What Redditors are Saying

How Long Does It Take to Beat Cuphead?

TL;DR The time it takes to beat Cuphead varies widely depending on skill level and experience, ranging from a few hours to several months. For most players, completing the game can take anywhere from 20 to 40 hours.

Average Completion Time

Cuphead is known for its challenging gameplay, and completion times vary significantly among players. Many users report finishing the game in about 20 to 35 hours [5:1], with some taking up to four months due to the difficulty of certain boss battles [1:2][3:1]. On average, first-time playthroughs tend to take longer, while subsequent runs are quicker as players become familiar with the bosses and mechanics [2:2].

Skill Level Impact

Individual skill levels greatly impact completion time. Players who are experienced with platformers or similar games may complete Cuphead faster than those new to the genre. Some users have reported finishing the game in under 10 hours after getting accustomed to its mechanics [5:3], while others took several weeks or months [3:4][3:7]. Speedrunners can finish the game in under an hour [4:4].

Difficulty Perception

Despite its reputation for difficulty, many players find Cuphead to be a manageable challenge once they get used to its mechanics [5:6]. The game requires persistence and practice, but it's not considered impossible by most players [5:5][5:12]. The downloadable content (DLC) is perceived as slightly harder than the base game, offering additional challenges for those seeking more [5:9].

Completion Strategies

To reduce frustration and improve completion time, players often recommend focusing on learning each boss's patterns and practicing consistently. Some players suggest playing offline to avoid distractions [3:6], while others emphasize the importance of patience and perseverance [5:11]. Engaging with the community for tips and strategies can also be beneficial for overcoming particularly difficult sections of the game.

I was in the 25 hour range with 2 player, 10 or so with 1 player (I did the 2 player first). It's definitely a game that takes a while the first time, but the second time goes much quicker since you know the bosses already and what to expect.

I have all the achievements, and Steam shows me having 17 hours of gameplay. Real time it probably took me 2-3 weeks, give or take.

I was not playing offline- I was online the whole time. I also love this kind of platformer (I Wanna Be The Guy is one of my all-time favorite games), so may have finished it faster than some.

A few months. I was moving at the time, so I didn't have much time to play it to begin with, but some boss battles took me entire days to finish. Jeep in mind that I have never played a game like this before, I'm more into Pokemon and other Nintendo franchises. Never anything this difficult. (Actually, the first run and gun took me a few days to finish. It took a while for me to get used to the game.)

Hours it takes to beat the game?

I recently beat cuphead, and got every coin as well as got an a-rank on the devil and king dice in 12 hours. Is this fast? It feels fast. I know getting every other achievement is going to take a while.

I have never played cuphead before.

I don't remember the exact hours it took, but beating the full thing took me about a month, and I didn't 100% the game until a few years later. Granted, I kinda dropped it at that point. Nowadays, I can 100% the full thing in about 4 full hours.

Totally agree. I think it was the prefect level of difficulty for me.

I expected it to be way harder based on the stories i heard about it on release. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't some rage inducing impossible game either. Just a pleasant challenge

How many hours did Cuphead give you?

I'm about buying it, but I'm not sure.

I have only 30$ to spend in games, and because of the quarantine, I'm bored, so I want to buy one game. Cuphead looks amazing, and I now it's a really good game, but whether I buy it or not will depend of how many hours will give me.

i did a full playthrough for like 25 hours, that unlocks expert mode to replay it with harder remixes. It depends on how good you are though. The bosses only take a few minutes each to complete successfully and theres maybe 30 or so of them. A lot of the playtime is spent dying, learning boss patterns, and practicing.

The first thing I did when I got through to the second island was check the pond. It told me I had perished or died 496 times. I recon I spent 12-15 hours on the first island alone!

I think that's a bit of a rarity without trying to go for perfection. I got to the second island in about 1 hour and 30 minutes with 56 deaths, and thats after perfecting the first boss.

Yes, yes, yes.

I beat the game, thought it was over. Loved it so much I said, “What the hell?”. I decided to try to beat it on expert, I pulled it off. Still I found myself craving more of the game. So I, for the first time in my whole life as serious gamer and collector, decided to go for all achievements. I pulled that off. God knows how much time I spent doing it, but I know I have failed and perished 1,309 times according to the game. I’m going to get my switch and see how many hours I spent playing it and I’ll put it in an edit.

Edit: According to my switch I played for “170 hours or more”. I have NEVER spent that much time playing a single player shooter. Holy shit. Only thing that could come close is Hellfire on the genesis, and for almost the same reason. It’s insanely difficult, but the gameplay is too good to put it down. I never beat Hellfire though...yet.

This game is easily worth your time and money not only is it totally gorgeous, but it test your capabilities in a fair and fun way. I haven’t sunk so many hours in a single player game in a while. Also this game rewards different play styles so even when you do beat it theres still much to experimentation to explore. Also try Expert mode. Its like having double the game imo

4 upvotes on reddit
FacewreckGG · 5 years ago

if you enjoy it there's a ton of replay-ability, im up to like 70 hours and have cleared all achievements.

With steam you can always refund a game you have owned for less than 2 weeks and played less than 2 hours for any reason. So buy it and try it for an hour, if you like it then keep it.

Finally beat the game on regular!

Posted by mrbushidoo · in r/Cuphead · 7 years ago

Steam says that I have spent 33 hours on the game. When I look up the beat time on howlongtobeat etc it shows 9 hours on average. WTF!? I hope it is not true :D. It is pretty frustrating after all the tryhard to find out average is almost 3 times faster. Also I use keyboard 99% time on games but borrowed a XBOX 360 from a friend and tried playing Cuphead with that. I have not used gamepad much before. There was also the stage of getting used to the it but GG. Cata Maria(she is cute though XD) and King Dice was real cancer bosses.

EDIT: I uploaded the image with 1012 fails on the well but I guess I'm not allowed to post images?

That 9 hours statistic sounds suspicious to me too...considering how on Steam only 13% of the game owners have finished the game at all! Maybe we need some stats on the skill level of the average Cuphead-beater.

How long does it take to beat cuphead

Key Considerations:

  1. Gameplay Duration: On average, it takes about 10 to 15 hours to complete Cuphead, depending on your skill level and familiarity with platformers.

  2. Difficulty Level: Cuphead is known for its challenging gameplay. Players who are less experienced may take longer to beat the game, while seasoned gamers might finish it more quickly.

  3. Completionist Approach: If you aim to collect all achievements, defeat all bosses, and complete all levels, it could take 20 to 30 hours or more.
