Gravity Falls has sparked a plethora of fan theories due to its mysterious and intricate plot. Here are some of the most intriguing and popular theories that have emerged from the fandom:
Parallel Dimensions and Hidden Agendas
One compelling theory suggests that Ford was misled about the "better world" alternate dimension he visited. Fans speculate that Parallel Fiddleford (PF) might have hidden harsh truths or lied about the dimension's utopia, suggesting a more sinister agenda [1:1]. This theory highlights the vagueness surrounding Ford's understanding of the dimension and raises questions about PF's true intentions.
Character Mysteries and Identities
Several theories revolve around the identities and backgrounds of characters. For instance, there's a theory that Robbie is actually a zombie, which ties into the show's theme of supernatural occurrences [1:5]. Another old theory posits that Gideon is a vampire, supported by his pale skin, white hair, and vampire-like cape
[5:2].
The Journals and Their Significance
The journals play a significant role in the series, and fans have speculated about their continued existence. Some believe that Dipper #3 and #4, seen in the forest during the end credits, are plotting revenge, suggesting that the journals still hold power and influence [2:1]. Additionally, Journal 3 is said to exist on Stan's computer, hinting at its ongoing relevance
[2:2].
Family Connections and Backgrounds
Theories about family connections abound, with one suggesting that Stan is actually the kids' grandfather and Carla their grandmother [5:1]. Another theory proposes that Carla is Gideon's mom, adding layers to the family dynamics within the show. These theories reflect fans' attempts to piece together the complex relationships hinted at throughout the series.
Humorous and Outlandish Theories
Some theories are more humorous or outlandish, such as Mabel having a secret twin named Lebam, who is supposedly the Llama on Bill’s wheel [5:4]. These theories showcase the creativity and humor within the fandom, even if they aren't grounded in the show's canon.
Overall, Gravity Falls continues to inspire a wide array of fan theories that explore its mysteries, character dynamics, and potential storylines beyond what was revealed in the show.
I've been diving into Gravity Falls fan theories and am amazed by the creativity and depth of some of them. What are the most intriguing or mind-blowing theories you've come across? Share your favorites and let's discuss!
One I liked that was a bit old was werewolf dipper, but that one got proven out of the show.
But I did also make a theory. Mr Poolcheck lost his hand to mermando who bit it off while hiding in the pool filter.
Robbie is a zombie and Gideon is a immortal Vampire
Wow, It would definitely explain some of their mysterious behavior in the show.
Well the book does say zombies are often mistaken for teenahers
Stan knew that Gideon wasn't psychic because he called him Stanford

You might enjoy this video. :)
wow thanks, i’ll watch it for sure
i really love the theory that ford wasn't given the full picture when he visited the "better world" alternate dimension, and that parallel fiddleford might've deliberately been hiding some harsh truths.
everything ford learns about that dimension is second-hand from PF, which is a bit suspicious. the theory is basically that PF either outright lied about how great things are and is much more sinister than he lets on, or he's simply sparing ford some of the more gory details out of consideration. there's too much vagueness for me to truly believe that everything was better in that dimension (how much did ford learn exactly? how would PF know all of this in the first place? where is parallel ford during all of this? surely even if they couldn't physically touch each other, they could still talk to each other, right?), especially since we never learned the fate of parallel stan after he left to hide journal 1.
edit: typo
So , I was rereading 3 Journal , when I thought: yes at the end they decided to throw journals in bottomless pit and there are not any of them , but what about dipper #3 and #4 they are in the forest, also dipper always carries journal with him . I know that this gives us nothing , but maybe it will be useful for some new theories.😝
At least Journal 3 still exists on Stan's computer
well the end credits of the show show Dipper 3 and four in the forest wearing rain ponchos and dipper 4 is intently reading a book also there's a code that suggests that they are plotting their revenge so yeah probably.
After episode 5 my current theory is that Zooble is the actual mastermind behind the circus.
In episode 1 we learn that Caine cannot alter people's minds, but in episode 5 he's able to make Jax vegan, after Zooble says it. In the bar scene Zooble says "I could've made it worse." Now this could just be a throw away line because they were the one who started the vote, or it's because they have higher admin access than Caine. In the softball scene, there's no evil Gangle, why? Because Zooble gets along best with her so they didn't want to make an evil version. They also seem to be the only one Caine isn't able to force into adventures, why can they say no but the others can't?
So what if Zooble is the mastermind that got stuck in their own creation?
I’m not sure how much I believe this theory, but I will offer an additional example that may lend some more evidence.
In Episode 3 Zooble has a conversation with Caine and tells him to “forget it” which he takes literally unbeknownst to her. She gave him an order and immediately complied, forgetting the conversation completely.
I’m getting my cousin to watch Gravity Falls and he just finished Carpet Diem, he said “I think the guy making the experiment is Stan’s Brother” he won’t elaborate on why he feels that way and I won’t push him too hard, or he’ll think something’s up. I think I just wanna keep you all updated on his thoughts as he watches the show.
You gotta figure out how to "accidentally" show him this picture and throw him off course.
I actually planned that 😭😭
Set up a Gravity Falls memes folder on your phone and include this, show him some of your memes and "accidentally" show him this one. Hope he notices.
SHHHHHHH DON'T TELL HIM!
Interesting, show him this post when he finds out, or maybe not if you aren't comfortable showing your account to him.
I never watched a single Gravity Falls episode when it was airing but I’m obsessed with it now (already finished both seasons and the Book of Bill). However, I was on Tumblr those days so I had already seen some pics of the big twists. But I didn’t read any theories, and that’s what I want to do now, even the ones that are already proven wrong. I’m just curious about how accurate your predictions turned out to be. I also want to read some headcanons and fantheories that are popular even now :)
I love talking about the old theory that Gideon was a vampire! Was super fun and much better than the people who just theorize him as an old man in disguise lol... (hate that theory with a burning passion btw)
The reasonings for the theory I have seen are
white hair.. vampires are old
pale skin
his cape he has on in the start of his performance in ep4 had those vampire-like collars on it (dunno what theyre called)
a lot of people thought it totally wouldve been a twist alex would have done since mabel wanted a vampire bf so badly
credit scenes of the summerween episode, it shows those weird halloween show things, one of them is called "the widdlest wampire" and of course gideon is the only character who has used the word widdle to describe himself.
Off the top my head McGucket being the author of the journals and Tad Strange being Bill’s brother who is a square instead of a triangle. Both of these were encouraged by Alex Hirsch which is kinda funny in retrospect.
If you want to learn more there’s probably tons of old YouTube videos going over the popular theories from back in the day.
There was this one about Mabel having a secret second twin named Lebam. She was supposedly the Llama on Bill’s wheel. Hilarious to look back on.
You might like this video! I wasn’t on tumblr or any social media when it was originally airing so I missed all the theories and stuff, but watching this gave me a sense of what it was like back then lol
Robbie died of heart failure a few years before the show and his parents brought him back as a zombie. The hoody he always wears is apparently to remind him of how he died
Wendy is actually a mermaid, the mud on the bottom of her boots is from climbing out of the water
Stanley is actually the kids grandfather and Carla was their grandmother. Stan went to Columbia to steal a diamond for a ring to propose to her. But when he got arrested she did not wait for him
An alternate theory is that Carla is Gideon's mom and that Bud gleeful was the Hippy who she dumped Stan for. Bud apparently says "I've always loved you Carla" in a commercial for Gideon's psychic act
Old Man Mcgucket was widely thought to have written the journals. I also remember some people thinking that Lazy Susan was Mcgucket's ex wife, because she was tall and saggy kinda like Tate.
Before "A Tale of Two Stans" a lot of the fandom believed that Stan had originally moved to Gravity Falls with Ford, to act as his and Mcgucket's muscle/body guard. There was a lot of cool fan art and fics of "The mystery Trio." and some questions about how Stan felt watching Mcguckets mind go and become like a stranger to him
Once Stan was confirmed to not have been part of the trio, some people wondered if Ford had had a girlfriend, Mcgucket's wife had made visits, or could Bill have taken a solid form back then?... there were a lot of still unanswered questions on how Ford found out 3 part harmony could shatter a zombie's skull
Crampelter (Stan and Ford's old Bully) is Soos's grandfather. Soos is confirmed to by Alex to be half white, and according to Soos's Abuelita grandpa is in Hell... so...
Thompson, Grenda, and Gordy are sibling because they all have similar complexions and builds (I think I only was this one once, and I am not sure how serious it was)
Dipper is autistic and Mabel is ADHD,
Lastly a lot of peopletheorized/wanted the cartoon to end with the revial that Dipper and Mable's parents were hoping to move to Gravity Falls and sent them there for the summer to see how the twin liked it.
.
the “gideons a vampire” one
wait explain this one ive not heard
right when gideon was introduced there was a theory made by valskibum that was something like “gideon was a vampire because of his white hair and he can actually read minds, thats why he has the journal”
Old Man Mcgucket wrote the journals. Yes, I hated that I fell for that one.
I was three in 2012, damn is Gravity Falls really 10 years old?
I found a Tumblr blog a few years ago full of fan theories from 2012. Here's a few of the interesting/poorly aged ones that were on it...
And most infamously of all...
I didn't start watching this show until after it ended. Watching it while it was airing and hearing these theories was probably a whole other experience.
I didn't follow GF until Weirdmaggeddon so I missed out on the theories, but as a fan of a different cartoon since Day 1, let's say the theories got pretty wild...
It was fun patching up evidence for kids losing eyes and arms until it lasted (and was thankfully disproven)
Similarly for me and the "Belos is a sentient abomination" and "Belos is going to merge the human and demon realms" theories. Plus the >!King is a Titan theories (which everyone dismissed)!< which I have to spoiler now 'cause that one came true. And dear god do I even have to mention "creepy Luz." What a terrible name for an evil doppelganger.
I remember my brother and I being absolutely floored when Stan opened the vending machine at the end of the first season and we find out that he had the other journals the whole time. I thought he was secretly a mad scientist
One Piece theories are very similar 💀
It was! Episodes would air and the codes at the end would get deciphered and be up on this sub in minutes. Lmao
2012 fan theories are something else. So few blogs still survive out there where people left these theories and finding a new one is always a lot fun.
I remember seeing a video a bit later on (circa 2014) speculating that Mabel had a secret twin name Lebam (Mabel spelled backwards) because some of Mermando's messages-in-a-bottle said Lebam instead of Mabel and I was like... What about Dipper though
Ah, the infamous Lebam theory. That's gotta be one of the funniest fan theories ever and a prime example of how deep the fandom went in making sure no stone was overturned. Even though I think Vailskibum has since said he's not happy with that video, it's a part of GF fandom history now no matter what, lol.
I once saw a theory thing where they thought Blendin was Morty from Rick and Morty
The cross-over reference between the two is actually how I discovered this show! 😀 I’m fairly confident I would never have discovered Gravity Falls without that lil Rick & Morty Easter egg.
I like the fact that the actual explanation is way more ridiculous.
Hi I'm new to this sub. I've been here a couple days and scrolled a bit and I haven't seen this theory thrown out there so if it's an "over done" theory discussion let me know where to find it and I'll take this down. However I'm rewatching the series now and I find it very suspicious that thier campaigns always predict what's about to happen in the beginning of each series. So (I highly doubt it but it's a connection I can't stop thinking about) what if the ending ends up being some kind of Jumanji like ending? Where it was all a campaign? But not in a way where they are all kids again and 11 never existed, but like they fight and win and the upside-down and everything goes away because the won the ultimate campaign? Thoughts? Im especially looking for theories on the D&D connections for the upside-down and everything. Do you think they are actually connected? Or just the writers way of giving "rules and lore" to the upside-down?
They’ve said already they will not be doing any variety of “it was all a dream.” This falls into that category.
What's your theory on the D&D connections?
Theory? They’re just an allegorical framework. Not only does it serve the audience, but it’s also a child’s way of understanding (horrific) realities on their terms. You’ll notice that none of the supernatural fauna— or our central heroes— match their D&D counterpart that well, but close enough to make the metaphor suitable for the show.
Having the plot be reflected in things like songs, classroom lessons or in this case D&D games is just good storytelling. It doesn’t have to be a big secret twist. It doesn’t need a theory.
Right? Like, I dont want that to be the ending. However, I can't ignore the connection, ya know?
There's a great theory that there'll be an epilogue that implies everything happened, but we're seeing it as a campaign that adult Will is teaching to Mike and El's kid.
Tbh I personally considered the “dnd” connections to just be how the kids understood it. They related it to something they understood which is something people just do naturally with things they don’t understand. That said, I’ve seen the show a huge times but I’m not a huge fan who pays attention to super tiny details and stuff just a casual viewer so i could be wrong bit so far thats my interpretation
That could totally be it, too. That's why I threw in is it just the writers way of giving us an understanding of the upside-down. But if you listen to the campaigns they are doing, what's happening in the campaigns is what happens in some sort of way in the rest of the season. That's what makes me wonder if it has a deeper connection in some way. If not, then it's a huge coincidence that their campaigns were always in relation to what they were about to face.
This is pretty much confirmed the first time you see the “demogorgon.” It looks nothing like the D&D character. Same with all of the other characters they relate to D&D characters. It’s just a method for the kids to relate to what’s happening in their lives to something they know.
Several people have thought up this ending too. I don't think it would work for many reasons, mainly because if they flashed back to the night they played the game, knowing what they know now, what would they do to prevent The Upside Down from opening? And what about El? Nobody would believe them that there was a psychic girl locked up in Hawkins Lab and some government project trying to cover up something that happened in the 1950s
That's why I said, "What if the ending ends up being some kind of Jumanji like ending? Where was it all a campaign? But not in a way where they are all kids again and 11 never existed, but like they fight and win and the upside-down and everything goes away because they won the ultimate campaign?" Because if it ended truly like Jumanji, that would just trash everything they have been through. Like it all would have meant nothing.
I just feel like there is a connection somehow. Or it's just the writers way of giving us lore and "rules" for the upside-down.
No, they're not stupid enough to let anyone know even if they did! I'm ready to be let down like I was with LOST after 6 years! This has been almost a decade!
Been thinking of rewatching the show, saw some art on deviant art and was wondering if anyone made a fan continuation of the show.
I would be cool for a group of like minded fans to make one up. I'm thinking of ideas right now Peace out
There a ton but i havent been reading much of it since i perfer more short story then full on S3 material atleast right now.
You've got any favourites?
I never read it before but "Forest of Dagger" seem like it could be of your style as it focus on Dipper and Wendy discovering the secret of Gravity Fall.
I read "Gravity Fall: Once more" and it fit your Season 3 of GF nicely, there are new OC and character that we never get to see in the offical show if you dont mind.(My only gripe is how some character were made useless in this series ESPECIALLY _ _ _ _ L _ _ but that just my take you should read it for yourself)
There's a ton of fan fics out there. One of the best is Anyway, I've Been There by u/Caleb_Nova. It's leans into Dipcifica pretty far, but it also manages to be so much more than that. It truly does feel like another few seasons of the show.
That's nice to hear, I'll check them out. Also between WenDip and Dipcifica, which is the fan favorite?
So I've come across vastly more Dipcifica content, but I also heavily lean towards that ship. So I would consider that a result more of my actively hunting that out and The Algorithm feeding me what I want.
I do a Dipcifica/continuation fic series myself that delves into the town's lore, introduces a ton of new monsters and, in my readers' opinions, is intensely compliant with the events of the show. It also has plenty of comic strips, artwork, faux issues of the Gravity Falls Gossiper, etc...
Man need to get back to this series someday.
Nice man, I'll check it out
