BTS has a number of songs that address mental health issues, providing comfort and understanding to listeners who may be struggling. Below are some notable tracks and insights from discussions about their impact.
Songs Addressing Mental Health
Several BTS songs explicitly deal with themes related to mental health. Notable mentions include "The Truth Untold," "Blue & Grey," "Zero O'Clock," and "Epiphany" [2:3]. These songs often explore feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and the search for self-acceptance, resonating deeply with fans who find solace in their lyrics.
Impact on Fans
Many fans have shared personal stories about how BTS's music has helped them through difficult times. For instance, one fan mentioned that listening to BTS's playlist on Spotify gives them strength to live despite experiencing suicidal thoughts [1:4]. Another user highlighted how Yoongi's openness about his own struggles with OCD, anxiety, and depression has been revolutionary and comforting
[1:3].
Agust D's Solo Work
Suga's solo work as Agust D, particularly songs like "Amygdala" and "The Last," offers a raw and honest look at severe depression and mental health struggles [2:1]. His candid approach provides a sense of relatability and understanding for listeners dealing with similar issues.
Calming and Uplifting Tracks
In addition to addressing mental health directly, BTS has numerous songs that fans find calming and uplifting. Tracks such as "Magic Shop," "Life Goes On," "Mikrokosmos," and "Butterfly" are frequently recommended for their soothing melodies and hopeful messages [3:1]
[3:3]. These songs can serve as a comforting presence during anxious or depressive episodes.
Community and Support
Beyond the music itself, the BTS community offers support and encouragement. Fans often share resources like crisis hotlines and express empathy for those going through tough times [1:11]. The collective experience of finding comfort in BTS's music fosters a sense of belonging and mutual understanding among listeners.
BTS's discography is rich with songs that touch on mental health themes, offering both direct discussions and indirect comfort through their diverse musical styles and heartfelt lyrics. Whether you're looking for songs that address mental health head-on or tracks that provide a calming influence, BTS's music can be a valuable part of your coping toolkit.
I do not mean to imply from the title that BTS content can replace any kind of qualified mental health treatment -- I firmly encourage talking to your primary care physician, psychiatrist, or therapist if you are struggling with mental health issues, as I am.
That said, sometimes you find something that can legitimately lift your mood. For me, BTS has been a genuinely positive influence. For example: I've been in a severe depressive slump, and tonight, I was struggling to clean my apartment. I put on BTS music (I started out with some older stuff from 2015 or so) and it helped me get started with doing the dishes.
Some of the songs that I find most uplifting when I'm really feeling that depression are Magic Shop, Spring Day, and 2! 3!. They just legit make me feel a sense of hope.
Does BTS content ever work this way for you when you're feeling low? What songs lift you up, and why? Have you had a positive mental health experience with BTS?
All the time. We always say you find BTS when you need them the most, and that's exactly what happened for me. I was in a dark place where I wasn't sure I would ever feel happiness again. The boost they gave me was exactly what I needed. I don't rely on them (or any one thing) for my mental health but they give me a hand up when it's hard to do it myself. There's no one thing (content, song, etc) that does it for me, but those days when I feel like I can't get out of bed, I'll pull up an episode of Run or start up a playlist or watch a Bangtan Bomb. And I feel that spark of happiness, and then it's like dominoes. Happiness gives me energy which gets me out of bed which motivates me which makes me want to be part of the world.
But, they're also there when I just don't want to be boosted, when I do just want to stay in bed. I saw a tweet about mono once that said that the album feels like when you're in a dark room all alone, and instead of being forced to open the door and come out, Joon sits with you in the dark and tells you you're not alone and holds your hand until you can open the door yourself. Just kind of like "you're okay, I know how you feel, come out when you're ready". And that is just as helpful to me as the happiness.
This is such a beautiful way of explaining how it feels listening to Mono. Like, I feel like the people making this music (Joon, in this case) understand the place I'm in. They won't urge me to stay in an unhealthy place, but I'm not alone, and that's the big difference.
Truthfully, what breaks my heart is that in order to make music that is so empathetic to a deep dark place, they must have been there. I don't wish that on anyone. It's so, so common, but I hate thinking that anyone else knows what this is like.
I completely relate to what you're saying about the domino effect. It's like, if I can get out of bed, I can brush my teeth, and if I can brush my teeth, I can put on work clothes...and if I can do all of that, I can hang in there until my meds kick in and I'm ready to actually be a person.
>what breaks my heart is that in order to make music that is so empathetic to a deep dark place, they must have been there
It really is heartbreaking. I hate to think about any of them (or anyone really) being in the mental and emotional places that lead to some of their lyrics. But I'm also glad they have an outlet for it, one that really, truly touches other people. I hope that helps them as much as their music helps us.
As a licensed mental health professional, I totally agree. While listening to BTS can be a coping skill or something within the mental health field refer to as a "protective factor" ( essentially strengths that can help alleviate symptoms- can also be seen as a buffer as well), it should not be a replacement for any mental health treatment.
I can also say that their music (as well as content in general ex. Run BTS - the show etc) has definitely helped me to keep going as I'm a pandemic ARMY. Songs that lift me up currently or in the past have been: LGO, Not Today, Spring Day, YTC, & Blue & Grey. But honestly, they have so many that have helped me in the past, it almost doesn't feel comprehensive that these were the only ones I've listed - but more so on the top of my head.
While I could go on and on about specific moments where they've helped me, I wanted to speak more on how they approach mental health in general. Aside from their music, I appreciate that they haven't shied away from talking about their mental health and I think that's huge. I'm not Korean so I don't know to what extent how mental health is viewed but GENERALLY in Asian cultures (one that I identify with), mental health is heavily stigmatized even in the Western/American culture as well. I will say people talk more about mental health, but the stigma is still there. I think when they speak out about it, that influences people and hopefully that can also impact how we view it over time. This is one of the things I do appreciate about them, even if we're having a hard time in our lives or our situations- we don't need to push that away in the sense of shoving it down or pretending it's ok when it's not. They toe the line with balancing and accepting that sometimes things will be hard but it's not the end all be all of everything, that it's ok to be in the low parts of things for a bit .
I remember when I found out Yoongi has OCD, anxiety, and depression. His honesty about that was revolutionary to me. That must have taken a lot of courage to go public with, but when I'm way down in the depths of depression I can remember that I am not the only person who has gone through this. And I think seeing a hugely successful person who has such public empathy for mental health issues reminds me that my life is not going to be defined by how bad I feel right now.
Hey. Do you happen to remember where he has discussed these things? I was reading a translation to his song The Last and started to wonder if he has talked more about the song or his own mental health somewhere.
I have been in a depressive slump for one month now and have had suicidal thoughts too. Every time I had them, I look at the This is BTS playlist on Spotify and see how many new songs have been added to that since I became an army. Being alive to hear and witness their new music genuinely gives me the strength to live. it sounds stupid and dramatic, but these 7 boys are one of the only reasons why I wanna hold on to life.
I take a lot of comfort in listening to Agust D so I thought I’d suggest it if you haven’t already. He really delves into mental health and maybe you’ll be able to relate. I hope the professionals can help you as well 💜 and you keep holding on
Just gonna put this here but the suicide and crisis lifeline is 988 if you're in the US. They're available 24/7 and you can call or just text them if you're having those thoughts and need a professional to talk too. Hope you feel better, sending you purple hearts 💜
Ouch, friend, I unfortunately completely understand because I've been going through the same thing. I don't think you're being stupid or dramatic at all. There is no such thing as a stupid reason to stay alive.
i didn't start listening to bts until i got out of a depression. their music didn't cure me, but i will always associate it with feeling lighter, better.
For all the jokes on twitter etc about Run BTS being free therapy, rewatching episodes has genuinely made me feel better on more than one occasion. Sometimes giggling at antics is just the thing you need to make other stuff feel less stress inducing.
I was surprised how excited i was waiting for the new/special episodes to drop.
hope this is the right place to ask this - i’m looking for groups that have songs related to mental health and mental illnesses. i’m struggling really bad, and k-pop often times brings me joy. thank you for any recs :)
Stray Kids earlier albums and Sriracha in general talks a lot about mental health :)
Do you mean 3racha LOL
I did. It's been a while.
the truth untold, blue & grey, zero o'clock and epiphany by BTS.
not a kpop group but a k-band- highly recommend The Rose! Here are some recs :)
Yes! The Rose has so many good songs that really make you feel things in your soul. Lol! I'd also add Eclipse off Dual. Something about the lyrics are so relatable.
She’s in the rain is STUNNING, especially the ending. “We’re in the rain” makes me cry everytime
She's in the Rain still absolutely destroys me to this day! What a beautiful way to honor someone they lost <3
Day6 'I need somebody' and 'Zombie' (i prefer the english version of Zombie but the Kr is amazing too)
Not a group but Amygdala and The Last by Agust D very frankly address severe depression and struggling with mental health.
I get really anxious in the mornings, and I’ve found listening to bts helps calms me down, so what are some bts songs that you guys would recommend?
My favorites so far as been scenery-V, 4 o’clock, and magic shop
I have a Chill BTS playlist that fits the criteria. Some of my favorites included are Blue & Grey, Seoul, Her, Seesaw, 134340, Love Maze, Moving On, Blue Side, Butterfly.
100 points for a Her mention
Zero O’clock, Life Goes On, Mikrokosmos, Everything Goes
These are the ones that got me through a really tough time…I find them very soothing & hopeful :)
zero o clock my beloved 🥹 best feel better song in their discography imo
but also- lost, 2! 3!, a supplementary story: you never walk alone, outro: wings, magic shop, answer: love myself, mikrokosmos, lights, we are bulletproof: the eternal…so many. also not bts technically bc it’s just agust d but life goes on and people both give me a sense of calm in my heart 💜
Ever since it came out, Winter Ahead has been my go to, usually after a stressful work day
Blue and grey, sad yet comforting in it's own way. It's a reminder that it's okay to feel this way.
Hello everyone! Any recommended kpop songs for my mental health? I'm currently suffering anxiety/depression right now. Please help me. Sorry for my bad english. Thanks!

Might I suggest THE song to listen to when things get a bit much:
Written for them when they were going through a rough time (including Mina’s hiatus due to anxiety) and is among their favorites to perform since it’s so personal.
Highly recommend reading about it too, it may help knowing the lyrics/background. Take care and hang in there!

It's weird how people drag and mock BTS for having songs about mental health in SOME of their songs. It's not a drag you think it is. They always say "I just wanna shake some ass without listening to songs who uses mental health as a concept." I'm more speechless whenever they use the word 'concept', does talking and be open about one's insecurities and struggles are concept now? Or maybe they just wanna talk about it cause you know, news flash, music can be a way to express yourself, right?
Also, mental health aren't the only thing BTS talked about in their music, they always talk about pressure as adults, as students, toxic working environment, fake respect, performative/misplaced anger, women empowerment, government, romantic love and etc. And oh, you can shake some ass while listening to that depressing ehem, OUTRO: TEAR, Comeback Home, Dope, etc.
Normalise seeing idols as human and not some random products. Let them talk whatever they want
Edit: Here
Edit again: It's weird to me whenever ARMYs try point out people dragging BTS, some of yall pull "BUT ARMYs", can we normalise letting ARMYs pointing other fandoms toxicity without yall pulling "BUT ARMYs?" Cause let's be real, every fandom is toxic it's just some of you can't swallow that pill
Hello u/jei1220, your post was one of the top posts of the day. Your flair has been updated!
^(I am a bot! Please contact the moderators if you have any questions or concerns.)
It’s in response to armys being condescending to other groups for supposedly having shallow music
So in your opinion what 5 BTS songs make you ball your eyes out and feel so much. Whether it’s bc you personally relate to it or cause it’s just so pretty etc.
Hehe just curious 💜💜💜💜
Got some standards, and some weird ones:
Honorable mentions to First Love, and Life Goes On 🥲
Spring Day and Dear My Friend make me super emotional. I think both version of Life Goes On and 2! 3! would probably round out my list but Spring Day and Dear My Friend are definitely the top two to make me cry. I’ve had a lot of family members pass away in recent years and the emotion of those two songs just brings back the grief.
In this order:
Honourable mention to Seesaw because I've cried to it several times... although it's usually just positive vibes.
I don't know why Whalien 52 just KILLS ME every time. And the "whale" that you can hear singing in the back ugh 😭😭
OT7:
• Blue & Grey - helped me when I was at my darkest and reason I’m army
• 00:00 - bad days/arguments with loved ones makes me feel better
• Lights - “Sundays when I can’t answer any calls or texts, i’m not in the mood for anything” 🥺💜
Crystal Snow - feeling of wanting to be closer to someone but can’t
Magic Shop - cosy song makes me feel better on bad days
Solos:
Amygdala - healing song makes me feel safe, seen and heard🥹
Snooze
Wild Flower - chills every time and the seesaw of indescribable emotions the song makes me feel
Uh Good
The Astronaut

I have seen a user stating that it is a cheap marketing tactic to use these topics in songs to create emotional and parasocial relationships among the fans and BTS to earn a profit.
here it is Also the only cheap manipulative tactics I condemned is their usage of serious issues that teens and young adults are mainly suffering from and try to make it into products for profit and consumerism, not to mention to make their fans more invested and hardcore because they marketed themselves as this symbol and progenitor of "love yourself" and insecure/emotionally weak fans are absolutely gonna bite into those and they know that.
please dont go to my profile and then search for the user to harass them. i don't want to create any problem for them bcoz it is my personal problem.
so what do you think about it?
not just bts but i have seen many artists using these topics in their songs. is there any problem with that? of course, it generates money, and they want to earn too but to say its just for profit-making didn't sit right with me. music and its lyrics is also a form of healing.
so if in the future any group or artist creates songs on these topics then they are just inhuman people who just want to earn from people's emotions???? like what is it?
I just want to see others' opinions on it. Thank you
I can't talk about other Kpop groups or labels but I can talk about BTS.
Depiction of mental health in any art form — books, music, film and so on — is not the problem, imo. The manner in which these are depicted can be either problematic or not.
A brief, unhelpful and badly charted summary of BTS's artistic journey (ARMYs — please correct me if I go wrong anywhere!):
I think one of the ways to gauge whether the depiction is just a one-off money-making strategy or something more genuine is to see the level of engagement with the topic.
BTS depicted and spoke about mental health issues right from their first song, first album. Their earliest work, (No more Dreams) depicted the pressures of ambition placed on young people. Then in the subsequent years, you had songs like Tomorrow, or Paradise, on similar topics.
Then there is the Bangtan Universe with its whole storyline, in HYYH 1 and 2, YNWA and Wings. This portrayed a host of issues that young people faced in terms of mental health, friendship, relationships, and so on. The MVs for Run, I Need U and so on depicted mental health issues. These are issues which slightly older people face — those who are no longer in school but are facing the complexities of life. Spring Day in YNWA talked about missing someone and recovering from grief and is connected to the Sewol tragedy.
During this time, the rappers also dropped their mixtapes which, again, talked about mental health in an even more personal manner, Agust D's The Last being one such example.
Then the entire Love Yourself series, along with the tie up with the UN through which they raised $2.3 million till November 2019 (the website says that the numbers need to be updated). In this series, we see their focus on even more complex issues of love and connections. And then finally MOTS which is based on the works of Carl Jung and which depicts the mental health issues that are faced by artists and how they can overcome them. There are also singles like Abyss or songs like Blue and Grey in their latest album BE, which speak about burn out or depression.
Why am I taking you through their whole discography? I just want to point out that talking about mental health and depicting positive growth and recovery is not a gimmick in the case of BTS.
Here's why:
They've engaged with this topic from their very first title song (No More Dreams) to their last two title songs (Life Goes On and Black Swan). They have come back to the same topics over and over again in songs through the years.
They've engaged with this topic through music, through their multi-media alternate universe stuff, through their mixtapes. They've depicted the topic in their MVs and their lyrics.
They've talked about mental health from the perspective of school going kids, adults, and big global artists — their discussions grew organically as they themselves grew up. They've talked about it in the larger group scale and in the very personal sense.
They've delved into actual literature and psychology and mythology (Dionysus) to talk about mental health.
They've connected mental health to social events and issues, such as the Sewol tragedy or the ongoing pandemic, and have partnered with an actual global charity, UNICEF.
What I'm trying to say here is, BTS's engagement with mental health issues is not a "flash in the pan, let's earn a quick buck" type of thing. It's a long standing, holistic engagement, through their entire career, through all the media they've worked with. It's been a constant pre-occupation in their life.
Your post says that someone said the following:
>cheap manipulative tactic
It's not up to that person to invalidate any discussion on mental health and call it cheap. If anyone finds comfort through this, let them? I also think that it's not just a tactic on BTS's part because it's so long standing.
>fans are more invested and hardcore
But those fans have not yet been let down, have they? BTS's commitment to these issues has been unwavering, at least till date. Doesn't that count for anything?
>make it a product for profit and consumerism
God I hate it when people think art should not be business. That, somehow, for art to be noble, it needs to not be profit-making or consumerist. Listen, artists need to make money too. And if they are selling their art for high profit, it does not automatically make their art bad or evil or a "cheap tactic". Does BigHit frequently make moves which are purely money-grabbing? Yes, definitely. But does that make BTS's music or message poor quality or fake? No, I don't think so.
>insecure and emotionally weak fans
Who are they to label fans as such? Who are they to assume that someone finding comfort through a particular type of music is weak or insecure? Fuck them.
Criticizing BTS for being profit making is one thing, but depicting much of the fandom as insecure and weak is just another level of cynicism.
What does anyone stand to gain from this cynicism? They're not going to stop BTS from making music, or stop fans from buying into BTS's franchise. All that this cynicism does is to make a few people who read their comment feel bad for enjoying a particular type of music. How is that a useful contribution to the world?
I’m saving this for the next time I get a reward. What you said deserves to be top comment instead of mine
Thank you.
The members have talked about their own struggles with mental health, and they have repeatedly put that into their music. Taehyung and Jin wrote about their burnout in Blue & Grey and Abyss, Suga has written many songs in his mixtapes about his struggles with depression, RM was the main songwriter for the LY era and has written songs like Reflection about his own self-hatred. The entire MOTS era was about how they're struggling with their own personas/passion for music, and all the solo songs were very personal. There are many more examples of this. I highly doubt any of them are making elaborate schemes to fake sadness, depression, or anxiety for their music. That seems like a very dehumanizing thing to say.
I don't doubt that BH likes to profit off of telling people to love themselves. But that's what companies do: make profit off of what they can make profit off of. That doesn't make BTS's music or lyrics disingenuous. It's not like BH is writing these songs about mental health for the members. The members are writing about their own experiences, and BH is making money off of them. Also, there's nothing wrong with making money off of music. An artist is entitled to promote and sell their work withing losing their authenticity.
How do you tell the difference between an artist who is using the topics for profit and an artist who’s lyrics are genuine?
We all struggle with our mental health, body image, and finding who we are. Kpop idols are people too. Hell, being a Kpop idol is extremely taxing and could easily accentuate any mental health struggles the idol already has.
Until proven otherwise, I choose to believe their lyrics are genuine mainly because idols deeply struggle too.
>How do you tell the difference between an artist who is using the topics for profit and an artist who’s lyrics are genuine?
thats my question too. but that user already assumed that BTS is doing all that for money only.
I agree with your points a lot. idols struggle too.
Agreed 100%
First off, I don't believe that's the case.
Second, even if that were the case, intention does not equal impact. Even if their intent was just to make money, the impact is that the end product is actually helping millions of people around the world. So even in trying to take them down with their comment, even if it were true the OP still can't really make a case against them doing actual good which is clearly not even a debate.
You should read the lyrics and listen to Yoongi/BTS SUGA's mixtape was repeased for FREE.
On the first Agust D released im 2016, in the song "The Last" he talked about his first Psych consult with his parents. He talked about his social amxiety and the time he locked himself in a bathroom before a concert... leading to the cancellation of the concert.
All things happened to him. I think it's only possible to write about this things because he actually went through it. As a fan of him, I knew what he went through since he was young.
Sure they gained a lot of traction internationally because of the message, but we often forget that what BTS is most known for for their fans is their "sincerity", you can't deliver a message without it.
You can choose 2 songs for albums with 10+ tracks
I hope I'm not getting any of this wrong, since I'm sometimes very confused about which songs are title tracks and which ones are bsides.
I'm also excluding most of their Japanese discography since I haven't really delved into it, apart from Face Yourself.
This is a diabolical question, but I‘m gonna try and choose…

hmm, it's hard to answer as there are so many songs by BTS that I love and adore, plus it also kinda depends on my mood, but i'll try my best and choose the ones I listen to the most~
and as a plus, my favourite song by each of the members from their solo career:
RM - Groin, Seoul (the king of songwriting)
Jin - Astronaut
Suga - So Far Away
j-hope - Sweet Dreams (i love r&b and j-hope vocals here!)
Jimin - Like Crazy
V - Love Me Again (this man is an aesthetic himself)
Jungkook - Standing Next to You
I have just realised that I was supposed to choose only b-sides 😭 whatever now
