TL;DR BTS's discography includes numerous songs that delve into deep and meaningful themes, including social critique, personal struggles, and philosophical reflections. Notable examples include "Spring Day," "Whalien 52," "No More Dream," "N.O.," and "Black Swan."
Social Critique and Generation Struggles
BTS has tackled social issues and generational struggles in several of their songs. Tracks like "No More Dream," "N.O.," and "Baepsae" discuss the pressures faced by Millennials and Gen Z to meet the expectations set by previous generations [4:1]. These songs highlight the challenges of living up to societal standards and the impact of these pressures on young people today.
Personal and Emotional Themes
Many BTS songs explore personal and emotional themes, offering comfort and introspection. "Let Me Know," from their album "Dark & Wild," is praised for its raw emotion and angst, capturing a sense of urgency and longing [1:2]. Other tracks such as "Spring Day," "Magic Shop," and "The Truth Untold" are noted for their introspective lyrics that touch on themes of longing, hope, and personal growth
[4:5].
Philosophical Reflections
BTS often incorporates philosophical elements into their music, weaving them into broader narratives about love, pain, and self-discovery. "Black Swan" stands out as a song that reflects on the artists' relationship with music and their fear of losing passion for their craft [2]. Similarly, "Idol" embodies themes of self-love and acceptance, celebrating the group's journey and identity
[4:1].
Balancing Depth and Lightness
While BTS is known for their deep and meaningful songs, they also produce lighter tracks that celebrate joy and fun. This balance is evident in their diverse discography, which includes both socially conscious songs and more playful, upbeat tracks like "Boy With Luv" and "Dynamite" [5:3]
[5:4]. Fans appreciate this range, recognizing that BTS can deliver profound messages while also creating music that brings happiness and entertainment.
Conclusion
BTS's ability to blend deep, thought-provoking content with lighter, feel-good music is a testament to their versatility as artists. Their songs resonate with listeners by addressing universal themes and personal experiences, making their music both relatable and impactful. Whether through social commentary or introspective reflection, BTS continues to engage audiences with their meaningful and dynamic artistry.
Hi everyone. I was listening to this song and got hit with the realisation that it is a precious gem in BTS' amazing discography, that perhaps some people might not know about due to it being on an older album. She deserves her flowers, so here's me with my appreciation post.
##Background
"Let me know" is the 5th track on BTS' 1st ever studio album "Dark & Wild" (a 14-track masterpiece released on 20th August 2014). It is primarily produced by Suga, alongside BTS' main producer Pdogg and with RM and J-hope co-writing. Suga was heavily involved, even directing all the vocals for this one. To help contextualize the song within the album, this is Wikipedia's description of "Dark & Wild":
>"The central theme of the album's lyrics focused on expressing the sentiments of maturing, youthful desires, and impatience for romance"
"Let me know" is one of the songs dealing with heartbreak (and a whole lot of angst) following the end of a relationship where you feel left behind.
This was actually pre-released before the album but not in the same way singles are these days. On August 11th 2014 at 12 AM KST, Bighit tweeted out the link for it along with the note that it would be available for streaming for the next 24 hours only (they really were trying everything in those days, bless them). Here is a Soompi article about it, as well as the r/kpop thread for the release. While researching this, I also found a fan blog with an unfavorable review for the song and concept photos, which I found adorable, so I'm linking it here as well. Later, during the album showcase, Suga also talked about the pre-release and the rainy weather that day which suited the song's theme.
##Production
Genre-wise, the song has been described by Rolling Stone as an "R&B ballad". I am not a music expert by any means (just a huge music lover). Still, let me try to describe the magic that happens in this. But I highly recommend giving it a listen if you haven't heard it before.
The song starts with soft falsettos backed by slowly rising strings, that leads into the first lines of the song by V - stripped back, low vocals that sound haunting and dark (accentuated by the deep sound of the drums), painting a bleak and empty scenery. Suga then goes into his verse, an impassioned rap describing the feelings of emptiness being left alone at the end of a relationship. His rap is fast-paced, sometimes melodic and my favorite part is the way he uses onomatopoeia for the rain, pulling you in with him right at the start of his verse. V comes back for the prechorus, exact same lines that he started the song with, and the heavy feeling remains. The chorus by Jungkook and V that follows, with all the instruments coming in, sounds pleading and desperate.
We then go into the 2nd verse with J-hope, a melodic, gritty verse with my favorite part being the way he ends each of his lines - which is very satisfying with the way he rhymes them all. V's prechorus follows, leading into the chorus by Jin and Jimin. I personally think the chorus matches Jin's vocals best, and he captures the pleading tone of the song very well, especially in the live performances.
And then.......we have the bridge to end ALL bridges by RM (perhaps my favorite verse of his ever; I'm that obsessed with it). He starts it off singing softly, then continues with a mostly melodic verse for which his flow just evokes instant nostalgia for me every time (I can't describe it, just LISTEN ) - ending with a line repeated over and over, "Why wouldn't they disappear, why" and I dare you to feel anything but sad and emotional for that part :')
The song ends with the drums kicking in for an emotional release at the end with the final chorus (Jungkook's pretty adlibs throughout) and Jimin's iconic high note closing it off - piercing, pained, leaving you sort of empty with unresolved feelings. The whole song is 4 minutes and 15 seconds long.
The rapline were excellent as usual in this like I described, but I think Suga did a great job using the vocal line in a way that matched all their vocal tones perfectly.
##Lyrics
The production of the song was excellent, but I think it's the lyrics which complete the song, so I'm gonna include them here (courtesy of doolset bangtan ). BTS have always been incredible songwriters, and I think this is a stellar example. You could dismiss it as just another heartbreak song, but I think they paint such vivid pictures through their lyrics, especially RM's verse at the end.
>"On this melody that has ended,
I’m enduring by myself
Now, tell me
Let me know
That it’s over, let me know
>Every second, raindrop falls and wells up around my eyes
You well up
Even when I just breathe, I see you
Perhaps it’s true that love blooms like cherry blossoms and wither away easily
As if it was a dream, we burned like a flame yet only the ashes are left
Hey girl, I know the conclusion that you made by yourself
On the melody where your hands, your body, and even your warmth that was hotter than the equator disappeared
I keep coming back to the same place, stuck between the repeat signs
On the music score where the final bar line has been marked, I’m circling around by myself
>Girl let me know (x2)
Though I know that everything is already over
So that my feeling doesn’t linger on
Girl let me know (x2)
Girl let me know, please say anything
I just wanna know (x2)
My lingering feeling is withstanding in front of the final bar line
So please say anything to me, girl let me know
>Where did the promises we made to each other go
They disappeared along with time
The dominoes that fell as a result of our parting
are like Juliet and Romeo
Perhaps I loved you too burningly
that the heat between the two of us can’t cool down
I look back only now at the memories with you
I think of you already, wondering what you are doing
You take away the stars of my night, you take away the sun of my day
And the only thing that eventually remained is the darkness of a cold cloud
Yeah, the rule that says where there’s a hello, there’s a goodbye
Never ever
Whatever that rule is, I want to disobey it
I turn away from it
I hypnotize myself...
>Perhaps we are all stupid fools
We all carry inside our heart a love that has already ended
It’s not that I still have a feeling for you
I also know that we can’t be together again
But sometimes, like I have an upset stomach, like something is stuck in my chest again,
why does my feeling suddenly explode from inside and make me throw up
In my imagination, I fight with you, I make up with you, and I understand you
Your hand gestures and your way of looking at me– they are blurry, but why wouldn’t they disappear
Why wouldn’t they disappear, why
Why wouldn’t they disappear, why
Why wouldn’t they disappear, why..."
##Live performances
I promise I'm almost done. Among the songs within the album without an MV, "Let me know" is the only one that was performed live quite a few times during BTS' appearances at radio shows and other places during their promotion period. They were barely over a year old as a group at this time, but damn have they always been great performers. I personally think they nailed every one of their lives, starting from the one at their showcase.
Outside of their own concerts, they also performed it at two other radio shows that I could find (one being potato quality but the audio is fine), and on the show called "A song for you". The last one is pretty cool because a lot of fans from outside Korea were featured, showing how popular they already were internationally. These cute fans from Poland totally nailed what they were each like at the time.
I highly recommend watching each one of these live performances if you like the song.
Bonus: This is also like the one song where we have a live demonstration of the guide vocals for the most iconic part, by the songwriter himself, not just once, but two times. We're super lucky 😙
If you've read this far, thank you so much. If my post somehow convinced atleast one person to check out this queen, I will consider it a job well done. And if you have any thoughts or opinions about the song, please do share them below. I would love to read them.
I love Dark and Wild and ik its not their most polished work the raw and gritty nature is so cathartic and wonderful
so many bangers on that album including Rain, Tomorrow, Danger, WoH (yes and I'm a staunch feminist so shh) and Let Me Know ofc
I love the sense of urgency and need in that song that make me feel as if they're crying out to me but my absolute favorite Namjoon's verse that's so rhythmic but then quiet downs before the final chorus hits and you hear this amazing drum riff and guitar that are aided by their amazing vocals at the end and Jimins amazing high note
what a shame that its so underrated so ty for this!
Yes, I adore the entire album and I think it holds up so well even till today. Wouldn't change a thing on it personally. I'm glad we agree on RM's verse being amazing!
It’s a wonderful song, nice write up! I love to see appreciation of BTS’s older work
I'll always be here to appreciate all their work - the earliest to the latest 💜🤧
Looove this song! I agree that the bridge is amazing and nostalgic. Jimin's high note is a slay also.
The bridge is like 70 percent of the reason I made this entire post 😅 i ADORE it! And I think he always nails it live too.
Thank you thank you thank you for this post!
Let Me Know is one of my absolute favorites! I mention it almost any chance I get! The live performances are incredible. BTS conveys all that angst and emotion so well.
I love this detailed appreciation post🥺💜
No problem! It's what the song deserves 👑 considering how young they still were, they really did nail those darker concepts even back then.
Am I the bad guy if I say Dark & Wild is one of, if not their BEST album
Not AT ALL, and i would be inclined to agree with you. I love all the songs on there, especially that 7-track run from "What am I to you?" till "Cypher pt 3: Killer" just before the Interlude is insane.
I say one of because Skool Luv Affair also exists
I think it's tied with HYYH Part 2 as their best album. I still regret not being able to attend any of The Red Bullet tour dates.
As the title says, I love BTS's songs which talk about their love for music. This doesn't mean that I find them better than all their other songs. It just means that hearing those songs makes me respect them for their dedication to their art. In general, I love to see music artists making songs about their passion for music, especially when they are involved in making those songs.
So, I love songs like Black Swan (It has got to be my favourite song by them), Hip Hop Phile, Born Singer (I think it's a cover), First Love (by Suga), Just Dance (by J-Hope, it's about dance but it still comes under art), Chicken Noodle Soup (by J-Hope, it's technically about dance, right?)
Another category of songs which I love and which can be under this topic are those which talk about the efforts that are put into this like Awake (by Jin).
I would talk more about other groups as well but I usually listen to them on spotify and have not really checked out the lyrics so I can't really say which songs are about what. If somebody would like to add songs from other groups or even BTS songs that I missed to mention, please do so.
I agree! I think the epitome of it is Idol, such a good song that encapsulates their love for music, love for their fans and most importantly, love for themselves.
Oh, I always considered Idol to be more about them accepting who they are as they are and loving themselves. However, I think I agree it can be included.
Hey thinker! Great post up there. Make sure your post title is clear. One and two word titles are not allowed. Use paragraphs to make it easier to read.

Second day of the Wings Final concerts I started crying during First Love and didn’t stop until three or so songs later. I was really so moved by the song and the dedication to the craft.

I would also like to suggest Road/Path (it’s a hidden song) as one of these songs 😄

Heartbeaaaat! How could I forgot about that one????
PS. You have taste
Thank you🫶🫶.
They have been my ults since i been a kpop fan!
Edit : don’t worry they forget about Heartbeat too 😭
I'm tired of being seen as some stupid boy-band that people only listen to for their looks which is not the case!
Whalien 52 is a good example based on how relatable I find it due to my loneliness and feeling like nobody really cares what I have to say. They also have songs like No More Dream, N.O., their cover of Come Back Home, and especially Baepsae which discuss how hard it is for this generation to live up to the previous generation's high expectations (I relate it to how hard it's for the cost of living for Millenials/Gen Z). Since I don't know Korean, I might be missing out on the meaning on some some of their songs.
Deep as in social critique and problems : Tomorrow , Spine Breaker , Could you turn of your cell-phone , School of Tears , Dope , Am I Wrong , Go Go , Pied Piper ( a little ) , Not Today , Paradise , Adult Child .

Deep as in personal , comforting or emotional : Path , Tomorrow , Rain , Let me know , Move , House of Cards , Young Forever , all WINGS solos , 2!3! , Lost , Spring Day , Wings , You Never Walk Alone , Sea , Serendipity , Singularity , The Truth Untold , Magic Shop , So what , Epiphany , Answer : Love Myself , all the rap line's mixtapes!!!
Would also add n.o., bapsae and no more dream to their social critique and problems list, other then that I agree with your list.
Pied piper is particularly interesting because they openly call out the over dependence of stan culture but also admit that BTS themselves need it too.
Idol is also pretty deep if we think about it, definitely embodies the self love message and their journey in a way.
It honestly becomes hard to classify all their songs because of their extensive discography so kudos for trying.
Thank you!!! I didn't mention N.O , No More Dream and Baepsae because OP had already listed to them and wanted similarly deep songs!!! They generally have so many songs with deep - beautifully written lyrics about a lot of things , including love and relationships but ...
A lot of their songs have deep meaning and I saw someone put a place to go song translations up here already.I want to say this too though, it is okay if some of their songs are not deep. I wrestled with this issue of trying to defend against the boyband image and then came to the realization I was holding BTS to a double standard.
For example - I want to hold your hand by the Beatles, Can I get a witness- Marvin Gaye, Natural woman- Aretha Franklin - all good songs! Why can't BTS write deep songs and light fun songs? Well, they can! I do wish people would drop the boyband and call them a group or just band - but if you get push back from somebody that says they just write "stupid" songs etc.. call them on it by asking them about one of the classic songs I mentioned or if you know the genre of music they listen to, point out not all of the songs are heavy and intellectual (that would be impossible).
Yes, I watched a DKDKTV Explanation Video (the only reason I still subscribe to their channel is that they have these explanation videos) for Boy With Luv when it came out, and it made me think about how BTS also doesn't want to have to have deep lyrics for every song. Boy With Luv's Korean title is A Poem for the Little Things. The choreography is intentionally simpler than for other songs. In the lyrics, there are multiple places where it makes me think BTS wants to reclaim shallowness. For example, Hobi's lines seem to show how he's disagreeing that he has the power to make world peace or be someone's superhero. Namjoon's rap starts out by saying he'll be straightforward and direct.
What brought me to be an ARMY was their deep lyrics with social and personal meaning, but I think it's better to not confine them to music that must have deep meanings.
The fact that BWL may be a song about reclaiming shallowness is pretty deep.
this x1000! do not feel the need to defend these boys. popular, light music can be just as beneficial (or more so) than super heavy content. also, you can often have varied types of content within a single song - that's the beauty of music!
Examining the lyrics in English, have found most of the songs have very introspective elements which cleverly tie in themes of philosophy and relational psychology (though its not always in your face; its often woven into other, more general lyrics of love, pain, hope and suffering) i.e. Mikrokosmos, Fake Love,
However, I think in terms of blatant "depth" that Intro: Persona, Spring Day, Stigma and Singularity stand out the most. I'm also a newer fan, so I'm sure there are more!
Singularity is actually really deep and almost depressing. its very contradictory of Taes insanely sexy performance lol.
I laughed so hard at some of the YouTube reaction vids that were like, you can tell he’s seducing you/this is baby making music, and then they read the lyrics and are like...oops.
i wish i never read them lol. funny enough at school (in my Korean class) we dissected the lyrics and i was like wtf is this poetic sad ass song lol.
I’m hardcore against the idea that BTS should have to write deep or emotionally heavy music to be taken seriously in the industry. That being said though I will waste no opportunity to yell about how much I love Namjoon’s solo track Always (here’s a translation) it’s probably one of my top 3 songs he’s every worked on.
Edit: Misconception that BTS is ONLY super deep.
People focus so much on their “deep” songs that they forget all about the lesser meaningful songs that BTS has released.
BWL is not the first “shallow” song that BTS has released. Moreover, Dynamite is not the second “shallow” song that BTS has released.
They’ve made several shallow songs about how much they like a girl’s smile or that they want to be her oppa. It’s just these songs get ignored or overshadowed by Black Swan or N.O or Spring Day.
Their music is always changing and it should not be branded as being only deep songs about mental health and wealth disparity.
I'm not hating on them. Yes, they DO have deep music, but they have all kinds of other songs, too.
Check out "Dimple," which is about, well, dimples and how cute a girl is when she smiles. Simple as that. No commentary about society or wealth. It's one of my fave songs from them actually.
One of BTS’ greatest assets is their ability to change musical direction so often and still release bangers and bangers. Thus, don’t just focus on their songs about social commentary. Give all their music some love, including the ones about cute smiles or wanting to be a cute girl’s boyfriend.
It's true they've always made both shallow and meaningful songs.
We've had songs like Dope, Fire, DNA but also No More Dream, Fake Love, Spring Day, Epiphany plus their mixtapes
I think the frustration is more to do with them not promoting their more meaningful songs or having comebacks that are very 'shallow' (which you have to do to win GP/award shows)
I think fans want the western audience to know BTS also make meaningful songs and not just songs like BWL and Dynamite. Casual listeners make up their mind based on title songs.
For example, it Artist X made EDM music but did ballads as b sides , people would associate them with EDM because that's what gets played everywhere. Same with BTS. Suga had the song 'stranger' on his recent mixtape which is a social commentary but a casual listener will not know about that and will think BTS is just another generic boy band who make songs like BWL. Fans don't want casual listeners to have this view of BTS.
BTS did seem more vocal about social issues and political issues in their earlier days which has understandably taken a backseat now that they have to be careful with what they say due to their immense popularity
TL;DR: IMO Fans frustration stems from them wanting the western audience to know BTS also make meaningful songs and not just songs like BWL and Dynamite. They want people to realise BTS are versatile artists/producers/composers and not a generic boy group
As a fan im also frustrated. But I'd also like to point out that the western gp has proven they cannot appreciate BTS' meaningful songs.
Out of all of bts' title tracks, the more shallow BWL and DNA are the only ones to receive gp recognition and significant radioplay in the west. The west just doesnt value bts' more meaningful pieces such as black swan, spring day and even ON.
But this isnt just the case w bts. In general, what is popular in the west is imo quite shallow(cough JB, Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes, 1D). The west is not the best.
Them appreciating Dynamite over bts' other 2020 releases is like choosing ice cream over a balanced meal, understandable, but disappointing. Imho, i dont think bts expected the more meaningful mots7 to be so underappreciated(a good chunk of ON is in English). They've already tried the meaningful route and it failed, so Dynamite is their last ditch attempt to finally get recognition by western gp.
You should check less popular artists like Tori Kelly, JoJo, even older artists! Mariah also released the new song, ”Save The Day”!
I think DNA on its own is a shallow cheesy love song but considering the song in the whole LY series it's actually quite (semi-)deep, or at least serves its purpose very well: the "main character" was blindly in love, believing in destiny before realizing that love is not perfect (Fake love)
I do agree with your other points on why the fandom is frustrated but I think thinking that way is very unfair to bts. They want a silly upbeat song to cheer everyone up in such a trying time and Dynamite does its job insanely well at that, why do fans insist on having another dark song while we already had 2 this year. Anyhow, I believe the majority of the fandom are very satisfied with Dynamite and the boys seem to have a lot of fun doing this song and this is what matters to me. Also we should be expecting a song similar to Spring day, the ultimate fan favorite, coming in October, I hope this will make everyone happy
I agree and I personally enjoyed Dynamite which is why I was surprised by the negative comments on this subreddit about it
They have both types of songs. They started out with social commentary and “deep” songs like No More Dream and N.O. but later on came back with love songs like Boy In Luv and Just One Day. They’ve released all kinds of songs with all kinds of messages throughout their career. Their music being singled into simple categories of “deep” or “shallow” just doesn’t work.
It’s not a misconception, though, if it still is true alongside the fact that they also release fun/“shallow” songs. They’re not mutually exclusive.
Edit: *they’re
Yeah. People like to box them in certain way. They have everything in their discography. Like all their albums will have one cheesy love song and one socially conscious song minimum. So it's basically what you choose to focus on .
Damn ur title is misleading af......
Hey everyone! I'm looking for underrated K-pop songs that truly touched your heart. You know, those hidden gems that don’t get enough love but mean the world to you.
I'll go first : Namjoon's "Closer". I can't even explain how much I love this song. The lyrics, the vibe, everything about it just hits differently.
I'd love to hear your recommendations and add to my playlist🩷
Closer is such a nice choice! For me it Joon's Lonely!
Currently:
Jin - I will come to you
Hobi - Blue Side
JK - Hate You
Tae - Blue
Agust D ft NiiHwa '28' & 'people' Never related to a song so much in my life before. I played this song on my birthday alone last time and had a good cry at 3AM 😌
sejeong - let’s go home. idk what it is about it, it just hits a certain spot for me
Fearnot (Between you me and the lamppost) by LE SSERAFIM and Thank U by IVE!
Paradise - BTS 😭 also Born Singer and pretty much any Namjoon lyrics tbh.
But off the top of my head the message of Wildflower. The analogy, his personal struggles, and wanting to just be the salt of the earth — grounded and natural. I really do think Joon is underrated in that he and his lyrics aren’t known outside of the fandom.
You can choose 2 songs for albums with 10+ tracks
This is a diabolical question, but I‘m gonna try and choose…
• 2 cool 4 skool - WAB pt.2
• O!RUL8,2? - Paldogangsan
• Skool luv affair - Tomorrow
• Dark & Wild - Cypher pt.3 (duh)
• HYYH pt. 1 - Moving On
• HYYH pt. 2 - Baepsae
• HYYH: Young Forever - Butterfly (prologue mix)
• Wings+YNWA - Lie and Lost
• LY: Her - Pied Piper
• LY: Tear - Airplane pt.2 and Tear
• LY: Answer - I'm Fine and Euphoria
• MOTS: Persona - Mikrokosmos
• MOTS: 7 - Louder Than Bombs and Moon
• BE - Telepathy
• Proof - Run BTS and Born Singer
I hope I'm not getting any of this wrong, since I'm sometimes very confused about which songs are title tracks and which ones are bsides.
I'm also excluding most of their Japanese discography since I haven't really delved into it, apart from Face Yourself.
2 kool 4 skool — Like ORUL82! — Coffee Skool Luv Affair — Tomorrow Dark & Wild — Rain Wake Up — The Stars HYYH pt.1 — Hold me Tight HYYH pt.2 — Silver Spoon HYYH: Young Forever — Epilogue: Young Forever, House of Cards Youth — Wishing on a star (idk if this is a title or not) WINGS/YNWA — Lie, Begin LY: Her — Pied Piper FACE YOURSELF — Crystal Snow (again, idk if this is a title) LY: Tear — Magic Shop LY: Answer — Euphoria, The Truth Untold MOTS: Persona — Mikrokosmos MOTS: 7 — Black Swan, Louder Than Bombs BE — Blue & Grey Proof — For Youth
hmm, it's hard to answer as there are so many songs by BTS that I love and adore, plus it also kinda depends on my mood, but i'll try my best and choose the ones I listen to the most~
and as a plus, my favourite song by each of the members from their solo career:
RM - Groin, Seoul (the king of songwriting)
Jin - Astronaut
Suga - So Far Away
j-hope - Sweet Dreams (i love r&b and j-hope vocals here!)
Jimin - Like Crazy
V - Love Me Again (this man is an aesthetic himself)
Jungkook - Standing Next to You
I have just realised that I was supposed to choose only b-sides 😭 whatever now

it was so hard to choose 😭 i wish i could add more, i think ill have to make a separate list for solo songs 🥹
op you’re cruel for making me choose only 10 songs, i keep feeling like editing the list 😭🙏
I'm a baby ARMY who fell into the BTS rabbit hole after I watched BTS Monuments docuseries and Are You Sure on Disney+. As a general music fan, I am aware of BTS and their immense rise to fame in the past few years (Boy With Luv was a favourite of mine when it came out in 2019), but my interest was piqued to find out more about them after watching these 2 shows - BTS Monuments fascinated me with all the adversities and vulnerability they shown throughout their journey, and the maknaes' camaraderie and friendship charmed me so much on the Are You Sure show :)
These past 1 1/2 months I have been delving and discovering the gazillion of BTS content online (mostly Run BTS episodes) and most importantly, their decade long discography (both as a group and solo artists).
Blown away and overwhelmed are understatements to say the least.
I can’t get over how diverse their discography is - every album is unique and so "listenable" - I practically do not skip any tracks at all when listening to their albums- and that's saying a lot in this age of streaming where you can just shuffle and play the next song if it doesn’t catch your fancy. I don’t speak Korean, so the fact that the melodies and song itself draws me in to listen attentively is saying a lot, because I typically love songs because of their lyrics too. I know translations are available online, and definitely I have gone and read through some of them, but I have to commend BTS on their musicality - no matter what the genre, their artistry shines through, and I'm enjoying it so so much.
I'm also the kind of music listener who hears something and think of other musical/ visual references, and these are some of my first impressions as I listen to BTS' songs. Let me know if any of this resonates with any of you, and also perhaps share some of your thoughts of what are some musical/ visual references you think of when you hear BTS songs:
Am I overthinking all of the above? Anyways, suffice to say I'm totally enjoying this fall down the rabbit hole and discovering these gems!
PS: I'm an introverted working mom in my 40s and it's unusual of me to post anything on Reddit, but I felt so strongly about the music that I felt I had to share. Hope this also resonates with fellow BTS fans :)
Run is my all time favourite BTS song and a big reason why is the brit-pop/pop-rock vibe.
When Jin released I'll be there, it reminded me immediately of Elton John's Crocodile Rock.
Taehyung's Fri(end)s is very reminiscent of Frankie Valli/The Four Seasons style with the falsetto.
And of course, Jungkook's Standing Next To You sounds like a big tribute to MJ, the MV quite explicitly referenced him.
Love all these references☺️ I just discovered Taehyung’s Fri(end)s last week, really love the retro/ motown vibe! But honestly, because I understood the lyrics, the first thing I thought of when listening to it was “why is this song making my middle-aged heart long for a situationship drama just so I can sing “let’s put the end in friends!”out loud!” lLOL🤣🤣 Can’t deny Taehyung’s warm vocals are something else..when he sings his solos, makes one wants to be the lead in whatever love story he is singing about. It’s like whether this ends or heartbliss or heartbreak, I’m all in🤣🤣 (please don’t judge this dramatic post of mine) haha!
Great references, love it! So I just discovered Taehyung’s Fri(end)s last week and loving the retro/motown vibe. That said, since I understood the lyrics, honestly the first thing that struck me was “why is this song making my middle-age heart long for a situationship drama right now just so I can sing “lets put the end in friends!” out loud”🤣 LoL I jz gotta say, there’s something about Taehyung’s warm vocals- when he sings his solos he makes one want to be the main lead in whatever love story he is singing about😂 whether it will lead me to heartbreak or heartbliss- I’m just gonna throw myself in it! 🙈🙈
>Run is my all time favourite BTS song
saaaaame I love seeing Run appreciation sometimes I feel like nobody talks about it but I'm always and forever obsessed with it.
Seeing Run as anime coded is so interesting to me, I never thought of it like that but it works, probably because of the anthemic sound and the sense of longing and defiance? Run is technically not their best song, maybe, but it's my favorite song, it hits me everytime. There's just something about it. I really love how it's supposed to be a love song but it's not really? It's about them and their path and their career and their fears and it's just sooo intimate and personal. I can also feel that when I watch the live performances of the song during the most beautiful moment in life era.
Apart from Run, I tend to prefer their angrier/angstier hip hop sound over their ballads and soft songs, but after some years and some maturity I can't deny that spring day is truly That Song. Timeless Queen. Since you're a baby army, maybe you haven't listened to the official britrock remix of spring day, uploaded only on soundcloud, which is the superior version of the song imo (lighter production) and they also performed this version in 2017 kbs song festival if I'm not mistaken, which is a beautiful performance you can find on youtube.
Also mikrokosmos and make it right didn't really blow me away iinitially but again now after some time they really grew on me. 134340 is a favorite of mine, and generally Love yourself tear is one of my absolute fav albums.
Generally I would say their sound and their presence has a type of gravitas that is not ao easy to find, or to replicate.
I related Run to anime precisely because of the things you said, and run also gives me a bit of rebel vibe. When I hear it, i think of youth and the daring heart that comes with youth, and in my mind, anime characters never (or hardly) grow old , hence my associating it with anime.
I took a listen to the Spring Day britrock remix, it’s crazy that it can sound more anthemic than it already does. I like that the lighter production highlights their harmonies more. This remix actually made me think of Take That’s “Never Forget”; thanks for the recommendation:)
Make it Right only stood out to me after watching their performance of it on the Stephen Colbert show- I loved how much it highlighted their vocals- both rap and harmonies. This version made me wish for an unplugged/ acoustic album of BTS songs- it will be great to hear all these songs interpreted differently.
The first BTS album i listened to end-to-end was Map of The Soul 7. Personally I feel it’s probably the album with the best crossover appeal to a new fan like me- somehow I felt they found the sweet spot of blending pop+ harnonies+rap so well in this album (eg Boy With Luv, On). That said, I think musically the Love Yourself albums are pretty special- as if they experimented all the different genres in the LY era, and then distilled it all into Map of the Soul. I still can’t tell if I have a best or favourite in mind (be it album or song), seems there’s a BTS song/ mood for whatever one is feeling that day. Maybe that’s the beauty and appeal of them:)
Yes MOTS is great for a new fan because it is very diverse and explores different sounds, styles and concepts and feels very personal to the members so you really get to know them. And of course it has great songs.
As for unplugged/acoustic versions, yeah unfortunately we don't have that in an album but we do have some live performances that are quite special. Maybe you've already watched their tiny desk (dynamite, save me and spring day). If not, I would start there, they look lovely and very happy and the acoustic version of spring day is sooo good.
Then we have the acoustic version of i need u, boy in luv and danger which is really nice with jin playing guitar: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QL2K8cZr23E
We also have this performance of I need u, Tomorrow and War of hormone that I absolutely love: https://youtu.be/PynVMeWFG2Q?si=D77KsyWfTbFaMqab
Aaand this performance of No more dream, Just one day and Like: https://youtu.be/BFqF-3qTzRg?si=cIgGcIQbhAL_zV_b
And also this acoustic Seesaw performance where Yoongi plays guitar: https://youtu.be/hQDGa0nw5CA?si=dbHkdK-wGytxhBea
And his piano version of life goes on (which has very little to do with the OT7 version): https://youtu.be/aMmTw2DvppU?si=8Z4jtSUsedTUlb4Y
There are many others I don't remember but these are the ones I love the most. Also Taehyung has done some acoustic versions of his solo songs and a few jazz covers, Namjoon has done a tiny desk, Yoongi has a similar performance with IU and lastly, since you like music crossovers, you can watch this bossa nova style performance of Like crazy by Jimin which is truly lovely: https://youtu.be/szcdEG5ccxU?si=xYlkonH9ZThwgRuP
Ok that was long 🤣
If you like unplugged/live versions, I'd suggest the Youtube clips Blue&Grey @ MTV Unplugged and Yoongi's Amygdala live in concert (Japan).
Even Dynamite (NPR Tiny Desk) and Yet To Come (MNet) hit differently.
>There's just something about it. I really love how it's supposed to be a love song but it's not really? It's about them and their path and their career and their fears and it's just sooo intimate and personal.
I totally get what you mean with this. The chorus itself that talks about running again and again, despite falling and getting hurt constantly seems like it goes way beyond just romantic love. That the word "Run" has come to be such an important word epitomizing BTS' approach to their career makes it that much more special.
I also recall how they contrasted HYYH Pt 1 vs Pt 2, saying that while PT 1 was about the "uncertainty of youth", that Part 2 (from their website):
>Sings about the energy of youth barreling forward, embracing even the uncertainty and insecurity. Now beginning to taste the bitterness of grown-up life, they can easily sense that life isn't always beautiful. However, they continue to sprint forward, relying only on their two destitute legs and the fire in their hearts. There's nothing else to do but keep running. Facing the powerlessness of one's youth, they collide and shatter and still cry out that "it's okay to fall, it's okay to get hurt". That is the beauty of this moment.
SO. DAMN. BEAUTIFUL.
I hadn't seen that description on their website, thanks. This is exactly what I feel listening to Run. Song of all time, to me. And the MV cements that, I still remember Jungkook sitting on the floor in the middle of the party lost and alone and yet fearless. Idk they did sth with that MV that I'm trying to find again in kpop and just can't.
I love that you are discovering BTS as a music enthusiast!
Whenever people ask me what kind of music I like to listen to, I will say "a little bit of everything". Fortunately BTS' music is also "a little bit of everything" and depending on my mood I always have something to listen to. I get so annoyed at Apple Music when I ask it to recommend me music based on a BTS song, because most of the time it will recommend me K-Pop, when it should be so many other genres...
Here are some of my associations:
Oh wow I love your comparisons because they totally make sense, especially the Tears For Fears comparison, I love both songs and I can't believe I never caught it bc you are right with the intros on both songs hahaha
I will chip in my own song analog as well: Positions by Ariana Grande and Home by BTS fit very nicely and I think they pair very nicely from the POVs of a couple
I sort BTS songs into my daily playlists with other artists based on genre and vibe and lot of your descriptions match other songs in those playlists

This was one of the first albums I bought because I listened to the tracks on Bangtantv and loved the majority of them. Sorry I don't have streams to give but I listen to this CD in my car all the time!!!!! (Sorry I often skip So 4 More/2nd Grade cuz all the gunshots while I'm driving throw me off, though I love the punniness of the title!)
and 2014 bangtan knew they had to remake this album in 2026, right? right?
jokes aside, what a great album
wasn't even aware of kpop existence at this point in time but I wish this album got its creds more often, especially when released, cuz this itself should have be the one to lift them out of "Broke-ass land" lmaoo
also this album stands testament to the whole "BTS has westernized" nagging that people do nowadays cuz you cannot tell me that this doesn't sound like certain Western artists
during one of the festas where they play us a live concert from each era I was surprised at how consistent their overall vibe has been. I bet that noise is still all about the english trio.
people dont realize that commercialization ≠ westernization
and reminder than kpop has always been inspired by the west and as far as commercialization goes, well that one is self explanatory
every good artist has a few songs they sacrifice to the grocery store aisles to suck retail workers' souls, these are theirs lmaoo
The danger mo-blue mix.. MWAHHHHHHH! I love that version so much, yet almost no armys know about its existance..
AND BLANKET KICK!!! I NEED ANOTHER PEFROMANCE OF THAT SONG
I love that remix, I yearn for the day we finally get it on Spotify (pls @ bighit) !!!
The amount of times I kept asking why its not on my playlist just to remember that after all these years, bighit has never added the song onto spotify! I need it on there lol
Thanks for this walk down memory lane. I have been listening to this album this week randomly. Quite underappreciated still.
To 2014 bangtan worried bc for whatever reason this banger of an album didn't do well at first: future's gonna be ok
Yes I hope they know and look back fondly!
