discovery just adds so much to it. The only thing I would think is worth looking up are some of the side quest as they are easy to miss and have cool gear and weapons/spells but even then I would try them out before looking it up. Don’t be afraid to try out different things. You can respec at some point like mid game. On a second run through or after you beat the game I would then look up a guide to find everything you might have missed. And also to add on to my point about my side quest, it’s no big deal if you miss them. I have 200+ hours in the game and have not done them all. There is just a ton to explore and find. I feel like a comprehensive guide would take a lot of the fun out of it.
In my experience this is all you need:
Level up vigor
Have fun with your favorite build
3.Don’t spread stats unless you know what you are doing
It’s ok to miss some quests
Gather Scooby doo blessings for the DLC
Use your consumables!
Currently I’m on the storm gate giant boss and he’s giving me a hard time. I level up my strength stat to 10 to wield the long sword and changed my armor to one of the guards.
I’ll definitely increase my vigor as currently I am a two shot easy kill for anyone. Learned to dodge but finding it hard to attack sitting on the donkey.
The giant at stormgate? You can easily run past him. Or you can go south to weeping peninsula or east. Just don’t go to Caelid
> Gather Scooby doo blessings
What are these?
Fextralife was a great guide, very helpful for me. I also recommend quitting your job and leaving your wife and child. Commit to ER.
The grind is real! Found a dragon this early in game, turned out I could just run away from it. Coz I can’t even kill a small rat for now.
Bro I found this WiKi
This will be my first time experiencing a FromSoft DLC on release and was wondering if there are any tips for preparing a new playthrough for them based on previous experience. (for example items to horde, a good level to get to etc)
I understand that it’s safe to assume that you need to beat at least Radahn and Mohg to get access to the DLC, would this be a good place to stop my new playthrough until drops?
Any answers to these questions would be appreciated!
I think you should go no further than defeating the Fire Giant. i.e. not burning the Erdtree OR inheriting the Frenzied Flame. For all we know Melina might get a part to play, like the NPC's did in Bloodborne: The Old Hunters.
You might wanna avoid burning the Erdtree down before going into the DLC. Who knows, maybe beating the DLC unlocks a new interaction with an NPC or something, that happened in FromSoft's games before.
Otherwise, probably just be sure to have plenty of upgraded healing flasks and a +10/+25 weapon.
Other than that I would probably recommend using the Blessed Dew Talisman and the Turtle Talisman for general exploration of the new areas. That healing may seem slow, but it extends exploration immensely. And stamina regen is always great when you're facing new enemies whose movset you're not familiar with.
It’s been a while since I’ve done a full playthrough so thank you for this info! I will definitely be looking into those talismans
I find that I play pretty aggressive melee bleed with Eleanora’s Poleblade and get rocked hard at times. I get greedy and push through most of the time, and not only by bosses. Like the crucible knight in the capital, that’s guys was a pain.
Just curious what others play like.
Shoot strong magic and run like hell
Tactics? Swing until I hit is a tactic right?
Hell yeah it is!
Find the biggest sword I can.and swing it as hard as I can.
Run around naked don't get hit
The greatest weapon in every Souls players toolkit: patience.
Elden Ring came very highly recommended by many on the Expedition 33 sub (my new all-time favorite game), so I bought it (PS5) but I'm feeling very discouraged.
This is my first souls game. I don't mind dying a lot or difficulty, and I like parry and dodge mechanics in general. I rage uninstalled after a string of frustrations. I'd love some tips to help me give Elden Ring a fair shot.
The most challenging for me is switching between bow and sword (samurai). Somehow I always wind up firing arrows when I want to slash, and ending up with no weapon equipped.
The next is probably just getting pointed in the direction I want to attack when being attacked. It's frustrating being stun-locked by enemies I can one-shot.
The next two are by design and my own fault: I keep changing potions from heath to FP somehow (this is totally on me/muscle memory). And I can't summon everywhere (obviously by design).
While in the end, this game might not be for me, please don't recommend I just go play fortnight (I hate those games) or a mobile match3 game (I love those games). I'm honestly trying. The world in Elden Ring is extraordinarily beautiful, and I'm only in the first part of Limgrave.
I know there are videos on how to become OP, but I'd prefer to play organically.
Edit: Wow. Thank you all so much for the helpful and friendly advice! I forgot about locking on right after the tutorial, and had no idea you could (should) put the bow and sword on the same hand. Reinstalling now!
Don't use the bow when fighting bosses. Bows are weak in Elden ring and only really useful for luring enemies 1 by 1 so you don't get mobbed. I have thousands of hours on this game and have never touched a bow.
Honestly? Just gotta have perseverance and push through. Keep playing. With enough time you’ll “get gud” but that takes a little practice. A lot of the issues you’re talking about is just unfamiliarity with the controls and UI. Do practice runs where you just switch between weapons and attack, before engaging an enemy. Commit to the pattern of controls and when you screw up, try again. Practice glancing at the bottom left corner of the screen to know where you’re at with flasks/loadout before pressing any buttons. You’ll figure it out, have faith.
I’m not a great gamer in general, I usually suck at most games when I start and I’m horrible at FPS. Elden Ring was fuuuuuucking brutal, but I loved it so much that I kept playing. I did have a couple buddies I’d co-op with which was 100% a safety blanket, but eventually I just started playing more and more on my own and then yeah, rest is history. I haven’t sunk as many hours into any game as I have with Elden ring. I envy you, you’re in for such a good ride.
And yes please do play organically. Let yourself make all kind of mistakes, get lost, and struggle. It's all part of the experience and your first ever souls game will stick with you the most, and if you get addicted to these games like so many others, it'll be hard to ever meet that feeling again with another souls game. So better to let it be a unique experience not watered down by guides and clickbait buzzword copycat youtubers.
That game was also my first souls game and it absolutely kicked my ass for a while I struggled for a while but you gotta keep at it it’s so worth the grind
If you prefer parry mechanics you will like much more Sekiro : Shadows Die Twice(the best fromsoftware game) and maybe Lies of P .
Anyway i never found bow much useful except if i wanted to separete enemies from a group and in Elden Ring you will need to do this fewer times from older souls games. 51 poise(poise should be shown above or below equip load) allows to tank small hits like an anemy attack with dagger or a hit of imps(the annoying green creatures at tombs) without getting flintched. Also in beginning of the game the most important stat is vigor(the stat of HP).
Hi everyone, last year i played the base game a lot, completed it with almost all main playstyles, so completely used to it. My most favorite ones were arcane and str/faith builds. I like playing from scratch anytime i try a new build, to personally feel it in a bit more hollistic way.
Anyway, now i have some time and i just purchased expansion SOTE and thus will restart playing elden ring. Want to try to finish also SOTE with various builds (capped at rl 150).
Would very much like it of you guys can give me some weapon/build ideas completely focused on sote that i can try.
Not asking for details (of course would love it) but more like which weapon/playstyle would match and be a nice combo (no need for op obviously).
Thanks a lot already.

How about my gravity samurai? https://www.reddit.com/r/EldenRingBuilds/s/99TTRdRHQW
Liked it, will give a chance when i got those two weapons.
Strength+Faith has loads of good options in the DLC; can try out a specialized lightning damage build with Clawmark Seal + Death Knight equips, they're all very solid IMO. It's one of the builds that has the best mix of consistent theming and simultaneous damage-boosting synergy (all of the Death Knight armor pieces boost lightning damage for both your weapons and your spells)
This one worked wonderfully until radahn
In the very first area of SotE you can get a LOT of solid weapons that are in the new DLC weapon classes. I'd pick one of them and build around that. Great Katana & Milady are my favorites - backhand blades, black steel greathammer, & beast claws would be great options too.
Would katana/milady suit more to an arcane build or strength/faith, in your opinion?
Katana is more dex/arcane. MiLady is insanely versatile. It works equally as well on almost all infusions, but it's multi-hit moveset does push anything with status buildup a bit higher.
I've played both weapons with those infusions and I feel like they're both very versatile.
I'm thinking about advice for people who don't have the patience to learn, this early in the game, how to parry or take advantage of i-frames. This overall kind of advice was once very useful for me. It's the only thing that kept me playing Elden Ring long enough to become good enough at it to eventually enjoy several Souls and soulslike games. I mention this because some people think this kind of advice only delays the inevitable rage quitting. For me, it did just the opposite.
The goal is to have the Sword Master available as a summon for Vordt, not to get the uchigatana early.
The weapon art on most straight swords has some pretty good reach, most npc enemies don't know how to deal with it.
Yep. As a Knight I just take off my shield so I can L2+R2 which will interrupt his weapon art, then do 2 R1s and have enough stamina to roll away (if you 2h your sword, you'll lack stamina for a moment).
Rinse and repeat for ez win.
You can lure him over the edge so he falls, without fighting him. Here's another way of doing it.
Yeah I think I accidentally kicked him off when I was new to darksouls.
Kicking is another popular strategy. People used to do something similar to the Black Knight in Darkroot Basin in Dark Souls 1 to get the Black Knight Halberd.
Another solution is if you don't already have a bow, you can get the Longbow from the high wall of lothric and then you can use the >!ree jump trick to get onto the roof of firelink and get just above him near the crystal lizard where you drop down and cheese the sword master with arrows.!<
or you can just lure him to the firelink shrine's entrance, he can't enter it so he just stands there looking at you
Yeah kiting him to the door and then just abusing his inability to walk through it is definitely the absolute go to cheese strat. It isn't super necessary, (he's one of the easiest NPCs to just straight up beat in a fight to begin with,) but remembering the strat can be useful later if you decide to kill Yuria, because she get stuck on the opposite side of the same doorway, and is a much better swordfighter that the supposed master.
I always did this, somehow he was immune to the ledge trick in my playthroughs.
Uchigatana Guy has a like passive "I'm walking towards you" animation. I think you can see a bit of it in 0:45 left and 0:22 left. When I see him do this I have him walk into a flurry of light attacks but roll away with the last bit of stamina. Repeat until he dies.
Should be doable with any melee class.
I use a similar strategy against the Sword Lothric guys. They also have this "I'm walking towards you" animation.
Recording of me doing my strategy: https://youtu.be/6gYAEek0D2M
Here is just a big video of me using the strategy with various weapons and "weapons". I'm sure the strategy would go a lot better for others had they gone in with better weapons, armor, level ups from the bonfire, etc. Do note that I had to find a way to die during each encounter.
Two reasons. One is because I'm bad. More importantly is number two, had the Uchigatana Guy die then that would've meant I had to start a new file. The original plan was to jump off the cliff after Uchigatana Guy's HP reach 1/4 left but I feared that he might follow me into the abyss thus requiring a restart.
My starting class was Knight. I chose that because I wanted to buy a variety of weapons from the merchant and I figured selling the fancy armor meant I could buy my weapons without farming souls.
Edit: Don't subscribe to me for this.
Honestly I just play aggressive and don't give him a second to breathe, rarely have any trouble with him
