What Redditors are Saying

Games Similar to Hogwarts Legacy

TL;DR If you enjoyed "Hogwarts Legacy," consider trying "Dragon Age: Inquisition," "Assassin's Creed" series, "The Witcher 3," and "Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." These games offer rich narratives, exploration, and magical elements similar to those found in Hogwarts Legacy.

Dragon Age Series

The "Dragon Age" series, particularly "Dragon Age: Inquisition," is frequently recommended for fans of Hogwarts Legacy. The game offers a strong narrative, exploration, and magic-themed gameplay that resonates with players looking for a similar experience [2:2], [3:1]. It features an open world with numerous quests and character development opportunities, making it a great choice for those who enjoyed the RPG elements of Hogwarts Legacy [3:5].

Assassin's Creed Series

Several entries in the "Assassin's Creed" series, such as "Origins," "Odyssey," and "Valhalla," are suggested due to their expansive worlds, engaging stories, and exploration aspects [2:1], [3:4]. These games provide a historical backdrop with a mix of action and adventure, offering a different yet familiar feel for Hogwarts Legacy fans [5:1].

The Witcher 3 and Skyrim

"The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" and "Skyrim" are classic RPGs known for their deep storylines, immersive worlds, and magical elements. While they can be overwhelming for some players, playing on easier modes can make them more accessible [2:1], [5:3]. Both games allow players to explore vast landscapes and engage in combat using magic, providing a wizard-like experience similar to Hogwarts Legacy.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

For those seeking a beginner-friendly open-world game, "Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" is highly recommended. Its open-world design, exploration, and puzzle-solving elements align well with what many players loved about Hogwarts Legacy [4:5], [5:7]. Although it may not have the same structured quest system, its freedom and creativity make it a compelling choice.

Other Recommendations

Games like "Lego Harry Potter" offer a lighter, more casual gaming experience while still capturing the magical essence of the Harry Potter universe [1:5], [5:2]. Additionally, titles like "Horizon: Zero Dawn" and "Ghost of Tsushima" are noted for their storytelling and open-world exploration, appealing to players who appreciate these aspects in Hogwarts Legacy [5:4], [5:10].

ORIGINAL POST

I've played the Gameboy games and rented the Gamecube ones back in the day, but those are either jrpgs or puzzle games with some spells.

Are there any more living life at Hogwarts type games, text base life sim, Stardew Valley type, going to class and learning magic and making potions and stuff?

I just want to be a student learning magic without action combat and ideally without world saving plots and stuff. I especially hated how Hogwarts Legacy had a stupid plot and a main character throwing around killing curses with no consequences and the "high stakes", although obviously you can't actually fail the main quest.

Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince are better at giving a 'student at Hogwarts' experience than Hogwarts Legacy to be honest. They're short and don't contain a lot of action, but that seems to be what you're looking for so I definitely recommend them!

I go back to those games every year or two to get my Hogwarts fix, it's really nice how they recreated the Hogwarts from the films.

There are at least two Quidditch games: "Quidditch Champions" and the much older (GameCube/PS2 era) "Quidditch World Cup". They're pretty much "Madden" or "FIFA" but HP themed.

Not exactly what you had in mind, but no "high stakes" or "world saving plots" anyway.

Hi everyone!

I'm currently almost done with Hogwarts Legacy and I'd like some recommendations of similar games. I like how HL has a story but quests in between and lots of things to do and explore. I was wondering if anyone can recommend games that resemble HL. Thank you!

I mean, Witcher 3 and Skyrim have an insane amount of content, but are more RPG than action adventure and may feel slow after coming from Hogwarts. But both have standard combat and magic. Worth a try if you haven't played them.

Control is a great game with a good main story, great side quests, and a bunch of collectables. It's a third person shooter with super powers. Only problem it's not what I would consider open world in the same sense as Hogwarts.

Any of the Assassins Creed or Tomb Raider games match the feel of open world compared to Hogwarts and are full of content, but lack the magical component.

Also the two Star Wars Jedi games would be a good try as well.

Games similar to Hogwarts Legacy

My wife just finished the main quest as well as the side quests, she really enjoyed the game. She basically only has the achievements left to 100% the game, or at least it seems that way.

So I am now trying to find her another game to play, something similar to Hogwarts Legacy, but it does not need to be the same genre. The interaction of the game, the map, and the ability to track a quest and for the most part lead you to the objective was great for her. The game was able to teach her how to play a game on the PC and then go beyond that and teach her how to explore on her own. So I am curious if anyone else is in a similar position looking for another game.

Funny because playing HL reminded me to my early video gaming memories as a kid and playing assassins creed revelations, my first “real video game” when I was 10. I couldn’t recommend those games enough. May have to go back to confirm it’s not the nostalgia talking.

Games like Hogwarts Legacy? (Specific asks)

Posted by bringmethemcdonalds1 · in r/HarryPotterGame · 5 months ago

I've seen this post a lot and have done a lot of reddit searches, so I've seen Skyrim, Red Dead Redemption and The Witcher suggested a lot, but have some specific things I really liked about Hogwarts that I dont know if they replicate. I'm about to finish Hogwarts Legacy so no idea what to spend my time on after.

This is what I'm looking for:

-beginner friendly, if I die too much I will get frustrated and put it down

-has to be available on switch

-open world but with caveats - I liked that the world in Hogwarts is mapped, most quests will show you on the map where they are and when you've been to an area it shows you where the points of interest are

-i loved the collectibles and lots of side quests

-whimsical, fantasy vibes preferred

-strong, linear story - I don't want to miss things or have a different ending depending on what I do

-no turn based combat or needing to pick a specific character class or type that would influence what I can do

The biggest one here is the map issue, I've always been wary of open world but this one really worked for me.

Any suggestions?

I posted similar in another comment but I LOVED Assassin's Creed Odyssey, it was the next game I played after Hogwarts Legacy. I was new to gaming and literally bought my console cos of HL. I didn't get on with AC Origins personally but I can see the appeal of the game, I just didn't get into it properly but I probably will go back to it for another go soon.

I also played the Lego Harry Potter games and enjoyed them. They're not really open world with a map or anything but it kind of leads you through the story then you get free rein.

I also enjoyed the original Tomb Raider game remasters but dunno how much of that was nostalgia cos I played tomb raider 1 as a kid on PC and could never get very far so felt very successful for managing it now in my 30's 🤣

Assassins Creed Origins! It’s got constellations, a good storyline, huge map, and tons of side quests, etc. You can also change your appearance of your items like in legacy and there’s multiple mounts. There’s also downloadable content as well.

I did not enjoy Origins after Hogwarts. It was too repetitive and boring for me. Tons of quest, yeah, but all the same: go here, kill everyone, then go there, kill everyone again, then come back…

I didn't enjoy origins but I LOVED Odyssey. I can't get my brain in to origins at all but I do see the appeal. I 100% clicked with Odyssey tho and have played through it more than once. Dunno if either are available on switch tho cos I'm on Xbox.

I very much second the recommendations for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. They fit most of what you are looking for really well. The story isn’t exactly linear, but it also doesn’t matter what order you do things or affect the ending in any way.

I came on here to say the same thing. I finished Legacy and moved to BOTW. I'm also a newish video gamer. like I've done Skyrim (10 years ago) legacy and now BOTW.

I think it is a little harder, but very easy to put down and come back to if you get frustrated. I also wish it was on the PS5 just like I wish the mods for Legacy were available for the PS.

Any games like Hogwarts Legacy?

I am regrettably coming to an end (well, kind of. Already mourning the fact I’ll complete the game soon) with my playthrough, and I have not had this much fun on a game in forever! I did the narrative super easy story mode, and so many aspects are just so fun.

I wanna know what I should do next! I am very well versed on games like this in a way, but more intense ones I usually drop within a month or less. Think Elder Scrolls games, Red Dead, Animal Crossing, Elden Ring, Zelda, etc. All of those can get very overwhelming and this one doesn’t feel like that to me. Maybe I need a new game that has movies or books it’s based off of that I enjoy?

But yeah what did you do next after your playthrough!!?

Similar games to Hogwarts legacy?

Posted by Plantsandjoy · in r/XboxSeriesX · 2 years ago

Hello!

I am relatively new to gaming - but really enjoyed hogwarts legacy. I am struggling to find another game to play next.

Things I really liked in HL:

  • mix of cozy game things and fighting
  • some compelling main story line
  • good graphics
  • large world I can explore
  • walked me through which buttons did what & had a map/guide to reference back to as I went through it

Games I have tried:

  • elden ring - seemed way to complicated when I first started and just dropped me in too much
  • stardew valley - I like it in some ways, but I miss the bigger main plot line and graphics

I used to play sid meier's pirates as a kid and tried it but it didn’t work well with the Xbox X controller.

Thanks!

Sounds like a Ubisoft game might be up your alley. One of the Assassin’s Creed games might be to your liking. Origins covers ancient Egypt, Odyssey covers the Greek era, and Valhalla has Vikings.

Or Immortals Fenyx Rising if you want something a bit lighter in tone.

Ubisoft games are generally pretty guided and checkmarky. You open your very large map and it’s filled with icons marked with everything the game has for you, which seems to be what you’re looking for.

The Witcher 3 and Skyrim are both games that feature a nice main story, with especially the Witcher 3 also featuring lots of interesting side quests. Both games are also much better in the action RPG department as Hogwarts Legacy, especially when it comes to collecting gears & items, leveling, and exploring interesting locations in the open world. As to the fighting: though not the main focus like in Hogwarts Legacy, both games feature extensive use of magic. Other games down this lane are the Fable games and Skyrim's predecessor Oblivion, though Oblivion is a pretty old game and both don't come anywhere near the modern graphics in Hogwarts Legacy (though admittedly graphics in Skyrim, unless running mods on PC, also don't hold up compared to more recent games). Besides the Elder Scrolls series, the Fallout series offers a similar experience (except Fallout 76), though without the magic and instead of a thriving fantasy world a rather depressing wasteland. It also offers a morality system in a few of the games like Fallout 3, in Fallout 4 there is still some focus on the morality of actions but there isn't any morality system. Other games that offer a good story with compelling narrative: Plague Tale (medieval|linear|little combat), Guardians Of The Galaxy (crazy fantasy environments|focus on dialogue|linear), Persona 5 (JRPG|90+ hours, which might get a slog towards end|jumps between life simulator in day time, and getting into turn-based combat action after school), ...These are all great games, but have less in common with Hogwarts Legacy

If you enjoyed the large world with all the objectives scattered around, you might also like Ubisoft games (as suggested by u/GuessWh0m). Though these games have less compelling main stories, and can be a bit bloated with random objectives (especially Valhalla had this problem, while I thought Assasin's Creed Odyssey was a better game with a more compelling main story). Anyway, if you're okay with that they offer a ton of content and a beautiful world to explore. Immortals Fenyx Rising is a Ubisoft game that offers a more unique experience compared to the long running series of Far Cry and Assasin's Creed that all feel pretty similar, it also holds your hand less than some other Ubisoft titles. It even has, similar to Hogwarts Legacy, a collectible that can only be accessed at night, though that makes up one of the few irritating quirks of the game.
;-)
Watch Dogs 2 is another Ubisoft game (think Ubisoft's GTA with hacking), it offered a vastly improved gameplay over the original and offered a pretty decent story. There are still many random objectives, but there is some variety and it feels like a more unique & cohesive experience. The open world is really beautifully crafted and is actually really populated, though repetitive activities might get boring as you play the game longer. There are also some worthwhile side missions, though it doesn't go very deep into that. In addition there are pretty okay online activities with for instance some friends. It also goes further as Hogwarts Legacy when it comes to choosing between the good and bad guy option: you can either choose to complete missions non-lethally or go in and kill everyone. There are however some parts that make messing around in the game a bit less fun, like subpar driving mechanics and pretty lackluster gunplay.

When it comes to adaptations of magical universes, similar to how Hogwarts Legacy is in largely adapted from the existing lore in the Harry potter books, you might also enjoy Middle Earth: Shadow of War, the Witcher 3, or the more compact Bioshock which delivers great first-person shooters within a unique setting.

In case the immersion of Hogwarts Legacy was something you thoroughly enjoyed, on that front Red Dead Redemption 2 offers perhaps the best experience in the gaming industry (with a mix of cozy activities and fighting, and some consequences to your kind deeds or hideous crimes). Admittedly the world isn't set in the Wizarding World, but while the wild west can be brutal the world offers a lot of 'magical' moments. The main story is also extremely compelling in my opinion, and instead of the random main character in Hogwarts Legacy it really immerses you in someone's story that feels really authentic: more like the wild ride of Harry Potter's unique storyline, that offered all the crazy twists but also lots of personal experiences. However, most of your time will probably be spent just immersing yourself in the vast open world, with all its unique encounters and areas to discover.

If you really liked the idea of making different decisions in Hogwarts Legacy, but wanted the decisions to have an actual impact you will certainty enjoy the Mass Effect Legendary Edition. The first entry in this trilogy hasn't aged that well (it's still the 2007 version, but with a new coat of paint), but the full remastered package still remains an excellent gaming experience. It are great RPGs, which are pretty unique by offering a more linear & very story driven experience. Combined with the choices you can make this results in a very immersive experience.

Random extra recommendation: if you would have liked deeper gameplay around capturing fantastic beasts, Monster Hunter revolves entirely around this prospect. It also offers an interesting world and has some cozy game elements, though it's notably weaker when it comes to main story and mostly focuses on just endlessly hunting creatures and upgrading and preparing for the next hunt at your base of operations: providing a gameplay loop that is best experienced with friends. Could for instance also be an interesting franchise to try out if you played through Witcher 3 and really liked the missions where you had to hunt beasts, though it are two vastly different games.

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora is really cool and you can play this one solo or cooperatively all the way through. It is not exactly the same as HL but it is even more beautiful. It kinda reminded me a bit of like HZD meets Far Cry.

I’d recommend Ghost of Tsushima

This, only if Playstation or PC. I did not realize it was exclusive until I looked for it on the Microsoft/Xbox store.

The recent Assassins Creed games. The mechanics are almost identical. Combat is the same, down to having different “wheels”of spells/skills. Exploration is the same (chests, side quests etc). Even the petrificus totalus is the same as assassinations in AC. Huge maps with lots to do. It’s so similar I was shocked when I played HL. I would recommend AC Odyssey (ancient greece) and AC Valhalla (vikings). AC Mirage (middle east) was good too but much smaller. AC Shadows (Japan) comes out in march

Anyone know similar games like Hogwarts legacy?

Or anything with a good story or movie based. I'm 21[F] and don't really play videogames that much these days, but Hogwarts legacy had me obsessed, would even dream of that game to play when I wake up. Want a good game like that again:D

It's hard to say without more info but if you don't mind a zombie apocalyptic setting, The Last of Us (I and II) could be good. Only if you have a Play Station tho.

If you say what consoles do you have, what genres are you into and how much do you value the gameplay (specially in terms of complexity/difficulty), people would be able to make better recomendations.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is an excellent game that you may love. It's an open world Western with a great story and memorable characters

Beginner friendly and tons of fun 🤙

It's nice to get locked into a game and feel the story. I have been feeling this with Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. Not the same style game at all but it's been a lot of fun.

Hogwarts is pretty unique setting. But if you wanna run around a mage/wizard again maybe try out the tride and true Skyrim. You can create your character head to toe. Its completely open world. hundreds or quests and items to get.

Hogwarts in terms of gaming mechanics didn't do anything crazy new, but the world, characters, and story are all pretty unique that'll will make it hard for you to find something comparable

The uncharted games feel like you’re playing through an action/adventure film a la Indiana Jones.
