Boss Levels
The core of Cuphead's gameplay revolves around boss levels. These are intense, pattern-based encounters that require players to learn and adapt to the unique mechanics of each boss. Players often find these levels memorable due to their challenging nature and the need for strategic planning and execution [1:2]
[4:2]. The game is primarily known for its intricate boss fights, which constitute the majority of the gameplay experience.
Run 'n Gun Levels
Run 'n Gun levels offer a different style of play compared to the boss fights. These levels are more akin to traditional platformers where players navigate through stages filled with enemies and obstacles. Some players appreciate these levels as a change of pace and a way to earn coins for upgrades [1:3]
[1:9]. However, opinions on Run 'n Gun levels are mixed; some players enjoy them while others feel they detract from the main focus of the game, which is the boss battles
[1:6]
[4:7].
Plane Levels
Plane levels introduce a unique mechanic where players control a plane instead of the usual character. These levels are often compared to shoot 'em up games and require players to manage movement and shooting in a different format. Some players prefer these levels over others due to their distinct gameplay style [2].
DLC Levels
The DLC for Cuphead introduced additional content but notably did not include new Run 'n Gun levels, focusing instead on adding more bosses [1:1]. This decision was met with mixed reactions, as some players missed the variety provided by the Run 'n Gun stages, while others appreciated the increased emphasis on boss fights
[1:7].
Player Progression Levels
In terms of player progression, Cuphead offers various difficulty settings and challenges. Players can aim for different ranks (S/P ranks) and achievements, which add replayability and depth to the game [3]. This progression system encourages players to master each level type, whether it's defeating bosses or completing Run 'n Gun stages with higher scores.
Kinda glad, I hated the run n gun levels. They just seemed like a waste of time and just felt pressured into doing them because I want to get coins for upgrades lol
I considered them to be like a “training grounds”. You had to learn new mechanics and implement them quickly.
The Bosses let you get a little too complacent where you are more using pattern predictions/memorization rather than spontaneous reflexes.
Maybe I’m alone in thinking I’m a little bummed. :p
I see them as a "refresher lvl" bc I keep losing to the boss and when I finish a run n gun it feels like I did something other than losing
I really liked them. It was a nice change of pace for me and the environments were always interesting
Agreed.
I don't know if someone has said this already but it would be cool if you could get coins based on your ranking in the Boss Fights! It's either that or a whole new different thing. My guess that it has to do on performance but idk
I'm a little dissapointed but this is not something Really bad only I like the Run N' Gun levels
That sucks so much tbh. I'd rather have less bosses for a new Run n' Gun or two
I'd rather no platforming levels from the base game with more bosses instead.
Oooh, something new can't waitt till it releases on the 30th
I know just release it now I mean I don’t think they are still working on it
I’d say the levels of gameplay would be as follows:
All S/P ranks, all achievements
All S/P ranks
All S ranks
Some S ranks, beaten all bosses on expert
Beaten all bosses on expert
Beaten some bosses on expert
Beaten all bosses A+ on regular
Beaten all bosses on regular
Beaten some bosses on regular, all on simple
Beaten all bosses on simple
Beaten some bosses on simple
Can’t get past tutorial
Where do you fall on this scale? I fall at number 6 because I have not beaten a few expert bosses yet
11, Just got the game
1, but I did it on every save file
1, but on two save files. First time was with double heart charm. The second time was with smoke bomb.
sadly 9
6
I have beaten a few expert bosses but it's the easiest ones
Maybe it's just me, but I would have liked the game to have more of a balance between boss fights and run n gun levels. What do you think?
Nah I personally didn't enjoy the Run N Gun levels much. The boss levels were much more memorable than those levels.
I prefer the boss levels and like the balance. I’d prefer less airplane ones, or make them a bit easier in expert mode.
seriously, what were they thinking with the shmup bosses on expert
Yeah I’ve nearly cleared it all on S and P. Just need Dr.Kahl and King Dice. Kahl isn’t too bad in that it’s not so random. Just haven’t put enough practice in yet.
The DLC is coming out soon, so I think your wish will be granted.
DLC already came out 21 days ago
I also liked the run and guns. Seems to be a minority opinion however.
So glad I’m done this game. I was absolutely horrible at this and even with the pay to win dlc it still took me 47 hours to platinum. . Great game just glad to be done with being stuck for 2 hours on a boss
Awesome, and congratulations on the plat! 😁
Thanks man
You’re welcome! ☺️

King dice our lord and savior
This can't be based on difficulty. Right?
it's not
I do not understand this tier list at all.
why?
Why my dude Cagney so low
Definitely the kind of game you enjoy so much that you want to reward it by buying the DLC.
Don’t say that, it is that hard, u are very good playing and that’s it, I also got it 2 years ago, my 2nd favorite after Dark Souls 1
I just thought it would be harder because of all the boogeyman stories around it. But by no means it's a walk in the park
It’s mostly kids especially with how cuphead looks.
I love watching my plat vid for this. I was so locked in at the end I was just jumping around the falling chip perfectly and I love reliving that moment. I have no idea how many hours it took to finally beat him but it was a lot. Congrats 🎉
The fun thing is that I did that parry on the video by accident and so glad I did because it would have taken me out. I was so locked in that I didn't even noticed the super was charged
I’ve always wanted to go for it but always found it intimidating. How long did it take you?
Not OP but took me approx 20 hrs including dlc. If I were to redo this I think I could do it under 10 hrs as there is def some stuff to get used to at first but once you get a hang of the concept it's not too bad.
If you love a challenge go for it. It's not easy at all but once you get use to it, you'll get better amd better.
>Not as hard as the reputation it has.
Totally agree. I think it was the prefect level of difficulty for me.
I expected it to be way harder based on the stories i heard about it on release. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't some rage inducing impossible game either. Just a pleasant challenge
Exactly how I felt. Liked it so much that should be playing the DLC soon.
I think the dlc is a bit harder than base game, but nothing crazy. It was great

I'm new at the game and I'm trying to pass every level with A+ (or I don't know if there is a higher grade)
Is there any list of the requirements to achieve at least A+ in each stage? Because I passed Forest Folies with a mark of 1:15 and all parrys, coins and HP fulfilled and i got an A, so i don't know what else i can do to achieve the A+
There are higher ranks. There’s S, and then for the levels the highest is P, which is obtained by beating the level without shooting enemies. Time, health and coins are irrelevant to obtaining P rank.
Completed the game for the first time about an hour ago, and I thought I would create this list to show how much difficulty I faced with each boss and other levels. The different tiers are in no particular order, they’ve just been sorted as to how difficult I found them to fight.
When looking at some other lists both here and online, it looks like mine is pretty different to a lot of other people.
Thoughts?
Goopy is the most polarized boss in the game. Some people experience a horrific struggle vs Goopy because of the small arena and his awkward jumping..to others, he works as intended (lol) in the role of an early-level boss.
my main problems with this list (which aren't really problems since this is your personal opinion)
The devil isn't the hardest boss, but I would say he's at least top 6, and especially not in the same group as ribby and croaks
Hilda Berg and the candy lady are pretty easy for cuphead standards imo, but I can understand this if you got confused on the UFOs in Hilda berges fight or if you didn't have homing weapons in Sugarland shimmy
The mermaid and phantom Express both seem to be controversial in terms of difficulty, but I especially wouldn't say phantom Express is harder than rumor honeybottoms or king dice.
We're the platformers that bad? I don't know if your counting all coins but either way I would bump most of them down a tier
I had my first playthrough a few years ago so I may have agreed with this more if I hadn't done these a lot already.
Honestly I found The Devil fairly easy compared to a lot of bosses. By the time I died for the first time fighting him, I was pretty close to the ending.
With the UFOs, I know that the different colours mean different things and since I’m colour blind I couldn’t see any difference with them unfortunately. For Baroness, it was more her initial three stages with the underlings that I struggled with because it was varied every round and I couldn’t plan ahead and make a solid strategy.
Maria just felt really easy to me, similar to The Devil, I didn’t die until right as her last stage began in the first fight. For the Train, I really struggled with the last two stages, I died about 20 times to those two stages. I’m not great with parrying.
I struggled a lot to pay attention to the enemy placements for last two platform levels. They were so random that I felt like my eyes were darting all over the place.
100% disagree
Goopy le grand really is the hardest boss in the game/j
Any in particular you disagree with?
This is obviously subjective, and ranked on how much difficulty I had with each boss.
Personally, Wally warbles on expert was 2 times harder then dr kahls robot on expert I also 300% the game today
Congrats on the 300%! This was just passing each level on the normal difficulty with any grade, most grades were anywhere from A to B-.
Congratulations
Y’all be struggling on the wrong bosses
Just got it in the mail last night and spent three hours playing it this afternoon. This is far and away the hardest game I have ever played. Definitely would appreciate any tips especially what to use coins on. God bless anyone who has beaten this game, especially 100%.
Depends on how you want to play, and what boss you’re fighting. If you like to stay back and shoot from a far, like with ribby and croaks for instance, roundabout would be a good option. If you prefer to do higher dps and enjoy close combat (which can be harder) something like spread would be better. A lot of the fun of the game comes from trying different stuff and seeing what’s the most effective for any particular boss. But if you get bored or feel like you’re struggling with a specific boss, don’t feel bad about looking up the recommendations for that boss. Remember, you gotta have a great plan and then some! Hope you enjoy the journey :)
Thank you! I don’t really have a preference as far as style. Just whatever makes it easier to accomplish beating the stages/bosses. I only beat two in three hours. I think it’ll take some time to get used to the mechanics.
And that’s fine! When I was first starting out it was sooo hard but after a while you learn the movement and how to avoid stuff and it gets easier. Definitely get smoke bomb if you’re having trouble avoiding attacks, as it makes you immune to damage while you’re dashing. Helped immensely on my first play through
Definitely think and do research before spending coins cuz you only get so many . Chaser, spread and smoke charm are great
Yeah, I might have to restart
There’s detailed explanations on YouTube of locations of coins and if beat run and gun level without getting all coins you can go back to get them all
Play a boss enough so you understand patterns. After that you can beat any boss with any weapon.
My 100% achievements playtrough took 2800 deaths.
honestly. roundabout and spread or roundabout and crackshot got me thru most of the game
Ty
Get the improved dash asap. Also the roundabout shot is insane if you know how to use it
