TL;DR
Apply hair gloss on damp hair for easier application and even saturation [1:1].
Application Method
Hair gloss is best applied to damp hair. This helps spread the product evenly across the strands. While applying to dry hair is possible, it requires careful attention to ensure even saturation [1:1]. The dampness allows the gloss to adhere better and distribute uniformly.
Product Recommendations
Several brands have been recommended by users for their effectiveness in enhancing shine and smoothness. Redken's acidic gloss has received praise for making hair silky smooth [2:1]. L'Oreal Glycolic Acid gloss is noted for its ability to add shine and smoothness
[2:4], though some users prefer L'Oreal gloss with color for added intensity
[2:6]. Kristin Ess gloss was mentioned positively for brunette hair
[5:1].
Effectiveness and Duration
Hair gloss treatments can enhance shine and smoothness, but the results may vary depending on hair type and condition. Some users found noticeable improvements after multiple uses [2:2], while others felt the effects were minimal, especially on virgin or curly hair
[2:7]. Gloss treatments are typically temporary, lasting about 6-8 weeks
[2:5].
Considerations for Natural Hair
For individuals with natural hair who are concerned about altering their natural color, clear glosses are an option that enhances shine without changing the color [3:1]. Color glosses can be mixed to achieve desired tones, but it's important to consider the underlying pigments to avoid unintended color shifts
[4:1].
Additional Tips
When using hair gloss, it's essential to follow the instructions provided with the product, including any necessary mixing with developer if required [4:2]. For those seeking specific color outcomes, consulting with a professional or conducting a patch test may help ensure the desired result.
Hi, does hair gloss need to be applied with fully wet hair or does it need to be half dry or something in between?
With damp hair it’s easier to spread the color, dry hair just have to make sure you saturate evenly
Has anyone tried professional hair gloss treatments at the salon?
How about at-home treatments, such as from drugstore brands (L’oreal, Glaze) vs. higher end brands like Redken, Keratase, etc.?
Did you find that it made a difference after multiple uses or was it a gimmick?
Anecdotally, my cousin came over and her hair looked so shiny, healthy and extra black. I asked if she had done anything different and she said she got a hair gloss at her salon. It looked great on her and I really noticed!
The redken color acidic gloss is insane. My hair is silky smooth after. Not a gloss but highly recommend sleeping with the kerastase 8hr hair lotion in as well. I feel the lotion prolongs the soft feeling of the gloss without it looking oily/losing volume.
That’s good to hear! Have you tried the L’oreal glycolic gloss? How was it?
I haven’t but it’s next on my list for sure. I don’t think hype for a type of hair product has ever matched its performance until I tried a gloss.
I have it and honestly, it’s pretty meh. I prefer the other L’Oréal gloss w colour! I like the added intensity w the hair dye and it added a lot more shine compared to the glycolic gloss.
I love the L'Oreal Glycolic Acid hair gloss. It definitely makes my hair shiny and it also makes the hair incredibly smooth.
Idk if this is true but I tried to get a hair gloss at the salon and the lady said it was basically clear toner. So I just got toner for my highlights instead. I think it’s only supposed to last 6-8 weeks at most.
I have used up around half of my bottle of Kerastase Chroma Absolu Color Gloss. I have virgin curly hair and don’t really notice any difference. I wanted more shine and reflection but honestly I don’t see that happening. I had seen it work well on YouTube for someone with coloured hair so maybe that is a prerequisite.
Hi! My friend wants me to get my hair glossed with color with her and I’m totally interested but I have natural hair that has never been dyed and I don’t want to mess up my natural color because I love it so much. I was wondering if a color gloss will mess that up? What even is in a hair gloss should I just do a clear one? Mg hair is brown but I have some red that is really bright in the sun so I was thinking about using kristin ess hair gloss in ruby or in copper. This is what my hair looks like (don’t mind the bangs my AC was on in my car lol). I know it doesn’t seem that red but it is in person I have never been able to get a picture of it tho. I just really want my hair red somehow with out damaging it.

you are on the right track! Hair gloss i'm 90% sure it's washable because it can be used as a weekly treatment. You can mix colors together since you have brown but want some red. You can get it on amazon called dpHUE. Much better for your hair than dying it! ( but i think just a brown gloss would look great on you! )
has anyone used this colorcharm hair gloss? currently processing in my hair and i wanted to see what everyone thought about this or hair gloss in general. is this gonna even out the tone in my hair? i’ve got very faded peachy/pink hair after swimming and got this product from work (sally’s) and i’m still a little confused about what exactly this does
I am guessing that you just bought this and not anything to mix it with? It’s the pigment and you mix it with developer.
no i am not that stupid i work at sally beauty
I have not seen your hair, but if you have peach/pink hair this could have the wrong tones in it for you to get the color you want. Rose quartz usually are pink because they used purple pigments while rosé peach pink you are saying that you have get the pink from red. I can’t say for sure without the colorcode that say exactly what’s used to get a certain shade.
How did it turn out?
i need a hair gloss/glaze that will smooth my hair while making it the colour in the last photo or my natural root colour. I’m struggling to find videos online and i’m curious to see what you have to say here!
I had good experience with Kristin ess gloss BUT only with brunette I haven’t tried with my blonde.
btw i have high porosity, colour treated, wavy long hair. Please share if you've had any experience with these and if they're worth adding into your routine. Also, do lmk how you incorporate hair gloss in your routine.
as long as they don't cause hairfall
Also, to add on to not using too much at a time, use a hairdryer on low power to speed the dry time. You'll want to add some teasing in too for texture to get it to hold better.
i teased it but then when i straightened it back it just lost the poofyness. Now its a flat spike
You’ll want to keep the teasing in there. Smooth it out as best you can, apply hairspray and shape the hair and then blow dry. Then trim any fly away hairs. Looking up tutorials on YouTube or TikTok will be very helpful, it takes a lot of practice!
You need to be careful not to apply too much and to have it at the right distance of 30cm or else it‘ll get really crusty. Brush or wash it out
Helloo! I recently bought the Garnier glowing lengths hair mask and my hair came out super silky, smooth, shiny with super bouncy waves and i was super happy. But when i used it again for the second time, my hair went back to the standard, dull, frizzy and dry. I tried using it for longer time in my hair but it didn’t help. How do i fix this issue?
For extra measure, i did not shampoo. Here are some pictures of before and after!
Im grateful for any advice!
Guys i figured it out. Properly wash with shampoo, it gets shiny again. Just need a frizz controller to maintain hair like the first photo 😴
lol this might be crazy but i managed to find a picture of the instructions. it looks like yours is in another language? https://imgur.com/a/fKjz5Uj
Shampoo before using a hair mask. Also idk if you already do but if you don’t try towel drying your hair & get rid of the excess water prior to applying the mask if your hair is wet. The mask absorbs better with damp hair and not plopping wet hair
Didn’t work :(
I will definitely do that, thank you!!
Personally, I always shampoo before using a mask. If you have any oils or other styling product built up on your hair before you use the mask, the mask does not have the capability to penetrate in the same way that it would on clean hair.
If you are not using any sort of leave in conditioners or styling products after wash, I recommend investing in something that will help you cut down on the frizz rather than using a mask. A mask may leave a light film on your hair to help resolve what you are trying to combat, however using something that is meant to rest on your hair for a long period of time will help achieve your desired effect more consistently and help maintain it between washes.
Thank you a lot for the thorough explanations! I’ll see to it to integrate a leave in conditioner and see how it works. Will my hair end up drier if i condition my hair today again? Or shall i wait?
No, conditioning your hair every time you wash will not cause your hair to be any drier, it should actually make it feel soft every time! Do not condition your hair unless you’re planning to wash it before hand.
If you do notice that conditioning your hair every time you wash makes your hair more frizzy and more dry, stop using your conditioner. There may be ingredients in it that are giving you the false illusion of making your hair healthier when it is actually causing harm to your hair.
Aren't there instructions on the label?
i’m not sure if clarifying shampoo would work but i’d try that
I used the hair mask for the first time last week if that changes anything 😅
That could help. Masks work best when used after a clarifying shampoo too.
Hi, my hair is a mix of wavy/straight in parts. It's so weird that a few years back they used to be very straight after shampoo, without any styling.
I guess due to humidity it's become frizzy.
I generally keep it open normally. But it looks very messy sometimes. Any ideas on how to style it without much heat and what kind of haircut could suit me.
Any way i can make it all proper curly/wavy or proper straight without much heating etc.
I don’t know much about haircuts but I have a medium length hair and I follow a simple routine everyday…. Spray some rosemary water, and while it’s damp I just apply a hair moisturiser/ leave in conditioner…. And if it’s any special event and I want my hair to have a hold I’ll just apply some hair mousse as well… and then simply blow dry at lowest heat settings with a diffuser if I want some curls/waves….
Use fino hair mask. Its a lil expensive but so worth it
Long layers and use some curl cream achhe waves aa jae ge
Your hair looks pretty good as it is. I did all the curly wavy routine bs, burnt a lot of money and realised the time, money, energy spent on it is not worth it. I double shampoo, use a nice conditioner and some hair serum now. It is so freeing. Getting shorter layers also helps. Makes it look more voluminous.

Recently been growing out my hair so I was wondering. Do you have to wash it with shampoo first or do I was it off after with shampoo? Do I massage it into my scalp or just brush it through my wet hair?
Apply it after thoroughly shampooing your scalp. Double shampooing is great! Put the conditioner on your mid length all the way through your ends and leave it on a couple minutes. Make sure that you rinse your hair very well.
Good to know, Thank you I appreciate it!
Adding in that when you apply the conditioner, make sure to squeeze some of the excess water out of your ends so that the conditioner can sit on it without just dripping off.
This and leaving it on for a few minutes!
it definitely depends on the person for what advice will work best! As someone who gets very greasy hair very quickly, not conditioning my scalp helps my wash last longer and my hair look nicer. But for someone with very dry hair, i can understand the scalp likely needs that extra moisturizer. Good point!
We noticed you mentioned moisturizing hair. Please view this archived post on this topic.

Make sure you use your fingertips to do your scalp and do a back and forth kind of motion. Try not to make claws and just start scrubbing the crap out of your scalp and hair haha.
Agreed with all of the above comment! Just want to add that with straight-ish hair, it helps to kind of finger comb the conditioner through your mids to ends so that it’s actually detangling…. I can’t speak for curly/wavy hair tho.
When I first started dating my cis male partner, he had had long ass hair for over a year probably and I had to get in the shower with him and teach him how to condition and detangle his hair, lol…. He had never had long hair before and so he just never learned a skill that I took for granted because I learned it so young. ALSO—if you have super tangly hair (or even just slightly tangled)—it really helps to brush it before getting in the shower!
apply your shampoo to your scalp, scrub, and rinse it out thoroughly, then apply your conditioner to the ends of your hair up to mid length. don’t condition your scalp. rinse your conditioner out thoroughly. then, wash your neck, shoulders, and back to ensure you dont get body acne from your conditioner.
I only get acne on my back and I wash up while my conditioner sits in my hair. Going to use your advice to see if that helps at all.
thats where your natural oils are so you don’t need conditioner. if you do condition there, it will look dirty much faster
Assuming this is a rinse-out conditioner, you have a few options depending on your hair's needs and your scalp situation.
Conditioners work best when used after shampooing the hair. The way they soften the hair is by leaving a coating of conditioning agents on your hair, so you would want to leave those on, don't shampoo it again right afterwards. Definitely rinse it out though, unless it's a leave-on conditioner. The label should make it clear whether it's a leave-on conditioner or a rinse-out conditioner.
Whether you massage it into the scalp or not really depends on what works best for you. Some people have great success with applying it to all of the hair and massaging it into their scalp. With short or medium-length hair this is the easiest way to apply it. With longer hair, some people prefer to only apply conditioner to the midsection and ends, and avoid the roots. You can try experimenting and see which way you prefer.
If your roots tend to get greasy pretty quickly after shampooing, or if your hair is fine and you find that conditioner tends to result in insufficient volume at the roots, then you might prefer avoiding applying conditioner to the roots.
How to apply hair gloss
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply hair gloss:
Choose the Right Gloss: Select a hair gloss that suits your hair type and desired effect (clear for shine, tinted for color enhancement).
Wash Your Hair: Start with clean, damp hair. Use a gentle shampoo and conditioner to remove any product buildup.
Towel Dry: Gently towel dry your hair to remove excess water. Your hair should be damp but not dripping wet.
Section Your Hair: Divide your hair into manageable sections (usually 4-6) to ensure even application.
Apply the Gloss:
Comb Through: Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute the gloss evenly throughout your hair, ensuring every strand is coated.
Processing Time: Follow the instructions on the product for how long to leave the gloss on (usually 10-30 minutes). You can cover your hair with a shower cap to enhance the effect.
Rinse: Rinse your hair thoroughly with cool water to seal in the gloss and enhance shine.
Style as Desired: After rinsing, you can style your hair as usual. Avoid washing your hair for at least 24-48 hours to allow the gloss to set.
Tips:
Recommendation: Consider using a semi-permanent gloss for a more natural look that fades gradually, or a clear gloss for added shine without altering your color. Brands like John Frieda and Redken offer great options.
