TL;DR
Cleaning and Maintenance
One of the first steps recommended for dealing with fan noise is cleaning the fan. Dust accumulation can lead to increased noise, and cleaning the fan might resolve the issue [1:1]. It's advised to use canned air carefully and avoid spinning the fans too fast, as this could damage the bearings
[1:1]. In addition to cleaning the fan, replacing the thermal paste can also help reduce fan noise by improving heat dissipation
[4:2].
Fan Replacement
If cleaning does not resolve the issue, it may be necessary to replace the fan. Some users have found success in purchasing replacement fans from sites like Aliexpress [1:5]
[1:6]. However, finding official replacement parts can be challenging, especially outside the US
[3:3]. If you're considering a replacement, ensure compatibility between models, as some fans are interchangeable
[3:2].
Warranty and Support
Checking your warranty status is crucial when dealing with hardware issues. If your device is still under warranty, contacting Dell support or using social media platforms like Twitter can sometimes expedite the process [3:6]
[5:1]. Users have reported mixed experiences with Dell's support, so persistence may be required
[5:5].
Quiet Mode and Software Solutions
While there are no specific quiet fan replacements available, adjusting settings to "Quietmode" might help reduce fan noise [2:1]. Additionally, performing a clean install of the operating system or removing unnecessary software can sometimes alleviate excessive fan activity
[4:6].
Considerations Beyond Discussions
Beyond these discussions, it's important to regularly monitor your laptop's temperature and performance using software tools. This can help identify any underlying issues causing the fan to run excessively. If none of these solutions work, consulting a professional technician might be necessary to diagnose and fix the problem.
My fan ended up needing to be replaced for a similar symptom, I guess the bearing or something else was loose or misaligned, because I did clean the dust. This might not be the same with you, but if all else fails they do seem to just fail sometimes in my experience.
You are right, the fans need some cleaning. I personally just bought a new pair of fans and worked like a charm.
Where did you buy the new fans from?
Aliexpress. I thought I replied to your text. Do you still have the issue?
From Aliexpress. It'll cost you around thirty bucks or less. If you intend to do it, it's important to unplug the battery.
Open it up and have a look at the fan
You might have a lot of dust on the fan which causes more noise. If you can remove the case bottom and clean the fan that might work.
You can use an air can but do NOT overspeed the fans or you will kill the bearings. In fact don't spin the fans with canned air at all.
While you are at it you can clean out the radiators with the canned air.
Dell has an online service manual (and PDF) for instructions to disassemble.
It is possible your fan has worn out or a screw has worked loose so check for those potential issues.
I haven't done this kind of replacement before and I couldn't find much info on Google. I hope XPS users here can put me in the right direction. Are there any quiet fan replacements for Dell XPS 15 9510 (if there is such thing)?
There are none.
Quietmode
Hello everyone, it's been two days since my Dell XPS 15 9570 started to make a weird loud fan noise (coming from the right fan). I'm looking forward to replace it, I've seen the www.dell.com/manual guide to do so, but unfortunately I'm not able to find any site where to buy the official fan.
I only found a store https://www.parts-people.com in US which sells dell XPS 9560 fan. I'm from EU and if you find some other store please tell me.

The question is: is it safe if I buy the 9560 fan and then install it to my 9570? Or are they different?

Here's the audio record: 20190506.m4a
IMPORTANT UPDATE:
the noise seems to come from the gpu fan :( here s the video https://imgur.com/a/pmJduiI
IMPORTANT UPDATE2:
The issue has been fixed I've reached Twitter customer care and they sent a technician who substituted the cooling system. The problem was in the cpu fan.
Thank you.
Based on images of tear-downs it seems that the right fan is compatible between the 9570 and the 9760. There is a clear difference in the screw position between the left fans.
Do you have warranty?
If you do just complain on Twitter and they should send someone to your house to replace it
I've bought it like 6 months ago from the official dell site. I doubt they will send someone... :/

Hi there had computer since new but lately fan noises seem to sporadically get super loud then fade. No crazy load or anything. Just running basic school and work docs.
Help?
Replace the thermal paste and clean out fans.
Bump u/Mind_Matters_Most .... What did you cover your XPS with? I thought you skinned it, and that was a pattern at first. Then I realized they were air bubbles. 🤨
I didn't cover mine with anything. It's holding up well since 2018. I purchased directly from Dell and three wasn't just the normal fabric sheet between keyboard and screen.
Do what everyone has said already. Plus take the plastic peel off because it upsets me. Thank you
Not only you. It's disgusting to leave that on. Dazzles the laptops beauty
It might be time to do a clean install.
Taking off that bubbly plastic might help
We purchased my wife an refurb XPS 9300 (thank you Reddit for the help and advice). It arrived and all appeared fine. However, when the fan is running at higher speeds it buzzes as if it's got a bad bearing or isn't clearing the housing properly. When not pushing the processor it doesn't seem to be an issue and it's quiet. Having built and repaired hundreds of PCs if not thousands many years ago, this sounds a lot like a fan failure to my ear.
Am I missing something on some of these newer fans? Needless to say, not too pleased to be having issues right out of the gate with Dell, especially on an upper tier product.
It could be that your refurb set is someone's returned unit for fan noise issues...
Previous XPSes had a flap at the bottom which would conceal the service tag etc. Think the newer ones do not have it,,but on a brand new set, the service tag should be laser etched.
Yeah it could be, that wouldn't surprise me at all and apparently their testing processes aren't very good or they would have caught this. So far no information from Dell, no one on twitter has reached out and I don't really feel like calling them again.
I guess I could try to return it, but if they say my sale is on "hold" then I probably can't. What a weird situation.
Have two 9300 and there is no buzzing sound at all.
That's what I was afraid of. Been trying to go through tech support this afternoon what an unbelievably bad experience this is wow....
Well I didn't know what else to do so I took to twitter. After trying online support, I kept getting a message that said the unit was "not found" and to look for a number on a sticker on the bottom, which I don't have on the bottom of mine. The website auto detected a 7 digit code but still couldn't find it.
So I called support...what an ordeal...
I called and tech support said I needed to get info off a sticker on the bottom, my unit has no such sticker, it has one sticker that says "removable peel here" it has another that is green refurb sticker from the Dell outlet. That's the only stickers I have. Next they told me to "open the flap" on the bottom of the computer???? WTF - what flap? There's no flap on the bottom of this thing. So they transferred me to XPS team. The XPS team said they didn't have record of my computer and I needed to go to order support.
The first time I talked to order support they said they had no record of my order. I gave them the date, the order confirmation, etc and they said it wasn't in the system and asked what I needed. I said support for my XPS 9300. They transferred me to the XPS team. This time they again said no record of the system and sent me back to orders, which somehow wound up at the general operator. After another hold I would wind up back at order support.
This time I was told my order was on hold and hadn't shipped, even though the laptop was sitting in my lap...so I get transferred back to "XPS support" which was then general support and I was told my system can't be found and that I needed to talk to order/sales support. So back I go....
This time they told me that they couldn't find the system, asked how old it was, I told them I'd had it for 5 days, since Friday, told them the processor fan was bad and I needed to figure out the process for fixing it. They transfer me back to support...
This time at support they ask what's going on, then ask for my unit info and again ask about this sticker on the bottom which I don't have and then they tell me I have no warranty. I asked how could that be? I've had it for 5 days. They transferred me back to order dept... at this point I hung up and got on twitter.
Through all this sitting on hold I decided to look at my credit card because I was going to dispute the charge since I was shipped a broken laptop and Dell is unwilling to repair, because I knew I received confirmation from them on the system at the time the order was placed. The order hit my card, but then was subsequently reversed for some reason? I'm wondering if Dell had already staged it for shipping, and perhaps the "hold" that was mentioned by one of the other service reps was because Dell knew they had an issue with some of these but mine slipped out?
This is by far the WORST customer experience that I can remember in a very very long time. wish my wife would just go Mac...
Wow
That's like a Kafka play
tl;dr: XPS actually depends on bloatware to function, download this and set it to Cool mode.
Hello,
I come to you with a solution to the overheating issue plaguing the 2015 and 2016 models, assuming there is actually not a HW problem with your machine. There's been countless of Reddit threads and forum posts throughout the years with no actual solution that probably made you put the laptop in the closet and never bother with it ever again. Well, now you can actually repurpose it or give it to your parents.
Here are some things we have all most likely tried:
Fresh Windows install.
Power management tweaking.
3rd party fan and temp control software.
BIOS tweaks.
Battery replacement.
Cleaning the heatsink.
Repasting the CPU.
Undervolting.
So what's the secret formula? Well, at some point, you probably decided to debloat your computer from all the useless DELL software, right? Or you most likely didn't bother to install it again after a fresh Windows install because why would you. Yeah, well as it turns out, one of them is not actually that useless. Two, actually. Screw you MaxxAudio.
Anyway, I preset to you the Dell Power Manager.
Download, install, set to the Cool mode and that's literally it.
No more loud fans and insane temps when you're just browsing the web and doing the very least you can with a computer.
Obviously by this point, the laptops are very old so I still recommend repasting the CPU and cleaning the heatsink to get the best result, but the Power Manager is the major key.
Disclaimer: XPS veterans probably know about is I assume, thought it's weird nobody ever mentioned it in any of the posts. There might also be other weird things going on with your machine, but I hope this will be the final stop and help majority of all those poor souls unfamiliar with XPS machines and their dependency on DELL bloatware trying the figure out why their laptop is insanely loud and hot.
Cool mode actually locks the CPU on my Latitude 7290 and XPS 9360 at 50C with the fan disabled, so it is not really good if you want actual performance.
I just turn off the overclocking on both and they run fine.
Everytime I boot up my laptop I get this error message a loud beeping noise. The computer has always heated up very easily and the fan is always super loud. Anyone have this issue before?
Yes
Did you do anything to fix it?
Replaced the fan. This can be caused by a bad fan or by a bad connection with the motherboard. If you didn’t messed with the fan connector, the fan itself it’s probably bad.
good news! they're cheap. https://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=category&id=143&subid=1534&refine=fan
Cool thank you. Do you think I’ll just end up running into the same issue eventually though? Temp control has been an issue since the beginning on this thing and it’s only a few years old. But I suppose replacing those parts should help quite a bit. I don’t know much about computers if it’s not already obvious.
i have repasted my 9510 with ptm 7950 and it no longer thermal throttles, plus it actually is quiet when its not doing anything
you may also do a battery replacement while you're in there, depending on hwo much your cell has degraded(you can check the battery health with hwinfo)
You can do more advanced stuff to lengthen the life of the machine, but that takes special care. (Disassemble, clean, repaste) XPS (and laptops in general) just run hot
Try updating the bios like it says. That will fix almost all of your problems.
Can anyone who thinks their fans sound normal(not high pitched) under a bit of stress post some videos of the sound? I have the i7 6 core, 1650 gpu, 4k touchscreen and once the fans kick in, even just a little, there's a really high pitched frequency to it. It's leaving my ears ringing for hours after use.. I've run every update, adjusted dell power management, etc and no change. It's driving me crazy.. the actual loudness isn't bothering me much and I could be totally okay with it if it didn't have the high pitched ring to it.. I have a 2019 13" xps and it doesn't have the high pitch to it's fans.. Thinking of trying to exchange first as I love the laptop otherwise (except a few other minor issues..) but am trying to decide if it's worth it or if the replacement would be likely to have the same issue.
I think I'm getting the same thing on my xps 9500 - exact same specs as you. Did you find a solution or go for a replacement in the end?
Mine has too. Wondering if anyone found the cause and solution for it
Same here, haven't found a solution for it yet ^^
I'm having the exact same problem. The fans working have a very high pitch noise.
I've been noticing that my XPS (specifically the 15-inch model) tends to overheat pretty quickly when I'm running multiple apps or doing anything resource-intensive. The fans kick in loud, and the performance seems to throttle. Anyone else experiencing this? What have you done to manage it better? Are there any software tweaks or cooling solutions that helped you? Would love to hear your thoughts, especially if you've had success with any particular settings or cooling pads. Thanks!
My OG XPS 9500 used to do that a lot, these things are not well designed to handle heavy tasks. There are three things that I normally do to cool the thing down:
Go to task manager and disable the Wave Audio process, that thing takes up several mb of ram and causes overheat (it takes up more ram than it's own size!)
Lift the rear intake by a small bit. Sometimes I use a book or an eraser, there are certainly more elegant solutions to this but works. The make sure it's inhaling some fresh air.
Open there case up and clean the internals, sometimes the dust accumulate around two fans and the exhaust, just blow them off by high pressure gas or physical means.
Hope this helps!
My 9510 ran pretty hot because it's thin and had a i9 in it. What I've done
-replaced stock paste with MX6. Also replaced the pads. -Used power explorer to reduce max speed by 500Mhz.
Obviously reduces performance a bit but not noticeable in daily use. Temps definitely improved and it rarely goes above 90C now.
My m170, m1710, and m1210 models all had heat issues.
The m170 is purring along cool now after replacing the original paste and pads with PTM7950 and 13W/km pads. After thermo cycling the PTM7950 the CPU idle temp dropped from 55C to 40C and the GPU from 60C to 50C.
I dropped the m1710s down from the problematic Go 7900 GS to a Quadro FX1500, which dropped the temps by about 5 degrees. I am planning to give them the same treatment as the m170 for further temperature drops. The PTM7950 also lets temps recover much quicker.
The 7800 GTX in my m1210 had a bad heat sink connection when I bought it. Likely mobo failure beyond what I want to spend time on. Getting a new mobo with integrated graphics for cool running and stability, and will use the same thermal treatment as the others.
Besides the flimsy GPU cooling, these machines are solid builds, especially the m1710.
Mine is crashing during heavy usage
I have an XPS 17 and yes that happened to me too. I took it apart and the fans were clogged with gunk. I cleaned it and now it’s much better.
Honestly I’m pretty disappointed in the XPS and wish I never bought it. Should have gotten a Mac instead.
Something I wanted to share with whom it may concern:
Hello everyone. A few days ago I received my long awaited max spec. XPS 17. One of the initial disappointments when setting it up was the extremely loud fan noise. I tried everything in the Dell Power Tool - even with some paradox results, for example that the "Quiet" option was causing more noise than even the "Max" option. Nothing seemed to work.
And then I found something that seems to work perfectly: The solution is Windows, not Dell: You need to change the energy power saving settings (I have a German version, I do not know the exact translation). It seems that after one of the most recent updates Windows has introduced a kind of "no throttling mode" that causes the processor to always run at full power even when there is nothing to do. So what brought help for me was changing the energy settings from "Highest / Best performance" to "better performance" (German: "BEste Leistung" to "bessere Leistung"). Now the fan behaviour just seems fine. No noise in Chrome Browsing etc. Full power in 4k video editing, rendering and so on.
Hopefully this will help some of you.
Weird..... I've got the new XPS 17 as well and have never experienced anything like this before. I use the "optimised" profile in the BIOS setting and have never been bothered by the fan noise, even during gaming sessions.
Would be very interesting to know what your core temperatures look like in idle situations. Have you also adjusted windows/dell power management settings in some way?
My Windows battery setting is on max performance, Dell power management is set to primary AC and thermal management is set to optimised. I've re-applied the thermal paste on both the GPU and CPU, so maybe that helped with the temps.
CPU idle temp is between 45~47c
And could you do me the favor of taking a look at the bios C-State settings and the other "performance" settings. In my bios all have been preselected. Is there something different with yours?
Same with mine, everything has been pre-selected.
By default if you're using an Intel processor it will overclock with a slight lean towards overly aggressive (i.e. Task Manager's CPU pane will report a CPU speed higher than the base). In other words it will preemptively do it, and one of the solutions known is to put the CPU at 99% power within Window's power settings. This may or may not provide context to what's going on but on my computers adjusting it (i.e. disabling it) stops the fans of whirring like a car engine.
That sounds very interesting. Are you able to do this with the most recent version of Windows 10? All of those more advanced options seem to have gone from the settings menu when trying to edit the power settings. There are only very few options - five altogether, nothing with CPU speeds, only about display brightness and similar things. Do you think I need a clean Windows installation or is there a trick?
I also noticed that there a many settings missing under power settings (also the one where you can set the max CPU frequency). I have the key XPS15. I‘m pretty sure those can be brought back using some registry edits. Because on my desktop PC they still exist. But just disabling Turbo-Boost also is possible in the BIOS. However, this will lower the performance when you really need it. CPU running at ~2.6GHz vs 3.5-4.5 GHz max.
I don't have the computer in question up and running but I added a registry key that adds in "Processor Performance Boost Mode" to the power settings so I can forcibly disable it without needing to change it to 99%. This is because MSI doesn't offer any Intel Boost settings to the system BIOS. If you boot into BIOS and under I think power or performance there is an option for it turning it off is the hardware way of doing it, and identical to what I'm describing (I do it on my Dell Venue 11 Pro tablet, for instance).
It's not CPU speeds, but processor power state. It's in a percentage. If your computer is a Modern Standby system you will have to add those in manually as well.
Did you find any solution? The fan of my XPS 17 is running all the time (no influence from by the Dell Power manager") My machine is full with "heating units" like 64GB Ram, 2 SSD etc. But there should be a way to switch to silent when the notebook is not used a lot. I can't find any meaningful setting for really silent mode. (Dell support was not helpful here, they exchanged the whole internal hardware, but still a noisy notebook)
You mean switching this slider when clicking the battery icon on the taskbar in the bottom right? I‘m from Germany, too.
Exactly
Dell XPS fan noise solutions
Key Considerations for Dell XPS Fan Noise Solutions:
Check for Dust Build-Up: Dust accumulation can cause overheating, leading to increased fan noise. Regularly clean the vents and fans using compressed air.
Update BIOS and Drivers: Ensure your BIOS and drivers are up to date. Dell often releases updates that can improve thermal management and fan control.
Adjust Power Settings: Use the Dell Power Manager or Windows power settings to switch to a quieter mode. This can help reduce fan speed during less demanding tasks.
Monitor Resource Usage: High CPU or GPU usage can cause fans to run louder. Use Task Manager to identify and close any resource-heavy applications.
Use a Cooling Pad: A cooling pad can help dissipate heat and reduce the need for the fans to run at high speeds.
Thermal Paste Replacement: If you're comfortable, consider replacing the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. This can improve heat transfer and reduce fan noise.
Fan Control Software: Use third-party software like SpeedFan or HWMonitor to manually control fan speeds based on temperature thresholds.
Recommendation: Start with cleaning the vents and updating your BIOS and drivers, as these are the simplest and most effective solutions. If the noise persists, consider adjusting your power settings or using a cooling pad for better thermal management.
