TL;DR
Installing DisplayLink Drivers
The first step in setting up a Dell DisplayLink system is to ensure that you have the correct drivers installed. For Linux users, downloading the driver from Synaptics is recommended [1]. This installation is crucial as DisplayLink technology relies on CPU-driven graphics over USB protocol, which requires specific drivers
[3:1].
Configuring X11 Settings on Linux
If you're using a Linux system and your monitor isn't being detected, you may need to create or edit the configuration file /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-displaylink.conf
. You can do this by running sudo nano /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-displaylink.conf
and adding the necessary configurations [1]. This helps the system recognize the DisplayLink device properly.
MacOS Specific Considerations
For Mac users, installing DisplayLink drivers is essential for compatibility with DisplayLink peripherals. Unfortunately, there is no hardware bypass available due to the nature of DisplayLink technology [3:1]. However, DisplayLink Manager offers experimental HiDPI modes that can help with resolution scaling issues
[2:1].
Troubleshooting Connection Issues
If you encounter issues with monitors displaying different settings or resolutions, it might be due to how they are connected (e.g., HDMI vs. DisplayPort) [2:4]. Adjusting display settings through the DisplayLink Manager can resolve these discrepancies
[2:5].
Alternative Solutions
In cases where DisplayLink isn't functioning as desired, consider using docks that support DisplayPort over USB-C or Thunderbolt, as these technologies offer direct video signal transmission without the need for additional drivers [3:4]
[3:8]. Additionally, exploring other connection methods such as using HDMI inputs directly may circumvent some of the limitations associated with DisplayLink
[3:10].
By following these steps and recommendations, you should be able to set up and troubleshoot your Dell DisplayLink system effectively.
I had some trouble getting my monitors to work via a docking station, but I found a solution and wanted to share my insight. Hopefully, it helps someone.

Go down to the Advanced button. Toggle whether or not to show resolutions.
On results in the list of resolutions like the top of the picture where you can also ask to see all resolutions. Keep in mind though that 2160p native 4K may look zoomed out without scaling.
Off results in the horizontal 5 options in the bottom half of the picture. The middle should do upscale 4K but with scaling like 1080p so that the display doesn't look zoomed out like native 4K.
Interesting, I can see what you are saying and it does indeed work for the 1st Dell monitor. But the second monitor (that is already showing the resolutions in a list) isn't affected when I toggle that "Show resolutions as list" setting. It just stays the way that it is showing the resolutions in a list
edit: The 1st Dell monitor is connected via HDMI and the 2nd is connected via DisplayPort in my USB-C hub if that makes a difference
For clarity, are you trying to view the display options for the second monitor as scaled options, like in the bottom half of the picture? Or are you trying to view display options as the list of resolutions like the top half of the picture?
I want both of them to be like the Dell S2721QS (1) (bottom image) where it has a 4k resolution but the UI and text is scaled to the middle option (3008 x 1692).
Is there a way to do this?
edit: I have an M3 Pro MacBook pro and am on the latest version of MacOS Sequoia
I just found this article and it worked! Figured I would share in case anyone else has this problem:
I have a macbook that does not have a displaylink driver. I want to plug the macbook into some kind of dock will "inject" a displaylink signal .
I don't get why mac users need to install a driver to share their screen over for instance a logitech swytch for conferencing. I would like to have a dock or something between the mac. I mean I can plug in my mac fine to a monitor with usb-c , so why must I need a driver to connect it to a display link peripheral?
There is even an article how to deploy drivers, but imagine if you are a guest for some organization and you don't have the driver installed. you are screwed and cannot share your screen!
I'm looking for any advice on some hardware that would allow you to bypass the requirement of having a driver installed.
display link was designed before USB C with a video signal over the cable was a thing. The display link protocol wraps display signals in USB 3.0 data packets
USB 3.0 is more compatible but clearly we are moving towards newer standards.
There is no bypass as the DisplayLink chip Logitech uses requires it. It is not normal graphics. It is CPU-driven graphics over USB protocol.
The reason why your monitor works without a driver as it’s normal graphics processing like over a GPU with USB-C DP Alt Mode. Under the hood it’s just physical DisplayPort over a USB-C cable medium.
Some monitors and devices have switches that can switch between DisplayLink and DP Alt Mode, but those are rare.
Is it only the Logitech Swytch that uses DisplayLink I wonder? Hoping to ditch the Swytch entirely and try to plug in the laptop directly to the rally bars hdmi input with a long optical thunderbolt 3 cable and adapter. As far as I know the bar has simple HDMI input and doesn't require DisplayLink.
This is the device I'm hoping to get rid of: https://www.logitech.com/assets/66004/swytch-qsg.pdf
Either way, this is some helpful info for me to learn. Thanks
There are a lot of non-thunderbolt USB-C docks that also use it
DisplayLink is crap, why would you want to use something that is using USB3 protocol (which has so many design problems) to emulate a framebuffer when you can just use a dock which takes the DisplayPort stream from the computer?
I have no clue, probably cost and compatability. I'm trying to figure out if you could plug your laptop directly into the rally bars hdmi. Like cut out the middle man that uses displaylink lol.
A (mini) PC set up with an HDMI capture card with software displaying the input full screen could work, but it's a bit silly and would add a little lag.
The nicer way would be if logitech implented DisplayPort over USB-C and/or Thunderbolt support on the Swytch's input thing, but that'd add cost on their end so good luck with that.
Yeah an intel Nuc would perhaps be a little overkill, but seems like the only solution. I was thinking maybe having one with two thunderbolt 4 , then mirroring the display input. Hoping Logitech comes to their senses and make an update to the hub. The swytch alone is like 1000 USD, so hopefully they can bear the cost....
Would be nice of course if the driver wuold come preinstalled on macos , since Displaylink seems like an established "standard" of sorts. It's just messy is all
A Thunderbolt port on a NUC still isn't a video input so would still need a separate capture card plugged in, if 1080p 30FPS and a bit of JPEGy compression is acceptable there are tons of dirt cheap USB HDMI capture devices now like https://www.amazon.com/Capture-Streaming-Broadcasting-Conference-Teaching/dp/B09FLN63B3
Apple wouldn't want to ship DisplayLink drivers as standard because they'd want to sell you the Apple TV (or other AirPlay licensed things) instead :^)

To get in contact with us, please click on the following link.
We would love to get to the bottom of this therefore, we look forward to hearing from you!
Presumably, this is posted here because this setup worked with some other OS?
I don't think Mint has any involvement in the rats nest of cables and VGA-to-HDMI adapters that are in the mix here.
Yes, it worked with Windows Vista that was originally installed on this Dell laptop. I'm trying different monitor emulators that can be encoded on the Comet KVM using older analog monitor EDIDs to see if it will work with It.
I was able to use the Comet and Dell together using the VGA-to-HDMI when Windows Vista was the OS using the default displays available on the Comet, but since installing Linux Mint, I have not been able to get a signal remotely except at the login screen.
All my old monitors are not supported in the new Dispaly manager 2.0

It was working fine until I upgraded the software.
This was the official download link that the app used internally to get updates:
https://www.entechtaiwan.com/dellddm/ddmsetup.exe
You can use webarchive.org to get older versions of it since the last one on there gives a notification to switch to version 2.
Edit: You need version 1.56.2103 to not get nagged about switching to DDM 2. The digital signature date is 5/28/2022
thanks man. dell could have encompass the new application to include this but limit the function when older monitor is detected but instead they have decided to screw us over by not even have this software appear when searched on their site.
you have really saved me from my headache
I can't thank you enough for this.
Thanksss!
I found a bunch of revisions on archive . org
seems legit ???
I encountered the same problem with the new one but thank god, i have a few versions saved on my local hard drive if you want it.
I hate Dell Display Manager 2.0 so much. The hotkeys just don’t work with it - at least not the way they did in v1. It’s a silly idea to want to move my cursor to the active window to then use the hotkey I set up to switch inputs, plus it doesn’t save unique hotkeys to each monitor like the previous version. Terrible interface and design. I also went back to v1. Worst thing is I had 2.0 also installed and when I ran it, it wouldn’t even allow me to back to using the previous version. Instead it said ‘Use Display Manager 2.0.’
Only after I uninstalled 2.0 would v1 work again. Glad you found it.
I hate that they took away individual hotkeys for swapping inputs on each monitor.
That’s gotta be an easy fix I imagine they patch soon.
For others seeking the official download link (if you update through dell display manager it downloads a new setup) is this:

I’d bookmark that
Hey floks, I recently was looking to get 4K @ 60Hz HDR out of the XPS 9500.
I went through some very disappointing threads stating that 4K support was very limited until I decided to make some experimentation myself by buying a bunch of dongles.
I created this spreadsheet to register how the dongles worked, have a look: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1A1KKLfCDwowODF7cinnvxecnagUyj7XjYeer7dfludA/edit?usp=sharing
These are my conclusions:
I ran all these tests by connecting the adapters to the left side of the XPS 9500. I’ll probably try the right one later.
Thanks for this man! I was using the included dongle and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't let me enable HDR. I then bought another dongle off amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075V68NVR/) that didn't work. Didn't even support 60hz. Finally went with the startech one and it worked right off the bat.
Thank you for this! I also got burned by Dell's lies about the ports supporting Displayport 1.4 (clearly stated so in XPS 15 9500 specs).
Hey y'all,
Looking for feedback if what I'm planning is doable. Picture attached.
Thanks!
You can not connect gaming PC to WD22TB4 via dp1.4. The display port on your gaming PC and the dock are both outputs.
You can achieve two 2K @ 100Hz or 120Hz at the max. 144Hz is not possible. For this, you need to
2a. Connect 1st monitor to either DP1 or DP2 or HDMI or USB type C.
2b. Connect 2nd monitor to TB port on the far right.
Gotcha so chaining the first and second monitor is not possible to maintain 100-120 HZ frame rate?
https://dl.dell.com/content/manual19874390-dell-thunderbolt-dock-wd22tb4-user-guide.pdf
Page 17
It doesn't appear that the dock will support 144 Hz.
All the resolutions seem to max at 60 Hz

Hi There, Im currently having issues with DisplayLink and the driver fedora-42-displaylink-1.14.10-1.github_evdi.x86_64.rpm, could You please share if You could install them and if they worked and how You installed them?
I tried compiling it manually but they didnt worked, and the rpm package maybe failing because the daemon service dont start.
Im on kernel 6.15.7-200.fc42.x86_64 btw.
Thanks in advance.
I tried that GitHub and it didn’t work. Please let me know if you’re able to get it
Yes. Successful in me.
We’ve just received two SD25 units for testing. Due to their remote management functionality, they appear on our network with their own MAC addresses, when no device is connected. This behavior is unwanted in our environment, as it could interfere with our network access control policies.
Additionally, the docks attempt to obtain an IP address via DHCP and try to connect to the Dell Cloud.
Does anyone know if there is a way to completely disable the cloud functionality?
We could go with the WD25, but it only supports 100W Power Delivery, which is too low for some mobile workstations.
After placing the order, we received an invitation to the Dell Device Management Console. This platform allows onboarding of the devices and deployment of policies, for example, to disable USB ports. However, there doesn’t seem to be an option to disable remote management (you could disable the Ethernet Port, but I guess it would be unusable then).
Apparently, the docks also have built-in Wi-Fi and can be connected to wireless networks via policy settings.
I contacted Dell support regarding this issue, but they told me that disabling remote management is not possible.
How did you get the full power out of yours? Any Dell laptop I plug mine into gets the low power warning. We got 2 SD25TB5s for testing. I thought it was weird how they would somehow push the power that we had always needed the dual connection for on the WD19DCS unless they only work with the 2025+ Dells in that way?
We don't have the SD25TB5 for now. Just the WD25 and SD25.
If it's just one cable, I assume the laptop needs to support the higher wattage for charging (Dell Mobile Workstation Pro Max Plus/Premium).
Which laptop do you want to connect?
Did you have to jump through a bunch of portals to get this connected to intune ? Our company is looking at these and it seems that you have to run software on the local machine to get it to enroll, seems very odd.
TIA
I dont know if you can connect these Docks to MS Intune. But for the Dell Cloud, it seems that you have to enroll policys in the Dell Cloud Portal and set a Option in the DHCP Server so the Docks will get the URL to connect to.
I miss a option to disable the standalone network connectivity of these docks. Currently, i am waiting for a reply from our Dell Sales Person but i guess there wont be an option to do this.
That TB5 dock though... 👀
I wonder if these docks will feature that field upgrade module upgrade path used by the WD19 family to upgrade an existing WD19 (USB-C with DP Alt Mode) to a WD22TB4 (Thunderbolt 4)? 🤔
Nope, no more modules. It’s all one piece now.
Oh no. That sucks.
Anyone know what remotely manage the docking means?
You can push dock firmware updates and configure USB port lockdowns without a host computer connected.
Not sure what platform they’d require a subscription for though… (no way this is a free service)
I hope they don't have turbine fans like previous generation and are fan-less like rest of the manufacturer make.
Noooo they still have the cables integrated so that you can't swap the incredibly short ones they provide for a longer one from a different vendor... this absolutely kills these docks for me.
