TL;DR
Understanding Boss Patterns
A key strategy in Cuphead is learning the attack patterns of each boss. This involves repeated attempts to familiarize yourself with their moves and timing [1:1],
[3:2]. As you play, focus on surviving longer each time, rather than immediately trying to defeat the boss. This approach helps build muscle memory and improves reaction times
[5:4].
Effective Control Setup
Adjusting your controls can significantly improve your gameplay. Many players recommend changing the default controls for more efficient movement and shooting. For example, using ZR to shoot and ZL to lock can make it easier to manage actions simultaneously [2:1]. Additionally, practice rolling your thumb between buttons to jump and shoot without lifting your finger
[4:2].
Choosing the Right Equipment
Selecting the right weapons and charms can make a big difference. The Smoke Bomb charm, which grants invincibility frames during dashes, is highly recommended for dodging attacks [3:6],
[4:8]. The Roundabout weapon is also favored by many players for its versatility and effectiveness against most bosses
[3:5].
Patience and Persistence
Cuphead is known for its difficulty, so maintaining patience and persistence is crucial. Don't get discouraged by frequent deaths; instead, view them as learning opportunities [1:1],
[5:2]. Take breaks if needed to avoid frustration, and remember that improvement comes with time and practice
[2:2],
[5:5].
Utilize Resources and Community Advice
If you're stuck on a particular boss or level, consider watching walkthroughs or seeking community advice. Many players share strategies and tips online, which can provide new insights or techniques you haven't considered [1:1],
[4:1]. Engaging with the community can also offer encouragement and motivation as you progress through the game.
I’m no stranger to difficult games: have pretty much all the Souls games, Hades, and Returnal under my belt as well as playing some other games on their extra hard modes.
Cuphead is beautiful and I gave it a shot a couple years back, but found the repetition needed to succeed off putting and more time intensive than other difficult undertakings.
But I’m willing to overcome those impressions and throw myself into this game again so…any advice for a noob? A noob who knows the basics of the game and knows how to play games generally, but doesn’t wanna go into this half-assed.
These are some tips I wish I had been given when I started.
Not all shots will hurt your enemy. Some bosses have a specific spot you need to hit in order for damage to actually count. You’ll know if a hit registers as a damaging shot if the boss flickers white. When in doubt, aim for the face. I have spent hours aiming for body shots that never registered as actual damage to the boss. Some bosses may be invulnerable until you trigger a vulnerable area that you can shoot.
Also, you only have three health points. It’s not always a good idea to risk dealing a little extra damage in exchange for taking a hit yourself. You can always deal more damage in just a second- you can’t get more health points back.
I finished it on extreme yesterday. My biggest advice is to never overreact to a death. If you get really close to beating a boss, you’ll be right back to that point in no time. Every loss builds your boss knowledge and routine to where you’ll improve and beat them. It definitely takes a lot of time but if you beat those other games it shouldn’t be too tough. Some bosses I beat on the first try, some took a few hours for me to figure out and beat. If you’re struggling with a certain boss, you can always look it up on YouTube for helpful strats. Take your time, don’t stress, and you got it!
Hey! Fellow switch player here! Here are some tips I used to help beat the main game!
Hope these help! Cuphead is an awesome game and you'll have a blast!!
Do all the bosses in regular mode if you want to finish the game, but simple mode is good for training.
Also complete run n gun levels in order to get coins. Chaser, Spreadshot, Heart and Parry Sugar are recommended imo.
You have do regular mode to finish? Simple mode is kicking my behind! 😂
Thanks for the tips!
Master parrying.
Nuke quadratus (or however tf you spell his name)
Heya fellow Switch player! Here are my tips:
First Change Your Controls: Jump B Shoot ZR Ex Shoot A Switch Weapon X Lock ZL Dash Y
Practice Make Perfect Cuphead bosses on the one-side are each uniquely fun and adds news to the table but on the other hand goes from 0-10 as you progress.
I'd suggest practice parrying, it may seem simple but it's mandatory for the later(like King Dice.)
Weapons and Supers
Weapons are the items you buy from Porkrind.
During Inkwell Isle 1-2, Charge/Spread/Roundabout and even Peashooter are your best friends.
If you want to buy Heart early, then go for it. For Inkwell-IV buy the other items.
Super 1:This is the MVP for %80 of the bosses. This guarantees you an easy 6/6 Parry score, as long as you use when the boss is vulnerable.
Super 2:2 is invincibility, so se it for the Run-And-Gun. During my first run I didn't think about this one but I regret. Post game, w/Chalice Super 2 helped me get P ranks.
You ever played Undertale where you could go the Pacifist route by making friends/not battling them? Well, that's what P-Ranks are. They are a pain the ass so worry about them once you've unlocked Chalice and heated the DLC.
Super 3:It's useful. The only downside is as it moves around you too as well, leaving you wide-open to attacks. Just use it wisely and you should be good.
Fun Fact:By the time you're finished with Cuphead you'll have all the Weapons, Charms and Supers.
Don't Worry About Ranks(Yet)
Listen, listen I know ranks in games are fun to test your skills but for Cuphead it's stressful enough beating bosses like Dr. Kahl's Robot and Wally Werbles.
Focus on beating the boss and the DLC, then go for the Expert Mode and Acheivements.
At the end of the day you choose :).
COLLECT DEM COINS
Oh boy. After I beated Cuphead I realized that I was missing 1 coin to buy the last item and had to replay a run-and-gun to get the coin.
During your run look out for coins and hints. And definitely collect the coins in run-and-guns
Hope my guy helps😁!
I started playing this week and the game kicked my ass, how are people getting S ranks on every boss and P ranks on every run and gun when I got the stage 3 with sweating my ass this much, any tips to “get good” please?
Try not to get too frustrated when you die, easier said than done I know, but it will happen a lot. The key is just getting used to each boss's movement/attack patterns. Just keep at it and you'll soon notice yourself getting better and further.
I was where you were once, I think it's safe bet to say that most everyone here was. But, like all of us, through time and perseverance you'll get there.
If you ever need help beating any specific boss there's plenty of tips on here already. If you can't find what you need then just ask. Though try to be specific in regards to what you're struggling with, such as which part of the R&G or phase of the boss fight you're dropping health on.
Use Roundabout. That should get you through 99% of the game.
I use roundabout but am currently stuck at the run n gun with woodpeckers. I can get to the boss with 3-4HP but die Every time with only a few more hits to go. The frustration and rage quits are real...
I don't actually have the game, but I do have some tips from watching other people play!
Hopefully that helps!
Unless you’ve beaten every boss and seen the credits roll, don’t worry too much about rank.
You can’t actually get an S rank until you have unlocked Expert Mode though finishing the game. But even getting A rank doesn’t give you anything extra to help out.
Just focus on getting through all the fights alive, getting your coins on run ‘n’ gun levels and talk to everyone on the map for extra stuff.
Don’t forget to equip stuff you buy and try out new weapons and supers.
Even if they seem ineffective, make sure you understand how they work, because I guarantee you’ll find yourself in situations where switching weapons will help a ton.
Once you’ve cleared every fight, if you want more, you can go back and try to A Rank them, or clear them in Expert Mode, or S Rank them in Expert Mode.
Whatever challenge you want to set yourself next :).
Have fun!
Watched people play, my first time playing.
Going home for leave and gonna make my older brother play it with me (he’s never played).
Him being the older brother, I’d like to “outshine him” for once lol
The first advice I give to new players is to get used to jumping and shooting at the same time by rolling your thumb instead of picking it up from shoot button, moving to jump button, then back to shoot if that makes sense. Its natural for some people and for others it's a weird thing to get the hang of
Also also, I feel like my biggest problem is I’m not utilizing dash enough… any advice on that?
I played on Xbox and honestly you'll start dashing more naturally out of necessity. Just learn the attack patterns and try to learn from your mistakes. You're meant to fail a lot but it helps you learn
Maybe try out the Smoke Bomb item? It gives your dash I frames and is generally just awesome.
So I have it on switch. Playing atm, so they seem to roll together relatively easily. What do you play it on? Also, thank you for the response 👍
Find some coins and buy the i-frame dash ability.
Heres the first tip just relax and remain calm because this game is a rager lol.
From the game itself to the dlc its fantastic but challenging in its on right. There's really no tricks that come to mind just be patient, calm, and strike whenever possible. If a boss feels too hard dont be afraid to watch the walk through of it. I had to for a few of em.
Most of the bosses arent overly extreme outside of mad scientist, or Mr king dice
My brother just got Cuphead yesterday in hopes of adding to our list of indie games we've played; little did the two of us know that this game was hard as balls. Bro, y'all make this look so fucking easy doing it without taking damage. HOW DOES ONE BEAT THIS DAMN GAME!!!
>HOW DOES ONE BEAT THIS DAMN GAME!!!
Infinite amounts of trial and error, building skills more and more across a period of multiple hours a day, trying new strategies, retrying old strategies,
and a WHOLE lot of dying.
imo the most satisfying part of the game is in your own skill progression. I’m stuck on the Devil in the base game, but I know I will beat him eventually - the fight is fair and it’s just a matter of fine-tuning my reflexes and responses, as it was for every other fight in the game.
I was looking at my boss fight scores and noticed that I got a B- for Goopy Le Grande and an A- for Dr. Kahl’s Robot, lol. The game truly does get easier with practice (and a lot of patience).
İn sekiro terms
Git gud
I think those are hollow knight terms...
Just git gud mate
Just kidding, the game is all about muscle memory, be cartain that these people that finish the game without taking damage, already died A LOT before being able to do this
I'll have to try several times before you remember "Now the boss will do this, now an enemy will appear here"
I'm currently s ranking the devil and king dice. P ranked and s ranked everyone else. I had a little under 500 deaths after a+ everything the first go round on normal (including the run n guns), and I did a ton of resetting. I'm sure I'm now over a thousand and I've still be resetting. It's also my first time playing lol
I won't even try to S rank everything, would like to, but my mental health is more important
So in other words…
Just git gud mate
It can be really hard lmao, I got it without knowing how hard it was and didn't play for months, honestly it's really hard to beat bosses the first time but you do get the hang of it, the people making it look easy have just been through the rounds
It is formally known as The Great Cuphead War in my house. 300 percent on all 3 saves. About 3 years ago. It is my greatest achievement to this day.
Why is it a war? Did it have any casualties? (smashed controllers do count)
At some point, you just become
Definitely the kind of game you enjoy so much that you want to reward it by buying the DLC.
I love watching my plat vid for this. I was so locked in at the end I was just jumping around the falling chip perfectly and I love reliving that moment. I have no idea how many hours it took to finally beat him but it was a lot. Congrats 🎉
The fun thing is that I did that parry on the video by accident and so glad I did because it would have taken me out. I was so locked in that I didn't even noticed the super was charged
Don’t say that, it is that hard, u are very good playing and that’s it, I also got it 2 years ago, my 2nd favorite after Dark Souls 1
I just thought it would be harder because of all the boogeyman stories around it. But by no means it's a walk in the park
It’s mostly kids especially with how cuphead looks.
>Not as hard as the reputation it has.
Totally agree. I think it was the prefect level of difficulty for me.
I expected it to be way harder based on the stories i heard about it on release. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't some rage inducing impossible game either. Just a pleasant challenge
Exactly how I felt. Liked it so much that should be playing the DLC soon.
I think the dlc is a bit harder than base game, but nothing crazy. It was great
I’ve always wanted to go for it but always found it intimidating. How long did it take you?
Not OP but took me approx 20 hrs including dlc. If I were to redo this I think I could do it under 10 hrs as there is def some stuff to get used to at first but once you get a hang of the concept it's not too bad.
If you love a challenge go for it. It's not easy at all but once you get use to it, you'll get better amd better.
This game has 43 trophies: 24 bronze, 12 silver, 6 gold, and a platinum.
They are very hard (8/10) and take 25 - 35 hours to complete.
Price: $19.99

I am a bot. More info about me
Just got it in the mail last night and spent three hours playing it this afternoon. This is far and away the hardest game I have ever played. Definitely would appreciate any tips especially what to use coins on. God bless anyone who has beaten this game, especially 100%.
Play a boss enough so you understand patterns. After that you can beat any boss with any weapon.
My 100% achievements playtrough took 2800 deaths.
Depends on how you want to play, and what boss you’re fighting. If you like to stay back and shoot from a far, like with ribby and croaks for instance, roundabout would be a good option. If you prefer to do higher dps and enjoy close combat (which can be harder) something like spread would be better. A lot of the fun of the game comes from trying different stuff and seeing what’s the most effective for any particular boss. But if you get bored or feel like you’re struggling with a specific boss, don’t feel bad about looking up the recommendations for that boss. Remember, you gotta have a great plan and then some! Hope you enjoy the journey :)
Thank you! I don’t really have a preference as far as style. Just whatever makes it easier to accomplish beating the stages/bosses. I only beat two in three hours. I think it’ll take some time to get used to the mechanics.
And that’s fine! When I was first starting out it was sooo hard but after a while you learn the movement and how to avoid stuff and it gets easier. Definitely get smoke bomb if you’re having trouble avoiding attacks, as it makes you immune to damage while you’re dashing. Helped immensely on my first play through
Definitely think and do research before spending coins cuz you only get so many . Chaser, spread and smoke charm are great
Yeah, I might have to restart
There’s detailed explanations on YouTube of locations of coins and if beat run and gun level without getting all coins you can go back to get them all
honestly. roundabout and spread or roundabout and crackshot got me thru most of the game
Ty
Get the improved dash asap. Also the roundabout shot is insane if you know how to use it
I'm just now getting my chance to do a playthrough of cuphead because I hadn't had access to any of the systems that it was on when it came out. I was dreading it because I don't like really hard games, but this is hard in a good way. this is fun hard. this isn't punishing hard like meat boy. this is I want to do better next time and I can't wait to go back in there and try again hard. it balances difficulty and fun perfectly. I'm surprised cuz I was expecting to put it on for a few minutes and drool over the graphics and then turn it off m because I was expecting a very punishing game but this is fun and challenging not rip your hair out, punch holes in the walls and get yourself evicted for screaming at the top of your lungs hard. though that may happen too because I've seen videos of people on YouTube doing that. but it's fun.
Well deserved of the popularity it achieved when it first came out.
yeah i was basically in the same situation as you (though i started being able to play cuphead for some years now, but at that time i never thought of it since it was too late, like years after it released) i was also always a fan of plataformers and remember watching all sort of content about the game when it came out in 2017. I started playing like 3 weeks ago, i think i just remembered it one day or something, ive been playin hell of a lot games recently so of course i had to try it after so much time of never playing it, i literally beat saltbaker yesterday and i finally leveled up the cursed relic to divine, now the only thing left for me is to defeat every boss in expert mode and get that 300%, i knew it was a great game, and after playing it i was exactly right.
I definitely think it's a fun great game I just don't know how much longer I'm going to last cuz I think it's more of a game than I can handle cuz I'm not a great gamer I just enjoy the hobby. I love Platformers there's some of my favorite genre video games. But I'll probably never stop playing it completely because it's just fun even if it's every once in awhile I go in there and mess around and then it's fun. Despite the fact that it's one of the hardest games I've ever played it is absolutely fun. Just to have a little more fun in the game I decided to look up and download a save file that was already 300% complete so I could kind of just go through and see what the rest of the game had to offer before I could get there myself
Welcome to your new obsession.
i’m about to play cuphead for the first time ever blind w my brother for my youtube channel. I was wondering if i need to know anything before jumping in?
Don’t feel like you aren’t “good”. You will die, over and over and over, especially for a first BLIND play through, but don’t get demotivated or anything, it happens to everyone.
thank you i’ll try not to get demotivated
yea relatable. I spent like 1 hour on a boss(simple mode not even regular)/ run n gun before. Its normal to rage in this game XD. Just dont get demotivated like wut the first guy said
Take a break if it gets frustrating :D
The default controls are a little weird. Make sure you have a good setup for your buttons. I can give you recommendations for a keyboard layout, but most people fare better with their custom controller setup.
appreciate it i’m plugging a xbox controller into my pc
Embrace death it’s a necessary evil
Yes, as we know, Cuphead is not an easy game. Mainly because of the boss fights. You gotta have skill for sure. This game really puts you to the test. I’ve been playing this since 2020 and maaan.. it feels damn good to get an S rank, especially one handed. Cuphead and Sekiro are the two games that really tests my skill. Are you a fan?
Maybe I should go into Super mario community and ask "who's a fan of Mario?"
Jokes aside, glad you enjoy the game and congratulations on S rank with 1 hand
lol I know that was dumb of me 😅 but yes, playing one handed isn’t too bad, but having to do two commands with one hand takes a lot of practice and focus. I appreciate it 💯
I love the game so much I got a 300% save file and all 42 achievements
One handed?! On the flower boss?! /j
Yup! Hated flower the most in isle one lol 😂
I think we all are a fan bud
It’s such a damn good, but challenging game for sure!
Yup, it's flipping amazing
Did you just go to the cuphead subreddit and ask who’s a fan of cuphead?
Yes I did. You never know. 😅
Cuphead game strategies and tips
Here are some effective strategies and tips for playing Cuphead:
Learn Enemy Patterns: Each boss has specific attack patterns. Spend time observing their moves to anticipate and dodge effectively.
Use the Parry Mechanic: Parrying pink objects not only helps you avoid damage but also builds your super meter. Practice timing your jumps to parry effectively.
Choose Your Weapons Wisely: Experiment with different weapons to find what suits your playstyle. The Spread shot is great for close-range, while the Chaser is helpful for tracking enemies.
Upgrade Your Charms: Equip charms that complement your playstyle. The Smoke Bomb charm allows for invincibility during dashes, while the Heart charm gives you an extra hit point.
Practice Makes Perfect: Don’t be discouraged by repeated failures. Each attempt helps you learn and improve. Use the practice mode to hone your skills on specific bosses.
Co-op Play: If possible, play with a friend. Co-op mode allows for shared lives and can make challenging bosses easier to tackle.
Manage Your Super Meter: Use your super attacks wisely. Save them for critical moments, especially when the boss is vulnerable.
Stay Calm and Patient: Cuphead can be challenging, so maintaining a calm mindset will help you focus and improve your gameplay.
Recommendation: Focus on mastering the parry mechanic early on, as it significantly enhances your survivability and damage output. Additionally, don’t hesitate to switch weapons and charms based on the boss you’re facing to find the most effective combination.
