TL;DR
Fit and Stability
For runners, earbuds that stay securely in place are essential. The Jabra Elite Active 75t and Powerbeats Pro are frequently recommended due to their excellent fit and stability. The Powerbeats Pro, with its ear hooks, ensures they remain in place even during intense workouts [1],
[5:6]. Similarly, the Beats Fit Pro is noted for its silicone wingtips, which help keep them secure during runs
[5:1].
Bone Conduction Technology
Bone conduction headphones like the Aftershokz Aeropex are popular among runners who need to stay aware of their surroundings. These headphones don't sit inside the ear canal, making them ideal for hearing ambient noise while running outdoors [2:4],
[3:10],
[4:7]. They are also praised for comfort and durability, although the sound quality may not match traditional in-ear models
[2:8].
Sound Quality and Battery Life
The Jaybird Vista 2 is highlighted for its impressive sound quality and long battery life, making it suitable for extended runs [3:3],
[4:3]. Users appreciate its ability to stay put even during sweaty workouts, and its seamless pairing with devices
[4:4].
Water and Sweat Resistance
Sweat resistance is a critical feature for running earbuds. Models like the Sony WF-1000XM4 provide IPX4 water resistance, ensuring durability against sweat and light rain [1:2]. The Jabra Elite Active 75t also offers robust waterproofing, making them a reliable choice for runners
[3:1].
Additional Considerations
While selecting earbuds, consider additional features such as ease of connectivity with devices like iPhones and Garmin watches, as well as auto-pause functionality when removing earbuds [3]. For those who prefer not to have anything inside their ears, over-ear bone conduction models like Shokz are an alternative
[5:10]. For enhanced comfort and fit, some users recommend using Comply foam tips on compatible models
[5:12].
When I think about the perfect earbuds for running and workouts, a few key things really stand out. First off, the fit is everything. There’s nothing worse than constantly adjusting earbuds while you’re moving around. I love ones with ear hooks or adjustable tips, like the Jabra Elite Active 75t or Powerbeats Pro—they stay in place no matter how intense the workout gets. Water and sweat resistance are a must too. I’ve had earbuds die on me because I didn’t pay attention to the water resistance rating, so I now always look for something with at least an IPX4 rating. The Beats Fit Pro or Jaybird Vista 2 are solid choices for this—they’re tough enough to handle a sweaty gym session or a run in the rain. Sound quality is another big one. I need earbuds that deliver clear audio, especially when I’m trying to get into the zone. Bose Sport Earbuds and Sony WF-SP800N both give great sound, with enough bass to keep me pumped up. Battery life is always a factor too. I want something that lasts at least a few hours and has a charging case for those longer sessions. Anker Soundcore Liberty Air 2 Pro and JBL Reflect Flow are great for that. If I’m running outside, I need to hear my surroundings, so I really appreciate earbuds with transparency mode, like the AirPods Pro or Sony WF-1000XM4. They let me enjoy my music but still stay aware of what's going on around me. Lastly, touch controls and voice assistant features make life so much easier. I don’t want to fiddle with buttons when I’m in the middle of a workout, so being able to control everything with a tap or my voice is a game-changer.
When all these things come together, you get earbuds that just work. What about you? What kind of earbuds do you prefer when you’re running outdoors or working out in the gym?
So which ones are you using currently? My Plantronics ones just died on me after 8 years so I have idea what’s out there. I’m looking for exactly everything you talk about here. I’ve seen some you’ve mentioned so I’m trying to narrow it down and decide.
Right now, I mainly use Sony earbuds for my workouts. The Sony WF-1000XM4 are my go-to when I want the best sound and noise cancellation. They’re fantastic for blocking out background noise, and the sound quality is amazing—super clear with great bass. The battery life is solid too. They’re also IPX4 rated, so I can sweat or run in light rain without worrying about them.
Awesome. Thanks so much!
Have you tried open earbuds?
Yes. They seem like a great choice for outdoor activities. Whether you're hiking, running, or biking, they let you stay aware of your surroundings while still enjoying your music or podcast. In the gym, open earbuds can also be useful, allowing you to hear your music while staying aware of your environment. However, there are some downsides to consider. Open earbuds typically don't block out much sound, so they might not be ideal in noisy environments where you want to fully immerse yourself in your music. Also, the sound quality might not be as rich or deep as with closed-ear models, especially if you're in a busy area or need extra bass for motivation during a workout
Nothing ear open dont have noise cancelation but the sound is opposed to be great
Anker sport x20 are perfect if you like hooks. I also love the sound and deep bass of the Jlab epic lab edition
Hey gang. Since I started running I have ruined two pairs of wireless earbuds. One was a cheap $40 dollar pair from the Supermarkets but the others were the JLAB Airsports which were not cheap and ironically stopped working sooner than the ones from the Supermarket. I can't stand running with wired earbuds as I find them too annoying but I don't want to have to keep buying wireless ones if they're going to keep crapping out on me.
I have done my research and all the guides said Airsports were the best which obviously is not the case. Just wondering if some seasoned runners can recommend a brand that has lasted a good long while before they need replacing.
I just got a pair of the cheaper aftershox, super comfortable, I love being able to hear my surroundings. Much flatter sound than my old in ear buds, but so much better for running.
I’ve had my Aftershokz for two+ years without problems. Great headphones, plus you can hear what’s going on around you so you’re safer. They’ve helped me out many times.
Same. I love my aftershockz. I sometimes run on roads where drivers go fast and I need to hear when a car is coming. Bonus is that I often wear them while doing chores around the house because I can still hear my kids talking to me. They are fairly comfortable for several hours and the charge lasts a long time. I also feel like I would lose airpods.
Man I love mine. Even over the Airpods.
Aeropex’s have been great to me since my wife got them for me for Christmas. They’re bone conduction so you can still hear easier than in-ear and they wrap around so you don’t have to worry about them falling off.
Bone conduction headphones were a game-changer for me and I’ve recommended them to every single person I’ve met on the trail! I used the Aftershokz for a couple years but just upgraded to the more resilient and waterproof Aeropex about a month ago.
Love my Shockz as they’re water proof so I can use them for both running and swimming.
Love my Beats Pro wireless. They go around and in the ear for stability. They do not move while running and don’t even fall out when the dogs attached to your waist see a squirrel and you slide head first down the muddy sidewalk like a seal.
Love these ones, their stability is no joke fr. I've played volleyball with them on and they haven't moved even a millimeter. Only problem I've encountered is the charging can be a bit touchy but that's pretty much the case for every magnet style charger I've had
I'm starting to think I may have to bite the bullet and get these. I've tried all manner of cheap earbuds. Can't stand the ones with the wire between them (wire gets stuck on my sweaty neck. The wireless ones just do not stay in my ears while running. I'm pretty sure what I need are wireless with an ear hook, like the Pro Beats 3's.
BackBeat FIT 3150 from Plantronics. Had a pair for several years, zero problems or issues.
The quality for me has been great, you just feel them vibrating on your cheekbones if you’re sitting still sometimes. I use mine around the house more than on physical activity and it’s great because I can still listen for my dogs getting into shit, or if my wife is calling for me across the house.
Been running with regular AirPods for a while now, thinking of looking for a new pair. Any recommendations? Something that will last for 4-5+ hours on battery, connect easily to iPhone, and Garmin watch, and ideally that auto-recognizes when taking headphone off to pause and play music. Thanks in advance!!
Aftershoks are the best for running/cycling and check all boxes but the auto pause.
If iPhone connectivity for auto pause/siri is a deal breaker go with whatever the sportiest H1/2 equipped headphones are
jaybird vista 2. long battery life (survived 3+ hr long runs), stays on my ear no matter how sweaty i get, great sound quality.
Beats Fit Pro. Basically AirPods Pro but cheaper and they stay in your ears when you’re running.
Unfortunately not on every ear shape, powerbeats pro however is guaranteed to stay on ear
Powerbeats Pro has amazing fit but the only problem is that eventually after more than an year of use you will run into charging issue. Basically the magnets of the case or on headphones is not strong enough to place it in correct charging position, it could also be an issue with charging prong inside case. But either way when you place them inside your case you will find that it won't charge and your battery will drain when you take it out for use. I got mine replaced under apple warranty but the issue came after an year of use and now my warranty is expired. Replacing them cost the same as buying new.
I've had Powerbeats in the past, and they're good, but I like the more minimalist aspect of the Fit Pro. Did you ever try replacing the tips with Comply Foam tips? Wondering if that would have given you a better fit.
Always been a fan of Jabra earbuds for running. Small, light, very waterproof, and stay in ears really well. Have used 75t and Elite 4 and both are very good.
Second. The hands-free controls are intuitive and mechanical, so sweat/rain doesn’t interfere, and I’ve never had an issue with them falling out (they come with three interchangeable tip sizes)
I agree, these are great for outdoor runs where there are a lot of people around. I was skeptical at first until multiple cyclists unexpectedly passed me to my right, while running. Luckily, nothing happened but I realized how important being able to hear your surroundings is and with more people driving quieter electric cars, I think this really applies.
They are great and have considerable battery life — 6-10 hours depending on the model. They are advertising a big sale coming up. Seems like a good time to get a pair.
i have a pair of the aftershockz that wrap around the back of the head and rest on the ears and sit against the jaw bone or whatever so they don't actually go IN the ear .. but i have NO idea how to wear them comfortably while wearing a hat and/or ear warmer headband .. any solutions?
I wanted to like these but after 10 minutes the top of my ear, where the band sits, gets so irritated. Maybe it's just my weird head
Please don't bother saying "listen to the woods" or whatever.
Under $150 please.
Bluetooth. Buds. Stay in my ears.
Aeropex. For runners they are the best. Especially if your ear buds never stay in even when they advertise that they will! Only down side is sound quality but for reals I don’t notice it anymore.
Pretty stoked on my Jaybird Vistas. Jaybird has a bunch of different models, some of which come in under $150, and I’ve been impressed with the sound and battery life, plus they’re some of the only ones that stay in my ears.
Second the Vista's. They are awesome.
+1 for the vistas, even if I mostly bought them because of Luke Nelson and Madison Ostergren.
Second for Jaybird. I have been using the Jaybird Runs for a few years now. They stay in place really well and also sound good.
Oh man, I love my Jaybird Vistas. The sound quality is excellent, and they don't budge. But the nicest thing is that there's zero fuss. Even a technophobe can deal with them -- they pair immediately and seamlessly. Oh, and the battery lasts approximately forever.
I've been running with my Vistas for a year and love them. They're great, super durable, and the battery works very well.
Powerbeats. By beats they come either tethered together or singular. Have an over ear rubber part that keep them in. I like them tethered together in case I knock one out it doesn’t go flying. 15 plus hours of listen time. Can be really loud. 119$
Aeropex are my go-to. They are bone conduction so don't sit in your ear at all. Sound isn't amazing but it is surprisingly good and no issues at all with them falling out. Plus you can still hear stuff around you to a certain extent.
I have countless and Aeropex is the one I use to run. The connection to my G945 is stable.
Is there an easy way to get podcasts onto watches like yours that do music?
been loving the outdoor run workouts on Apple Fitness+, but my earbuds are letting me down, using some old AirPods, and they keep slipping out when I get sweaty, especially during intervals. It’s annoying to pause and fix them mid-run.
I’m looking for earbuds that stay secure, sound good, and pair well with my Apple Watch for those AF+ guided runs.
I’ve heard Powerbeats Pro are great for the ear hooks, but are they comfy for long runs? Or are there other options (maybe cheaper) that you swear by?
I run mostly outdoors, so sweat resistance is a must. Bonus if they have decent noise control for when I’m on busy streets.
Thanks! 😊
I cant keep anything in my ears so I use over ear bone conductives.
I love my conductive headphones for running. They stay put and they aren’t sticking in my ears so I can just click a button and hear someone if they try to talk to me.
Shokz
Was going to recommend the same one. Works perfect just paired with Apple Watch and going for a run (leaving the phone behind).
Important reason in favour of these. The don’t block your ears so you can be aware of your surroundings.
Beats Fit Pro. AirPod internals, silicone wingtips to keep them in your ears. Never fallen out for me on runs, lifts, etc.
AirPods Pro sometimes fall out of my ears, but my Beats Fit Pro always stay put.
Is that little bit that sticks into your ear uncomfortable?
I added the Comply foam tips you can get on Amazon for an even more secure fit.
Loved Comply foam tips on a different set of earbuds, though they would wear down way faster than silicon tips.
Powerbeats Pro are rock solid and comfy. Only got the originals not the next gen.
AirPods Pro with Proof Lab Wings
I’ve been grinding out mostly half-marathon training lately, and my earbuds are straight-up a nightmare once I start sweating. They either start slipping, feel mad uncomfortable, or just dip out completely after like mile 6.
I’ve tried Aftershokz in the past and loved the concept but they were pretty uncomfortable to hang around the neck. Someone in my running group recently mentioned open-ear clip-on style earbuds (I think they were using Baseus Bowie MC1, maybe?) They look good for running especially because they kinda sit above the ear rather than inside. Apparently they don’t mess with glasses either, which is a bonus.
I’m curious if anyone here’s used anything like that, clip-on and open-ear but not bone conduction. How’s the sound on busy roads? Do they stay put on when running? And are they actually comfortable for longer runs (like 10+ miles)?
Would love to hear what’s working for you all. Trying to avoid spending $$$ just to end up back on wired buds again lol.
I had the same problem with sweat getting into my ears and messing with my earbuds. I like to listen to audiobooks & podcasts, I live in the city (loud streets), and the bone conduction headphones look like they might be uncomfortable when wearing sunglasses which I usually wear. Also, I'm far too cheap to buy headphones just for running.
My simple solution was a washable running hat. The hat wicks & redirects the sweat away from my face & ears. I can wring out the sweat mid-run if I'm extra sweaty. I hand-wash it in the sink at home. And now I can wear any regular earbuds -- currently using an old pair of 1st-gen AirPods -- without issues. Did 15 miles in the heat last Saturday, no problemo.
I have the Shokz Open Air 2's and I really like them for anything outdoors (running/biking).
They take a bit of getting used to in the sense that they always feel "loose" but I've had no issues with them slipping ever and the sound is surprisingly good for an open speaker.
The biggest con is that I'd you're in a noisy area (roadways, construction, trains) you either kind of just have to take it as it is or turn them way up to hear anything. But being able to hear around you and not readjusting them makes them worth it IMO.
Agreed. Just Got mine this year. After my first run with them I fell in love. Definitely would recommend.
I have the shockz minis, prior to has air pod pros and sweat through multiple pairs but once I got these I’ll never go back to on ear ones. Sound isn’t as great but can hear everything music and surrounds. Very very nice feature I didn’t think id like as much as I do.
Shokz are awesome. Don’t slip out like the white things. Looonnnggg battery life! Can also hear the world around you. If you don’t want to hear other sounds, soft ear plugs with Shokz improves the music sound and mostly blocks out other noise. I’m on a plane right now with both. Just me and my music. Got em on sale at Sam’s for $80 during holidays.
Shokz are amazing in their latest guise. I've got open swim but great for phone less running as they have MP3 storage on-board
Does anybody have a recommendation for earbuds for running? I am specifically interested in listening to audiobooks and podcast so music isn’t a high priority. Thanks for any recommendations or suggestions!!!
I just got Shokz open ear bone conduction sport headphones and love them. They don’t actually go in your ear which I like and the sound clarity is great. You can also still hear what’s going on around you, so safer. This is after years of running with ear buds. For me, they stay in place better as well.
So I literally was on the same boat. Needed a good pair of something for the long run. I bought a pair of PowerBeats Pro. I sweat a lot so I was sure something around the ear was needed but with the sweat that it wouldn't slip into my ears and get uncomfortable. They sound amazing and fit in comfy even with the sweat. I ran the marathon and they did great for the entire run. Good luck out there!
These are the only ones that stay in my ears.
Yeah I've gone through so many headphones and as soon as the sweat begins they start slipping into my ears and it just pisses me off haha. But these bad boys stay in the perfect range. Great buy!
Yep, these are the best, dont fall out, sound great, super comofortable, and can still hear pretty well around you.
These are the $hit
yeah dude these headphones slap. Worth the $ for sure.
Second this
Shokz is the correct answer. I've probably destroyed ten different pairs of earbuds with corrosion on charging terminals over the past two years. My Shokz are yet to miss a beat over the past 6 months, and they are safer since you can hear area sounds.
I’m still running on AirPods. Have been working great so far with transparency mode.
Shokz. Better and safer than regular ear buds.
There’s really an abundance of cheap Bluetooth earbuds for running with many that either don’t sound great and/or break easily. Does anyone have suggestions for some decent priced quality earbuds? Thank you in advanced.
I love my Bose Soundsport wireless headphones! I get really sweaty and they don’t slide out! Also keep a long charge
Yeah. My AirPods with these make for great headphones while working out.
Plantronics Backbeat Fit.
Only headphones that have actually lasted through sweat and rain. They also let in some outside sound so you can be aware of your surroundings.
I love my backbeats. They fit comfortably, let some ambient sound through but are plenty loud and not tinny, charge quickly and last several hours on a charge, they don't fall off, I can take calls, pause/play and adjust volume up and down easily. The microphone sounds tinny to the other person on the call but I rarely use it for calls.
The 3200's are nice. I have a pair of the older ones but they dropped in and out with my watch, the 3200's use the newer system where each earbud listens in separately instead of connecting to each other. They work great, I very rarely get any dropouts, they are comfortable and the feature to pipe in external sound is..ok/decent.
If you really want ambient sound then I'd get the 3150's instead, they let it in acoustically instead of playing it from a mic.
This. I got a pair of Aftershokz aeropex about two weeks ago. Great battery life and I love being able to hear what’s going on around me.
Bose Soundsport. I love them, long battery life, and stay in place.
Completely agree. Trekz Air by Aftershokz is the way to go for runners
Same, never had an issue with them falling out. They are great as you can hear the world around you.
Strangely enough, I find AirPods pro really unstable and I have to keep poking them back in!
For road use, this or nothing.
For treadmills I have a cheap set of Anker ones I use to blast music.
How do they hold up for heavy sweating? Any intermittent sound when they get wet?
+1 on airpods - I've been (mostly trail) running in them rain or shine for a year and a half - sometimes I just wear just one if I feel I need to hear what's going on (mostly I listen to podcasts). They're great.
Dear users,
I am a frequent runner and ran for a while with the Jabra Élite active 7. I choose them because i prefer earbuds and because i thought they had the best ANC. Unfortunately they died on me, and I found out jabra stopt production. Hence it is difficult to find a pair.
So that is why I am searching for a new pair. With the following requirements:
Let me make another recommendation for Shokz. You can still hear your environment which is crucial when running outside, the sound quality is honestly good and battery lasts forever. They come in waterproof versions too.
I used Shokz for years. I run a lot of streets so having the ability to hear my environment is super important. Plus the battery life and quality is pretty great. Some louder noises on the street will get through but they can easily pause until it passes.
Third this, went from Jabbras, which are amazing, to Shokz and never looked back. For running, there is nothing better IMO.
Second this. I’ve been an AirPods wearer for years, recently bought the new Shokz. Great product.
I switched from buds to Shokz pro 2, absolutely love them, very comfy, last a long time, decent enough sound, and can hear things around you
I recently purchased shockz open fit and they are a game changer for my road running!
I’ve had really good luck with my Beats Fit Pro earbuds. 2+years running in the same pair and they have held up to my HEAVY SWEATING and still maintain decent battery life and sound after years.
My beats fit pros went through wash and are still going strong. I like the option of transparency and still being able to switch to noise canceling. The 5 minute quick charge saved me more than once when I didn’t get them seated.
They seem to hurt my ears if I wear them for more than an hour, not sure if I wear them wrong or if the earbuds just don't fit my ears well
Yep! 5 years of HEAVY use over here and the sound quality and battery life are mind blowing after all this time. I'm talking like, 12 hours of USEAGE without charging. Remarkable.
IME you will constantly replace earbuds. I finally went to Shokz and haven't looked back.
Yes, the sound quality isn't the best. But they excel everywhere else
I have the Elite 8 Active. If you liked the 7 just upgrade to 8.
I love them. Never any issues.
I LOVE listening to music but my gen 2 Airpods are starting to give up, i don’t care as much for noise cancelation, i’m just looking for a pair of headphones that i can run in and that will still look good/stylish on a normal day.
Edit: MOST of my usage is at home or biking to uni, but i want some esrbuds that I can also trust on a trail, mostly something that won’t fall off.
I bought Shokz Openrun Pro 2 after a reddit thread like this bullied me into it. They’re far too quiet to cope with urban noise but perfect on trails - like, proper gamechanger, what was I doing with normal earbuds. Might not be for everyone. You can try them out in many running shops
I use my Open Run Pro for everything but the loudest environments. On the trails certainly, but they work fine for work calls in my office, while driving etc. they do have a volume boost setting I use sometimes if ambient noise is high. Love for trails because some of the stuff I run on also has mountain bikers and it pays to be able to hear them coming and still listen to my audio books lol.
I use beats fit pro. The wing on one of them broke, I just superglued it back in place and I’m more careful how I get them out of the case now! They have awareness mode or noise cancelling mode, it’s very easy to change between the two. The sound is good (to me) and I think they’re fairly normal looking too.
Also love Beats Fit Pro for running
+1 I love my beats fit pro.
Jabra elite actives
I love my Jabra elite actives. Also if you like music with heavy bass these absolutely rip. Also they’ve never fallen out of my ears while being active - they actually turn off when they’re almost accidentally wiggled loose after a long intense training sesh. Highly recommend these!
Wow I have the Elite 8 Active Gen 2 and I hate them. The left one always wants to fall out. I hate that the default is hear-through and I have to change it in the app every day.
For running I've switched to clip-ons because they are open and therefore don't produce that "thudding" sound on every step. Currently the Soundcore C40.
Haven't tried that model but I love my soundcore headphones, sport x10
Right, my advice was based on which sub it was in ;)
Had no issues with my Bose SoundSport for years (except not being able to hear anything - only used one ear on trails)
I don't use them often, but I like shokz. Being able to hear what's going on is essential for me.
Bass is low, maybe you dislike then if music is your priority
