TL;DR
Duration and Effect
Hair gloss is typically a demi-permanent treatment that deposits color onto the hair shaft. It can last several weeks depending on how often you wash your hair [1:1],
[3:1]. On the other hand, hair glaze is more temporary, lasting about a week, and is primarily used to add shine rather than deposit color
[1].
Color and Shine
Both treatments aim to enhance the appearance of hair by adding shine, but they differ in their approach to color. A hair gloss can subtly alter the hair color by adding a transparent shade or tint, which can be useful for maintaining or enhancing existing color [2:2],
[5]. Hair glaze, however, does not change the hair color permanently and is more akin to a tint than a dye
[2].
Application and Usage
Glosses are often mixed with a developer to activate the pigments, making them more suitable for those looking to maintain or slightly alter their hair color [5:2]. Glazes, being temporary, do not require such mixing and are ideal for those looking for a quick shine boost without commitment
[1],
[2].
Terminology Confusion
The terms "gloss" and "glaze" are sometimes used interchangeably, along with "toner," which can add to the confusion [2:1]. It's important to understand the specific product's intended effect and duration when choosing between these treatments.
Understanding these differences can help you choose the right product based on your desired outcome, whether it's a long-lasting color enhancement or a temporary shine boost.
I'm a little confused here and I'd love to gain a better understanding of what I need to do to get my hair looking the way I want it. For context, I have 2c/3a wavy hair. It's naturally ash blonde, but I dye it every two or three months with Ion Demi Permanent with a mix of 6w and 3w, so it's around a level 5 dark warm brown. I'd love for my hair to be super shiny, with ideally minimal damage.
From what I understand, a hair glaze is very temporary and can last maybe a week or so, while a hair gloss is more permanent, lasting a few weeks. The best hair gloss I've seen recommended seems to be the Redken Shades EQ gloss, but it seems like you can mostly only get it at a salon.
My main questions are:
• Is a hair gloss worth it in your experience, or is a glaze better?
• Would it be better to get a clear hair gloss, or a color that closely matches the color I dye it normally?
• How often should I apply a hair gloss if I already dye my hair every few months?
• Are products intended to boost shine, like Kenra Silkening Gloss serum or Color Wow Dream Coat, actually worth it?
I'd really love to hear about any experiences y'all have had with these products - either hair glazes, hair gloss, or shine-inducing products - and if y'all have any specific product recommendations.
Those terms are just remarketed semi and demi permanent.
I buy shades eq from a store that sells to professionals. It's a very nice demi permanent. It's acidic (many demi permanent are alkaline) and it gives great shine to the hair. I wash my hair every other day so it doesn't last very long on me about three weeks.
Usually the recommendation is to do it at most every weeks. There are some nice color depositing conditioners you can use in between. Goldwell makes two brunette shades.
Hey folks! I’m looking for a hair glaze….. or something? I heard of this product growing up AND my stylist (in her 50s) has also referred to using a glaze on my hair. But I can’t find anything called a glaze! Is this an older term? I’m looking for something that is more akin to a tint than a permanent or even semi-permanent hair dye. I don’t even want it to cover my grays, I just want to add a bit of coppery warmth to my mousy hair. Does anyone have suggestions or recommendations? Also, I’m obviously not a licensed cosmetologist, so it would have to be something I could get at Sally’s or Amazon or wherever. TIA!
My hairdresser used to do this to me and call it a glaze also, it was my gateway drug to going full color lol. I had strawberry blond and she would tint it more ginger/copper, it was subtle but still pretty permanent, I think the difference is that is was more of a transparent shade. I think it may have been Redken Shades but diluted or mixed with something else.
My recommendation if you just want a tint and don't want anything too permanent, get a color conditioner. I've been doing dark red now for years and these have been a lifesaver between color appointments to keep the red vibrant. I really like the Moroccanoil Color Mask, The Keracolor Clenditioners work well too. I've heard good things about the IGK mask, and the dpHue glaze also
People often interchange the words glaze, gloss and toner if that helps :)
Is there a hair gloss or hair product that would get me this light brown caramel colour? I have light brown hair with highlights but it’s not this tone.
A hair gloss is a demi-permanent treatment that works by depositing color onto the hair shaft, not by lifting or removing it. Therefore, you won't know the REAL effect/color unless you try it :(
Want something for plump and juicy lips . I have the glasting water , Planning to try this glasting gloss What’s your opinion on this ? 🙃
One is a gloss, other is a tint. Gloss leaves no stain, tint leaves a pigmented stain.
The tint colors are not flattering tbh, looks orangey when they wear off. Get the gloss for plump, juicy lip effect.
Attaching swatches of the glosses I have:
Thanks a lot im also looking forward to try the gloss as i want that glassy lip look hahah Hv u tried this ?
Yes I've tried both formulas, I like the shine of the glasting tint, but the shades are ugly. Gloss is better imo cause the shades are muted & give plump lips look. You can check my profile for review & swatches.
Thank u for the swatches and mini review ...dim mauve looks lovely 😍
One is gloss and thick consistancy Where tint is more like watery more fluidy texture
Glasting gloss is very glossy like glass on your lips , it’s good as a lip tint/lipstick topper the water tint is more like a lip tint stays for longer time and weighs nothing on lips
Thank u so much i wanted to try something glassy ❤️ btw hv u tried this glasting gloss?
Yes I have tried it, I love it so so much… I apply it on lip tints or laniege glaze craze
The gloss one is a gloss and won't tint+ its not that pigmented. The 2nd slide is a water lip tint which means it would be thin, if you have tried their juicy lasting series then you can say the water tint is thinner than that. Your lips will tint properly and gives a bit of that rom&nd lip tint shine. Refer to youtube for the colours as they are strong af💙
Edit: water tint is gel based, I was thinking of the suitable term.
Thanks a lot for explaining 😭 Love your comment Ig i should try this glossy one as i want glossy juicy effect
Yeahhh but you can't wear it on itself if you have pigmented lips as the colour won't show up, it's really subtle, I wanted to buy grapy way but I have lots of lippies to finish🥲
the first is a gloss and the second is a tint
has anyone used this colorcharm hair gloss? currently processing in my hair and i wanted to see what everyone thought about this or hair gloss in general. is this gonna even out the tone in my hair? i’ve got very faded peachy/pink hair after swimming and got this product from work (sally’s) and i’m still a little confused about what exactly this does
I am guessing that you just bought this and not anything to mix it with? It’s the pigment and you mix it with developer.
no i am not that stupid i work at sally beauty
I have not seen your hair, but if you have peach/pink hair this could have the wrong tones in it for you to get the color you want. Rose quartz usually are pink because they used purple pigments while rosé peach pink you are saying that you have get the pink from red. I can’t say for sure without the colorcode that say exactly what’s used to get a certain shade.
How did it turn out?
i need a hair gloss/glaze that will smooth my hair while making it the colour in the last photo or my natural root colour. I’m struggling to find videos online and i’m curious to see what you have to say here!
I had good experience with Kristin ess gloss BUT only with brunette I haven’t tried with my blonde.
Hi,
I’m naturally redhead but it is definitely more of a strawberry blonde now (which I like!) however I’d like to try a deeper shade of red more like my natural.
I was looking into hair gloss/glaze but wondering if they actually fully remove after 10 washes as I’d likely want to revisit my current hair color at some stage?
Also - any suggestions for the best hair gloss/glaze?
I’ve had a similar issue with my hair. As I’ve gotten older it’s lost its vibrancy and brightness. Last week my stylist put a Danger Jones gloss in and I absolutely love it. It brought back the bright shiny hair I had when I was younger.
As a redhead, I’ve used the kristen ess one in copper but be careful I left it on too long and looked like a pumpkin lol
I used this too, and i really like it. First time I left it on the full 20 minutes and the color was kind of intense, but that only lasted like the first two washes. After that, no one noticed/asked me if I colored my hair. But I felt it still gave some oomph back and also totally covered my grays, which was a pleasant surprise because it says it won't. I definitely recommend it!
DP Hue, I’ve used the strawberry blonde, copper, and caramel.
I don’t have any answers for you but I’m getting a gloss myself to help my natural red hair be more vibrant. I’ve tried some color depositing products at home but they haven’t really worked. If the gloss doesn’t work I might start asking my stylist for red foils 🫣
The lady at Sally’s said that I could use both of these because i was looking for a colored gloss. She said i can use the brown first. Not quite sure how to add in the clear. I took a pic of the directions on the back

I would either mix them together, or apply the brown one first and then apply the clear one after rinsing. It depends on how much coverage you're trying to achieve because adding clear to brown will make it less pigmented and more sheer.
btw i have high porosity, colour treated, wavy long hair. Please share if you've had any experience with these and if they're worth adding into your routine. Also, do lmk how you incorporate hair gloss in your routine.
as long as they don't cause hairfall
What is better? What lasts longer? What are the biggest differences? What do you guys prefer? I’ve always done wax and thinking about “layering” by putting on glaze and topping off with wax. Opinions on that?
Open ended question and they both serve different purposes.
You have pure carnauba waxes which will last 2 weeks to synthetic waxes that are basically sealants marketed as a wax (in paste or liquid form) that can last a year (like fusso).
Generally speaking a glaze has no durability and its primary purpose is to add depth and gloss by filling in the top coat (clear or non clear) to make the clear optically even thus making it more reflective. Because its a temporary filler, this is why body shops use glaze after freshly painting. It doesnt seal the paint, which is important while its still in the curing phase. (This is why some polishes and waxes have body shop safe on the label).
Wax on the other hand is used to “protect” the top coat, and doesnt do much to fill in the imperfections in the clear. While itll add gloss, its more for protection against the elements.
I glazed back in 2005 when i first started detailing before i knew what a rotary or dual action did. It added immense gloss but it was very short lived. Eventually i just stuck to waxing and moved on (to coatings).
Most glazes have solvents which will affect the ability for a wax to adhere so note when laying glaze over wax.
Hope this helped.
This was extremely helpful my man. I honestly didn’t know carnauba waxes only last 2 weeks. i was under the impression that they truly lasted about 3 months. Also didn’t know that a poly wax is basically a sealant, very helpful. thank you so much. if you have any other tips regarding wax or glaze please feel free to add on.
Glaze is like make up sort of, best use for it if you are going to a show and want to add a little extra shine and pop, at least in my opinion. For a causal detailer, a good synthetic wax/sealant applied every 3 months or so should be good enough I believe
Glaze kinda sucks and only fills scratches temporarily. Doesn't last long or provide much protection. Waste of time, in my opinion and experience.
