What Redditors are Saying

Best Xbox Communication Apps

TL;DR Discord is preferred for cross-platform communication, while the Xbox app and Game Bar offer native solutions with varying reliability.

Xbox Party Chat vs. Discord

Many users prefer Discord for cross-platform play due to its flexibility and familiarity [1:1]. However, the Xbox party chat app is still used by those who primarily game on Xbox [1:1]. The Xbox app has been criticized for echo issues and poor management after updates [1:2]. Despite these drawbacks, some find it faster for quick chats [1].

Xbox App Alternatives

With the discontinuation of the Console Companion app, users have turned to alternatives like the Xbox Game Bar on PC [2:1], which integrates social features. For mobile, the Xbox app allows regular messages and voice chats [2:3]. Additionally, using a keyboard with your Xbox or pinning chat windows via WinKey+G are suggested methods for text chatting [2:4][2:5].

Reliability and Issues

The Xbox Console Companion app has faced criticism for connectivity issues and unreliable functionality [3]. Users have reported problems joining parties, audio failures, and inconsistent friend list displays [3:1]. While the Xbox Game Bar is moving towards being the main hub for social features [3:2], it lacks certain functionalities like initiating proper Xbox Live Parties [3:6].

Mobile App Limitations

The Xbox mobile app has been noted for its loading inconsistencies and connection issues during party chats [4]. Users have expressed frustration over frequent updates that reset settings like message notifications [4:1]. Suggestions for improvement include adding features such as game pricing and purchasing directly through the app [4:2].

Other Useful Apps

Beyond communication apps, users have found utility in apps like Moonlight for streaming PC content to Xbox [5:3], VLC for media playback [5:4], and wireless display options [5:6]. These apps enhance the Xbox experience by offering additional functionalities beyond gaming.

ORIGINAL POST

It's more of a discussion post? I think xbox gamers talk less through xbox app and prefer discord. But, honestly, I found xbox app as a faster way to chat. Don't you think so? What do you use to talk?

epicgreenapple25 · 13 days ago

That and the Xbox app is notorious for echo and tweaking. Their app used to be really really good back when they were when they owned mixer. It was a really good app to use because you were streaming. So a lot of people use the Xbox app as a way to keep parties outside of the outside of your streams. So they made the app really good and then they updated the app. Not too long after they got rid of mixer and made it crappy. It's like a terrible app. It doesn't get updated. They made terrible management issues. They combined the game pass app. they can bind Xbox app, game pass app and the the stream app where you can stream Xbox games all into one app and made it very kind of intuitive which is nice. But it's still a s***** app unlike other people said you can get comb band for just to buy anything these days and they don't do a lot of report checks anymore like they used to back in the day. So like for an example if you were to say a cuss word you're going to get banned. But if you're in a party with everyone you know and someone reports you, you're still going to get banned even though you were in with the party with everyone you know because it's a, it's a swear word. They don't want you using it, which I get which makes sense now if you're in a random party with someone and you say a curse word you're automatically getting banned as well because there's a curse word. But if let's say you're thinking I'm going to be safe and not swear you're still going to get banned. Cuz if they can determine what you're trying to say curse word wise then you're going to get banned

Chat bans are the most common ban. I think alot of people have moved away from using the Xbox chat as it less likely to get you banned on the account.

Oh so a chat ban, bans the account?

After several infractions, it can lead to more than chat suspensions. It’s also pretty annoying to not be able to use the chat due to a suspension.

I use the Xbox party app if I'm with friends on Xbox. If it's cross play then we'll do discord but it doesn't matter that much

It works better than the discord usually but the UI is very similar to it except you can switch channels in discord.

So now that the console companion app is being discontinued, how do you use the new app for text chat while on Xbox?

Posted by loxim · in r/xboxone · 5 years ago

I found this to super useful while on my xbox to have the app open on my pc and be able to quickly send messages in game or through friend chats. Is there a replacement for this at all?

It does.

The mobile app works for regular messages, as well as in-party chats, and voice chats too.

Just press WinKey+G and pin the chat to your screen. You don't need to keep an app open.

I've definitely tried this before a few times, but the game bar for some reason doesn't open on desktop at all. I've tried re-downloading the app a few times but nothing happens. It's weird too because it works fine on my laptop.

I think I have seen this happen before. Try resetting the app from the Apps list, or failing that, run this command in an Elevated Powershell;

Get-AppxPackage -allusers | foreach {Add-AppxPackage -register "$($_.InstallLocation)\appxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode}

Why has it been disconnected

loxim · OP · 5 years ago

Because for the gamepass app is being used, they are basically forcing you to switch. Can't use the streaming feature or the typing feature in that.

As far as I know the Xbox Console Companion app is still available. I don't believe that they will discontinue it until there is an alternative for in-home console game streaming.

Party chat and other social activities have been moved to Xbox Game Bar. If it is not working for you, I would definitely do some troubleshooting there. You may want to experiment with disabling third party gaming overlays.

The Xbox companion app is just awful.

Posted by JoeDannyMan · in r/xboxone · 5 years ago

This app is terrible in almost every way possible.

I haven't been able to join a part even once from my PC while using this app. This aspect of the app just doesn't function at all. It either tells me my network settings aren't correct, or it won't output any audio and I can't talk to others in the party, or the party chat will work for 10 seconds and then stop working.

The friends list works about 25% of the time. The other 75% is a mind-numbing process of restarting the app and hoping the list pops up.

The two most basic function that I would expect out of this app don't work at all. It's such a disappointment because the Xbox companion app has such potential to be an awesome way to communicate with your console friends while you're playing on PC, by alas Microsoft seems to have abandoned it.

Has anyone else had these issues with the app?

Only downside to Game Bar is you can't see who's in a party you're about to join. I use the companion app to check and use Game Bar for just about everything else.

You also cannot initiate a proper Xbox Live Party from the Game Bar. You can start a voice chat, with one or multiple people, but it does not register as an Xbox Live Party and people cannot be invited into an existing voice chat. It's honestly the biggest issue I have with the Game Bar.

i cannot remember if it’s in windows settings or settings of the companion app, but when my parties were messing up there’s a section where you can see your IP and stuff and there’s a button that says “fix it.” i hit that, let it do it’s thing then it worked again. i’d try that. almost certain it’s in game settings in windows.

Except for when you have to refresh pages several times just to get them to load properly, or when party invites glitch out and only go to mobile and not your Xbox, or when half the time your messages won't load in properly when you're trying to have a conversation.

This sounds like a profile or network issue between your computer and your Xbox.

Just to be clear, you're using Xbox Console Companion on the PC right? Are you able to connect to your Xbox One through it to stream it for instance? Does it show up in that list?

You may be able to troubleshoot it through one of the these linked solutions.

For the record, the app does tend to work pretty well, albeit sometimes slow, but for something like party chat (text and voice), it is quite nice. My main beef with it is that should I accept a party invite on my console, it will just straight up drop me from a party on PC, rather than swap my PC party chat to the other party. Essentially you need to do ALL of your party stuff in the app, or it messes up.

Oh and Microsoft needs to add an audio input sensitivity scale so that my PC mic doesn't pick up the entire ambient noise of my room. This honestly should be a feature they look to implement natively in Windows as a whole, but if not that at the very least offer it within these voice-chat apps (Companion and Gamebar).

On your PC, apparently.

If you are sure your connection is sound, try resetting the app. If that doesn't fix it, you may have a corrupt user profile or some other issues with your Windows installation.

Xbox mobile app suggestion

Posted by kargoth05 · in r/xboxinsiders · 6 years ago

Why does the xbox mobile app have to be so bad? What is going on at Microsoft, where they can not get such an app functional?

Okay. Its half a rant, but more so a suggestion to actually putting some valuable time and effort into the app. The mobile app has been a huge problem since it's been out.

Party chat - I've had many issues with party chat (which is finally improved, thank you), still needs work though with connection and audio I feel.

Loading - This is probably the most inconsistent and inconvenient part of using the xbox mobile app. I open up the app and go to friends and it loads up nothing half the time. It shows 0 online. This doesn't make sense because I've checked on the xbox app via PC and on xbox and it shows people online. it works at times whether I'm on wifi or using data. It's just very inconsistent. Currently the messages will not load it current says "Live updates not available, pull down to refresh". I do what it says and I refresh it using the refresh icon and nothing works. This has been busted for about 5 days I'd say. Possibly longer. Things just don't load properly.

Videos - this is another very very long and slow process. I don't understand why captures that I want to watch take so long to buffer and watch. This is also regardless of wifi or data. To watch a 30 second clip takes at least 2 minutes because of buffering. Also, when I go to rewind or fast forward it doesn't work and I have to press back and load up the video again and wait for it to buffer. Half the time the quality isn't even there for it to need to buffer that long. I get a message with a clip and I'm just like here we go. And if they record longer than 30 seconds, its inconvenient and I wait to watch on the xbox itself.

Right now, this is all that is popping in my mind and I can't take the fact Microsoft is letting this app fail so hard. They do programs for days and this app causes for fails far to often. I love Microsoft. Lol please fix some issues! Thanks!

My wishlist for xbox app:

  1. Put price on games finally so we can buy directly from app like on playstation app.
  2. Wishlist and basket...like on playstation app.

This is my two priority, without this app very useless for me. Thx

The pc app really isn't much better, so at least it's consistent? It's too bad since the 360 smartglass app was much more reliable.

I don't think anything irks me more than the fact it turns off message notifications every single time it gets an update, which feels like at least once a week sometimes

I use the app for a few things. To download a game while I'm at work. If a coworker asks me to play a game on GamePass, I just click it and it'll be done that night. I also use it as a chatpad for messages.

I would buy another chatpad if MS made one. I don't trust third party solutions.

Idk if it's my phone, but the app is horribly slow/laggy. I hate using it but it's better than taking 10 minutes to type a sentence on controller.

I also use the GamePass app to play xcloud. It's sweet.

I found using the Ace Combat sub (eventually) actually quite a happy, friendly & helpful place.

I'd never played multiplayer before, and not only was a kid happy to take the time out to show me how to do just that. He then spent hours with me 1-on-1until he opened the game to his mates, so I get used to the pace of it. They then asked me to join their team; made a few friendships from that team too
