Boss Concepts and Expectations
The community has expressed interest in a wide variety of potential boss fights for the "Shadow of the Erdtree" DLC. Some imaginative concepts include a Frost Giant, a multi-elemental bear, a realm-jumping boss, and a wounded giant bat that sings opera [1]. Additionally, there's speculation about fighting significant lore characters like Miquella, Godwyn, and the Gloam Eyed Queen
[1:1]. While these ideas are speculative, they reflect the community's desire for unique and challenging encounters.
Strategies for Difficult Bosses
Players struggling with DLC bosses have shared strategies to overcome them. One user recommended increasing Vigor to 60 and using the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman for better defense [2:2]. Another strategy includes parrying and using critical hits with specific loadouts, such as Miseriecorde with bleed and Carian Retaliation
[2:1]. Staying close to bosses during certain phases and dodging rather than blocking can also be effective
[3].
Scadutree Fragments and Progression
A key aspect of the "Shadow of the Erdtree" DLC is the Scadutree fragments, which are crucial for leveling up your character and summons. These fragments increase damage dealt and decrease damage taken, making them essential for dealing with the tougher enemies and bosses in the DLC [5:2]
[5:3]. Players can achieve high levels of Scadutree without defeating any bosses, providing an alternative progression path
[5:5].
General Tips for New Players
For newcomers to the DLC, it's important to focus on obtaining Scadutree fragments early on to keep up with enemy scaling [5:3]. Avoid engaging with particularly tough enemies like the giant flame golem unless you're well-prepared
[5:4]. The DLC offers new areas and exploration opportunities, likened to a sequel to the main game, so take time to enjoy the content and progress at your own pace
[5:4].
Overall, the "Shadow of the Erdtree" DLC promises exciting new challenges and mechanics, requiring players to adapt their strategies and utilize new progression systems effectively.
I heard thirty bosses were discovered so that's how many I came up with.
Frost Giant
Lord Crystalian
A Boss with Three or Four Stages
A Multi-Elemental Bear in the Woods
A Wounded Giant Bat that Sings Opera
A Realm Jumping Boss
A Spider Boss
A Jellyfish Boss
A Crayfish Boss
A Lion Guardian Boss
Fire Prelate and Frost Prelate Duo Fight
Giant Flowers with the Crucible Knight
A Third Godskin
Extended Version of Beast Clergyman
Callback to the Adjudicator
A Boss That Rotates Gravity
A Platforming Focused Boss
An Additional Phase for No Damage
A Shark Boss
Tibia Mariner in Lava or Deep Waters
True Version of the Giant Skeleton
Deathrite Bird including Both Stages
Flame Chariot with Two Fingercreepers
A Better Mimic Tear Boss
A Skinpeeled Boss with Blood Damage
The Best Duo Fight in the Series
A Giant Turtle Boss
A Floating Weapon Boss
A Giant Wasp
Serosh, the Beast Regent Lion
Surprise final boss: Turtle Pope
“Your heresy was not pardoned, Tarnished. Apologies, but this is what I must do for a true Golden Order!” bitch slaps you and fucking dies
Something we never seen. So none of this list 🙃
If one makes it from my list I will be extraordinarily happy.
I'm rooting for "Best Duo fight in the series"
Serious answer: Miquella, Godwyn and Gloam Eyed Queen seems to be talked out so much but knowing how fromsoft handles their DLC we probably fight the Nomad Merchant leader, Golden Rune Bear and a Scarab boss on the moon.
Then you find out after reading the ‘rubbish’ item description that the Nomad Merchant Leader was secretly Miquella all along
Nice choices.
Cory in the House and Bill Clinton
As the title suggests, I've been struggling with the Erdtree final boss for a couple of weeks now. This is my first souls game and I thought everything was managable up until now. Was curious if anyone had any advice/constructive criticism on my set up:
Rivers of Blood+10. Blood Nagakiba+25
Full Crucible Armor Set
Talismas:
I'm a bleed build Samurai. My stats are:
VIG 45 Mind 11 END 40 STR 25 DEX 70 INT 9 F 8 ARC 40
45 Vigor is a glaring issue. Should be at 60.
Take points out of other stats to put into Vigor. Namely Strength and Endurance.
Dragoncrest Shield is the weaker version of Dragoncrest Greatshield- replace with this.
Crimson Amber Medallion +3 exists, can replace with this. Or use something else like Crimson Seed +1 for stronger healing flasks (won't need to waste an extra flask getting closer to full health from critically low)
Took your recommendations and managed to beat them, thanks dude!
Re-spec and use a shield. Or just get good.
Summon the troll and use heal from afar. He can solo radahn for you
Personally, I find my PCR loadout to be fun as hell and a very viable way to beat him.
Miseriecorde w/ bleed on right hand
Messmer soldier shield on left hand with Carian Retaliation
Dragoncrest greatshield talisman
Golden braid
Dagger talisman
Double headed turtle talisman
With this loadout I learned to parry him and kill him with critical hits. Holy hell it’s fun
I was struggling hard, almost quit the game over him. This made the difference in the end:
- ramping up fire resistance with a necklace, a ring and the Executioner's set found in >!the light Crevice behind an illusionary wall!<
- staying absolutely close to him at all times in phase 2, dodging a lot/trying to always get behind him for his flame thrower attacks (also coming with the consequence that he never did his devastating stab attack anymore)
- blocking all Godfrey like AOEs during phase 1 and phase 2
- dodging not parrying/blocking his projectiles
Used a Greatsword and all his weapon swings I tried to parry and punish with a Swift Attack followed by an uncharged Mortal Blow when possible (rather tedious and time consuming, but I usually have a defensive playstyle and don't mind when it takes longer). He was really hard for me, I'm happy now that I didn't quit.
The water throwables help too.
I got him the other night. And honestly it didn't take too many tries..maybe like 10 or so.. which isn't too bad
At first he was going crazy on me..but then I picked up on a few things that made it a ton easier.
PHASE 1
If you brink guard his combo you can stun him without actually fatiguing him yet..it's even better than fatiguing him and usually leads up to one..cuz he gets into a stunlock phase with each hit.
The delayed boot stamp, don't watch the boot..listen for the audio queue. He does a mini shout/roar right before it happens and it's much easier to time it like that than a visual queue.
PHASE 2
When he start flame spinning rotate left, clockwise, around him cuz that's the direction the flames come down and you'll have less to dodge through.
When he grapples to get away from you to fie, rush him rush him rush him. And get used to dodging his shots as if you're right on top of him. The idea is to get at least 1-2 swings on him..this will force him out of his firing phase. Otherwise if you keep your distance and dodge .. instead of having to dodge only 1-2 shots..you'll end up having to dodge 4-5-6-7-8 shots sometimes..it gets ridiculous.
Now having fire resistance is handy..but even just like 1 ring or 1 necklace with 150 fire resistance, is enough..just make sure you have some fire cleansing potions..Those are wayy more important than resistance IMO.
Whoever is reading,If you follow this and what OP says, you should have him down to phase 2 with maybe taking 1 hit at most..all your potions..then you just need to follow him when he grapples so he does less shots..and get good at dodging a few large slams..but even with missing those your potions should save you.
Whatever you do, don't let him go far and stay far..cuz he will give you hellfire
I edited a checklist I found for the base game bosses to make a checklist for as many of the bosses and boss-like enemies I know of in the DLC. Link here
Let me know if there's anyone I'm missing that I need to add or changes I need to make
Many of these "bosses" don't have boss healthbars at the bottom of the screen therefore they're not bosses. As a start I'd remove all the furnace golems as well as Needle Knight Leda
bros the quintessential redditor -
1.) replying with the “as a matter of fact..” comment ✅
2.) giving “advice” on how to be/do better ✅
& last but certainly not least: 3.) radiating small PP energy as they reread their replies, admiring their perfect spelling and punctuation while grinding their teeth and twirling their thin, greasy mustache ✅✅
Just not wanting misinformation to spread. If there's no boss health bar, it's not a boss, it's that simple. You don't need to insult my character if you don't like what I have to say. It makes you seem just as bad. But sure, it said "boss-like" so that's my bad. I just have a little pet peeve when people call things bosses when they aren't, like the Great Serpent from Sekiro which also isn't a boss. I know you probably also have irrational pet peeves about certain things as well, so think about that before judging me.
Funny how this response is more “quintessential redditor” than the comment you’re replying to🤦♂️
yeah thats why i included "boss-like" in there, i know a lot of people like to treat tougher enemies like that as bosses based on difficulty
"bosses and boss-like enemies"
Also you can just edit the document, what do you mean "As a start I'd remove..." lmfao
this is awesome, thank you op
thank you! this works great :)
ty bro
One boss missing : There's a skelly on boat at southern shore that summons the monstruous thing that dies in 2 heals
So I finished Elden Ring at level 150 after defeating every boss in the game and thought I'd be able to pick up the dlc and run through it no problem but I can't even get through the first boss. Like I'm struggling the same as I did when I played Elden Ring the first time. How are people making it easier on themselves besides just getting gud? Would love some advice.
Make sure you’re obtaining scadutree fragments so you can level up your scadutree blessing at sites of grace. It increases your damage dealt and decreases your damage taken so it’s essential for keeping up with the increased damage and hp of the dlc enemies.
Go get the Scadutree fragments. They are the DLC's power progression system, and the bosses are scaled to them. If you can't find any, you can look up a guide online.
It's worth mentioning that you can get scadutree lvl 14 without killing any bosses
You can beat the game at like 8-9 Scadu level.
Do some people do the DLC withour them? :o
You can't, you'd deal so little damage that even a field boss would take an hour to beat at max level
I started the DLC this week after creating a new character, which took me 80 hours just to get to it. First impressions are that this is practically Elden Ring II, and has some of the best areas and exploration that from have created.
The DLC has a unique levelling system for both summons and yourself. It's genious as it gives that constant progression feeling even with a high level character, and doesn't spoil the main game if you've not finished it.
Don't try attacking the giant flame golem unless you know what you're doing (I don't).
The first gaol optional mini boss in the start area is an arsehole. My build is a light blue dancer doll/dagger/buckler and he is a bitch for me.
Scadutree Fragments are your best friend. Welcome to the best DLC ever mate
When you say first boss are you talking about the knight or the obvious big boss with a cutscene (trying to not spoiler)
If it's the knight, you really have to focus on his attacks and decide if you play safe and punish the crossbow or go hard and get rekt from his sword over and over like me.
If it's the other, good luck, he's really hard or medium depending on build and weapon.
Hello people of Reddit, I fell in love with the FromSoft games when my friend introduced me to Dark Souls 3 when I was 18 (now 25) from that point on I played every other FromSoft release except for Sekiro. I typically don’t find any of the games hard, there are some bosses I struggle with but, I’d say I’ve never fought a boss more than 15-20 times. HOWEVER, the final boss of the shadow of the erdtree DLC is by far the most rage inducing I’ve ever encountered. For context… I’ve respecced my LVL 325 character over 10 times to find a sweet spot and nothing has worked.
I have played the DLC since release and I play a whopping 4-6 hours a day. Now here’s the best part, I finished EVERYTHING in the DLC the third day after release. Which means I have been fighting the final boss for nearly a month now for 4-6 hours a day. I’ve tried the popular shield cheese build with the antspur rapier and still it does not work for me. Now everyday when I get on to play Elden Ring I’m in an instant state of depression.
I’m on the verge of tears right now even writing this post because I’ve never felt so helpless with a FromSoft boss. I know for a fact I have fought the final boss AT LEAST 210 times because I had 210 rune arcs saved up from all my runs through the base game. I’ve seen a lot of people say they have given up on the final boss and “quit playing”. But I don’t want to cheat myself out of the experience of completing the game.
So my final point I’m trying to make is… what should I do? What can I do? If there are any recommendations for this boss fight that made it easier for anyone, please help me by giving me your advice.
UPDATE: I finally beat him, thank you all for the advice!!! Elden Ring is the greatest video game of all time.
I'm surprised the ol' Antspur Greatshield setup didn't work for you, that's what got me through my first playthrough of the DLC. Still, despite the stress this is causing you, I at least commend your tenacity in hanging on.
I'll run you through a few things off my head. I don't know what you've done so far, so sorry if some of these are repetition:
Have you messed with the Deflection Hardtear at all? It's nifty, and lets you perfect guard attacks in order to reduce stamina costs, chip damage, and retaliate with an improved guard counter if you attack. I started using it the moment I found it, and while it took me a long time to understand it, I eventually fell in love with it for block styles.
Resistances. Naturally, buffs reduce damage taken, but the Consort fight is so long that your buffs will run out. Still, I'm a big fan of Old Lord's talisman, making Lord's Divine Fortification last closer to 90 seconds. The catch is that there's almost no time to rebuff during this fight, I would rebuff just Lord's Divine during the phase transition, which usually meant I got smacked by the next attack, which was usually the big sky beams... but, you know, cut by 65% more than usual, and that's if I didn't avoid the attack completely with...
Vow of the Indomitable. I was running a fat roll build, so rolling was often a desperate last measure, and while it's true that fat rolls could still avoid the Bloodflame swings (that explosion happens from behind me, so can't be blocked -- in hindsight, I could have free-aimed to block it?), Vow had a longer immunity duration than fat rolls and recovered more quickly and kept me in place to retaliate with pokes. The other attack Vow works well on are the meteors; had no idea how to fat roll those and I'm not protected vs. magic, so they chipped too hard, but Vow avoids them all and gives a good attack window if I'm underneath. Raptor of the Mists is also one of my favorites for similar reasons, though for Consort, I didn't really want to be jumping up.
Rot Grease, including Drawstring, can also help to ensure a proc. I didn't use it because, well, my particular stat distribution involved a Flame Art Antspur, but that can work too. I did use Rot Grease at multiple points during the DLC, I just don't think I did it for Consort.
While my style was mostly focused on perfect guards and guard counters when I learned the safety windows to use them, I have to admit I resorted to good ol' stupid shield pokes when I had the stamina to spare.
Tried most of that besides the Old Lord talisman and the rot grease. The old lord talisman does sound like a great idea because I typically use Golden Vow and Flame and they run out by the halfway point of second phase. I feel like anytime I try to rot him it works really well for first phase and then rotting him for second phase I can NEVER proc it so I gave up on the rot builds.
Yeah, for bosses like Consort and Messmer, I ended up having to... 'abreviate' my buffs. Protection spells like Lord's Divine or Flame Protect Me get reapplied during phase transitions, Golden Vow and Blessing of the Erdtree do not. I'll bite a turtle neck once in awhile if for whatever crazy reason there's a lull in the fight, but the actual cast time of buffs is relevant to me (still, I'm not going to waste time sprinting towards a boss who's about to jump in anyways).
Rot does work, but it demands a good bit of commitment. I stuck with it when it wasn't proccing because I had to know whether he was simply immune to rot during second phase or whether I just wasn't hitting often enough to proc it, and when I realized it could proc, I did everything I could to try to get little shield pokes in just so the meter would stay up -- on one attempt, it just worked, I was aggressive enough, got a knockdown through guard counters, the rot stuck, and I was able to get 'em down in a couple attempts after that. I suppose you could try backup rot pots, but that's usually my turtle neck/boiled crab time, and long windows are Lord's Divine rebuff windows.
I know how you feel. The final boss took me 187 attempts, more than all the other major bosses in the DLC combined. It was really discouraging and I couldn’t understand what was wrong with me. I finally got him with a bleed build. I didn’t even feel good about it when it was over, just relieved.
There are way more qualified people on here that can give you advice. I just wanted to say that I know what you’re feeling. Just hang in there.
Most options of fighting are available for all builds, so you can find a combination of them to use
Damage buffs
Low requirement Defense buff / food
Parry
Deflecting Crystal Tear
Blocking (even just a medium shield for one hit)
Counter
There are people who did it by face tanking (no shield, no roll) in NG+7, while that's a little extreme, half of that preparation can surely make dodging / parrying / deflecting lot easier
I’ve tried all of those besides parrying, I’ve never been very consistent with parrying. Only boss I’ve ever been able to parry with ease was Pontiff Sullivan from DS3. That’s because his swings are so heavily telegraphed. Radahn in his second phase it is a NIGHTMARE trying to see his swords with all of Miquellas hair in the way. Little dude needs a pony tail or something.
I’ve tried all of those besides parrying
Don't take this as offense, but no, you haven't
https://youtu.be/ULhI_OcUpDw?feature=shared
The weapon is not required, just use whatever does good Damage with your build against the boss
With a great shield / spirit ash, it can be easier / requires fewer buffs
You should try parrying, it will at least be something different to play with, but if it works you shut down many long combos while getting a free hit with each parry.
Also just take a break.
Somebody get miquella a scrunchie please!
For the attempt that worked for me, I used mimic and backhand blades not really optimal at all but it worked for me.
I'm a bit surprised you're struggling both being high level and also trying the shield and spear strat, but sometimes bosses really just make you struggle while others breeze through.
A really nice ash of war, and the one I used was raptors of the mist. For the big holy attack he does at the start of the 2nd phase, you can run right up to him and do the AOW to dodge the attack while also getting a hit in. Can give that a go and see if that helps dodge that attack.
100% real, even for how hard people said Malenia was I beat her pretty swiftly because she has flaws (easily staggered and low poise, weak to bleed) I just feel like with Radahn he has no flaws.
You made it to the second phase?
Source: Dark Tark on YouTube
Radahn in C tier? This is why he's the goat of soulsborne creators
most of them…nothing? bayle really stands out as far as spectacle—pretty much one of the most epic dragon fights in the catalogue. messemer is also a really impressive and well choreographed fight. mechanically he stands out.
prime consort stands out in difficulty, but really besides the sheer brutality he doesn’t impress.
everything else i found to be pretty par for the course for Fromsoft.
I think Rennala is a step mechanically, especially as far as the dodge/hit system is concerned
Healing in neutral has been a bad idea in every Fromsoft game. Its just an even more bad idea in Elden Ring
Don't heal in neutral
i mean if you compare them to ds2 bosses then sure. but coming from ds3 or sekiro into SotE, the majority of dlc bosses are about as spectacular as the general boss experience.
In terms of presentation / cinematics I would say that a lot of the dlc bosses are actually worse than DS and base game bosses. The only dlc bosses that I think had good presentation are divine dancing lion, Messmer, Bayle, Midra, and scadutree avatar. The rest either have bad presentation (for most of their fights) or didn’t have enough cinematics. Like half the time I just didn’t feel like I was fighting anyone important when going through the dlc.
I fought him the other day and was in awe of how complex and nuanced the fight is. Every phase is like a dance.
Best bossfight of all time idc
Attacking you right after you cross the fog gate?
Most of their boss presentations are awesome. I don’t think Midra is necessarily any more awesome than Godfrey, Malenia, Maliketh, Nameless King, Orphan of Kos, etc.
Personally, I don’t care much about presentation. I’d rather fight a stick figure with Isshin’s moveset than MidPlaciBayle
I mean compared to the base game, a lot of bosses left a lot to be desired, especially Romina, Rellana and Gaius
Midra is the Goat of the DLC. I'm really hoping another Frenzied Lord appears in Nightrein.
Honestly, I’m not great at these games and I had no trouble healing against any boss. It’s not nearly as hard as people make it out to be. Either wait for an opening or roll the dice.
Where can I find bosses too.
Uhm...
I don't wanna spoil too much but have you explored Caelid yet? There's one big guy there. It's to the east of Limgrave...
There is also a way (technically 2 ways) to go north of Liurnia. Just explore and you'll find out.
It's ok I don't really care about spoilers, but thanks anyways👍
Since you said you don’t care about spoiler here you are.
After rennala you need 2 medallion pieces (google it) to get to altis plateau through dectus lift, where you fight a tougher version of the sentinel knight and then go into the city until you fight Margit again, then you go to the snowy place and fight the fire giant, then you get teleported to Darin azul and fight maliketh, then you get sent back to the city and you have a few bosses in front of you, all basically back to back and then you’re at the end of the game.
Theres also a few optional bosses, I recommend going to volcano manor which is in the northern side of Altus plateau. You get an amazing boss weapon from Rykard.
Feel free to ask if you have any questions
What level should I be for those, because right now I'm level 67
Most north-western point in Liurnia is the Manor. Side content.
North, north-east leads to Altus, but you'll need 2 of the elevator coin halves to enter (or go through a cave found at the end of the valley in the most northern part of Liurnia)
Yeah I already have Atlus unlocked, my bad. I probably should've said that
So I beat the final boss and I was messing around in the area were you can finish the game. And I was just reading the messages and I accidentally clicked on Rannis’ summoning sign and I didn’t decide what ending I wanted and it put me into the cut scene so I freaked out and closed my game thinking it would load me right before the check point. But when I loaded up the game I spawn at the round table and I can’t access the final area anymore. I tried walking into the fog wall from the elden throne and it doesn’t give me the option to enter either. I’ve tried dieing, invading, reborning my attributes. And I can’t figure it out. Asking for help.
You essentially just skipped the final cutscene. You should be able to just go into ng+ now at the round table (the game gives you the option after the cutscene).
When you start new game+ Do you get to keep your items and gear like in other dark souls games?
Yep, outside of some key items you keep everything like all previous titles.
THANK YOU! I’ll just watch the cut scenes on YouTube!
You already finished the game
If you rest at roundtable hold there should be an option to start journey 2
Yeah don't close the game randomly next time
Don’t feel bad. Just did the same exact thing. All of that just to watch the endings on YouTube….bad design on From’s part. I guess I missed the dialogue that tells you you don’t get to go into the room again if U miss the grace.
