TL;DR
Patience and Learning Patterns
Cuphead is renowned for its challenging gameplay, requiring players to learn from repeated failures. It's crucial to remain calm and patient as you familiarize yourself with each boss's attack patterns [1:1]
[2:2]. Each defeat provides valuable insights into boss movements and your own setup flaws, helping you improve over time
[5:1].
Dash and Parry Techniques
Mastering dash and parry techniques can significantly enhance your gameplay. The Smoke Bomb charm grants invincibility frames during dashes, making it a highly recommended purchase [1:4]
[1:8]
[5:3]. Additionally, learning to parry pink objects by jumping on them mid-air adds cards to your super meter, which is essential for maximizing your offensive capabilities
[4:3].
Weapon Choices
Choosing the right weapon can make a big difference in battles. The Roundabout shot is praised for its utility across various stages due to its boomerang-like effect, allowing you to focus on dodging while still hitting enemies [2:5]
[5:3]. Experiment with different weapons and supers to find combinations that suit your playstyle and specific boss fights
[2:1].
Control Setup
Adjusting your control setup can streamline your actions. Many players recommend switching the shoot button to a bumper for easier access, allowing simultaneous movement, dodging, and shooting without finger fatigue [4:4]
[4:8]. Using a controller instead of a keyboard can also provide more intuitive control
[5:3].
General Strategy
Focus on surviving rather than achieving high ranks initially. Gather coins in run 'n' gun levels to purchase useful items and upgrades [2:1]. Always be shooting, even when moving or dodging, to maximize damage output
[4:2]. Finally, remember that dying is part of the learning process, so don't get discouraged by frequent defeats
[5:2].
Watched people play, my first time playing.
Going home for leave and gonna make my older brother play it with me (he’s never played).
Him being the older brother, I’d like to “outshine him” for once lol
The first advice I give to new players is to get used to jumping and shooting at the same time by rolling your thumb instead of picking it up from shoot button, moving to jump button, then back to shoot if that makes sense. Its natural for some people and for others it's a weird thing to get the hang of
Also also, I feel like my biggest problem is I’m not utilizing dash enough… any advice on that?
I played on Xbox and honestly you'll start dashing more naturally out of necessity. Just learn the attack patterns and try to learn from your mistakes. You're meant to fail a lot but it helps you learn
Maybe try out the Smoke Bomb item? It gives your dash I frames and is generally just awesome.
So I have it on switch. Playing atm, so they seem to roll together relatively easily. What do you play it on? Also, thank you for the response 👍
Find some coins and buy the i-frame dash ability.
Heres the first tip just relax and remain calm because this game is a rager lol.
From the game itself to the dlc its fantastic but challenging in its on right. There's really no tricks that come to mind just be patient, calm, and strike whenever possible. If a boss feels too hard dont be afraid to watch the walk through of it. I had to for a few of em.
Most of the bosses arent overly extreme outside of mad scientist, or Mr king dice
I started playing this week and the game kicked my ass, how are people getting S ranks on every boss and P ranks on every run and gun when I got the stage 3 with sweating my ass this much, any tips to “get good” please?
Try not to get too frustrated when you die, easier said than done I know, but it will happen a lot. The key is just getting used to each boss's movement/attack patterns. Just keep at it and you'll soon notice yourself getting better and further.
I was where you were once, I think it's safe bet to say that most everyone here was. But, like all of us, through time and perseverance you'll get there.
If you ever need help beating any specific boss there's plenty of tips on here already. If you can't find what you need then just ask. Though try to be specific in regards to what you're struggling with, such as which part of the R&G or phase of the boss fight you're dropping health on.
I don't actually have the game, but I do have some tips from watching other people play!
Hopefully that helps!
Use Roundabout. That should get you through 99% of the game.
I use roundabout but am currently stuck at the run n gun with woodpeckers. I can get to the boss with 3-4HP but die Every time with only a few more hits to go. The frustration and rage quits are real...
Unless you’ve beaten every boss and seen the credits roll, don’t worry too much about rank.
You can’t actually get an S rank until you have unlocked Expert Mode though finishing the game. But even getting A rank doesn’t give you anything extra to help out.
Just focus on getting through all the fights alive, getting your coins on run ‘n’ gun levels and talk to everyone on the map for extra stuff.
Don’t forget to equip stuff you buy and try out new weapons and supers.
Even if they seem ineffective, make sure you understand how they work, because I guarantee you’ll find yourself in situations where switching weapons will help a ton.
Once you’ve cleared every fight, if you want more, you can go back and try to A Rank them, or clear them in Expert Mode, or S Rank them in Expert Mode.
Whatever challenge you want to set yourself next :).
Have fun!
As most of you probably know by now, the Cuphead DLC is coming out at the end of the month. So to celebrate, I decided I’m going to be posting tips for each boss in the main game.
These tips will be based on my experiences on achieving the S rank for all bosses, including advice on what weapon setup to take and how to evade all the different attacks. I will be posting tips for one boss a day, every day, until the release of the DLC.
I’ll be listing the bosses in order, starting with The Root Pack. I’ll be posting every day, so stay tuned if there’s a boss you’re still working on and you need tips!
Can I have some Expert Mode Tips
All of my tips will be based on Expert mode and my personal strategies for achieving every S rank. I’ll be posting each boss in order, so keep an eye out for whichever bosses you need help with!
Well I gonna try S Rank but I lose my sanity
Always be shooting, most basic tip but also the most useful learn how to move, dodge, dash and parry all while holding down the x button, it’ll save a lot of time and you’ll beat the bosses way faster
How do you parry???
Press jump on a pink thing (usually projectile) while in air
Dashing and parrying are the two skills you need to learn the most. If you ever get stuck, it's likely that one of those can save you. Finally, always consider what guns and charm to use in each level
How do you parry???
By pressing jump in midair you'll do a "parry" move that let's you absorb pink attacks when you collide with them and add a card to your super meter. It's a timing thing to learn, but well worth getting good at
Roundabout and lobber are the best along side with the invisible dash. Your first super is the only good one you get honestly. But that’s my opinion. Also just switch the controls for shoot to right bumper. Original controls make the game 10x more anal
Me who got all the achievements with default controls: 👁️ 👄👁️
I use left bumper for shoot and right bumper for dash
But some people like it in the ass, soo there is no problem with original controls.
Remember, your monitor loves you for who you are. It is not laughing at you for failing a boss fight. Do not punch a hole through it.
Console fs. PC controls are solid imo. But I play groove coaster on pc so I don’t think any game can annoy me when it comes to fast clicks on a keyboard lol
I absolutely adore Cuphead's visual style, music, characters, as well as the cartoons it references and bought it for these. But I haven't played a videogame in 25+ years, and never one on PC. I can't get past the first level. Any tips for general gameplay that will allow me to master the game's mechanics?
Some things I am already trying/will try:
I haven’t finished the game yet and I’m on world 3, but if you don’t already you should always be shooting, try to use certain weapons for certain bosses (when you get enough coins), try staying calm, and for the first level, don’t freak out too much.It takes patience, and learning the patterns, so once you get the hang of the bosses and what they will do, it’ll be much easier
I would highly recommend getting some sort of controller to plug into your PC. The best charm to get in the beginning is the smoke bomb. Whenever you dash you will be invisible for a moment so you can't get hit. Another tip is to get the round a bout shot. If you aim away from the boss it will act like a boomerang and hit the boss so you can focus on dodging attacks. Another bonus is that the attack is useful in basically every stage you play. You will die a lot so don't worry about it when you do. The only other thing I can say is good luck, the game is hard.
Something that I’ve learned is that Cuphead requires patience. You’re probably not going to beat most levels after your first, fifth, or even tenth try. But that’s okay. Because you can learn about boss patterns or flaws in your setup from each defeat. Also I suggest getting the Smoke Bomb or another weapon first since having two weapons as early as possible is nice.
I haven't seen anyone play the game but I know the basic premise and that it's hard as hell so I'm scared. Any tips are appreciated.
This game is probably gonna kick your ass with difficulty but it’s fair and not bs like dark souls don’t give up you can do it
If anything cuphead is more bs in the sense that they just like to spam projectiles and enemies as if you are playing some mario maker level made by a young child
Smoke dash and spread shot. Don’t give up, perseverance is key.
Any pink things you can jump on and hit the jump button and it will do something
Get smoke first then either charge or spread those two are easily the best in the game and also on the root pack try not attacking the onion.
Just be patient. You're going to die a lot, so just keep trying, don't be afraid to mix up your equipment and experiment. Get good at parrying, it will pay off. And anything that's pink, parry it, even if it doesn't look like you can.
Yes, as we know, Cuphead is not an easy game. Mainly because of the boss fights. You gotta have skill for sure. This game really puts you to the test. I’ve been playing this since 2020 and maaan.. it feels damn good to get an S rank, especially one handed. Cuphead and Sekiro are the two games that really tests my skill. Are you a fan?
Maybe I should go into Super mario community and ask "who's a fan of Mario?"
Jokes aside, glad you enjoy the game and congratulations on S rank with 1 hand
lol I know that was dumb of me 😅 but yes, playing one handed isn’t too bad, but having to do two commands with one hand takes a lot of practice and focus. I appreciate it 💯
One handed?! On the flower boss?! /j
Yup! Hated flower the most in isle one lol 😂
I love the game so much I got a 300% save file and all 42 achievements
I think we all are a fan bud
It’s such a damn good, but challenging game for sure!
Yup, it's flipping amazing
Did you just go to the cuphead subreddit and ask who’s a fan of cuphead?
Yes I did. You never know. 😅
I literally can't even beat the first level, the forest area. I'm not sure what exactly I'm doing wrong, it seems a bit excessive for a beginner level with the sheer amount they throw at you, I always die either at or just after that kettle miniboss. I've beaten Dark Souls, Sekiro and A ranked dmc on dmd, so I'm not terrible by any means, I'm just really struggling as this is my first game of this style. When I heard run and gun I assumed it would be like Doom in 2D.
Any tips for a noob to this genre. I especially struggle when there's multiple enemies to deal with, the sunflowers constantly coming in, the blue resurrecting motherfuckers, bomb throwing flowers and all that coming at me at the same time.
Just keep trying, in the Run and Gun levels try to do it patience, they’re all optional and you only need them for the coins.
Buy the Roundabout shot ASAP with those coins and jump to the bosses.
Just for being good in DS and Sekiro doesn’t mean you’re already good here. I played Cuphead first and then took 1 hour to beat Gundyr in DS.
What! run and gun is optional? I thought that was the meat of the game. So it's a boss rush?
Run in gun is only for coins, the majority of the coins are there, only some are hidden and in NPC small quests, this game is indeed a boss rush game.
if you don't want to do the run and guns then get past the tutorial and get the coin then talk to apple that will get you four coins and you can use it to buy something personally buy roundabout first
You think you throw the remote at the TV
So I did all bosses on simple but need to do regular to fight King Dice and Devil. Any tips?
#1If you’re trying to roll a certain number on the die, crouch under it, and time it right; when the number comes up on the dice double press the jump button asap. #2 If you are good at parrying, when the cards start walking across the screen at the end of the fight, parry each card twice. Go forwards, and back. This lets you get some momentum for when the next card comes. #3 If you aren’t good at parrying, then try your best on the first card part where they walk across the board, and take note of where King Dice’s hand is. If it is on the left side of the board, when the hand comes down to walk the cards, go to the opposite side of the screen. If the first time the cards start walking and his hand is to the right, when they start going again, go to the very edge of the left side of the screen, and then the right next time, and so on. #4 Smoke Bomb is a must. Hope this helps, and good luck!!!
The Cuphead wiki has tips for bosses on their respective pages. Otherwise, just practice. It's a hard game and you need to try over and over to get that muscle memory and get into the zone.
Something that helped me was turning the sound off on certain levels. Removing an entire layer of stimulus helped me focus better.
I'm just now getting my chance to do a playthrough of cuphead because I hadn't had access to any of the systems that it was on when it came out. I was dreading it because I don't like really hard games, but this is hard in a good way. this is fun hard. this isn't punishing hard like meat boy. this is I want to do better next time and I can't wait to go back in there and try again hard. it balances difficulty and fun perfectly. I'm surprised cuz I was expecting to put it on for a few minutes and drool over the graphics and then turn it off m because I was expecting a very punishing game but this is fun and challenging not rip your hair out, punch holes in the walls and get yourself evicted for screaming at the top of your lungs hard. though that may happen too because I've seen videos of people on YouTube doing that. but it's fun.
Well deserved of the popularity it achieved when it first came out.
yeah i was basically in the same situation as you (though i started being able to play cuphead for some years now, but at that time i never thought of it since it was too late, like years after it released) i was also always a fan of plataformers and remember watching all sort of content about the game when it came out in 2017. I started playing like 3 weeks ago, i think i just remembered it one day or something, ive been playin hell of a lot games recently so of course i had to try it after so much time of never playing it, i literally beat saltbaker yesterday and i finally leveled up the cursed relic to divine, now the only thing left for me is to defeat every boss in expert mode and get that 300%, i knew it was a great game, and after playing it i was exactly right.
I definitely think it's a fun great game I just don't know how much longer I'm going to last cuz I think it's more of a game than I can handle cuz I'm not a great gamer I just enjoy the hobby. I love Platformers there's some of my favorite genre video games. But I'll probably never stop playing it completely because it's just fun even if it's every once in awhile I go in there and mess around and then it's fun. Despite the fact that it's one of the hardest games I've ever played it is absolutely fun. Just to have a little more fun in the game I decided to look up and download a save file that was already 300% complete so I could kind of just go through and see what the rest of the game had to offer before I could get there myself
Welcome to your new obsession.

Use the Parry Mechanic: Parrying pink objects not only helps you avoid damage but also builds your super meter. Practice this to maximize your damage output.
Choose Your Weapons Wisely: Experiment with different weapons and charms. The Spread shot is great for close-range, while the Chaser is useful for tracking enemies. Find a combination that suits your playstyle.
Upgrade Your Charms: The Smoke Bomb charm allows you to dash through attacks, while the Heart charm gives you an extra hit point. Choose charms that complement your strategy.

Co-op Play: If possible, play with a friend. Co-op mode allows for more strategic options and can make some bosses easier to tackle.
Stay Calm and Patient: The game is designed to be challenging. Keeping a cool head will help you make better decisions during intense moments.
Recommendation: Focus on mastering the parry mechanic early on, as it significantly boosts your survivability and damage potential. Additionally, don’t hesitate to switch up your weapons and charms based on the boss you’re facing; adaptability is key in Cuphead!
