TL;DR
Bone Conduction Headphones
Bone conduction headphones, such as the Shokz OpenSwim, are frequently recommended for swimming due to their ability to deliver sound through vibrations, leaving the ears open. These headphones have an IP68 waterproof rating and offer up to 8 hours of battery life [1:3]. Users appreciate their sound quality and reliability during swimming sessions, even at high speeds and while performing flip turns
[1:5]. However, they require pre-loading music onto the device since Bluetooth signals do not transmit well underwater
[1:7].
Wired Earbuds and MP3 Players
For those who prefer traditional earbuds, wired options like Swimbuds paired with waterproof MP3 players are popular choices. Users have mentioned using waterproofed iPod Shuffles from Audioflood and Sony waterproof MP3 players [2:1],
[3:4]. These setups can be more reliable in terms of keeping water out, especially when used with a swim cap
[2:1].
Streaming Capabilities
If streaming is important, devices like the Underwater Audio Delphin can run various apps such as Spotify and Audible. This device clips onto goggles and works with both wired and wireless headphones [3:6]. However, users should be aware of Bluetooth limitations underwater and consider devices that allow pre-loaded content for uninterrupted listening
[3:5].
Ear Protection
For swimmers looking to prevent ear pain or block water entry, products like Mack’s Aquablock Earplugs and Speedo Biofuse earplugs are recommended [5:1],
[5:4]. These can be used in conjunction with bone conduction headphones to ensure both protection and audio enjoyment.
Considerations Beyond Discussions
When selecting waterproof earbuds for swimming, consider factors such as comfort, ease of use, and compatibility with your existing devices. It's also beneficial to check user reviews and ratings on platforms like Amazon to ensure product reliability and satisfaction.
Price doesn’t matter.
i have the JBL Reflect Flow Pro+ Wireless Sports Earbuds and i am really happy with it, i know there is more that are also really good i found a article that kind of sums it up, hope that helps.
For swimming, I highly recommend checking out the Shokz OpenSwim bone conduction headphones. They use innovative bone conduction technology to deliver quality audio through vibrations, leaving your ears open and making them perfect for swimming. With an IP68 waterproof rating and up to 8 hours of battery life, the OpenSwim headphones are designed specifically for an immersive underwater audio experience.
Yes this is what I got! (Thanks Santa) and I highly recommend them. I love them!!
There are no underwater earbuds. Most of them are bone conduction of one way or another.
I personally use, and recommend, the Shokz brand swimming headphones: https://shokz.com/products/openswim
You have to load your music (or podcasts) on to them though first. There are other versions that connect bluetooth / radio frequency to your phone if that's your thing - I just find these work super well and I can leave my phone locked up in my car or my locker as an additional bonus.
I was turned on to them by a former Olympian while I was at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs for a Masters weekend. Absolutely the best. No problem at speed, flip turns, etc. Love mine. Also got a pair for my wife for use on her walks. They leave the ear open to hear things like sirens, etc. In the water, exceptional sound quality.
FYI, the Bluetooth ones wouldn’t work for swimming because water blocks Bluetooth signals.
That's not quite true. Usually it's a transponder that connects via bluetooth and translates to radio frequency - so it's a bit of both for some underwater options.
The ones I linked don't have either and just work with loaded music which I think is the better solution anyhow personally - I don't want my phone lying out in the open where I'm not paying attention to it even at my gym's pool.
Thanks for this rec! I’m working on a Christmas list my husband asked me for…so I thought listening to music while swimming could be a new goal.
I listen to audiobooks myself, and I would have given up swimming ages ago if it wasn't for this!!
Yes, I also use Openswim. I will say that there ARE underwater earbuds/earphones, but they are all wired as Bluetooth doesn't work well in the water (as others have pointed out.) I always found that over a 40m workout the earphone would slip and I wasn't always able to adjust it so that I could hear correctly. Bone conduction is much better!
Shokz Openswim user here. Tried others but these are the best. Too bad I couldn't figure out how to make a playlist that the device recognise.
DONT WEAR AIRPODS BRUH
Ear buds, airheads….whatever they’re called. Things in your ears to listen to music. Back in my day, we had a cord and red foam on the outside of our ears.
And I’m a bra, not a bro.
Are there any earbuds that I can use at the gym for jogging, lifting, and swimming?

your welcome
If you are OK with an MP3 only device, either the Aftershocks Xtrainer (seems to get good reviews although I havent used it personally) or the Sony WS-413, which I have used. It stays in better than anything else I've used, has no cords and goes decently loud which is important for me.
If you want streaming audio, your options are more limited. I have the Underwater Audio Delphin which comes in 8Gb and 16Gb size. Definitely get the 16Gb, as the operating system etc takes up almost 4Gb. You need a premium subscription to Spotify, Deezer or Youtube Music to be able to download your playlists to it before going in the water - it doesnt stream over Bluetooth or Wifi while you swim as neither work in water.
Comes with a reasonably good pair of headphones which with the right cone/ tree shape tips are pretty watertight (flip turns may be an issue though). Volume is a little quiet, but there is a way to squeeze a bit more out of it though. I have been using this for several weeks without any major issues.
To listen to music with, or to just block out sound?
listen to music
I'm using JBL Endurance DIVE and so far they've done a good enough job for me =)
Aftershokz Xtrainerz. https://www.amazon.com/stores/page/8335E092-0EB5-4DD4-A685-CE79D35C8DFE?ingress=2&visitId=9dab8a0b-716d-4188-924f-a61ed1905714&ref_=ast_bln they aren't currently available on Amazon but you can find them elsewhere.
I have a waterproofed iPod shuffle from audioflood which came with waterproof headphones. Those worked fine especially with a cap but I ended up getting a pair of swimbuds which seem to keep water out better.
I have also previously used a Sony waterproof mp3 player (can’t remember the exact model) and that was okay too but had even more problems keeping water out and it was pretty uncomfortable with a cap.
I’m kinda interested in trying bone conduction headphones but haven’t found a nice wired model I could use with my ipod.
Swimming for a long time can be very boring and listening to some podcasts or music might help increase how long I swim. I’m wondering if anybody has any experience with waterproof headphones (Bluetooth or otherwise) with any recommendations or other thoughts?
I understand that Bluetooth doesn’t work well underwater so I’d stay away from those unless you stay above the surface.
I use a wired pair from Underwater audio which are ok but occasionally go mono (ie stop working in one ear). Ok apart from that.
They also have a new player that uses Spotify. Haven’t tried that one tho.
>The Delphin by Underwater Audio can run Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, Audible, MP3, AAC, Deezer, Amazon Music, SoundCloud, Sirius XM, iHeart Radio, Podcast and Radio Addict, and a lap tracking app. You clip it on the back of your goggles and it works with wired or wireless headphones. Check it out at our website:

Is this connected to an mp3?
Yeah, waterproof iPod shuffle. The old type that’s been discontinued.
I do the same. The Water-fi behind the head ones by Underwater Audio are still going strong after a year of lap swimming. I’ve been using their waterproofed iPod Shuffle for kiteboarding for at least 3 yrs and the only thing that kills them eventually is saltwater corroding the headphone jack.
I use swimbuds with a syryn mp3 player. It's pretty barebones, but works fairly well for just listening to music on shuffle.
Sony NWWS413LM 4GB are pretty good.
They get kinda muted with the waterproof tips but they do the job just fine.
Don't make the same mistake I did: double check the range for the bluetooth signal. I bought a pair with a range of 33ft, which seems to be the standard. I haven't tried them yet, but I technically wouldn't be able to use them in a regular 25m (82ft) pool.
Thank you already, I was eyeing a pair that had 35 ft so thank you for the reminder!
Sony waterproof mp3 work quite well. They make laps much more enjoyable.
Doing some rehab in a pool and looking to get back into swimming but I'd like to listen to music and audiobooks. Does anyone know quality earbuds to wear while swimming and work in the water? I have a galaxy watch I can Bluetooth them too so if they can link with that id be happier too. I just don't trust online tech review sites cause they're often biased

I want to start swimming to work out while I recover from a knee injury but I always get pretty bad ear pain whenever I swim with any frequency, and I figured that some earbuds might be a good way to stop water from going inside my ear while I swim, while also allowing me to listen to music or podcasts while I do my workout. Any help is greatly appreciated!
you chan have a swimming headphones, which supports spotify or audible, no need to download mp3.

You're getting answers for ear plugs, but you want to listen to music. Search "music" on this sub for tons of threads on this. The most popular answer is Shokz, which are bone conduction, and you wear earplugs plugs with them.
I use Mack’s Aquablock Earplugs and have been for probably ten years now. They’re purple and will prob cost you $7-10 for a pair of 2 or 3. Look on Amazon.
Speedo biofuse are good.
Anyone know a good brand of waterproof earphones?
I've been searching for the same thing for over a year, it doesn't look like there is a "go to best" pair of earphones for swimming. To my knowledge the sony NWWS413BM sport wearable are the best on amazon from my research. I'm personally looking for a pair where I can listen to audiobooks, but those should work for music.
I highly recommend those earphones!! The are not the cheapest one but they are worth it.
I had those. Super painful..the Aftershokz Xtrainerz are 10x better comfort and sound wise. They're perfect.
Agree! I have these ones and they have never failed me.
Thanks
Aftershokz Xtrainerz. They're .mp3 headphones since Bluetooth doesn't work very well underwater but they work to perfection. I did a review of them a while back.
Going to seriously look into these, thanks.
best quality? or best value? or best fit? I use the $3 cheap ones from ebay and just replace when worn out. Swim cap holds them in during flip turns.
I swim without a cap, I’d be down to pay $ for quality and fit so they hold in and don’t fall out.
If you flip turn, you may want to try cheap ones first. Though I've never tried it, I can't imagine even expensive ear buds staying in my ears without a cap covering my ears
Been using underwater audio Syryn for about a year, works well.
I use Swimbuds with my waterproof MP3 player and they've held up great for the past six months or so.
I'm trying to get back into swimming for mental health reasons and to try to help try to help lose weight (also changing diet but have issues with things like running due to asthma). Are there any earbuds that you can listen to while swimming laps? I want to have something that can help distract me and not be so concerned about the time.
I know a person in pool who uses underwater audio” bone conduction $270 .. does anyone know if they are good. Also apple doesn’t make swimming buds???
Oh hi there! Are any recommendations for now because some models are out of stock? Any new exprerience about hearing podcast during swimming? Thank you.
I have these from Amazon. They're not as good as the Shockz (comparing them to my husbands OpenRun bone conduction headphones) but they let me have music in the pool for cheap.

For anyone who stumbles upon this, the Lypertek Pureplay Z3 are ridiculously waterproof. Like ridiculously, they sat in a yard through part of winter and found after the snow had melted
Not a swimmer but used them swimming a few times and showering
Avoid Zygo! I got it as a gift and it’s barely functional. And it’s $299! I’m glad to see these other options and recommendations.
I've seen a few things about that while looking things up. I just want something that I can use so that I can just distract myself from the time. As a kid, I would often be in the pool from 11am until mom came over and forced me out around somewhere between 5-7pm. I want to be able to swim and not worry about time like I did then.
I bought these twice. The first time was about three years ago, and they stopped working after three months, as if they had a short-circuit. The second time was a few months ago. I thought maybe they had fixed the problem, but it was worse! They only lasted one month. Additionally, I did not receive a full refund; they only refunded about 80% due to the shipping cost.
Thank you for the timely warning, was considering one of these
Can you expand? I really like the idea of the zygo just being streamed from the phone.
Earbuds tend to fall out easily, especially when you're moving around a lot in the water. Bone conduction headphones can better sit comfortably on your cheekbones and don't go in your ears at all, so they stay in place securely.
Shokz is a great choice but it does not support Bluetooth, so if you plan to use it a bit while running or at the gym, you may check Nank. They are pretty fine for me in every aspect.
Budget - Willing to spend the less possible.
Source/Amp - My phone (a 2020 model phone, high specs, shouldn't have issues, Oppo Find X2)
How the gear will be used - My main concern is that is waterproof and also I can swim along the pool (25m) without connection cuts or distorsions. (phone would be in a bag on a bench next to one of the short sides of the pool, hence the furthest I would be is ~25 meters ).
Preferred tonal balance - I don't have special taste on this; I would like it just to listen to music, but with nice definition if possible (not radio potato quality).
Past gear experience - I have a Sony Walkman which is a headphone-mp3 for sports (and waterproof, supossedly). Back then (it has some years already) costed me about 70€, which is a high price, but I think it was worth it. For sports in general is great, althought It has had issues by swimming with it. It still works, but since it is bulky, it either unplugs while swimming or if I trap it with the swiiming cap it hurts me.
I'm now trying to "switch to the future" with my first earbuds and I see 1000 models in amazon-aliexpress... I have no idea what to get. I saw 2019's Linus tech tips 50 earbuds video but I believe it may be outdated. So I'm here asking for your recommendations and experiences about earbuds.

your best bet is probably bone conduction stuff
I also use the newer version of the Sony Walkman swimming earbuds. Bluetooth technology does not work from underwater. Anything Bluetooth is not going to work. You will have to get a wired connection to an iPod nano and they have little head bands for swimming with that setup or the Sony Walkman MP3 swim headphones
Hey folks — I swim laps at my gym pool about 3–4 times a week, and I’ve always wished I could listen to music or podcasts during my sessions to help pass the time and stay motivated. I've finally decided to look into getting some waterproof earbuds, but I have no idea where to start.
I know regular earbuds aren’t built for submersion, so I’m looking for ones that are specifically designed for swimming (not just splash-proof). Ideally, something that works well underwater, stays secure during flip turns, and sounds decent even when submerged.
So I figured I’d ask here — what are the best swimming earbuds you’ve tried? I’m open to any price range as long as they actually work well and don’t fall apart after a few sessions. Bonus points if they’re comfortable under a swim cap and don’t require me to carry around a separate MP3 player (but I’m open to those too if they’re reliable).
Any first-hand experiences, product links, or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Shockz swimpro.
I tried a cheap knockoff version and they broke within a month. The Shokz are bone conducting and have MP3 and bluetooth options. I use them exclusively (for swimming and everything else - like I wear them to watch a movie on my phone on a plane).
I don't do flip turns so can't comment on that.
Quick question, why on the plane though? It’s interesting because I am thinking about hearing the announcements, but what about the other noises and humming sound of the plane? To me the idea is to get rid of other noises, but the open concept of shoks is inviting all the other noises on the plane too
On the airplane, I wear my shokz with earplugs and the noise canceling is amazing. Keeps me from having to pack my huge Bose headphones
So I don't have to bring a second pair of headphones on my trip. :)
Bone conduction headsets are better. I use Shockz swimpro. Mp3 player is built in.
Shokz work well with me wearing a swim cap, and no issues with flip turns!
If you find that bone conduction headsets dont cut it when it comes to sound quality (which I dont) the best in ear player is the Sony NW-WS410 (or WS413). No Bluetooth, but on board MP3 player with 4Gb storage. Bluetooth doesnt work in water, so the lack of it isnt an issue for swimming, but there has been a version with it if dual use matters to you
Try the Shokz Swimpro too by all means, but I think you'll find these sound far better, I've had both.
Very happy with my underwater audio purchase game changer stream my Spotify playlists
How did you do this?
Simple go to the website and explore…
No on the buds. Bluetooth does not work under water so you get some audio when you get near the side of the pool where you left your phone and almost nothing else once you make the turn.
I tried a few cheapo versions and found this one: FJX Bone Conduction
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DH257FYV?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_9&th=1
Its been working fine for almost a year and typically gives me several hours of swimming without recharge. It has internal memory and I have about 100 songs on it. It will try and connect to your phone but you just doubletap the power button to stop that.
You do have to use the tethered ear plugs or the volume is pretty faint. You also have to figure out just the right way to wear your cap to keep them in place while not adding discomfort. Without a cap they get wonky on the turns. I am addicted to them now, especially on long snorkel swims.
Trying to decide what earbuds to get don’t know much any recommendations would be helpful, price range around 30-120$ preferably!
I went through 3 different buds before experiencing bone conduction. It’s worth the price increase!
I read somewhere that bluetooth does not work under water, do the bone conduction ones work properly ?
Edit: u/whispercricket answered my question.
They are all the same in Bluetooth mode, and they cannot work properly underwater. When choosing suitable headphones, you need to consider whether it has MP3 mode so that you can use it normally. As for swimming headphones, you need to pay attention to the waterproof level, which must be above IPX8, such as the nank headphones I am using now.
Swimming head under no you need to download songs. BT only for water walkers and such type swim. As I’m sure the other person explained.
Not quite. Bluetooth does work underwater but not far. Only 1”-1.5”. I use bone conduction headphones to Bluetooth to a miniature tablet which is clipped onto my hat. The headphones and tablet are only 1-2” apart. Works fine for me underwater and for thousands of laps
Are any of these pairs of headphones compatible with streaming services? Could I download music off Spotify? I really want a pair but having to own mp3 files is a deal breaker for me.
The openswim haedphones I purchased are mp3 player no Bluetooth so they don’t support streaming, I’d assume the openswim pros would as they support Bluetooth for running, the way I downloaded my songs from Spotify is an app called deemix
Don't get earbuds. They trap water in the ear canal and the music is muted. Instead use bone conduction IPX8 headphones available from $35+ Decent sound and they will last.
Nank Runner Diver 2 Pro last 10 months when swimming ~45 mins dailyl and 20 min Sauna at 160 - 180f.
No folder support. Can onlly move to next song and previous song. Songs play in alphabetical order.
Shockz open swim do have folder support, more features, probably slightly more durable.
Bluetooth doesn't go through water. You will have to load physical files to the device's storage.
I ended up buying the shockz openswim cause I want to be able to have playlists and shuffle and whatnot so hopefully I made the right decision!
It really changes the game. I still do some music free swims weekly, but I usually wear them.
I hear ya, I’m just sick of the music my pool plays aloud 😭
best waterproof earbuds for swimming
Key Considerations for Waterproof Earbuds:
Water Resistance Rating: Look for earbuds with an IPX7 or IPX8 rating. IPX7 can withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, while IPX8 is designed for continuous immersion beyond 1 meter.
Sound Quality: Ensure the earbuds provide good sound quality, as you want to enjoy your music while swimming. Look for models with decent bass and clarity.
Fit and Comfort: Choose earbuds that come with multiple ear tip sizes or fins to ensure a secure fit while swimming. A snug fit prevents water from entering and enhances sound quality.
Battery Life: Consider the battery life, especially if you plan on using them for long swim sessions. Look for at least 6-8 hours of playback time.
Connectivity: If you prefer wireless, ensure the Bluetooth connection is stable and has a good range. Some swimmers prefer wired options to avoid connectivity issues.
Recommendations:
AfterShokz Xtrainerz: These bone conduction headphones are IP68 rated, allowing for underwater use. They provide a comfortable fit and excellent sound quality, making them a great choice for swimmers.
Sony WF-SP900: These true wireless earbuds have an IP68 rating and offer great sound quality. They also have a built-in storage for music, allowing you to swim without needing a phone.
Swimbuds Sport: These wired earbuds are specifically designed for swimming, featuring an IPX8 rating and multiple ear tip sizes for a secure fit. They are compatible with waterproof MP3 players.
Choosing the right pair will depend on your specific needs, such as whether you prefer wired or wireless options and how important sound quality is to you while swimming.
