TL;DR
Microphone Setup
Ensure that your microphone is properly connected and unmuted. This is a basic step but crucial for enabling voice chat [4:2]. If you're using the latest Xbox headphones, they have features to adjust chat volume or mute it entirely
[4:1].
Voice Chat Settings
Xbox's default setting for voice chat is often "push to talk," which requires you to hold a button to speak. Many users recommend changing this setting to "toggle" so that you can keep your mic active without holding a button [2:2]
[3:1]. You can find these options under Settings > Audio > Voice Chat
[2:4].
In-Game Controls
For some games, specific in-game controls are necessary to enable voice chat. For example, holding LB and pressing up on the D-pad can activate game chat [3:2]. Always check if the game has unique settings or controls for voice communication.
Cross-Platform Communication
If you're looking to communicate with friends on other platforms, Xbox Party Chat is a reliable option [5:10]. Additionally, external applications like Discord can be used, although their integration with Xbox might be less seamless
[5:1]
[5:6]. Discord can also be accessed via mobile devices for easier cross-platform interaction
[5:12].
Troubleshooting Tips
If you're experiencing issues like not hearing others or them not hearing you, double-check your privacy settings under "Privacy > General" and ensure all chat options are set to "receive" [2:5]. Also, verify that your audio settings are correctly configured to allow voice chat
[2:3].
Does anyone know how you use voice chat on Xbox? I see it in settings and have it turned on but it's still saying I'm muted in game.

There is a hold to speak option look for under your map while in game
I can not figure out how to use voice chat at all. If you hold the select button the screen displays a message saying "voice chat enabled" which this switches to disabled when released. But no matter what I do I don't hear anyone speaking, nor apparently can they hear me. I've gone through all my xbox settings and I don't think that's the problem.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong here?
You can change it in the settings. It's set for push to talk by default. I set it to toggle so I can just mute my mic. It'll still switch off between loading screens though.
Settings-Audio-Voice Chat "hold to speak" is default. "Press to switch" is what you want.
Do you know what the specific setting is under? Under "Privacy > general" I see the "chat" section, which by default has everything set to "recieve"
Settings > Audio > Voice Chat > Speech Mode

I am having the exact same problem and can't figure it out. I switched my settings so that I can toggle voice chat on and off, but when I enable it, I can't hear anyone talking.
How do you use game chat??
In or out of a match hold LB and press up on the d-pad
turn off push to talk
I was in a multiplayer server and heard another player talking but I couldn’t figure out how to.
Make sure ur mic is unmuted and plugged in. And should be good to go
Thanks! I’ll try it out when I get home
Did they even make a way to mute people? I’d always have to leave because of annoying kids.
Yeah they did you go to the multiplayer section and press on the players username and there’s a mute option
I haven't tried that before but the latest Xbox headphones have the ability to turn down/mute chat.
My friend wants to learn SoT. However they play Xbox. Is there a way for us to talk to each other without having to use in game chat? Thanks!
You can still use party chat, just download the xbox game bar
What this they said^
Xbox party is the best way.
Alternatively, there is a beta version of quarrel for Xbox that allows you to use discord, but it’s clunky and doesn’t work all the time.
I don't think it runs in the background with mic input
It does, I’ve done it playing with friends on PC. It does crash every so often though.
Im sure other people said discord but discord
Discord
Surprised neither of you mentioned discord yet
Aside from Xbox party chat, there are also programs like Discord, Skype, etc. that are designed around voice chat.
Xbox can't use these
True, but mobile devices can.
Xbox party.
If you’re on Xbox playing with other Xbox ppl, just send them a party invite (forgive me if this was obvious)
They have temporarily removed voice chat because it was garbage and no one used it
Nah back in 2017 the kids who didn't realise it was on used it. Then occasionally the salty 30yo who smokes
shit hopping this wasnt me
My question is why would you want it on lol
Hi,
I am struggling to understand how to voice chat with random people in game.
Me and my party are using the xbox group and we chat with no issues, but if I meet someone, how do I say hello?
I can see in the game setting I've got set voice chat to push to talk, but then what? Do I need to equip the trumpet and hit the push to talk button? Will it not crash with the Xbox voice chat I'm in?
Sorry if this is trivial.
I use the series x wireless headset. One Bluetooth channel connected to game chat, the other to our discord chat on my phone.
Not helpful if none of you have that, but a workaround if you do!
It’s really annoying, you can’t hear both game chat and party chat at once but the quickest way to switch between the two on controller is press Xbox button, down twice on the D pad and press the Select button (to the left of the Xbox button). Then do the same to switch back.
my friend can switch freely between the two. he always hears ppl talking to him. I don't get it
Does he play PC?
When in a party, the in game voice chat is turned off. You can switch to game chat in the party options by selecting your gamertag.
Also if you have it set to push to talk I think you need to bind a button on your controller for this. I just switch my mic off/on instead since there's plenty of better uses for all the buttons you can spare.
expound upon this. my friend can hear ppl outside 9f The party when we're in one but I never can
Cant seem to find the button for push to talk, or how to have voice chat in general.
It was working fine for a few days then out of nowhere just stopped working. I checked all my settings, restarted my Xbox and reinstalled but nothing helped then it randomly began working again.
Then I played today and it's stopped working again. Can't speak and can't hear anyone (yes I'm pressing up on the D pad).
It was working for me fine yesterday, but then it just stopped
Mine partially works, but my friends don't.
They've tried it all. Hopefully if gets fixed soon.
Mine works if I die. Then I’ll be able to talk other than that, I won’t be able to lol. It’s easy to tell as well because you see it on the side of the screen it comes up with your name and green.
It’s glitched and doesn’t work
have u tried using l1 and up on dpad? it was working for me not to long ago
It hasn’t worked for me at all Ps5 to Xbox We both can’t hear each other
It's currently bugged on PS5/Xbox.
Does
PS5: L1 + Dpad up
Xbox: Left bumper + Dpad up
work for you? Or are you having issues with VOIP?
I unmuted the mic and still can’t talk or hear
Thanks for the info.
I'd love if they made it so you could have "area active voip" and press-to-talk for "walkies channel voip" with static when engaging and releasing, having NPCs reacting to voices in their area and enabling players to use click-commands for fun and for strat.
Just played my first 3 games; B, A (on normal) and F (on hard) in that order (I gotta learn to check doors for boomstuffs 😅); and am now playing around with customisation trying to build a fast, low armor flanking-class. 5 primaries and 5 stingers. Am I over-estimating the stab-vest
Does the master race, in their infite wisdom (read FPS) and skill (read: input-accuracy), recommend AR, SMG or Shotgun for flank-running? Movement- and ADS-speed being the qualities I tend to look for.
I also just had to build a custom cosmetic class called "Laundry Day" once I saw the short-bus helmet. 😂
Been bugged since start for me
Thanks. I want to immerse myself.
Hold Y as the default to speak. I’m not 100% sure but there might be an option in the settings menu to make it stay on all the time.
there's no open mic setting or toggle to talk.
On pc, some use a keyholder which basically act as a toggle to talk
Was doing that and was told it wasn’t working by my roommate
if the two of you are in a party chat, your mic won't be heard in game, need to be set on game audio instead of party
That’s odd. I wonder if it’s an issue with your mic or something that’s not game side or even something on your roommate’s end.
To use proximity chat, while in a ps5 or Xbox party chat, switch your in game mic settings to general. Then while in party chat you can simply hold Y/triangle to speak to in game players while still in party chat mode. No discord or any other setting needed.
Hi all

When I log in games, let's say Halo infinite, I would expect the team to talk. I have enabled the 'open mic' setting on my end, but I can't hear anyone talking and I'm not even sure they can hear me.

Party chat voice works, when I'm in a party.
Sorry I'm new to xbox. How can I talk to my teammeates or people I'm playing with?
People dont use game chat. That kinda died after the 360 era
Yesterday in a Halo Infinite match, I randomly hear some guy say “behind you Ghost” and I turn around, kill the guy behind me, and just kinda stood in disbelief because that’s the first time I’ve heard a voice in game chat in literally years.
The system doesn’t come with a mic anymore.
Playing with music can be a better experience.
I’d rather have less talk than the abundance of annoying people that plagued games before.
People might not want to become a viral video.
That being said, if someone is talking and I happen to be wearing a headset I’d talk a little. Also there is more talking in ranked and you can tell the teams that talk to each other.
Sadly, most people stay in Party Chat.
I recommend using the Multiplayer Tab (basically a "Looking For Group" feature) on the Halo Infinite Official Club page on Xbox (press start/menu on the Halo Infinite icon on your Xbox)
There you can find other groups looking for friends/players trying to get a party going.
You can also create a post there too and send out invites to players that are interested.
I think most ppl keep the open chat turned off cuz there is so many idiots in matchmaking that just want to blast their music without muting their mic or are just extremely annoying and toxic. Back in the day on Halo 1,2,3 everyone used the open chat, so you could actually meet cool new ppl in-game, but thats much harder to do now. You'd probably be better off looking for ppl to play with on the Halo or XSX discords.
Gaming 7+ years ago was so fun. You could meet so many cool people. Hardly anyone used party chat, now that's all people do.
Tbf there are simply other means of meeting people now. It takes a little more effort but you can find use the LFG feature on consoles now or join a Discord group.
But yeah, the days of making actual friends in game lobbies are over.
it was also incredibly toxic back then. Lot’s of slurs. Still, it was fun to trash talk your opponents and communicate tactics with your team mates
I remember being confused when i tried talking and couldnt hear anyone in halo infinite. Then learned they made voice off by default. On top of no pre/post game lobby and hiding the score behind a button press after the match, i feel like they did those things to try to be more inclusive or something like that. Same with the new battlefield not having match stats and such.. they end up making stuff feel empty and pointless.
