How to Avoid Bloating

Dietary Adjustments

One of the most effective ways to address bloating is through dietary changes. Many users have found relief by following a low-FODMAP diet, which involves reducing intake of certain carbohydrates that can cause digestive issues [3:1], [5:5]. Eliminating gluten has also been suggested as gluten can cause inflammation and bloating for some individuals [5:2]. Additionally, avoiding high-fiber foods, cruciferous vegetables, and fortified grains may help reduce bloating [4:1], [4:4], [5:3].

Beverage Consumption

The way you consume liquids can impact bloating. Some users recommend waiting at least 30 minutes after drinking before eating, and not drinking while eating [2:3]. Cutting down on coffee and caffeinated beverages has helped others reduce bloating [2:1], [2:5]. Drinking more water and reducing sodium intake can also be beneficial [3:3].

Lifestyle Modifications

Incorporating certain lifestyle changes can aid in managing bloating. Regular movement and exercise are important as they can improve digestion [1:2], [3:4]. Practices like dry fasting, where you refrain from eating and drinking for specific periods, have been mentioned as helpful, although this approach might not be suitable for everyone [1:7], [1:8]. Manual abdominal massage and acupuncture have been reported to alleviate bloating symptoms [4:1], [5:6].

Probiotics and Anti-inflammatory Remedies

Probiotics can support gut health and potentially reduce bloating by balancing gut bacteria [3:1], [3:4]. Anti-inflammatory teas, such as those made with ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon, have been recommended for their soothing effects [1:8], [3:2].

Tracking and Elimination Diets

To identify specific triggers of bloating, tracking your food intake and observing patterns can be useful [3:4]. An elimination diet, where you systematically remove and reintroduce foods, can help pinpoint problematic ingredients [1:6]. Consulting a healthcare professional for personalized advice, such as an autoimmune protocol diet, can also be beneficial [5:1], [5:10].

Someone pls help 💀 I didn’t even eat that much in volume but this happens every single time I eat and I literally look pregnant. Typically in this case I would have quite a lot of gas even if what I ate was low FODMAP.

Anyone have any tips on bloating? Is this normal? I have tried drinking ACV, peppermint tea, exercises, castor oil pouches, probiotics to try to debloat and so called fix my gut microbiome but somehow this still happens.

What helped me is an anti inflammatory tea. The ingredients are: ½ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp ginger, ½ tsp cinnamon and a pinch of black pepper to a glass hot water. I drink this 1-2 times a day.

What also helped me was changing my diet. It's important to eat a variety of foods to get different nutrients.

And dry fasting did my body wonders. I would fast the whole day and eat and drink between 5pm-9pm.

Did all this reduce your bloating ?

Whats dry fasting ?

1 upvotes on reddit
TruthLonely · 7 months ago

Dry fasting is not eating nor drinking for some hours.

And yes, I've been eating pretty clean for some months and started to feel bloated even if I hadn't had junk food nor any foods I'm allergic to. When I started to eat a little differently, dry fast, and the drink the anti inflammatory tea, the bloating has reduced quite greatly.

Make sure to move as well.

is water allowed outside of the 5-9pm? I don’t think I will be able to survive the whole day without water 🥲

TruthLonely · 7 months ago

Without water. You could give it a try. You're allowing your gut to heal by giving it a break.

I've been doing that weekly with no issue. I've also read that to have a healthy gut, it's recommended to fast at least twice a week, eating about 600kcal.

Try strict elimination diet first to see if anything you're eating/drinking specifically is causing it. If you're getting alot of gas, that's a pretty clear indicator that your gut isn't digesting properly and food is fermenting too long and/or an imbalance of bad gut bacteria producing too much gas. Need to get to the root cause.

Ease of bloating

I’m one of those people you see drinking 3 cups of coffee to start my day, an energy drink before my workout and another cup or two before bed. I love the stuff. I’m also always severely bloated.

I’ve kind of made the link lately that the more coffee I drink, the more bloated I get. So far today I’ve had 2 cups of coffee and a lactose free yogurt, and I’m already so bloated it’s almost painful. Thinking of quitting or at least cutting down to try and somehow fix this. Any advice? Did anyone have the same problem?

What really helped me:

  • Wait a minimum of 30 minutes after drinking anything, caffeinated or not, before you eat.

  • Don’t drink while eating.

  • Wait a minimum of 1.5 hours before having any other drink. Preferably wait over 2 hours.

Basically allowing my stomach to either deal with food or liquid, but not both at the same time.

I would suggest you track what you eat for a while to see if it’s dependent on a specific ingredient, such as dairy for example. You could also look at your activity level here, your digestion is dependent on your movement. Bedridden people often have constipation for example and runners can get diarrhea. You could also look into taking some probiotics to support your gut microbiota, because their composition is also highly affected by lifestyle and it’s possible it got thrown off a little.

For me, two things really helped with the severe bloating I used to experience: (1) following a low-FODMAP diet; (2) probiotics. But it does depend on what the cause of the bloating you’re experiencing is - like someone else posted, it would be good to monitor / track what you eat and see if you observe any discernible patterns between that and your bloating episodes.

I also tend to bloat a lot more just before my period is due.

I’m finding bread leaves me very bloated. I’m not sure if it’s the gluten or what is causing it. I can eat a low carb wrap just fine but if I eat a sandwich on fresh bread like sourdough or Italian bread I get so bloated my pants don’t fit anymore. I LOVE fresh baked bread so this is making me sad.

What have you found to be helpful with bloating?

Posted by Marino4K · in r/Biohackers · 5 months ago

I’m a pretty in shape individual by all accounts and most days, I look fairly lean, not abs lean but clearly in shape, wide shoulders, it’s not insane by any stretch but I’m happy and comfortable with my physique.

However some days randomly, I look like I just chugged twenty beers and like I’m three months pregnant (I’m a guy). I know that’s somewhat normal but I’m just trying to optimize further I suppose, in my eyes, there’s such a stark difference some days between me looking like I’m very in shape lean wise and wow have another beer fatass

The only things I can think of to try is to minimize carbonated drinks, add more probiotics, and increase water intake, is there anything else I can try? Sleep is pretty dialed in, I don’t drink much alcohol, maybe once every 2-3 weeks.

Thanks.

Stop eating fortified grains (they have added folic acid , but not methylated) because most people have a gene mutation that doesn’t allow them to methylate them properly.

A deal with your stress effectively because cortisol bloat is so real.

Organic grains only because the non-organic is sprayed with pesticides that make the bug’s stomach explode. It does that to us on a very small scale, makes it balloon out

I did acupuncture for fibroids I’m 2020, about 4 sessions in, I got depressed, life happens, xyz and stopped going. The session were 2 hrs, did include a hot stone, deep massage and a red light or infrared?? pointed on my abdomen with the needles.

About 2-3 months later I realized that I didn’t bloat like I used to; my bloating was so bad I would eat only one thing during potlucks otherwise I would drive home with my driver seat reclined. Fast forward, I’m talking to a GI doctor at a party and I tell them my experience and they confirmed acupuncture does help but they can’t recommend cos of healthcare politics. I’ve been fine since except when I eat seed oils.

It's like one of my only symptoms and it's persistent. It gets worse after I eat or drink anything, but it's always bloated. I had one morning about 2 weeks ago where I woke up with no bloating and that was the first time in years that I wasn't bloated (I wish I knew what contributed to the lack of bloating that day).

I literally have some pants in two different sizes because my bloating can get so bad that I wear one size in the day and need the next size up by the night. It's ridiculous.

Hey guys. Does anybody else really struggle with bloating? I feel like no matter what I eat some days I will wake up with such a swollen tummy that doesn’t go away when I poop or do certain yoga positions to help alleviate the discomfort. I always try and stick to a low fibre diet too which is the most annoying part. It’s getting to me a lot lately because I’m quite fit and like to go to the gym regularly, but lately I just feel like my tummy looks like it sticks out in everything I wear and I know for a fact that it’s not weight gain. HELP ! How do you deal with chronic bloating/constipation ? And anyone feeling "stressed" in the stomach ?

Posted by abigfrozenturtle · in r/FODMAPS · 6 months ago

Hi ! I'm 22F and I'm honestly starting to want to give up...I've been dealing with being constantly bloated (for as long as I can remember). Honestly, being bloated is a part of my normal life, I wake up bloated, I go to bed bloated etcc... Honestly sometimes just drinking water will make me SO bloated !

I also feel like my bowel movement is SO irregular !! I'm either constipated or I have diarrhea. It's rare for me to have a normal "stool cycle" lol (sorry english is not my first language).

I do suspect I have IBS, because the only time in my life when I remember not being bloated was a time when I wasn't stressed at all day to day. But usually, I also wake up feeling "stressed" in my stomach (I don't know if this is the best to describe it, I dont feel mentally stressed but there is this tension in my stomach ? Idk it is weird). I don't know if this is really linked, or if anyone else has experienced this...

Honestly, dealing with this has been so annoying. Currently, I'm bloated and constipated, and as I only take stronger medication as a last resort , I was wondering if any of you guys had tips and tricks on how to get back to normal !

(When I get out of a constipated cycle usually by stomach goes back to normal until I eat something that triggers it, usually it can be when I eat something too fat or sweet but it can be really a lot of random things)

I'm also wondering if my bloating could be linked to my lifestyle ? Like my sleep or eating schedule, or my pelvic health or anything really...

More info about me : I'm lactose intolerant, but i do eat dairy that is low in lactose like kefir, cheese and greek yogourt. I'm drinking tea/ herbal infusion basically all the time. I'm a pescatarian, and I eat a lot of fruit vegetable. I also eat fermented food like miso, kimchi, kefir and kombucha lowkey everyday. I'm not the most active person, but I walk a lot and go bouldering at least once a week. I tend to eat pretty healthy, I don't eat that much processed food. Usually i sleep 8h every night.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this! I deeply relate, and I know how discouraging it can be.

I would definitely recommend talking to your doctor if you have that option. That being said, just a few thoughts on what you listed...

  • Have you tried abdominal massage? I use that technique when I'm feeling particularly bloated and gassy, and it truly does help to relieve the pain and get things moving.

  • You mentioned you drink tea every day. Have you tried taking a break from that? I doubt it's the main issue, but personally, tea doesn't sit well with me, and I know some teas are high in FODMAPs!

  • You also mentioned drinking kombucha frequently. Fermented foods are typically good for your gut, but kombucha is tea (which as listed about, can cause issues) AND usually has a lot of sugar. I dearly love it, but I end up with a stomachache every single time I drink it.

Unfortunately I don't have any quick answers, but hopefully that gives you a few ideas of things to try?!

abigfrozenturtle · OP · 6 months ago

Thank you ! I'll keep that in mind ! However, this week I have only been drinking infusions ( licorice root, lichen, mint ) and I'm still bloated ! Also, usually on a rare occasion when I'm not, I drink green tea and it doesn't seem to affect me. So tea doesn't seem to be the culprit ? But I'll try to keep track of it more carefully ! I'll also look up some massages, I've tried it myself but haven't looked for any actual techniques ! Anyways, thank you so much for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it !

I am exactly in your situation and it’s annoying..I feel your struggles girl.i have methane sibo with IBS so I think you have something similar…confirm with a GIT specialist though These tips might help you for the time being

  1. Avoid consumption of fermented foods, even though they are good for our gut microbiome, they could worsen your situation if you have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth(SIBO) since these foods contain both pre&probiotics..prebiotics feed the bad intestinal bacteria and the bloating worsens. These foods are also high in histamines which could worsen your gut inflammation 2.avoid drinking too much herbal teas..some of them are high in FODMAPS….use the Monash university app to know which foods are high or low in FODMAPS 3.engage in meditation and practice mindfulness…this is not mentioned as much but it makes soo much difference in managing stress and anxiety, which intern helps your gut health and chronic constipation as well 4.go into low FODMAP and low lactin diet to starve the bad bacteria and rebuild the healthy microbiome of your gut plus relieve chronic constipation…you can start this by watching Dr rajsree and Bella lindemann’s videos to learn more about these conditions and the diet protocols 5.also inquire about your female reproductive health..some conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids etc can be a cause or trigger of these gut issues

Most people on this subreddit deal with chronic bloating/constipation by following a low-FODMAP diet. The subreddit pinned post has great explanations and resources on where to start. Note that many of the foods you mention that you currently eat are high in FODMAPs and will have to be eliminated or reduced to small portions.

What helps me with the bloating is

  • peppermint tea
  • ginger tea (not just the little sachet, but actually boiling 300gr of fresh ginger in 500ml water and drinking it)
  • gentle exercise (yoga for pcos on youtube)
  • not eating tropical fruit (mango, pineapple etc)
  • not eating fried stuff, alcohol, lactose (this is something you will have to trial-error test yourself bc every body is different)

Really really get into researching chinese medicine digestion tips.

You got this sweetheart🌺🌺

Oh and gentle gentle clockwise massages on your belly are nice. You can google how to do them.

Ooh I’ve not heard about the tropical fruit thing. I eat pineapple almost every day and have a horrific bloat. I’m going to give that a rest for a while and see if it stops me feeling like my abdomen is about to burst 😭

The reasoning behind this is that tropical fruit (mango, papaya.. you name it) comes from a hot climate and is therefore of cooling nature (just as summer fruits eaten out of season) TCM distinguishes between hot and cold foods, and endo is seen as a disease caused by, among other things, cold( this is a very broad oversimplification and rough translation to western concepts) Drinking hot water/tea and never drinking cold beverages is also advised. Hope this helps

Been thinking a lil more and I forgot to mention:

  • idk your spice tolerance, but the ginger must be boiled at least 15 minutes
  • try spacing out your food (give your body at least 4-5 hours between meals to actually do it's job😅 if you eat again you interrupt the digestion work
  • oh, overexercising can also bloat! Look up "post workout bloat"

Pls keep me posted on how conference goes!! You deserve to enjoy your dayyy with a tummy so healthy you are shoookethhh💅🏼

Ginger pills are also a thing and can really help! I also use baby oil and do the I Love U massage on my stomach, slowly and gently. Avoid carbonated bevs, and all the things listed in the other comments haha. Anti inflammatory ingredients help, slow and intentional walks can help too

How to avoid bloating

Key Considerations to Avoid Bloating

  1. Dietary Choices:

    • Limit Gas-Producing Foods: Reduce intake of beans, lentils, broccoli, onions, and carbonated drinks.
    • Watch Fiber Intake: Gradually increase fiber in your diet to prevent digestive discomfort.
    • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help digestion and prevent constipation.
  2. Eating Habits:

    • Eat Slowly: Take your time while eating to avoid swallowing air, which can lead to bloating.
    • Smaller Meals: Opt for smaller, more frequent meals rather than large ones to ease digestion.
  3. Identify Food Intolerances:

    • Keep a Food Diary: Track what you eat and any bloating symptoms to identify potential food intolerances (e.g., lactose, gluten).
  4. Physical Activity:

    • Regular Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity to promote digestion and reduce bloating. Even a short walk can help.
  5. Manage Stress:

    • Relaxation Techniques: Practice stress-reducing techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing, as stress can impact digestion.

Recommendation: If bloating persists despite these changes, consider consulting a healthcare professional. They can help identify underlying issues such as IBS or food intolerances and provide tailored advice.
