TL;DR The time it takes to beat Cuphead varies widely depending on skill level and experience, ranging from a few hours to several months. For most players, completing the game can take anywhere from 20 to 40 hours.
Average Completion Time
Cuphead is known for its challenging gameplay, and completion times vary significantly among players. Many users report finishing the game in about 20 to 35 hours [5:1], with some taking up to four months due to the difficulty of certain boss battles
[1:2]
[3:1]. On average, first-time playthroughs tend to take longer, while subsequent runs are quicker as players become familiar with the bosses and mechanics
[2:2].
Skill Level Impact
Individual skill levels greatly impact completion time. Players who are experienced with platformers or similar games may complete Cuphead faster than those new to the genre. Some users have reported finishing the game in under 10 hours after getting accustomed to its mechanics [5:3], while others took several weeks or months
[3:4]
[3:7]. Speedrunners can finish the game in under an hour
[4:4].
Difficulty Perception
Despite its reputation for difficulty, many players find Cuphead to be a manageable challenge once they get used to its mechanics [5:6]. The game requires persistence and practice, but it's not considered impossible by most players
[5:5]
[5:12]. The downloadable content (DLC) is perceived as slightly harder than the base game, offering additional challenges for those seeking more
[5:9].
Completion Strategies
To reduce frustration and improve completion time, players often recommend focusing on learning each boss's patterns and practicing consistently. Some players suggest playing offline to avoid distractions [3:6], while others emphasize the importance of patience and perseverance
[5:11]. Engaging with the community for tips and strategies can also be beneficial for overcoming particularly difficult sections of the game.
took me a solid 2 months, about 40 hours, 1000 deaths or so. dunno if i have the patience to do expert.
Took me 2 weeks of playing!
Less than a month
Haven’t finished yet
Haven’t beat it yet. So far, just beat King Dice on regular and I’ve got 45 hrs.
Mine was 28 hours
I was in the 25 hour range with 2 player, 10 or so with 1 player (I did the 2 player first). It's definitely a game that takes a while the first time, but the second time goes much quicker since you know the bosses already and what to expect.
1st playthrough - 23 hours 2nd playthrough - 5 hours
9 hours on my first run. Running it now I can do it in an hour and 15 minutes
That shit took me 4 months
Once I S ranked the devil my total play time was 2 days, 3 hours and 39 minutes.
I have all the achievements, and Steam shows me having 17 hours of gameplay. Real time it probably took me 2-3 weeks, give or take.
Were you playing offline..cuz then steam doesn't record that time spent playing..that might be y it shows 17..or maybe u just pro
I was not playing offline- I was online the whole time. I also love this kind of platformer (I Wanna Be The Guy is one of my all-time favorite games), so may have finished it faster than some.
I did it while I was on vacation in Greece for a week. I reckon it took me maybe 17-20 hours of playtime.
Full S and P ranked game took me 69hrs.
Two weeks
A few months. I was moving at the time, so I didn't have much time to play it to begin with, but some boss battles took me entire days to finish. Jeep in mind that I have never played a game like this before, I'm more into Pokemon and other Nintendo franchises. Never anything this difficult. (Actually, the first run and gun took me a few days to finish. It took a while for me to get used to the game.)
I don't remember the exact hours it took, but beating the full thing took me about a month, and I didn't 100% the game until a few years later. Granted, I kinda dropped it at that point. Nowadays, I can 100% the full thing in about 4 full hours.
I don’t recall my exact time to just beating. But here is my time till 100% completion and all s ranks
I’ve beaten the whole game (100%) in under an hour. Never done all achievements but I’d think it takes maybe 2-10 hours to get them all
Is that your first playthrough or a speedrun?
That was my best speedrun time
About 5 my first play through
Everyone is at a different skill level, with a game like Cuphead it can take some people 5 hours and some 40. It depends
Definitely the kind of game you enjoy so much that you want to reward it by buying the DLC.
I love watching my plat vid for this. I was so locked in at the end I was just jumping around the falling chip perfectly and I love reliving that moment. I have no idea how many hours it took to finally beat him but it was a lot. Congrats 🎉
The fun thing is that I did that parry on the video by accident and so glad I did because it would have taken me out. I was so locked in that I didn't even noticed the super was charged
I’ve always wanted to go for it but always found it intimidating. How long did it take you?
Not OP but took me approx 20 hrs including dlc. If I were to redo this I think I could do it under 10 hrs as there is def some stuff to get used to at first but once you get a hang of the concept it's not too bad.
If you love a challenge go for it. It's not easy at all but once you get use to it, you'll get better amd better.
Don’t say that, it is that hard, u are very good playing and that’s it, I also got it 2 years ago, my 2nd favorite after Dark Souls 1
I just thought it would be harder because of all the boogeyman stories around it. But by no means it's a walk in the park
It’s mostly kids especially with how cuphead looks.
>Not as hard as the reputation it has.
Totally agree. I think it was the prefect level of difficulty for me.
I expected it to be way harder based on the stories i heard about it on release. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't some rage inducing impossible game either. Just a pleasant challenge
Exactly how I felt. Liked it so much that should be playing the DLC soon.
I think the dlc is a bit harder than base game, but nothing crazy. It was great

I'm about buying it, but I'm not sure.
I have only 30$ to spend in games, and because of the quarantine, I'm bored, so I want to buy one game. Cuphead looks amazing, and I now it's a really good game, but whether I buy it or not will depend of how many hours will give me.
i did a full playthrough for like 25 hours, that unlocks expert mode to replay it with harder remixes. It depends on how good you are though. The bosses only take a few minutes each to complete successfully and theres maybe 30 or so of them. A lot of the playtime is spent dying, learning boss patterns, and practicing.
Yes, and the replayablility.
Thanks, I think I'm going to buy it.
I have spent over 100 hours, because of the game's replayability.
The first thing I did when I got through to the second island was check the pond. It told me I had perished or died 496 times. I recon I spent 12-15 hours on the first island alone!
I think that's a bit of a rarity without trying to go for perfection. I got to the second island in about 1 hour and 30 minutes with 56 deaths, and thats after perfecting the first boss.
Yes, yes, yes.
I beat the game, thought it was over. Loved it so much I said, “What the hell?”. I decided to try to beat it on expert, I pulled it off. Still I found myself craving more of the game. So I, for the first time in my whole life as serious gamer and collector, decided to go for all achievements. I pulled that off. God knows how much time I spent doing it, but I know I have failed and perished 1,309 times according to the game. I’m going to get my switch and see how many hours I spent playing it and I’ll put it in an edit.
Edit: According to my switch I played for “170 hours or more”. I have NEVER spent that much time playing a single player shooter. Holy shit. Only thing that could come close is Hellfire on the genesis, and for almost the same reason. It’s insanely difficult, but the gameplay is too good to put it down. I never beat Hellfire though...yet.
And don’t forget, the DLC is coming and will bring SO much more to the table. It’s already great replayability is gonna shoot through the roof.
my friend who has 500 hrs on animal crossing already: "those are rookie numbers!"
This game is easily worth your time and money not only is it totally gorgeous, but it test your capabilities in a fair and fun way. I haven’t sunk so many hours in a single player game in a while. Also this game rewards different play styles so even when you do beat it theres still much to experimentation to explore. Also try Expert mode. Its like having double the game imo
if you enjoy it there's a ton of replay-ability, im up to like 70 hours and have cleared all achievements.
With steam you can always refund a game you have owned for less than 2 weeks and played less than 2 hours for any reason. So buy it and try it for an hour, if you like it then keep it.
Howlongtobeat.com is a good website to get those type of informations. I finished cuphead years ago and still thinking about it.
Thanks for the website, very useful.
so what’s the consensus? is 20 hours good for never playing this game before? it felt good considering the difficulty, but god this game was rough. longest 20 hours of my life.
Congrats! Nice one for sure.
Very impressive

I dreamed about posting that for years! Since I didn’t play a similar game before I needed over 115 hours playtime for it. How many hours did u guys need to completely beat the game?
I needed 70 hours but I don’t have all the S ranks
Just picked up the game yesterday, at this rate probably won’t even get 300% within the current year
100h for all s ranks
how do you see that achievements screen?
It took me 17 hours for playstation but that's because I had previous experience on nintendo. On nintendo I think it took me about 30-40 hours
So glad I’m done this game. I was absolutely horrible at this and even with the pay to win dlc it still took me 47 hours to platinum. . Great game just glad to be done with being stuck for 2 hours on a boss
Awesome, and congratulations on the plat! 😁
Thanks man
You’re welcome! ☺️

Steam says that I have spent 33 hours on the game. When I look up the beat time on howlongtobeat etc it shows 9 hours on average. WTF!? I hope it is not true :D. It is pretty frustrating after all the tryhard to find out average is almost 3 times faster. Also I use keyboard 99% time on games but borrowed a XBOX 360 from a friend and tried playing Cuphead with that. I have not used gamepad much before. There was also the stage of getting used to the it but GG. Cata Maria(she is cute though XD) and King Dice was real cancer bosses.
EDIT: I uploaded the image with 1012 fails on the well but I guess I'm not allowed to post images?
Same, it took me 24 hours, although I'm much worse at the game than anyone I've watched play
Streamers and youtubers are generally being watched because they are good( or boob XD). So it is pretty normal. Also they are probably not playing the game for the first time.
I just beat the game on regular as well! I don't mean to brag but it only took me 11 hours.
Congratulations then!
That 9 hours statistic sounds suspicious to me too...considering how on Steam only 13% of the game owners have finished the game at all! Maybe we need some stats on the skill level of the average Cuphead-beater.
I just tried the website. There is no verification for submissions. That tells about short run times :)
How long does it take to beat cuphead
Key Considerations:
Gameplay Duration: On average, it takes about 10 to 15 hours to complete Cuphead, depending on your skill level and familiarity with platformers.
Difficulty Level: Cuphead is known for its challenging gameplay. Players who are less experienced may take longer to beat the game, while seasoned gamers might finish it more quickly.
Completionist Approach: If you aim to collect all achievements, defeat all bosses, and complete all levels, it could take 20 to 30 hours or more.
Co-op Play: Playing with a friend can change the dynamics and may either speed up or slow down your progress, depending on teamwork and coordination.
Recommendation: If you’re new to the game, be prepared for a steep learning curve. Take your time to practice and enjoy the unique art style and music. Consider playing in co-op mode for a more enjoyable experience!
