TL;DR
Exploration and Scadutree Fragments
Exploring every nook and cranny of the game world is crucial for leveling up efficiently. Players recommend activating summoning pools, engaging with optional bosses, and exploring caves and dungeons [5:1]
[5:3]. Additionally, collecting Scadutree Fragments is vital as they significantly boost your stats, making it easier to tackle the DLC's challenging content
[1:6]
[3:1].
Weapon and Spirit Summon Upgrades
Upgrading your weapons and spirit summons can make a substantial difference in your gameplay experience. Investing runes in smithing stones to level up multiple weapons is recommended, especially since one build can support various weapon types [2:1]
[3:2]. This approach allows for greater versatility and preparedness against different enemies and bosses.
Rune Farming Techniques
For those looking to farm runes quickly, completing Varre's quest line is suggested as it grants access to one of the best rune farming spots in the game [5:5]. This method can help players accumulate runes without repetitive grinding, allowing them to focus on enjoying the game's exploration and combat elements.
Level Recommendations and Build Focus
While levels are important, focusing on your Scadutree blessing level is equally crucial [4:1]. Players have completed the DLC at various levels, ranging from 118 to 200, emphasizing that strategic use of Scadutree Fragments can compensate for lower character levels
[4:3]
[4:4]. It's also advised to concentrate on specific builds, such as faith/strength or strength/dexterity, to maximize effectiveness
[1:3]
[1:11].
By following these strategies, players can enhance their experience in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, ensuring they are well-prepared for its challenges while enjoying the rich exploration and combat mechanics.
Finally beat the game after 2 years of playing (i gave up once and took a year hiatus lol). After many wipes and painful resets back to radagon, I guess I'm elden lord. Bought shadow of the erdtree with no hesitation. Am I going to have to do a lot of leveling? What should I be careful not to miss as I head into the land of shadow? How should i level if I wish to remain a strength faith build with blasphemous blade? See below my current level
Do not neglect collecting scadutree fragments. They make a lot of difference.
Id say get up to level 3-6 before fighting a boss, i tried fighting some of them without leveling it at all and got my ass handed to me. It will steadily increase your damage and damage reduction which youll need for the dlc
Thanks, you probably just saved me hours' time
I want to add that they're not gonna "break the game" like some people say, they balance it, DLC's bosses are very strong
Oh, trust me, I'm gonna need them anyway cause I'm severe ADHD which means I can't focus enough to time how I dodge attacks, lol. I'm gonna need these like water, lol🤣
Basically this. Ive seen people go into the dlc and refuse to get them because they think itll make them overpowered, and ive seen people not get them because they think they wont make much difference. Both are incorrect, and youre meant to find and use them
You really need to pick a weapon or build and put your stats into it, like going faith/str or str/dex is fine but you’ve got everything so spread out.
Also collect the god damn scadutree fragments or prepare for hell.
I was thinking the same thing. You gotta have at least a 60 on one of the stats and stick to a build
For blasphemous blade should I lean more into faith?
You beat the game before me...I am in a similar boat but I went to the dlc area because I beat the mohglester haven't completed the dlc either...another hiatus cause I went back to ds3 cause of nameless (I have beaten ds3 but not dlcs)
Your stats are way too spread out.
Your level should be fine for the entirety of SotE, though you'll probably gain a bunch as you play through it.
Make sure to use the Scadutree Fragments you find, which will multiply all of your offenses and defenses by a percentage while in the Lands of Shadow.
Saved up that many back in 2022 in preparation for the DLC. I was kinda disappointed that I couldn't use them to level up in the DLC.
Given I finally want to start my playthrough for SOTE, I thought I'd ask for advice on how to spend them. Any ideas are appreciated, but I have to say that I don't want to overlevel myself since that character is already at 150.
I (personally) would still use them to level up, because of the DLCs „separate“ leveling system and sheer difficulty. Leveling also allows for more build variety which is always fun, and trust me, you wont feel „overleveled“, 1 million runes is less than you think!
Got a question about that: If I pump my runes into Vigor or Endurance, will I still enter the DLC world with these level-ups? Or will I have them somehow "reduced" to how they were when I first started the game?
No, you still keep all your stats. It‘s just that there‘s a separate „scadutree blessing“ level, which you can increase by finding scadutree fragments on the map, and this level increases your stats a LOT (goes until lv 20, where it will have nearly doubled your stats) and these are basically required to beat the DLC.
The classic way to use them when not blowing them on levels is to buy smithing stones and level up new weapons. By the time you've beaten Godskin Duo, you have the ability to acquire every smithing stone bell bearing in the game, so you might as well take advantage.
One build is not constrained to one weapon. Off one set of stats, you could easily have two dozen weapons at your disposal, and leveling up multiple weapons to +24 or +9 Somber ain't cheap -- you'll blow through that million and more in a flash.
That's actually a great tip, thanks. My character already completed the base game, anyway. But then again, levelling all these weapons for potential builds doesn't really net me any benefit if I don't have the stats for them, right?
But you do have the stats for them! One build is able to run several dozen weapons.
Take what I usually run on pure strength. Sure, I've got myself the classic Heavy Claymore, Heavy Nightrider Glaive, Heavy Greatsword, your 'two handed' options, but I'm also running a pair of Heavy Beastman's Curved, Star Fists, a Morning Star or a Broadsword to pair with a shield, Beast Claws, Cleanrot Knight Sword, and more. I don't just keep one of each weapon type either, I usually have five halberds with different ashes and movesets at the ready -- the difference in how a 'poke' halberd like Banished Knight is different from a 'chop' halberd like Nightrider is enough to justify having both for different situations.
Not to mention the Sombers. Pair of Red Bear Claws, Greatsword of Sollitude, Dragon Halberd, and more.
Then you add a little faith and the options get even larger. I usually run 54/25 or something along those lines, of which there are about 14 different str/faith Sombers in the base game that match a str/faith stat distribution, and a few more in the DLC.
Whatever your one stat is, I'm willing to be there's over 50 valid weapons that would work well with that one build. Infusions are flexible like that, and every spec has some special Sombers for it on top of that.
Can confirm. Was so annoyed that I always had to run back to buy stones when trying a new weapon. So I went playing and came back to roundtable when I had like 1.5 mill and bought 99 of most stones.
Stones ain't cheap.
Buy some stones and level up a bunch of weapons. You’re going to need it.
Buy crab
Invest in a time share
Going to finally get some time aside to beat the dlc. The questions I have though are,
Basically what the other comment has said. imo it's harder than Old Hunters on base ng, assuming you're going in solo melee. Roughly the same in difficulty on max ng+ cycle.
Get the best spirit summons (look these up) and level them up. There are more than a few dragons and deathrite birds that you're better off just summoning and getting it over with.
Unless you're checking a guide you're bound to miss a lot of stuff, especially the character quests. Don't fret too much over them.
So he's not going in solo melee if he summons
1+2: Beat the base game for the best start in it. Around 120-150 would be pretty good.
3: Whatever you like, bring in whatever. You can go back to the base game at any time.
4: Probably.
5: Collect Scadutree Fragments to increase your damage and defenses. This is how you actually get strong enough to take on the DLC. If you do not, no matter what level you are, you're gonna get ground to dust.
I bet you someone out there has beaten the dlc without the fragments. There has to be lol.
Anything you can think of, it’s been done lol. These games are challenge run heavens
So I’m still playing Shadow of the Erdtree, haven’t beat it and I’m currently on Messmer. I’m level 126 and I think I’m pretty good shadow level too or whatever they call it. I’m completely getting my butt handed to me now by everything past the moon knight lady, and I’d ask yall what level yall were when playing the dlc. Should I level past 150 even though I don’t want to? I don’t need a “play how you want” answer either, no offense. I know what matchmaking does past level 150.
I went into the DLC at like 150ish. I think I beat Messmer at around level 190.
By the time I defeated the DLC final boss, I was level 200. Honestly, levels don't nearly matter as much. You can beat the DLC at your current level but you need to level up your Scadutree blessing.
Pretty much this, level doesn't matter nearly as much as scadu level. Messmer is a pretty fair boss, so you need to pretty much just focus on learning his moves.
Yes gameplay wise, Snake Boy is definitely one of the most fun bosses in the game. I had a blast learning his moveset.
Okay thank you
My first time doing the DLC I was 138 in NG+ or maybe NG++. You do not get massive increases in power for continuing past 150, you mostly just remove the concept of builds because you have everything. A level 800 is probably like 20% stronger than a level 138.
My first completion, my dude was at 150.
My third full completion was at 118.
I have done partial completions on various characters, but I never finished it on anyone lower than that. I suppose the furthest I went on the lowest character might have been my level 70 who got to Enir Ilim to pick up Euporia, or my level 30 who knocked out Rakshasa (I really wanted her katana). However, both those completions came long after my third completion.
...Oh my gosh, I should go pick up the Falx on my level 30, those are perfect weapons for her. But now I can't remember my quest progress on her.
Ok thanks
If you just explore the world you should never have yo worry about being under leveled. The most important thing is to upgrade your weapons
If you are farming the same enemies over and over it gets tiring really fast. Just exploring all areas, caves and dungeons and doing all optional bosses will give you more than enough levels
Quite the opposite for me- leveling up is pretty consistent and fast in this game- I was often over leveled most of the game just for fully exploring- towards lategame it evens out pretty good. Extraordinarily I feel like they got the leveling pace perfect in this game.
If you’ve beaten Godrick you can do Varres quest line to access the best tune farming spot in the game
literally explore everything - every nook & cranny, every cave, tunnel, dungeon, etc. activate all of the summoning pools and throw out the effigy to be summoned to help people. activate the hunter ring to be summoned as a hunter. if you do these things you will level up quickly and never need to farm for runes.
Second this - just check every corner and it’ll come naturally
Starting from square one! I get too nervous to attack the big enemies because of how low level everything I have is. What’re some ways to really get to know the game without completely being annihilated everywhere I go?
The entirety of Limgrave is pretty starter-friendly, with the exception of some of the big field bosses who look like they're going to be too much for you.
My advice would be to explore, explore, explore. Fight what you can, and learn from the things that kill you.
Thank you! <3
Run around, get runes, die a lot, retrieve your runes before you die again, and level up at a grace site as soon as you have enough runes to do so. This will make you stronger, you can explore more, and explore making your character how you see fit. Don’t worry about min/maxing, just play however you want :)
Also, I still die frequently, and sometimes many times in a row so that will likely not change :P
Awesome! Thank you so much!!! That makes me feel better! I kinda knew a big thing of this game would have to be patience and trial and error! Lol
you gonna die alot, and you gonna lose runes sometimes, but when you have nothing to lose, then you can run for the loots and die, then you dont need to run back XD
there are lots of site of grace in the big areas of the game, find 2sites, then clear everything in between them in multiple runs if there is a big area, i have many hours in the game, but still some areas need to be cleared in like 4 runs cuz there are multiple levels and routes, i clear one and rest, then clear another route back to the other site, its always safe to rest and replenish consumables , and dont rush, just enjoy every step. hf.
There's an area near the "impassable bridge", where giant dogs and soldiers are fighting each other. You get all the runes when they kill each other. There will be some survivors still left, just kill them, and you can get thousands of runes in 10 minutes without fighting too much. There's also 2 giant birds near by worth thousands of runes. A site of grace is nearby, and you can keep reloading it and farming if you want.
When you level up enough, and can kill giants fast, there's 8 giants close to each other in stormhill that are worth a thousand runes each, and it's about 10,000 runes in 10 minutes. Just go to nearby site of grace and reload it, and farm it.
Eventually, you'll get to the bird farm, where you can get 13,000 runes a minute if you're good enough....and that's what helped me max out.
Also, get the golden scarab from abandoned cave in Caelida, it's a talisman that helps you collect more runes.
Wow!!! Thank you so much proper! <3 I’m gonna check it out!!
Around the world you can find these cemeteries with runes in them and they scale from rune[1] to rune[13] unless you find an orange one. If you use these tunes you will get a specific amount of money e.g rune[1] gives 200. Hope you can understand this and good luck
You dont need levels you need to git gud
I’m so used to elder scrolls so it’s so much different to me
Same here, just started this game and it's so hard compared to like skyrim
Probably lol
I’ve been playing Elden Ring for the past week or so and noticed I’m underleveled for a lot of areas. Is this normal?
There are some areas that are accessible really early that you'll definitely be underleveled for. They kinda want to softly funnel you into areas that are appropriate for your level with that. It could also be that you're not doing a lot of side dungeons to level up and could just be underleveled in general.
as with most games the further away from the starter area you get the stronger the enemies. when ppl say "it's sn open world, so just go somewhere else" they forget to mention that most the time.
the fact that you csn just stumble straight into Calid doesn't help either. that's more of a early midgame area.
If you stick in the starter areas limgrave, east-limgrave and weeping peninsula you should be fine even at low leveld
Yeah pretty normal if you just explore randomly and end up at like Caelid too early.
You can always explore somewhere else and come back, that's the thing with this game.
Yeah this is just traditional rpg stuff. If you seem underleveled you should see if there’s another path or area you haven’t explored.
Tbh souls are pretty light in the actual stat leveling. Pick the weapon you want and level to the requirements. Then all you have to do is keep leveling health/stamina until you decide to change things up.
Upgrading your weapons at a blacksmith will always be way more useful than leveling the scaling stat. Scaling is so random I’ve played ds 1 & 3 bloodborne and ER yet I still doesn’t seem like I can get significant results lol
I just beat the story and I’m at level 60. Lune and Monoco’s end quests are still tough to beat. I’ve tried the endless tower but it’s also tough and the dark shores still say danger. Any recommended places to level up?

Good game to you
I would personally recommend going to Frozen Hearts, and farming weapon upgrade materials.
There is an ice golem, a bit deeper into the map , near one of the expedition flags. You can repeatedly beat it up and it will always drop high tier weapon upgrade material.
Once you have level 28-32 weapons, you can start exploring higher level zones , and beat up some tougher bosses, which will then get you better Pictos and then you will be pretty much set.
Dark Shores. Set Lune up as a nuker. Cheater + Elemental trick + elemental genesis should do it. Just slap on all the damage boosting pictos you have. You could also put first strike on Sciel and have her boost the damage of lune.
or go and do all the other side stuff. Collect pictos. you'll gain levels and lumina and weapons doing this.
frozen hearts
Dark shores - it may say danger but it has one type of enemies, easy to parry ~800k per fight, ~1kk if you don't take damage. I leveled around 20 levels there probably.
After that - Renoir's drafts is the place to go.
Ok so I’ve been playing this like a souls game and prioritising levelling whatever stats work for my favourite weapons, plus putting a bit into other stats where they don’t scale.
But I read an article which looked like they are suggesting pumping pretty much EVERYTHING into one or two stats as a priority
I’ve also seen people on Reddit saying stats don’t matter as much as pictos/lumina/weapons, especially late game
I know I can recoat fairly often (I’ve just reached old lumiere fyi and I’m ~32 across the board), but curious on how everyone else is approaching this?
All stats have diminishing returns except Defense. All stats eventually get eclipsed by the bonuses from Pictos, but they are still helpful in the early game and for attack power scaling in the late gate.
Me? I dumped everything into Defense until it was 99 at the start. I wish I had done a 1:2 split with Vitality instead, but it was fine when I threw some Health Pictos on people. I did have some funny moments with major bosses only doing 50 damage to me per hit, but eventually your Defense stops rising and you stop easily finding Defense pictos, so you hit a sort of soft cap while the enemies keep hitting harder.
As an interesting note, if you hyper focus your attributes and DO NOT use a Picto to support your weaknesses, you can end up with something funny like 5,000+ Speed but base Health, or 11,000 Health but base Speed. :P
You’ll likely end up maxing the 2 stats for whichever weapon you take to lvl 33 for each character, then whatever you need into luck to get to 100% crit with your endgame picto setup, and the rest into might.
Anything else is just handicapping the character’s potential. Build however you want of course. I haven’t encountered a fight where extra vitality or defense would have been beneficial since first run Act 2.
Before Act 3, stat-scaling for weapons is not very good, and you are damage capped anyway. Better to guarantee 100% crit or max out Agility (Or Health, if you get hit a lot).
In act 3, dump 99 on both weapon stats, fill with whatever you want, more agility, more crit, more HP, whichever.
Let's go over this :
- You can recoat a fairly high number of time, I think I did it about 10 times per character over the course of one playthrough.
- The more you approach the endgame, the more the luminas/pictos are indeed gonna be more important (up until a certain point) than the weapons.
Weapons unique effects are really useful to set up specific builds (especially on more complex characters like Sciel, Lune or Monoco) but some Luminas are simply must have.
- Regarding stats, I came from a Souls background as well and did a similar approach to yours. However, this game usually prioritizes min maxing, especially since there is a cap to the number of levels you might get.
Thus it is more often than not preferable to min max your stats to go in accordance to your wepaon. I know I maxed the main stat of my equipped weapons, then used the remaining points between the secondary stat and the "Strength" stat.
EDIT : Also the pictos equipped gives some raw stats, a lot of stats actually the higher their level are, so for instance on a character with a Defense / Agility scaling weapon you can still get a looooot of crits out of the equipped pictos :)
That makes sense, thank you. Min/maxing was a term I completely forgot when I was writing the post! And I also regularly forget about the other bonuses from pictos as more often than not I’m scanning the lumina list which doesn’t give the bonuses afaik but I need to pay more attention to
It’s a big shift for me in terms of complexity compared to the relative simplicity of souls. But I am absolutely loving it though!
Honestly it isn't that much complex, you simply need to get the hang of it, we've learnt to master Souls, we will managed Clair Obscur :P
Though this game is better approached once you hit the end of Act 2 and suddently a loooot of content is available to you !
So first time playing and I’m hearing mixed opinions.
Some say do it early to save NPCs (e.g. kvatch), but then level to 22 for a ring for another quest?
I don’t want to miss out on NPCs or OP rings, is there a guide as to what level to tackle certain quests for max rewards?
Try the wikis. But you may need to check each of your current quests.
22 and above for the Mundane Ring to drop on Raven Camoran which is probably the ring you’re referring to. If I remember correctly it’s 25 and up for quests to give their highest stat versions of rewards.
That being said there are more rewards than you’ll be able to use practically in one play through so unless you have a specific reward in mind speed leveling isn’t really necessary. Being a below a certain level to make a quest easier or keep npc’s alive is still a useful tactic.
