TL;DR Yoga and specific breathing exercises are commonly recommended for reducing bloating. They help stimulate digestion, relieve gas, and manage stress which can contribute to digestive issues.
Yoga Poses and Techniques
Yoga is frequently mentioned as an effective way to alleviate bloating. Specific poses like the cat/cow stretch, child's pose, downward dog, and the "wind relieving pose" are highlighted for their ability to promote digestion and relieve gas [1:3]
[4:6]. These movements help by gently massaging the internal organs and encouraging the movement of gas through the intestines
[4:4].
Breathing Exercises
Deep diaphragmatic breathing is another technique that can aid in reducing bloating. One method involves deep inhalation followed by a humming exhale, which can stimulate the vagus nerve and encourage digestive movement [1:2]. Another exercise is the "empire stretch," where you suck your belly in and out while holding your breath, believed to activate the migrating motor complex (MMC) which helps move contents through the digestive tract
[1:1].
Stretching and Movement
General stretching and light exercises such as walking are also beneficial. Regular stretching routines, especially those incorporating yoga elements, help maintain flexibility and can relieve tension that might contribute to bloating [3:5]. Walking is a simple activity that aids digestion and can be particularly helpful after meals
[3:3].
Stress Management
Stress is a known contributor to digestive issues, including bloating. Yoga not only provides physical benefits but also helps with mental relaxation, potentially reducing stress-related digestive problems [4:2]
[4:3]. Consistent practice can improve overall gut health by managing stress levels
[4:1].
Additional Tips
Some users have found relief from bloating through lifestyle changes such as drinking more water, avoiding certain foods, or using probiotics [3:2]
[3:4]
[3:6]. Additionally, ginger-turmeric tea is suggested as a natural remedy for its anti-inflammatory properties
[5:2].
While I know chronic fatigue and brain fog can get in the way of this I was wondering if theres any yoga or exercise that you guys have tried that can help with digestion and bloating?
Deep diaphragmatic breathing with humming on the exhale works great for me. Five minutes of it and my stomach starts moving. I usually do it after eating dinner and it reduces bloating.
Find a comfy spot (I lay on my bed with all the lights off and calming music), lay on your back with arms at your sides. Take a deep breath in, first half breathing in with your diaphragm, second half with your chest. Then hum while you slowly exhale. Any pitch is fine. I like finding one where I can feel the vibrations into my stomach.
If you have trouble isolating your diaphragm, put one hand on your bellybutton and one on your sternum and focus on breathing with your belly hand first.
I second the yoga. Cat/cow stretch, child's pose and downward dog coupled with diaphragm breathing are good.
Might sound silly, but singing. It's not exercise in the traditional sense, but it stimulates the vagus nerve, teaches breath control, and for many people, releases endorphins.
Yogic exercise I swear by to encourage the mmc to move (to hopefully decrease the bloating): bend over a little bit, so your forearms are on your thighs (think empire stance, like in baseball, bc this is called the empire stretch!) deep breath in then deep breath out, pump/suck your belly in and out while holding your breath for as long as you can. I usually do it for 8 seconds. Deep breath in, deep breath out then repeat the exercise. It should be generally difficult holding your breath and doing the exercise at the same time.
The mmc is a collection of movements in the gut, in a weird way I think if you can get your belly moving on the outside, it may encourage things to move along on the inside🤷🏻‍♀️ my yoga teacher also says twists are good for digestion.

I do the Primal Squat three times every day for at least five minutes.
in my case i think it's has been, working out on a mini trampoline. Has someone experienced the same on a rebounder? and in general, how do you deal with water retention.
one of my favorite natural recipes are the ones that use celery, or just plain celery juice. But organic celery juice is getting expensier every month, thanks for sharing your tips in advance.
And of course in my case, sweating a lot would help maintain the bloatedness away, but some weeks are just too cold that i cant even sweat one drop.
The only thing that's helped me is drinking more water. I usually drink between 2-4 Liters a day. If I'm extra bloated some days, I will drink between 4-5, especially when sweating a lot, and I eat less food in general. I see some people say less carbs, and they're probably right.
(Everyone needs different amounts of water. I'm 5'7 140lbs for reference)
For me, walking and lots of stretching. I also drink a ton of water which helps immensely.
stretching for how long?
Every morning and evening, I do standing and floor stretches for at least 10 minutes. On days I walk a lot I will stretch for 30 minutes by also incorporating yoga.
As someone with stomach problems, the best way for me is to avoid certain foods. If something gets to me anyway, then about all I can manage to do is walk and maybe some stretches as it’s too painful to do anything else.
Seconding avoiding certain foods for stomach problems. Also a good probiotic has helped a lot.
wich probiotic do you use?
I had the Kyleena for about 8 months and just switched to the generic for Yaz because I was having skin issues as well. I responded to another comment as well but I think my body does a bit better with a combo BC that has high estrogen. I was on Lo Loestrin for awhile before the IUD and had the same bloating issue. I switched to Ortho Tri Cyclen (maybe the generic? I don't remember) for a month or two while waiting for the IUD and noticed I was SIGNIFICANTLY less bloated. Got the IUD inserted and didn't notice any immediate changes but after a few months of always looking like I was 3 months pregnant I decided to finally get it out. I haven't been on my new pill long enough to see how it will affect me in the long run but I'm already a lot less bloated.
Not an exercise but switching birth controls. I'm down 6-7 lbs in 3 weeks of previously stubborn water weight that pretty much melted off after getting my IUD out.
Otherwise, I don't think exercise will help with bloating. Bloating is likely an inside-your-body issue and could be caused by food sensitivity.
Interesting! Which IUD do you have? I have the mirena and now wondering if getting rid of it would help with some problems.
Honestly going vegan helped me a ton
That's interesting. I went vegan in June and haven't noticed much difference. If anything, I may be a little more bloated than I used to be. All those beans, I guess!
Does it?
I suffer with severe bloating, I don’t believe yogas a cure or anything but noticed I look less bloated after an hour yoga class. I digest slow. Do the movements help everything move around or something or was this cooincidental?
Just curious
I have IBS and started doing yoga specifically to help with it. Some poses, including twists definitely help keep everything moving and working properly. I also find that my stomach issues are worse if I'm stressed and yoga helps my gut health by helping my mental health, you might be benefitting from that as well.
I’ve been super stressed this past week and my insides have been so messed up. The stress has also prevented me from keeping my normal yoga practice and it’s only making it worse.
This is totally my case 👍
For me it fixed a lot of things that were related with stress. Could be your digestion issues were coming from constant tension and stress?
When a baby has gas, one technique is to lay them on their back, and gently hold their feet, and move them like a bicycle kick motion. Maybe you're doing some of the same to release gas in yoga?
well, lying on the back and hugging the knees into the chest is literally called "wind relieving pose"
I personally think yoga helps with everything lol
This 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻💞
My digestion is much better when I’m doing yoga consistently. It helps relieve gas and keeps things moving.
lmao
I feel like lately I’ve been having extremely uncomfortable bloating no matter what I eat or how much I use the bathroom. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for how to reduce bloating?
Ginger-tumeric tea is an affordable option.

It's like one of my only symptoms and it's persistent. It gets worse after I eat or drink anything, but it's always bloated. I had one morning about 2 weeks ago where I woke up with no bloating and that was the first time in years that I wasn't bloated (I wish I knew what contributed to the lack of bloating that day).
I literally have some pants in two different sizes because my bloating can get so bad that I wear one size in the day and need the next size up by the night. It's ridiculous.
Bloating can have several underlying causes, so it is always worth considering what works for you. Here are some evidence-based remedies that help:
Now if you want some immediate relief, then try some gentle abdonminal massages in a clockwise motion. Another thing worth trying is yoga that includes poses such as child's pose and wind-relieving pose.
That said, if you're dealing with chronic bloating then a personalized quiz is something very worth looking into. Whether you're suffering from food intolreances and SIBO or other GI conditions, taking a personalized quiz that looks deeply into your symptoms relating to gas, gerd, acid reflux, bloating, etc. is an incredibly fast and affordable option compared to going to a pharmacy to get a treatment that might not even work.
Another thing is to keep a food diary so that you know clearly what may be causing your bloating. But obviously, it's hard to know what food it may be since you're consuming a variety of different foods everyday.
MANAGE STRESS LEVELS
The stress factor in bloating is something a lot of people overlook. It triggers your fight or flight response which then diverts blood flow AWAY from digestion and slows down your gut mobility which leads to the build up of gas and that uncomfortable bloated feeling.
If you're only bloated at night, then it may be due to the stomach digestion slowing down at night. You can kind of think of this like traffic on a highway. This may be due to the time you consume your meals and because stress and hormone levels peak in the evening.
This is some solid advice! I will definitely take Claisen as a solution. Their personalized feature sounds super useful. What is the return policy like at Claisen?
Ive recently upped the intensity of my workouts, lifting 4x a week and jogging 3x a week, and Ive noticed this new "problem".
If I have a particularly intense workout, like very sweaty, high heart rate, I will be bloated afterwards. Im talking like 5 months pregnant bloated.
I track my water intake and I will only consume a 16oz bottle of water over the course of an hour long workout. I dont drink it all at once or anything.
I eat pretty clean and I dont have any particular food sensitivities...
Anyone else have this or have any tips to keep it from happening?
Yep it's cortisol reaction. I get it after super tough Crossfit WODs or max lifts. Also worse if I don't eat something within an hour after training - usually if I eat soon after finishing the bloating is a little better.
Do you know how to help alleviate or prevent the bloating post workout?
I know this was so long ago but how long does it take to go away? I recently started getting very bloated after working out.
Meeeee. It’s so annoying. I truly believe it’s a metabolic issue. I’m 10x more bloated if I work out on a fasted state.
No long term solution, but electrolytes help somewhat.
Did u figure out the cause of bloating?
The cause…I think just part of a messed up digestive system. But I found significant help and reduction in the bloating with digestive enzymes and prebiotic fiber!
My belly is not bloated but my legs have been inflamed and retaining water since I started upping my running volume (have been at around 30-35 mpw, now pushing 40-45 mpw) and doing longer long runs (12-18 miles).
FYI, your water comment makes me think you might be refraining from drinking water in case you're retaining water - in fact you want to drink MORE water to flush your body out and so that it doesn't hold onto the water it does have access to.
Thanks for your comment! I drink 150oz a water a day minimum to stay hydrated. I started tracking and upping the intake a couple monthes ago. I had read before that drinking large amounts of water during a workout can cause bloating so I just wanted to clarify that I dont.
Gotcha! I drink a ton of water too and it sometimes feels counter intuitive to keep drinking it when I feel bloated.
The weird and wonderful human body, amirite?
If I exercise too intensely, I start getting period cramps because exercise can stimulate prostaglandins. Which is fun.
I've been trying to google this because I get cramps that are exactly like period cramps if I run for more than about 15 minutes. Have you found any solutions?
Ohhhh so that’s why my cramps get worse when I’m working out with cramps. The advice of exercising reducing cramps in the moment does NOT work for me.
Try the bicycle crunch dear it ll give u a toned abs
I dont want toned abs , i like to get 11 line shaped belly it look more sexy
Wow!
Im.a college student 21 M, Im skinny but have issues of bloating. What can i do .I have both outside and homely food, drink 2 to 3 chai...since few months outside food aan main. Change my diet or anyother methods?. Dieticians or any people with knowledge in the area do help me.
Unpopular opinion- drinking water fast can cause bloating in some people. Please check if you gulp down water fast..if so, try drinking water from a cup sip by sip...also tea/coffee can cause bloating. Outside food too. Sometimes when I have chinese food from outside I can feel my stomach bloated for 3-4 days
totally agree with bloating caused by chugging water faaast. happens to me all the time but i can’t help myself by not drinking like that.
Chai means with milk right? Majority of South Indians are lactose intolerant. Try avoiding it and check. (Usually 2-3 chai wont make such a big trouble) Even after avoiding milk and its products for 3 days , if you are still having bloating.Let me know.
Check if you have lactose intolerance.
i second this
Try to cut down sugar, cut down salty food too. Lower intake of fast food. Eat 2 hrs before sleeping. Try to drink green tea instead of normal chaya
I understand your problem .
There are many ways to solve it . Increase chewing of food slowly while eating prevent fast eating . Eat more fiber and reduce intake of alternate form of carbs like lactose . Replace the coffee or tea intake to green tea . Increase food supplements like almonds cashews to your diet . Drink more water and eat food 4-5 times instead of 3 heavy meals .Seperate short meals .
exercises to reduce bloating
Key Considerations for Exercises to Reduce Bloating
Gentle Movement: Start with low-impact exercises that promote digestion and reduce bloating, such as walking or yoga. These activities help stimulate the digestive system.
Core Strengthening: Engage in core-strengthening exercises like planks and pelvic tilts. A strong core can help support digestion and reduce abdominal discomfort.
Stretching: Incorporate stretches that target the abdominal area, such as the cat-cow stretch or seated forward bend. These can help relieve tension and promote gas release.
Breathing Exercises: Deep breathing techniques can help relax the diaphragm and abdominal muscles, aiding in digestion and reducing bloating.
Hydration: While not an exercise, staying hydrated is crucial. Drinking water before and after workouts can help flush out excess sodium and reduce bloating.
Recommended Exercises:
Takeaway: Combining gentle movement with specific stretches and core exercises can effectively help reduce bloating. Always listen to your body and consult a healthcare professional if bloating persists or is accompanied by severe discomfort.
