Troubleshooting Dell DisplayLink Issues

Common Problems and Solutions

DisplayLink docking stations can sometimes encounter issues such as external monitors disconnecting, freezing, or not displaying correctly. A common troubleshooting step is to unplug the power for 10-15 seconds and try again [1:2]. Ensuring that drivers are up-to-date is also crucial, as outdated or incompatible drivers can cause problems with display connectivity [1:3], [4:2]. Additionally, using different cables or testing other ports can help isolate the issue [1:4].

Driver Compatibility

For those experiencing issues after updates, it may be beneficial to roll back to previous versions of drivers. One user found that downgrading the Intel graphics driver resolved their disconnecting issue [4:3]. This suggests that recent updates might conflict with DisplayLink functionality, especially on systems with newer processors [4:6].

Alternative Docking Stations

If persistent issues occur, consider using docking stations that do not rely on DisplayLink technology. Some users have switched to alternative docks with success when DisplayLink docks failed to perform reliably [4:1]. It's important to note that non-DisplayLink docks may offer less compression and lower CPU impact, potentially improving performance [2:4].

MacOS Specific Issues

Mac users may face unique challenges with DisplayLink docks, particularly after OS updates like Catalina. If only the mouse pointer is visible on an external monitor, reaching out to forums or support channels specific to your dock model might provide solutions [3:1]. Sharing fixes within communities can also be helpful [3:2].

General Advice

When dealing with DisplayLink issues, patience and methodical troubleshooting are key. Testing various hardware configurations, keeping drivers updated, and considering alternative products can all contribute to resolving display problems. For ongoing issues, staying informed about updates and community discussions can provide insights into potential fixes [4:7].

Try unplugging the power for 10-15 seconds and try again. If that don’t get it, look for an update to the docking station. While I’ve seen lots of issue for the docking station, I have not encountered this one.

Is it displaying correctly over any other ports? Do you have another dock to test side by side with as well?

Do I need DisplayLink drivers if my monitors work fine already (Dell D6000 Dock, Windows 10)?

Posted by GuildfordThrowaway · in r/UsbCHardware · 5 months ago

Help me out with something I'm really confused on.

I have a Dell D6000 dock; this is DisplayLink compatible. I bought it for my work machine which is a Mac.

Using it with my Windows laptop; it displays both external monitors fine. I have not installed any DisplayLink drivers.

Do I need to? From what I understand, DisplayLink is for virtual displays so it will be useful with the new Macs that don't support more than 1 external display.

Am I using a subpar product and should get a non-DisplayLink product? Or The dock is acting as a normal dock when my laptop can already support 2 external displays? I have a thunderbolt port.

It probably installed the drivers automatically.

If you are happy with how well it works, no need to get something else. Displaylink, while not perfect, is pretty overhated. It works fine for office tasks, and depending on your machine even light gaming works fine (Played the entirety of portal on a Thinkpad T16+Dell D6000 dock @ 1440p 144hz)

Purely technically though, is it lower performance than a non-DisplayLink dock? I have a Dell WD19 too. For the Windows laptop, is that better?

DisplayLink is pretty much streaming a virtual display over USB. The main issues are added latency, compression, lack of HDCP (no viewing DRM'd content) and drivers, since you are using the DisplayLink virtual display adapter instead of a real one.

Yes, when that works, it has less compression, and less impact on your cpu performance.

Potentially worse in supported resolution and refresh rates though. But depending on your laptop it could also be better.

ISSUES with new MacOS and DisplayLink

After I updated to MacOS Catalina I can only see my mouse pointer on my external monitor. I have tried every troubleshooting method I have found. Every says they work for them but I have done them tons of times and cannot get it to work. Does DisplayLink not have a support??

External Monitors repeatedly disconnecting, reconnecitng, freezing.

Posted by boulay50 · in r/techsupport · 4 years ago

Working for months prior to an install of some sort.

Dell Docking Station D6000 - connected to two monitors connected via displayport. Upon plugging in the dock immeidately hear repeating disconnect/reconnect chimes. Monitors flash on and off. Display locks up and freezes. 2021 Dell XPS 13.

What i have done so far to no avail:

  • installed latest displaylink drivers
  • updated latest BIOS version
  • connected cables to other computer (cords work fine)
  • updated all Dell drivers
  • reset my computer and reinstalled windows

You're not alone. I'm trying to fix the exact same issue for one of my users. Also a Dell XPS 13 2021, also using a D6000, and we get the same repeated disconnects. I believe it has to do with the displaylink driver. I can get the behavior to change somewhat by installing older versions of the displaylink driver, but none of them work well. One older version even had the displays working correctly for about 20 seconds before it started disconnecting repeatedly again.

My hunch is that the Windows Update for "Servicing Stack 10.0.19041.925" caused the issue as the install date aligns with when this user first noticed the problem. Unfortunately, that's an update that is impossible to uninstall.

We have hundreds of Dell Latitudes that don't have this problem with the D6000 dock. It has only been an issue on this XPS 13, as far as I can tell.

I've ordered a docking station off Amazon that doesn't use DisplayLink, hoping that will work. Please post here if you figure anything out and I'll do the same. Thanks.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I’ve determined that this is not a monitor issue or a docking station issue. I’ve tried this laptop with other monitors and docking stations and the repeated disconnects are still present. It’s definitely an issue with the laptop.

really appreciate all the color on the issue. Dang - just ordered another docking station in hopes that mine was damaged but that doesn't seem to be the issue. Yes - please keep me posted if you come to a solution and i'll do the same.

So I don't have a fix yet (and I haven't tried the graphics driver rollback posted below), but I do know that docking stations that don't use DisplayLink work perfectly fine. I ordered the following docking station on Amazon and it's working well: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VL675DT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

In our case, we can't wait weeks/months for this bug to be ironed out so I'm going to give up on getting the D6000 working. In your case, I think it makes sense to try the graphics driver rollback, but in my case, it wasn't a good solution. This isn't my laptop and I was worried the driver might auto-update again on this user and then they'd have the same problem again. I didn't want the potential for future disruptions for this person.

I believe the core issue may be an intel graphics driver update ( 27.20.100.9466) that doesn't play well with 11th gen intel processors and displaylink. Downgrading to 27.20.100.9316 fixed the issue for me.

Just going to note for future viewers - we had the same thing in our org on multiple Latitude 7420 + D6000 combos, and can replicate it on any Latitude 7420 we've tried. (Install the update - D6000 docks stop working. Downgrade and they start working.) .

This is absolutely the correct fix.

Kindly share info regarding the monitors also, as this might help with indication of the problem.

Had a similar issue(s) though, but with an HP dock and notebook - didn’t happen as often, but it still plagued me why the hell it’s happening. Seems that dock outright didn’t like that I was using an UW monitor, together with a simple full HD one in vertical mode. After disconnecting the vertical one, the issues disappeared.

Another thing that bothered me was night light feature (in W10), which didn’t work if the screen was connected via dock, so basically my docking station is now a glorified usb hub ‍♂️

Issue with connecting Framework 13 to LG Display over USB 4.0/Thunderbolt 4

Posted by Alt-Chris · in r/framework · 3 months ago

Device: Framework 13 Processor: Ryzen AI 7 350 OS: Fedora Workstation 42 Dock: Wavlink Thunderbolt 4 Connection: USB4 Display: LG 4K 27”

Having an issue connecting my laptop to my display through my dock where it will go black after fooling around in the Settings app (which crashes)

Timeline of events: Connect Framework 13 over USB4 to Wavlink dock -> extends display to monitor -> go in Settings to change output settings (scaling on monitor is too small) -> Settings app freezes -> Force close Settings app -> both displays go black and monitor can’t connect to laptop (PC not connected) audio comes over speaker -> laptop display won’t come up without hard reboot (long pressing power on/off button)

Anyone have any suggestions or idea on a fix?

Do you have access to another dock or another cable? I had a problem with an FW13/11th which struggled with an external display which worked with a dock via USB; someone suggested that it might have been a clocking issue on the old generation hardware. I also own an external display that's really picky about cables.

1 upvotes on reddit
Alt-Chris · OP · 3 months ago

Unfortunately no, I did get it to work properly (idk what it was) and I was able to change the scaling finally. I'm just using the stock Thunderbolt 4 and USB-C cables that came for my monitor and dock

Dell G15 5511 dock with linux

Posted by fijasko_ultimate · in r/Dell · 4 months ago

Hi everyone

I am curious if anyone has managed to get a stable system with:

g15 5511 (nvidia rtx 3060)

dock D6000

xiaomi 34inch (connected via DP or HDMI to dock)

linux ubuntu 24.04

i managed to install displaylink-driver and get everything working, but it's not stable

i haven't really figured out what triggers it, but it's usually 'gpu has fallen off the bus' (sometimes lock screen, sometimes i just don't do anything for minute or two). i also switched off any power saving and left it in performance mode

so far i resorted to switching monitor directly to laptop HDMI and i'll see how it goes

Your laptop features a Thunderbolt 4 USB-C with the capability to fall back to USB 3.2 Gen 1 (10Gbps) with DisplayPort Alternative Mode as it is equipped with a NVIDIA RTX 3060 mobile chip.

The Dell D6000 works by using the host's CPU for encoding the display output signal rather than GPU, which causes a significant slowdown of the host machine.

It is recommended to use a WD19 (USB-C DP Alt Mode) for your situation. Consider purchasing the WD22TB4 upgrade module to upgrade the dock to Thunderbolt 4.

Hi!

Thank you for reaching the Dell Reddit Support.

This is Deepti and I will be assisting you.

I would like to know the following details-

  1. From when are you facing this issue?
  2. Were there any recent hardware or software changes done on the system?
  3. Was it the version of Nvidia driver installed on the system?
  4. Please confirm if just the screen goes black or the system shuts down.

Let’s run the hardware diagnostics to understand if there is any hardware failure in the system. To do so: 1) Restart the system. 2) Keep tapping F12 key when the Dell logo appears during the startup. 3) Select diagnostics from the one-time boot menu and run the initial test. 4) Once done, do let me know if you receive any error code and validation code.

You can skip the extended memory test.

You can also refer to the link: https://dell.to/32DxLgC

Also, share the system service tag over the private message. Service tag : http://dell.to/2z6cXm8

I have run the test, it doesn't show any error.

I haven't done any hardware or software changes recently. I can say clearly it might not be a software issue. Actually the problem is, screen becomes black sometimes. System continues its processing and working fine.

Monitor flashing/flicking

Posted by Insouciant-jack · in r/pcmasterrace · 1 month ago
post image

Hi all

I purchased a Targus DV4K dock so that my wife and I could plug and play at home with my custom gaming PC, my work laptop and my wife’s surface book. The dock claims to be able to handle two 4k monitors at 120hz.

When everything is connected, the left monitor flashes. This happens with each device. However, this doesn’t happen when everything is plugged into the gaming PC directly (ie without the dock).

I have tried swapping in/out HDMI and DisplayPort cables and downloading and installing the DisplayLink software (which the dock adopts) onto my devices without luck. Changing the monitor refresh rates from 60hz to 120hz doesn’t nothing either (other than change the speed of the blinking) Monitor software is up to date. So is the dock software.

Have attached some pictures of the monitor specs in the comments (ROG PG278Q is the one that flashes) and a video of the flashing.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Thanks Jack

Dell Visor Display Issues

Posted by Yourenotperfect55 · in r/WindowsMR · 7 years ago

Hi. I know that display issues with dell visor are common, but I feel like I've exhausted every option at this point. My Dell Visor's video starts to cut out after a certain amount of time while using HDMI. I've tried everything I could find; even the WMR troubleshooting flow chart. After everything else failed, I decided to try to use a displayport adapter (specifically the cablematters adapter that was recommended in this subreddit). When trying through displayport, it just gives a black screen. Yet again, the flowchart was no help. Is there anything I can try to finally get this thing to work properly? Thanks.

Unfortunately it looks like your PC is set to provide only Basic feedback & diagnostics telemetry. Would you mind following the instructions here to change the setting to "Full", restart your PC, and attempt to reproduce the issue again? No need to file new feedback, just make sure you restart your PC then reproduce the issue. Remember to make a note of the dates/times you see this happen.

My Dell Visor would work for 1 min if I was lucky, then just go to black. Turned out it was a dodgy molex connector on my pcie usb card. troubleshooting Dell DisplayLink issues

Here are some key considerations for troubleshooting Dell DisplayLink issues:

  1. Check Connections:

    • Ensure all cables are securely connected (USB and display cables).
    • Try different USB ports on your computer.
  2. Update Drivers:

    • Visit the Dell website or DisplayLink's official site to download the latest DisplayLink drivers.
    • Uninstall any previous versions of DisplayLink drivers before installing the new ones.
  3. Check Display Settings:

    • Right-click on the desktop and select "Display settings."
    • Ensure that the external monitor is detected. If not, click "Detect" to search for it.
  4. Power Cycle Devices:

    • Disconnect the DisplayLink device and power off the monitor.
    • Wait a few seconds, then reconnect everything and power on the monitor.
  5. Windows Updates:

    • Ensure your operating system is up to date, as updates can resolve compatibility issues.
  6. Check for Conflicting Software:

    • Some software (like remote desktop applications) may conflict with DisplayLink. Try disabling or uninstalling such applications.
  7. Test on Another Computer:

    • If possible, connect the DisplayLink device to another computer to determine if the issue is with the device or the original computer.
  8. Use the DisplayLink Support Tool:

    • Download and run the DisplayLink Support Tool to diagnose and report issues.

Recommendation: If you've tried all the above steps and the issue persists, consider reaching out to Dell support or DisplayLink support for further assistance. They can provide more specific troubleshooting steps based on your hardware and software configuration.
