Overall Difficulty
Cuphead is widely recognized for its challenging gameplay, but opinions on its difficulty vary. Many players find it difficult yet rewarding, as it requires persistence and skill to master [1:4],
[3:11]. The game is not considered impossible, but rather a pleasant challenge that rewards patience and practice
[2:2],
[3:4]. Some players even compare its difficulty to classic platformers, suggesting that familiarity with such games can make Cuphead more manageable
[1:1].
Expert Mode and S-Rank Challenges
While the regular mode of Cuphead is already challenging, many players note that Expert mode significantly increases the difficulty level [1:10],
[4:7]. Achieving S-ranks, which require no damage taken during boss fights, adds another layer of difficulty, making it a formidable task for even seasoned players
[4:4],
[5:5]. Players who enjoy a challenge often strive for these higher ranks, finding satisfaction in mastering the game's mechanics
[4:5].
Comparison to Other Games
Cuphead's difficulty is often compared to other challenging games like Hollow Knight. While both games have intricate boss patterns, Cuphead is noted for being more forgiving once players learn the attack patterns [3:1],
[3:3]. Hollow Knight may present a tougher challenge due to its less forgiving respawn system
[3:3]. However, players who manage well in Hollow Knight are likely to find Cuphead's difficulty level acceptable
[3:5],
[3:6].
DLC and Additional Content
The DLC for Cuphead introduces new challenges and characters, such as Ms. Chalice, which some players find helpful in navigating the game's difficulties [5:2]. While the DLC is perceived to be slightly harder than the base game, it continues to offer enjoyable content without drastic changes to the difficulty level
[2:7].
Player Experience and Mindset
The mindset required to play Cuphead involves understanding that the game is about progression through repeated attempts. Players must learn each boss's phases and adapt their strategies accordingly [3:11]. Despite its reputation, Cuphead is designed to feel achievable, with every challenge feeling surmountable given enough practice
[3:8],
[3:12]. This approach makes the game engaging and encourages players to persist through its trials.
Was bored in quarantine so a few days ago I decided to download Cuphead on my switch.
After a solid couple hundred deaths I’ve finally beaten all the bosses in the game, and I feel like the difficulty of the game has been greatly over exaggerated. It was difficult but I never encountered a boss or stage that was so hard it made me stop playing. I wish more people would give this game a chance instead of worrying about the difficulty.
I think it's hard but probably because I suck
It might not be that hard, it's just unforgiving about mistakes, which can be off-putting. That being said, I love this game and it might be on my top 5 most difficult games list.
am i the only person who thought the dragon was one of the easier fights??
My friend beat it first time, we are replaying and he's spending way too much time
It's definitely a game that will reward persistence as much as it rewards skill. For us less skilled players, when I'm playing I can know what attacks are coming and where exactly on the screen to be and still fudge up my inputs, so I know I always have a less than 100% probability of victory simply thanks to my nerves and reactions being shit; but it's never 0%, and I always know I'll get through eventually.
Only 7 hours? It took me an entire week at least......man I must be terrible at games....
It's not so bad, particularly if you're familiar with old school platformers. Have you tried Expert? I'd say it's a pretty steep jump in difficulty for most all of the bosses.
Does expert only really add a time component? I've been beating bosses on expert and that seems to be only thing added.
You mean to make the bosses harder?
Just got it on sale last week. Fun as shit. Definitely difficult but fair. And the art styles just incredible
Definitely the kind of game you enjoy so much that you want to reward it by buying the DLC.
>Not as hard as the reputation it has.
Totally agree. I think it was the prefect level of difficulty for me.
I expected it to be way harder based on the stories i heard about it on release. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't some rage inducing impossible game either. Just a pleasant challenge
Exactly how I felt. Liked it so much that should be playing the DLC soon.
I think the dlc is a bit harder than base game, but nothing crazy. It was great
Don’t say that, it is that hard, u are very good playing and that’s it, I also got it 2 years ago, my 2nd favorite after Dark Souls 1
I just thought it would be harder because of all the boogeyman stories around it. But by no means it's a walk in the park
It’s mostly kids especially with how cuphead looks.
I love watching my plat vid for this. I was so locked in at the end I was just jumping around the falling chip perfectly and I love reliving that moment. I have no idea how many hours it took to finally beat him but it was a lot. Congrats 🎉
The fun thing is that I did that parry on the video by accident and so glad I did because it would have taken me out. I was so locked in that I didn't even noticed the super was charged
I’ve always wanted to go for it but always found it intimidating. How long did it take you?
Not OP but took me approx 20 hrs including dlc. If I were to redo this I think I could do it under 10 hrs as there is def some stuff to get used to at first but once you get a hang of the concept it's not too bad.
If you love a challenge go for it. It's not easy at all but once you get use to it, you'll get better amd better.
This game has 43 trophies: 24 bronze, 12 silver, 6 gold, and a platinum.

Is this game a lot harder than Hollow Knight? I adore Hollow Knight and have no problem with its difficulty level but I don't want to spend the money on Cuphead only to find out that it is too hard...
Cuphead's bosses are a lot easier when you figure out and learn the attack patterns of them. You probably won't win on the first or second try, no matter how good at games you are. You can shoot with unlimited ammo, so it's more about surviving and outlasting the opponent you keep attacking while dodging bullets and obstacles. The bosses and levels are also really short, around 2-3 minutes to complete. One thing I didn't like about Hollow Knight was respawning far away from the boss and sometimes even dying on the way there. Cuphead has a lot of trial and error and jumps you straight into the action, so it's a lot less annoying in that regard.
My suggestion if you end up buying it: remap the controls - there's a whole thread about it if you search the subreddit. I had to get through about 20% of the game before realizing that better controls make the game much more doable.
They're about the same. If you like Hollow Knight's difficulty you'll be fine with Cuphead.
Non-Godmaster Hollow Knight content is comparable to Cuphead more or less, but Godmaster stuff is infinitely harder than anything in Cuphead save for maybe going for S Ranks.
In general, if you did fine in Hollow Knight you'll do fine in Cuphead I'd say.
It's similar to Hollow Knight's boss fights I would say, but a little bit more forgiving when you understand the bosses pattern.
It's all about patience, practice and luck in Cuphead, Hollow Knight is just cruel lol
Don't expect to beat the 1st boss on the first 5 tries for example.
I would suggest to watch some gameplay videos of the first bosses, so it won't ruin so much for you.
Well, it's definitely the same reason for Cuphead. If the game were easy enough that you could beat all of the bosses on the first attempt, the entire game would literally only be an hour long without even attempting to speedrun it.
That said, I haven't found the challenge to feel unfair so far. Yes, it requires quite a few attempts for the harder bosses, but it's more "git gud" than it is "the designers are sadists".
Pretty much. I feel like if you were to take Cuphead back in time to a gamer back in the 80s or 90s, they'll find Cuphead pretty easy, after they're done having their minds blown over the graphics.
Honestly I've found it way easier than I was expecting. Which is not to say that it's easy; merely that I had heard so much about its legendary difficulty that I wasn't even sure I should attempt it, since I'm not generally into stupidly hard challenges.
And, yes, it's challenging. Several of the bosses have required quite a few attempts, and I've only just cleared the second island so I'm sure I have some horrific challenges ahead of me. But so far it's honestly a lot easier than some of the Nintendo-hard shit I had to go through as a kid in the 80's. It mostly feels tough but fair.
Yeah, the game's hard, but not UNFORGIVING, mostly in how it doesn't cost lives to retry a level.
Id say the opposite for me. Just got done dying ten times on the first level
What makes this game "hard" is the mindset. It's a progression game. You play a boss and die a few times until you finish the first phase. Then you know how to beat it and rinse and repeat for all the phases. People who are used to taking out bosses on the first or second try won't be fans of this "difficulty." But they did a good job of making all the challenges feel like they can be accomplished. Nothing feels impossible and I know what I screwed up every time I die.
Cuphead is very formulaic. once you get the hang of it, you can play it with muscle memory
7 years ago I played Cuphead for the first time, but it was too hard and I gave up. 3 years ago, I decided I wasn’t a quitter, finished what I started and beat Cuphead for the first time. 1 month ago, I decided to play it again for the first time in 3 years. I had forgotten about expert mode, I thought it would be fun to play a few bosses at a higher difficulty. Then I thought, hell, I can ace the first boss and got an S Rank, boy that was cool, I can’t possibly S Rank all of them…
I’m happy to announce, that today I S Ranked The Devil without any extra heals or DLC cheese. I am getting ready to play the DLC for the first time. But I have no nostalgia for the DLC, so S ranking that entire thing I’ll consider a bonus (DLC weapons and charms are fair game now).
I S Ranked Cuphead. Fuck Yeah!
(Oh, acing The Devil on Expert was way harder than the internet led me to believe it was going to be. That first phase I could not consistently get passed without taking a stupid hit)
I actually did the same thing. Bought about 3 years ago finished Isle 1 and quit. Just finished the dlc last week
I’m terrified of the salt guy, I’ve heard things.
That's just the people who try S rank expert. Normal is easier than the devil imo
Only really hard if you want to S-Rank it (no hit) otherwise it's not too bad in comparison with what you've already achieved.
Trust me, the DLC makes it way easier. Astral Cookie made every boss except the plane ones a lot easier.
True, that's why personally I kept playing with Cuphead. Found it more interesting.
Congrats! I just got this game on PS5 and I plan to get S rank on all bosses including DLC as well. I recently got the DualSense Edge and have adjusted everything to max comfort so I’m READY!
I have no idea what DualSense Edge is, but my reccomendation is to change the controls to your liking. I didn’t like the standard buttons. My custom setup was:
Fire: L2
Special Weapon: R2
Change Weaopn: (Press) Right Joystick
Me and my girlfriend have started playing it again after like a 3-year layoff. We are both terrible but it's fun to get hyper focused on one thing and the elation when we beat it.
Currently stuck on the clown rollercoaster dick (yes we are that bad).
oh the Devil on Expert was a real deal, and doing a S rank was an even bigger deal, idk how internet tends to make you believe is easier than Dr. Kahl Robot, tho maybe it's because i have played games like Undertale Yellow that led me to get some skills at those types of bullet hell
From the boss fights, the music, the art style, it’s all fantastic. Both the main game and the DLC.
There were 2 times I lost my shit playing this and that was when I was trying to get an A- or higher on Rumor Honeybottoms(I absolutely sucked at that fight) and S ranking The Howling Aces. But other than that I was able to keep my cool for the rest of the game.
9.5/10
Bought it in the sale. The DLC and Ms. Chalice is so helpful. Finished the first island with A rank and the two run and guns on pacifist.

I’d say the levels of gameplay would be as follows:
All S/P ranks, all achievements
All S/P ranks
All S ranks
Some S ranks, beaten all bosses on expert
Beaten all bosses on expert
Beaten some bosses on expert
Beaten all bosses A+ on regular
Beaten all bosses on regular
Beaten some bosses on regular, all on simple
Beaten all bosses on simple
Beaten some bosses on simple
Can’t get past tutorial
Where do you fall on this scale? I fall at number 6 because I have not beaten a few expert bosses yet
11, Just got the game
1, but I did it on every save file
1, but on two save files. First time was with double heart charm. The second time was with smoke bomb.
sadly 9
6
I have beaten a few expert bosses but it's the easiest ones

congrats! was my first challenging platinum and will always be one of my favourites
23HRS ???!? I thought it takes 50+ 😭😆
Congrats that’s a big one
Congrats!
Congratulations! This is one of the most challenging Platinum in the history of humankind.
My brother just got Cuphead yesterday in hopes of adding to our list of indie games we've played; little did the two of us know that this game was hard as balls. Bro, y'all make this look so fucking easy doing it without taking damage. HOW DOES ONE BEAT THIS DAMN GAME!!!
Just git gud mate
Just kidding, the game is all about muscle memory, be cartain that these people that finish the game without taking damage, already died A LOT before being able to do this
I'll have to try several times before you remember "Now the boss will do this, now an enemy will appear here"
I'm currently s ranking the devil and king dice. P ranked and s ranked everyone else. I had a little under 500 deaths after a+ everything the first go round on normal (including the run n guns), and I did a ton of resetting. I'm sure I'm now over a thousand and I've still be resetting. It's also my first time playing lol
I won't even try to S rank everything, would like to, but my mental health is more important
So in other words…
Just git gud mate
It is formally known as The Great Cuphead War in my house. 300 percent on all 3 saves. About 3 years ago. It is my greatest achievement to this day.
Why is it a war? Did it have any casualties? (smashed controllers do count)
It can be really hard lmao, I got it without knowing how hard it was and didn't play for months, honestly it's really hard to beat bosses the first time but you do get the hang of it, the people making it look easy have just been through the rounds
>HOW DOES ONE BEAT THIS DAMN GAME!!!
Infinite amounts of trial and error, building skills more and more across a period of multiple hours a day, trying new strategies, retrying old strategies,
and a WHOLE lot of dying.
İn sekiro terms
Git gud
I think those are hollow knight terms...
imo the most satisfying part of the game is in your own skill progression. I’m stuck on the Devil in the base game, but I know I will beat him eventually - the fight is fair and it’s just a matter of fine-tuning my reflexes and responses, as it was for every other fight in the game.
I was looking at my boss fight scores and noticed that I got a B- for Goopy Le Grande and an A- for Dr. Kahl’s Robot, lol. The game truly does get easier with practice (and a lot of patience).
At some point, you just become
The other day I decided to play through the game and do as bad as I could to see what the lowest possible competition percentage you can get at the end is, and in some ways I found it to be harder than the actual game itself.
You basically need to find ways to intentionally get Peppino hurt as often as you can, which isn’t as straightforward as it seems because not all the enemies hurt you, collecting the caged toppings, which is required to progress in the game, gives you a ton of points and often times boosts your rank by a whole letter each time you collect one. And then during pizza time, you’re kind of forced to speed back through the level because of the timer, which means you’re likely unintentionally killing enemies along the way and earning more points from it, and you have less time to keep getting Peppino hurt again.
My goal was to try to finish all levels with D ranks, and because of these factors, it was much harder than playing the level normally. Bosses are also hard to because your rank is dependent on how much you got hurt during the fight, but you obviously still need to beat it anyway. I read that getting anything above D on a level counts towards the completion status, so every D rank you get does lower your final score.
All in all, my efforts only got my score to 52% at the end, giving me the “confused” screen. It seems like this is one of those games that’s both difficult to be good and bad at. It certainly seems impossible to get the “you suck” screen unless you’re intentionally trying and focusing on doing poorly.
Why not do multiple runs of the same level to get all of the toppins?
You might be on to something
In several levels though many of the toppings are along the way of progressing so often times youre forced to collect them no matter what
I watched a video seeing if you can beat the game with only D-ranks
one must become one with the sucking to get the "you suck" judgement
As someone who’s good at sucking I can confirm it wasn’t that hard
Hmm indeed
I have slept long enough
WHAT
Thats why hes smiling and giving you a thumbs up
Maybe that's why Peppino's giving you the thumbs up
For getting a rank that's actually harder to get than HOLY SH*T

10 hours? how did you optimize? guide says 25-35
I played it back in the day when it released for Xbox, but I never finished it. I guess I kept some practice but idk, honestly I didn't feel it as hard as people say
awesome and congrats btw. maybe ill finally try my hand at it.
It took me 12-16h when I was playing solo
Probably 25h if I add the SharePlay time I did with my cousin
Which was harder, the expert mode trophy or doing the run and gun levels as a pacifist?
Not OP, but I also have the plat.
Most expert mode bosses are fine, but some are really difficult, while the P-rank run and guns are honestly fairly easily, so long as you have twin hearts and the invincibility super art.
Perilous piers was horrible, especially as a pacifist. That octopus section just sucked.
The flying levels for bosses are really hard on expert, especially Kahl’s robot and Wally warbles
It becomes trivial with Ms. Chalice.
I cleared the Switch version ages ago, but will consider this one when the Full Course goes on sale!
Cuphead game difficulty level
Key Considerations about Cuphead's Difficulty:
Classic Run-and-Gun Gameplay: Cuphead is known for its challenging gameplay that pays homage to 1930s cartoons. Expect tough platforming and intense boss battles.
Boss Fights: The game features numerous unique bosses, each with distinct attack patterns. Learning these patterns is crucial for success.
Two Difficulty Modes:
Co-op Play: Playing with a friend can make the game easier, as you can revive each other and share the challenge.
Skill Development: Success in Cuphead often requires practice and patience. Players may need to retry boss fights multiple times to learn and master their mechanics.
Takeaway: Cuphead is designed to be difficult, appealing to players who enjoy a challenge. If you're new to platformers or prefer a more casual experience, be prepared for a steep learning curve. Consider starting with a friend in co-op mode to ease the difficulty a bit.
