Best Ways to Farm Runes in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Explore and Progress Naturally

Many players suggest that instead of focusing on farming runes, you should explore the game world and progress naturally through the content. By doing so, you'll gain experience, find new items, and earn plenty of runes without the need for dedicated farming sessions. This approach not only helps you level up but also enriches your gameplay experience [1:1], [2:1], [2:2].

Specific Farming Locations

For those who prefer specific farming spots, several locations have been recommended. One popular spot is Dragonbarrow in Caelid, where you can farm runes by luring giant metal balls off cliffs near Lenne's Rise. Each ball grants nearly 2000 runes, making it an efficient farming method [2:3]. Additionally, completing Varre's questline or exploring other high-yield areas like Siofra can be beneficial [1:2].

Utilize Rune Boosting Items

To maximize rune gains, remember to equip rune-boosting talismans or use consumables like the Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot. These items increase the number of runes you receive from enemies, making your farming efforts more rewarding [2:5].

Bosses and High-Level Enemies

Defeating bosses and high-level enemies is another effective way to earn runes. While these encounters can be challenging, they often yield significant rewards. Players have noted that certain bosses drop runes more frequently, and engaging in these battles can be a lucrative strategy [3:1], [5:2].

Crafting and Trading

If you're looking to craft specific items or trade runes, consider selling or trading unwanted items and runes at merchants or with other players. This approach allows you to acquire the resources you need while clearing out inventory space [3:3], [4:1].

By combining exploration with strategic farming and utilizing rune-boosting items, you can efficiently gather runes while enjoying the diverse experiences Elden Ring has to offer.

ORIGINAL POST

Hello everyone, Im maybe late but Im a basically new player and I need help with rune farm. Im currently around 51 level and I think Im too low to enter castle that guards the Erdtree based on what damage I receive and damage I give. I decided to farm some runes but most of rune farm on youtube that I find are bad or don’t function and I realy need help with this

Thanks in advance.

Id suggest not to worry about farming and go explore somewhere else instead, liurnia leads to many places, you always have hell caelid, siofra, etc

But if you really want to farm, then either do varres quest or go to dragonbarrow (remember to equip the rune talisman)

Also, remember to lvl up your weapons as some enemies will hit hard regarless of your char lvl

In every souls game I found it helps to get the health set to level 20 right away and then based on the game 40 50 or 60, elden ring expects you to be at 60 for most bosses, the sooner you get there the more mistakes you can make and learn during a fight instead of a run back.

You have a lot to do, and you will get much more enjoyment out of exploring different areas and dungeons, finding new items, weapons, etc. And that will be as effective or more effective than farming for runes, especially since you'll have to get to an area to farm runes from in the first place.

Explore all the regions you have access to so far.

Don't farm. It's boring and the game has better ways to get runes. Just go explore in any random direction and don't forget to save in every site of grace you find so you can easily collect any lost runes. Don't rush to beat the next boss. The game is huge and there's plenty of places to explore, which will level you up naturally without any grind / farming.

Go to Caelid, east of Limgrave. Hop over a chasm into Dragonbarrow. Follow the coast road east (do not try to fight anything) until you eventually find a tower called Lenne's Rise. Rest at the grace there.

As you will notice approaching it, giant metal balls will spawn to try to roll over you. If you position yourself right, you can get the ball to roll off the cliff, giving you just under 2000 runes. Rest and repeat.

Started playing again this week after stopping shortly after release due to time constraints and I’m having a great time however I am getting to the point where I want to craft Shroud… what’s the best way to farm runes? It seems pretty ridiculous how hard they are to get in quantity.

Pits, ENMDs, whispers and world boss all have a chance of dropping tribute of harmonies. They're pretty common if you just play the game. Once you have some go to the jeweler 3 of the same magic runes can be rerolled to rare runes. Rare runes can be rerolled to rare or legendary. Legendary can be rerolled to other legendary. Bosses also drop runes, all tributes runs drop a rune too. It's just a matter of playing the game you can get them in time.

you probably have grand gems that you don't use? they go for similar price as runes, so you can sell/trade those off.

Other than that, this season seems spread out between classes and which runes they use so actually trading legendary for other legendary works better than previous seasons imo.

Of course selling some item for big money and just purchasing runes above market rate instantly :D

I got the all the runes for the 4 mythics i wanted eventually. But ive been playing alot since season start since im on holidays. Most of mine from t4 undercity with the rune tribute. And a couple from bosses. Kept gambling at the jeweler for a some as well. Its a massive grind without trading

1 upvotes on reddit
Dead_On_ArrivalAgain · 2 months ago

Rune tribute run in undercity, bosses, wispers. Rare and blue runes from wanted mythics you can sell. Buy what u want after. For example a TON blue runes can go up to 200m each. So, don’t gamble ur runes blindly.

1 upvotes on reddit
adnea00 · 2 months ago

I’d say Lair bosses are the best rune farming in my experience. Over and over. You can either consolidate all your magic and rare runes at the jeweller (minus the ones you need to craft ofc) but by far the best way is to sell the ones you don’t need to buy the ones you do (sad but true).

I'm being insanely strict and selling anything that isn't 6*/legend/5 or more speed using the "sell selected/exclusion" settings.

Even then, if that rune's speed stat doesn't roll at least twice where I can throw blue grinds at it to make it an okay placeholder for the time being (3/4 times, optimally), it gets sold.

I'm just that sick of being outsped.

I don't know if this advice is good for you, because we are likely at different stages of the game and I'm being annoyingly strict. But there ya go.

2 upvotes on reddit
itsBondo · OP · 6 months ago

I appreciate that advice. I’m trying to at least keep runes that have speed even if it doesn’t roll and have at least one desirable sub stat roll multiple times. I legit just started again so only like 2 months in and working on my solo r5 teams

1 upvotes on reddit
jamesyongwp · 6 months ago

There is no short answer. This is a very common question for this game since the beginning of time.

Without going into every specific rune set and details - look for efficiency in the runes you keep. Your efficiency baseline for early game is going to be different to mine, at late game. Get familiar with the min and max rolls (e.g. 4 to 6 for speed, 5% - 8% for HP%)

The score on the rune does help but you kinda need to roll it to +12 to really get the full picture.

Aside from efficiency, runes that get high doubles or triple rolls are gonna be useful. E.g. 24% hp (double max roll HP%) or 18 speed (double max roll speed) are definitely useful at your stage.

There are also tons of youtube videos done in the past (some are over an hour long) attempting to answer this question. You could get some insights in those videos if you have the interest.

Runes and how they drop, a question

Posted by shaxxsdad · in r/diablo4 · 7 months ago

Do any runes drop from any activity? Or do specific runes drop at specific bosses/activities?

I just got the dlc and unlocked rune crafting. Saw online that bosses are a good tune farm, but was curious what the deal was with these things

Also do higher world tiers (torment 1-4) yield different / more powerful runes or rate of drops ?

Runes have a chance to drop during any activity. But the higher the monster is (elite, boss, etc.) the higher the chance it will drop a rune. You get more runes at higher difficulty levels.

Honestly, I have been just killing enemies outside cerrigar while doing some testing, and noticed alot of runes dropping in a fairly short period of time.

Lair Bosses like Duriel drop them often though. So joining groups via party finder just burning mats is a decent way to get a bunch too.

What about legendary Runes / does torment level matter?

1 upvotes on reddit

It's all just random. Higher Torment only really affects mythic drop chance slight, and by volume of loot also technically more chances to see them and GAs. But I don't think that affects rune drops.

I think you can get Rune caches from the Lunar event. Other than that, you can try under city runs with the rune tribute, head hunts drop a good amount and T4 ladder bosses drop runes.

Yes, in T4 you will get more legendary runes, and they drop most often from the Ladder bosses.

As for getting a specific rune it’s tricky, or basically impossible since both drops and crafting is random.

World bosses, ladder bosses, and whisper caches seem to drop them most often, but they can drop pretty much anywhere, as far as I know.

Headrotten in which tides drop runes all over the place just farming whispers and the boss.

Between that and the extra cache from the tree every ten whispers, it's probably the quickest way to get runes.

Your best bet for a starless is to just craft mythic caches and do whispers for the mythic tribute offering.

There's the bird one from the ridge by lake of blood that nets around 17.5k a pop and easy to get a couple million in an hour. I got bored of it in about 15 minutes and just decided to play. Currently around level 167.

Complete the whit faced Varre side quest or alternatively play more through the game to get to Ranni's quest line and you can reach that section later in the game.

I pretty much explored all of limgrave & weeping peninsula to grind before dealing with margit.

Don't forget to use your ash summon on the fight, you can find the lady that upgrades them at the stormhill shack site of grace. Compete here quest and she'll move to the round table, once there exhaust her & the blacksmiths dialog and shell move from the fire place to by him and be ready to upgrade.

Ahh. Have you been to dragon barrow then? Specifically the part with the black blade kindred? It’s called the bestial sanctum.

You can get there by going through a wayportal at the right edge of the water just above the third church of marika, located north of the minor erdtree in mist wood.

Obviously don’t challenge the black blade it’s way too tough at this point(you’d actually be better off going south to a grace site next to a bridge).

You’ll notice there’s a bunch of tiny people hanging around. When they die they each give about 1000 runes a piece. 1300 if you have the gold scarab talisman. Be wary though, cuz they have high damaging attacks(but their health pools should be relatively manageable).

If you use incantations, definitely get the lightning spear. They seem to be most weak to lightning damage. Get the hang of taking them down, and it’s a solid rune farm for the early game.

Bro, Just use the primeval halls for runes Like, just use 60 battle skip tickets on any element halls per week can give upto 6 guaranteed runes and if luck assures, gives upto extra 3 to 5 runes ,but not the specific rune you need (I too use this strategy bro) This is for efficient rune gathering for f2p players If you can ,gather as many battle skip ticket and start grinding at any hall in primeval hall

This is the only efficient method for rune gathering, Others are events which gmcan give runes for tokens but for all months ,this is best

What’s the best way to farm the most runes? I can get 10,000 to 15,000 runes per go without doing much but wonder if there is a better way

  • I go to the smouldering wall in Caelid, and on torrent I run through the giant dogs and wait in front of the white one til he howls. When all 3 dogs start chasing I lead them through the soldiers in fort Gael. Then I lose them by jumping onto the side ledge and watch them kill each other and the pick up all the items afterwards. You can also call on spirit ashes to help speed up the process.

Also, if you get tired of doing that, if you take a cheap bow and some arrow, that big ass bird on the ledge below you right next to the Grace sit. If you shoot it, it'll just run off the cliff and give you about 12k runes as well.

You could repeatedly parkour up that one cliff in Mohgwyn Palace and jump off the map and spam attack while falling infinitely on your horse and then get like hundreds of thousands of runes instantly.

But it's only effective once you practice and master the horse parkour a few times.

I think this is still a thing... You'll probably see messages by the tree and on this cliffs. Follow the blood stains up the cliff and off the edge. Once you jump off, keep attacking until you get the runes and then teleport back quickly once you get them. (Otherwise u die from falling too far)

Through Varre's quest you can get to Mohgwyn Palace very early (whatever level it takes for you to beat Margit and Godrick).

From Palace Approach grace, shooting the bird nets 11k runes (more if you're using rune buffs, and double in NG+). It's more effective than farming the frog bois, at least until you get Sacred Relic (Waves of Gold will melt them all with a single button press, but you have to meet the faith requirement to use it).

But nothing beats item duplication. You can spend an afternoon with a friend (or using a second console by yourself like I do) and duplicate a Lord's Rune until you max out your inventory and sort chest.

Best way to farm runes in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Key Considerations for Farming Runes in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

  1. Location Selection:

    • Best Areas: Focus on high-density enemy areas with good rune drops. Popular spots include:
      • Caelid: The Smoldering Wall and the Swamp of Aeonia.
      • Leyndell, Royal Capital: Offers high-level enemies with substantial rune rewards.
      • Mountaintops of the Giants: Great for farming tougher enemies.
  2. Enemy Types:

    • Target enemies that yield high runes per kill. For example, mini-bosses and larger enemies often provide more runes than standard foes.
  3. Rune-Boosting Items:

    • Equip items like the Gold Scarab Talisman, which increases rune acquisition by 20%.
    • Use Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot for a temporary boost to rune gains.
  4. Co-op Play:

    • Consider summoning friends or using the Furlcalling Finger Remedy to summon players for co-op. This can help you tackle tougher enemies more efficiently.
  5. Efficient Routes:

    • Create a farming route that allows you to clear enemies quickly and return to a Site of Grace to respawn them. This maximizes your rune collection per hour.
  6. Use of Spirit Ashes:

    • Summon Spirit Ashes to help distract and defeat enemies, allowing you to farm more efficiently without taking damage.

Recommendation: For optimal rune farming, consider the Caelid area for its high-density enemies and the Gold Scarab Talisman for increased rune gains. Establish a farming route that allows you to clear enemies quickly and return to a Site of Grace to reset them. This strategy will maximize your efficiency and rune collection.
