TL;DR
Main Story and Casual Playthrough
For a casual playthrough focusing on the main storyline, players generally report taking between 20 to 30 hours. This time frame assumes that you are not rushing and are exploring at a moderate pace [1:1],
[3:1]. Some players manage to complete the main story in as little as 15 hours if they focus solely on the primary objectives
[3:5].
True Ending and Exploration
Reaching the true ending of Hollow Knight typically requires more time, often ranging from 30 to 50 hours. This involves additional exploration and completing extra challenges beyond the main story [2:4],
[3:1]. Players who enjoy exploring every nook and cranny of Hallownest may find themselves spending upwards of 60 hours even without aiming for full completion
[4:1].
Completionist Goals
Achieving 112% completion, which includes collecting all items and defeating all bosses, can take significantly longer. Many players report spending 60 to 80+ hours to achieve full completion [1:7],
[3:3]. Some dedicated players have even clocked in hundreds of hours to achieve every possible achievement and challenge, such as mastering the Pantheon of Hallownest
[5:2].
Variability Based on Play Style
The time it takes to beat Hollow Knight varies greatly depending on individual play styles. Speedrunners can complete the game in under an hour by exploiting glitches and skips, while first-time players who explore thoroughly might spend over 100 hours [1:1],
[5:5]. The game's open-ended nature allows players to choose how much they want to engage with its content, making it as long or as short as they desire
[4:9].
I want to pick the game up but I'm curios about the length of the game.
Approximately 60-70 hours for 112% completion.
Umm... But what about just beating the main stuff?
Depends, normally round about 20-40 hours to see everything the game has to offer, though you could do a speedrun to finish the game in under 10 or 5 hours.
I have played for 130 hours and still not done everything...
Speedrunner: 30 minutes
Casual player: 20-30 hours
Completionist: 60+ hours
The game is as long as you want it to be. It mostly depends on how much extra stuff you do. If you’re the type of player who doesn’t care about missing things, then you can probably reach the final boss in 20 hours or less. But if you let your curious side take over, you can wander in the areas of Hallownest for quite a long time before you run out of things to do.
How can a speed runner complete in 30 minutes is there a guide I can follow? I would like to attempt this in the near future
Well, to get times nearing 30 minutes, you have to do a lot of skips and glitches in order to access areas early. Instead, I’d recommend starting with this guide, which won’t give you the fastest time possible, but will easily allow you to get the speedrun achievement. Unfortunately, I don’t know of any tutorials for the faster route, but I’m sure they exist if you look on YouTube or ask in the HK Discord.
Im 55 hours and stuck sitting at 97% lmao
Me: 70+ hours
Quite.
EDIT: I have done a fair amount of exploring. I can dash and wall climb. I have dashmaster, so I can refresh faster and dash down.
I have beat some other bosses too.
Okay, so a while ago I started Hollow Knight, then I put it down. Not out of frustration, just for other reasons.
With Silksong launching, I decided to play.
I'm used to platform games that are short to a decent amount of time like 5-20 hours and you've beat the game.
However, even on the shorter side the games are immensely satisfying to play: Inside, Limbo, Planet Of Lana, Hue, and so on.
I'm like 25 hours into Hollow Knight and from bits and pieces I have seen, I don't think I'm close.
I just beat the Mantis Lords and have their respect. I feel like I'm missing a movement mechanic to really go further like spots where I'm at the edge of the places that I can't jump to anything near.
I can't smash open things below me even with dashmaster, if that's how you're supposed to do that.
I'm curious about what the average time to beat Hollow Knight is?
Also, maybe some clues on what I should do/where to go next?
If you google "(game name) how long to beat" you'll literally get a dedicated website that polls gamers and shows what the average length of a game is for different playstyles (main story, completionist, etc).
Go on and try it for HK, the numbers are pretty interesting.
Hello fellow player. My playtimes are
160 hours on my main playthrough. 109/112%
Around 80 on my second playtrough
9:33 on my speedrun playtrough.
Really depends on how fast you are. If it took you 25 hours to beat the mantis lords i expect you to need 100+ hours to beat the game.
It wasn't 25 hours to beat the Mantis Lords. It was a fair amount of exploring and trying to figure out the where's and how's of opening the world up.
I can wall jump and climb walls, have dash master, beat some bosses along the way.
But, I'm guessing I still have PLENTY more to do, lol.
Check your dms. Yeah i worded it badly. If it took you 25 hours to reach them and beat them then it will take you maaaaany more hours to beat the game
I think it would be reasonable to say 30 - 50 hours, it really depends on the player. Once you get all the items/spells to reach new places the game gets faster. I would recommend you to go to city of tears. And by the way, did you got mantis claw? It allows you to stick to the walls and do wall jumps
City of Tears and that boss that teleports onto me and is relentlessly the worst that is above those soul things?
I've been stuck on that for a while too lol.
EDIT: u/yHallazeal I went and played on one of my work breaks and beat that guy, lol.
First playtrough took ~60 hours. Depends on what ending you want
Depends on how much you explore, took me like 180 hours my first run
It takes most people like 10-40 hours, took me more than 80...
20 hours if you're quick, 40 if you're thorough.
That's the general, at least.
15-25 hours for first ending, 30-35 for true ending, 60-80+ for full 112% completion
Like everyone else is saying, it depends how thorough you are, how easily you pick up the combat, and whether you are playing blind.
According to howlongtobeat.com the main story takes 26.5 hours on average. I'm 30 hours in and haven't beaten or even seen half the bosses, according to the list I just looked up. Am I just extra bad or is that time bullshit on a first play through?
Hornet took forever to beat, maybe 40+ attempts, but I think she taught me how to play this game. Most recently I beat Soul Master, Dung Defender, and Broken Vessel all with 3-4 attempts, and Mantis Lords in about 8-10.
So do I have another 30 hours to go, or do things start accelerating from here?
Put simply, you can 100% the game in 20 hours easily if you move quickly and know the fights. First playthrough is going to be much slower.
everything is so spread out that it's hard to know how long you have to go
time doesn't really matter, it's not a competition
Yeah I get that and I haven't been rushing it, just wondering how long I have to go.
I can only justify playing a 100 hour game once a year before it starts creating problems.
I took around 85 hours for my first playthrough, but I completed the game 112%.
Some people (like me) will take 70 hours for their first playthrough (including doing something extra for a different ending), while others will say a “casual run” took them 15 hours
Maybe this gives you an idea about multiple ways you can play the game. My first save is at 140hrs and i still have stuff to do but today i also created another save and finished the game within approx 4 hours for two speedrun achievements. So it all depends. I would say you can easily get 75-100hrs into your first save before you "finish" it once
Good to know, thanks. I thought it was a shorter game when I started, but luckily I'm really enjoying it. Might even be my favourite game, not accounting for recency bias.
Same boat. I started mid February this year, as it went to GamePass and i thought it would be some quick "sidegame". I felt in Love with it, sometimes i wanna kill it, but its one of my all time top5
all the comments leave out a CRUCIAL detail to how long it takes you: completion
nearly everyone is saying it took them about 80 hours on a first playthrough, but they neglect to specify its for 112% completion, which is getting every single item and upgrade that isn't geo or a relic, and getting almost every ending. to finish the first ending, you might encounter just about 15 to 20 of the 40 total bosses in the game, and it will, on average, take you about 20 to 30 hours. getting the "true" ending takes a LOT of time and effort, and you will stumble upon even more bosses on that path, albeit only 3 mandatory(though its likely you will find a lot more than that). then there are EVEN MORE bosses scattered in the expansions: hidden dreams with 2 bosses, lifeblood with 1, grimm troupe with 2 and godmaster with 5.
you said you just beat broken vessel, and that is really close to the base ending, you just have to now unseal the dreamers(with 2 bosses guarding them) and then you can go to the final boss arena and finish up your first ending
note that you can get every ending on one save file, however one ending gets locked out(the first one) as well as an optional variant of the godmaster expansion ending if you choose to deliver a certain delicate item to the npc you can access the expansion through
Those of you that have completed Hollow knight, how many hours did it take you?
You might not believe this (because its a LOT) but it took me 430 hours to win with absolutely everything (all achievements, all journal entries, all glowing pantheon icons, all radiant bosses on HoG).
Of those I would say half were practicing and trying to win PoH with bindings.
I would like to play once more but this time actually just take the time to enjoy the game, read the dialogues, etc lol.
Wow, you really didn't get bored of Hollow Knight even after all those hours.
Sort of. I mean, I think I beat PoH with bindings more out of pride than fun, as I was very close to rage quitting more than once but it seemed to draw me back in.
The other thing that bored me was getting the mr. Mushroom achievement but it was the only one I was missing so I just stuck with it.
Now ill be just waiting for the hornet dlc while I enjoy the relaxing, relatively easy and very beautiful super mario odyssey
Did the first ending at a whopping 51% clocking in at 9 hours. Currently at hour 16 and have ~89%.
I like to explore everything but I bee-lined it to the dreamers and as soon as I realized how to get to each one and where I needed to go, I fought the "final" boss for the first ending. Little did I know there's much, much more to the game...
You can beat it this fast? Wow, I’m only on my first playthrough and am 16 hours in but haven’t defeated any of the dreamers yet although I’m taking my time and exploring quite a bit
Yeah I found out later that half of the game is optional. Going for the full completion though.
Reddit takes the format "[any number]. [Words]" as a numbered list format. I assume you didn't actually finish it in 1 hour.
No of course not, haha. My bad. I barely use reddit, like once a month and I only got it 4 months ago so I'm very very new to this stuff, thanks for the knowledge. Does it appear right now? It says 68 to me now.
Just "finished" the game about 76% with 40h, without having done any DLC i think... love to think that i have still a lot to explore.
50
And that was with spoilers on where to go.
I’m over 20 hours in and still discovering new areas over and over and fighting new enemy types. I can’t help but feel at awe when I’m going from one location to another that I honestly hope it never ends.
Question: how long did it take you to beat the game on your first run?
47 hours for the main game and all DLC but the last.
Another 45 hours for godhome...
To beat the game for me, took about 40-45 hours, and for 112% completion took me about 60 hours.
~50 hrs but I was slooow
Hey, I’m gona try and doing everything possible so I don’t blame you. I’m gona go to every crevice and fight every boss that I can until Silksong comes out.
If you do everything it should take more than 110 hours
for the first ending it took me around 30 hours but to get 112% it took me around 100
100hrs? Holy Mantis Lords! That’s bugging insane. Good on you man.
No swearing
Watch your profanity young man!
mine was 47 hours i wasted a little time but not a lot
I’m at 68 hours and still Havent 112% the game 😭
I’m at 108%
Took me bout 65-ish then to do P5 it took another 15 hours lmao
Seems like I got a long road ahead of me…
Well if you play consistently it shouldn’t take that long, I left the game after doing P3 for bout 2 years then picked it up again, I wasn’t in my prime
About 20 hours total, not too bad
58
77 hours. NKG and pantheons 3 and 4 were serious time sinks :/
Im through the soul sanctum in city of tears and feel like ive come a long way from the start but from the way people talk about this game it seems pretty long so im just asking with anybody spoiling me, how much more game do i have?? Is my fun going to be cut short soon?
PS im playing the voidheart edition from the xbox gamepass i dunno if that adds a significant amount to the game or not...
60-80 hours first playthrough probably, up to 120 if you're slow.
Oh damn, ive been loving this game so far and find the challenging gameplay fun im a extremely seasoned souls player and am finding this game a breath of fresh air
Yeah plus an area in the endgame that can suck up a lot of time.
That’s probably a bit of an overestimation, but definitely 40-60.
Depending on the route you took to get there, I'd say you are between 30-40% of the way, and that's not counting all the challenge stuff at the end of the game.
The main game is about 40-60 hours, to get 112% can take 100-120 hours.
Jirard khalil needed 150 hours for 112%, and that dude completes similar games for a living
Yeah but he did the additional challenges such as the bindings
oh you got a long way to go lol
I’m twenty hours in and wish to know exactly how long i should play, so i don’t miss out on SilkSong, and get to binge Mossbag videos. I ask for the base game but if you can outline a rough idea of the free DLC playtime, that would help a ton! (and no spoilers, of course~) Thank you.
How long it took for me Main story: ~35h 100%: ~35h 112%: ~50h All steam achievements: ~70h
Everything: 190h
I got 100% on the base game in 50-55 hours. The Grimm dlc was another few hours and the last dlc doesn't really seem like it adds much to the lore, so far, but I could be wrong by the end
It took me 160h to get all of the achievements if that helps
Well the base game should take anywhere between 30 and 60 hours. And the longest dlc should be only like 5 hours. Less probably.
"And the longest dlc should be only like 5 hours" The godseeker would like to know your location
I didn’t know about the godseeker until this morning. I retract that statement. Lol
It took me 130 hours to do absolutely everything in the game.
I'm about 16 hours in on my first playthrough, and so far I have Greenpath, Fungal Wastes, City of Tears, Crystal Peak, Resting Grounds, and Howling Cliffs unlocked. I keep getting lost and trying to unlock every shortcut and item that I can find, so I'm sure that I'm moving slower than average. Plus I suck.
Just curious to see where everyone else ended up!
I think around 30-40 hours for me. I just tried to get to every new location. With Cornifer and my running around, the map got really filled, and I could see any areas that I hadn't gone to yet. That's how I felt my way through the game first time :P
40 for first ending, 85 for godmaster endings.
Over a hundred, but I took it slow
30+
Around 50 for me because I didn’t go for just hollow knight, because I knew what the radiance was and just went until I stopped
