TL;DR The symbol in Gravity Falls is part of the intricate world-building and cryptic storytelling that includes hidden messages, codes, and symbols throughout the series. It reflects the mysterious and supernatural themes of the show.
Symbol Origins and Usage
The town symbol in Gravity Falls is deeply tied to the show's lore and its emphasis on mystery and cryptic messages. The symbol is associated with the "Society of the Blind Eye" and appears in various forms throughout the series [2:1]. These symbols are often used as part of a larger puzzle or code that viewers can decipher, adding an interactive element to the viewing experience
[2:3].
Deciphering Hidden Messages
Gravity Falls is known for its hidden messages and cryptograms scattered throughout episodes, journals, and other media related to the show. Fans have engaged in deciphering these messages, which often require knowledge of specific ciphers or codes [3:1]. For example, one decoded message from the series reads: “The body of he who bears the mark of the hand shall suffer injury, shall feel pain, shall witness death...”
[3:4]. This level of detail contributes to the show's allure and encourages fans to delve deeper into its mysteries.
Cultural Impact and Community Engagement
The Mystery Shack, a central location in Gravity Falls, has become iconic due to its role in the series. It represents the quirky and mysterious nature of the town itself. There have been efforts by fans to preserve locations inspired by the show, such as Confusion Hill, where the Bill Cipher statue was placed [4:1]
[4:8]. The community engagement around these symbols and locations highlights the show's lasting impact and the dedication of its fanbase.
Mystery and Storytelling Techniques
The use of symbols and cryptic messages in Gravity Falls is a storytelling technique that enhances the show's mystery and intrigue. Symbols are not just decorative but serve as clues to unravel the narrative's deeper secrets. This approach creates a layered viewing experience where fans actively participate in uncovering the story's hidden aspects [5:2]. The combination of visual symbols and narrative puzzles makes Gravity Falls a unique and engaging series.
“What is the Mystic Shack?”
The village of Gravity Fell seems to be any other small logging village in the great forest. However, mysteries, magic, and monsters lurk in the shadows of the forest. And the greatest mystery of all is the triangular eldritch abomination who, if unleashed, would shatter reality and sanity themselves.
“Gravity Fell” is based on Episode 36 of our podcast, "Wonderful World of Darklords", available on apple podcasts, youtube, spotify, and most podcatchers.

Happy Gaming!
You could use Gravity Fell as the finale of a campaign. The players are a group of Scooby Doo investigators who travel to various domains in order to gather the experience and tools to tackle the mysteries of their home town.
A few plot hooks:
* A trio of beholder-kin are sneaking into the town stealing metal and glass. They're short-sighted and want to use the stolen supplies to make glasses for their central eyes.
* A group of grung are sneaking across town wearing black outfits. They're young grung who after obsessive reading of certain children's literature have decided they're going to be ninja's.
* There's a series of mysterious explosions in the woods. It's a bald korred trying to invent a hair growth serum.
These are all so great!
It's a part of a horizontal "page", parts scrambled throughout the Dipper's Guide to the Unexplained shorts, in the ending.
Isn't this from the Dipper's Guide to the Unexplained shorts?
Yeah,I'm wondering what the codes are.
Okay, they decoded them already. Here http://gravityfalls.wikia.com/wiki/Candy_Monster
Go down to the cryptograms section. It's the same with the other shorts.
It is a part of the society of the blind eye symbol from the journal
I've just finished deciphering the messages from the trailer and I've noticed I'm not the only insane enough person to do it, so I'd like to know your methods. I'm ESL, so it took me +2h to crack it, but what can I say, I get so absorbed by this kind of stuff. It was fun. Took me back to Gravity Falls times.
I did a lot of guessing. Letter L was the first one I got thanks to the FILL (double L) one (although I was thinking of KILL or WILL). I was getting stuck with the short messages, so I jumped to the long ones. I got E after googling what the most common letter is in english. Then I got the THE at the beginning, the SHALL SUFFER (double F), SHALL WITNESS (double S) and then OF, HE, WHO, BUT, etc. From there I brute forced the rest of the message.
It's a cool way to hype us the puzzle nerds. The Mark of the Hand looks like something very relevant to the plot. We'll see. Until then, you can share your decoding process here, like I did. I'm curious.
I'll have to decipher the messages when I'm done with work tomorrow. The messages I saw are really interesting
There's a video I watched that deciphered the first one.
Stole this from someone else, but the first one is:
“The body of he who bears the mark of the hand shall suffer injury, shall feel pain, shall witness death, but is forever tethered to the soul. Upon injury, the body will persist. Bolstered by the mark, it will restore itself but never to completion. Upon death, the seal will awaken and bind the soul to the body once more The body of he who bears the mark of the hand has become a tomb for his soul evermore and evermore”
The second is "Fill your parents cars with bees"
The last one says Buckle up
Quite a while ago, back when this sub only had about 100 members, someone deciphered the alphabet! I bet if you look around hard enough someone will have a key. I'd send it here if i had one saved but not on my computer XD
Wait, so is this where the Bill statue is? I never really figured out where the guy actually is.
Yeah, he was moved around a bit after being found and Confusion Hill is his current resting place.
There is a wonderful play by play of the entire hunt here
ye he was somewhere else until there was a land issue
Yeah. The story behind how he ended up there is pretty hilarious. Here's a clip from the box set documentary where Alex explains what went down (starts at 0:48).
If it really is like the Mystery Shack, then this is probably a scam.
Stan: For tonight's final illusion, we have the incredible Sack of Mystery. When you put your money in it, it mysteriously disappears!
Various tourists: Oh yeah! That makes perfect sense! That was totally worth the drive!
This shack is probably gonna go down(if it does) as a legendary thing because it founded one of the possibly best cartoons of all time
At least we can live without the shack...UNLIKE THE USPS!
Says their admission is $5. I am going to donate $15 for me, my sister and my friend :)
You are a good soul, thank you
Where exactly is this from? Because those are just random uses of various symbols (some of which are also used in ciphers, but not all).
The box set! Also I love your pfp :)
There are a few messages on the box set, but they’re pretty clearly the symbols aligned in a nice row, not just random placement.
Looks like the random scribbles that are placed in the journal, AFAIK those don't mean anything either
I was looking up codes on this is not a thisisnotawebsitedotcom.comI noticed something in very small text beneath the last entry when I came across this here's what I got so far :VDD DZDB LURP FISKAU. VKH KDV WKH SURWHRWLRQRI WKH OXPEHUIR ONV VSLULWV. I think it's out of the Caesar Cipher or the A-Z Cipher
got it ?? it says :SAA AWAY IROM CFPHXR. SHE HAS THE PROTEOTIONOF THE LUMBERFO LKS SPIRITS.
some some of it doesn't make sense any of you got ideas on what it means ??
I'm currently halfway through deciphering it right now
SAA AWAY IROM CFPHXR. SHE HAS THE PROTEOTIONOF THE LUMBERFO LKS SPIRITS
This is what I got.
STAY AWAY FROM CIPHER. SHE HAS THE PROTECTION OF THE LUMBERFOLKS SPIRITS.
you know it's getting suspicious how much gravity falls content we're getting
I'm going to edit this this again once I figured out the code this might take a couple minutes
Ping me when you do I need to know
SAA AWAY IROM CFPHXR. SHE HAS THE PROTEOTIONOF THE LUMBERFO LKS SPIRITS.
Good job!
This has been documented. It translates to "STAY AWAY FROM HER CIPHER. SHE HAS THE PROTECTION OF THE LUMBERFOLKS SPIRITS." It is a reference to Pacifica earning the forgiveness and respect of the lumberjack ghost in the episode Northwest Mansion Mystery.
Edit: Forgot to mention that the code uses a caeser cipher, shifted three letters. Also in the future for codes that are typed out like this you can copy-paste them to help prevent accidentally missing letters.
oh ok
sorry :(
Why are you apologizing?
I’m very new to the fandom, I just finished the series a week ago or so. But I’ve been hearing this term being thrown around: Cipher Hunt. What was it? How did it work? What was the answer? Also, feel free to tell me about any other solved or unsolved mysteries of Gravity Falls. I want to know more!
At the end of the finale, there's a brief shot of what looks like the Bill Cipher statue in the real world. As a way of giving fans one last mystery to wrap the series on, Alex Hirsch went out and made a real replica of the statue and put it in a town in Oregon. After the show had ended, he then traveled around the world and hid clues. Then in July 2016, he tweeted out an image that set in motion an ARG in which fans had to solve all these clues and ciphers that would lead them on a hunt to find the statue; hence Cipher Hunt.
The story is honestly incredible and was what helped in hooking me on to the show back in 2017. There's many videos out there on the story and interviews Alex has done about it where he shared the behind the scenes stories on it like how a land dispute almost ruined the statue or how the whole hunt was almost ruined before GF even ended cause someone found the statue early on and he had to pay them into staying quiet for months. It's an incredible story and one of Gravity Falls' lasting legacies and aspects that make it unique to any other cartoon since.
Woah, cool.
The hunt for the real life Bill Cipher statue that was shown in the end of the last episode. There are YouTube videos you can find that go into deep detail about it but to sum it up there were clues scattered around the world leading to the next one until it finally got to the statue with other cool show related stuff along the way
Woah! Where was the statue? In the middle of a forest in Pacific Northwest or something?
It was in an Oregon forest around where gravity falls would be located. It got moved and now is at Confusion Hill
It's at Confusion Hill in Norther California right now. Originally it was in Reedsport Oregon but a land dispute made them move it there.
The hunt for the real life bill cipher statue.
It seems some people have already answered your question, if you want to learn more about the whole thing there’s this cool mini-documentary about all the events that went on with the whole thing if you want to learn more https://youtu.be/19beAwdWjbw (full disclosure though it’s been a few years since I watched it)
Woah ok!
I remember I spent hours a few months back reading all the clues on how they found the treasure. (Bare w me)
Tldr: it was a real life hunt for the bill statue. Clues were placed in different countries and states.
Important to know: the word "cipher" means a secret way of hiding something or disguising it. There are many many different ciphers out there (I found this out geocahing). Eg Morse code, Rot 13
So there is a photo after the credits at the very end of the last ep the shows a Bill Cipher statue. A few days(?) Weeks(?) Later the creator the show tweeted smth along the lines of "let the games begin" filled by # and a series of letters.
Fans figured out it was a code they needed to figure out. If you listen to the theme song at the very end you can hear whispers which sound like mumbling. Fans figured out that if you slow the speed of the voice down it says "3 letters back".
So fans looked back at the image of the staute at the end of the credits and used that cipher to get a clue.
Basically there was 14 clues (including the final) that led someone to the bill statue.
Some places where clues where found: Russia Japan Atlanta, Georgia Rhode island Los Angeles Organ
Here's a link to read about it If u wanna
Thx
I know this topic was discussed about a year ago, but I’m rewatching this episode right now and had a thought I couldn’t ignore. I wanted to see if anyone else thinks like me — and then I saw someone already did!
Here's what I believe: the 8 rings in Bill's zodiac wheel represent different generations, with the outermost ring being the oldest. Each symbol could stand for a person chosen to protect the world from Bill during their time.
When Stanford found that symbol in the cave, he learned that Bill should never be summoned again. That means Bill had been called before — and those in the older rings might have defeated him and sent him back to the Nightmare Realm (or his own universe).
The last ring might represent the 2013 timeline, when the Stan twins refused to follow the prophecy by not holding hands. Instead, they found another way to defeat Bill — maybe one that ended the prophecy altogether. That could be why there’s no new ring after that.
I like to think the battle against Bill has repeated across generations, and each ring holds the story of a team that managed to stop him. Gravity Falls has way more depth than people realize.
Sorry if my English isn’t perfect — I just really wanted to share this theory with others who might feel the same way.
I feel like it isn't generations but centuries or something along the lines of that. Because Mabel and Dipper are from a different generation than Ford and Stan. And they symbols look pretty old. Thats my theory im kind of yapping at this point.
Yes, it could be. There's an age difference between the Stan brothers and Mabel - Dipper. But what I'm saying is that there are very large time intervals between these rings. It's just misunderstood because the English I wrote to explain it is a little bad. Sorry for that missunderstanding.
I haven't been able to read The Book of Bill yet, but apparently it suggests exactly this: that there have been many previous groups of heroes who came together to stop Bill throughout history. Not all of them left much historical evidence, though Pacifica may be descended from one such woman who married into the Northwests.
I haven’t had the chance to read The Book of Bill either but if it really supports the idea of multiple groups fighting Bill in history I’m definitely going to read it soon. Thanks so much for sharing that info!
those are codes from BoB
Actually, I haven’t read Book of Bill yet ..All of this came to me while I was rewatching the episode 15 in season 2. But now I’m really curious about the book and will definitely check it out soon.
There’s a new Collectors Edition Book of Bill coming out soon.
I the book of bill >!it is explained that the first human bill contacted was the shaman who wrote the prophecy in the cave that Ford finds, with only 8 symbols. That same shaman also band bill from north america. Bill spends all of human history trying to get various people to build a portal but they all turn against him, but the closest they get to defeating him is a wizard who temporarily trapped him in an orb for the king’s amusement. Eventualy when ford summoned him to gravity falls he lifted the ban. There were only ever the symbols from the intro.!< Basicaly, it’s a really cool theory but it has already been clearly disproven by the book of bill
Oh, I got it! I guess I should definitely read Book of Bill as soon as possible. I had written down all the ideas that came to my mind while rewatching the episode, but clearly there’s more I need to learn. Thank you so much for your comment and clarification. Like I said, I’ll read the book — but since English isn’t my native language, it might take me a bit longer than usual.
Where is this picture from? It looks awesome!
And if it’s official art, yeah I love the theory of pervious generations fighting Bill!
I found this image on this Reddit page while I was researching it on the Internet. I think the owner of the post 1 year ago sent it. So I don't know exactly. But probably I saw this image ( but little bit closer ) season 2 ep 15.
I remember it being canon somewhere.
There was supposed to be trans symbolism and a “labyrinth” episode? Can someone explain this?
I think I read somewhere that there was an episode concept that was meant to parody the movie "labyrinth", but Disney tossed the idea because they thought that nobody would get the reference.
They probably just thought kids wouldn't get the reference. I'm sure they're aware that there would be adults who'd get it but the target audience for the show is kids so
I know the trans symbolism was probably Love God’s intersex symbol chain necklace but idk what the “labyrinth” episode is
It was a scrapped episode plot that Alex talked about years ago. It was gonna be a parody episode of the movie labyrinth starring David Bowie. The episode was nearly made, but Disney pulled the plug on it because they thought no one would get the reference.
Their reason was that no one would get the reference. That's it. No issue with it being too scary or problematic...just that no one would get the reference. Which is crazy because GF and other cartoons on Disney have made references to far more obscure things in episodes and they slide.
For people wanting to know what the Labyrinth episode was, Alex wanted to make a Labyrinth inspired episode where dipper needs to overcome his fear of puppets. Disney shot it down.
since when did kids needing to understand the reference matter? There were tons of references in kid's shows that completely flew over my head just due to not knowing pop culture well, but they were still fun on their own merits. And GF would probably do that better than most of those shows.
I will never understand how Disney let a cartoon featuring children making deals with a devil slide.
“Deal with the devil” is a common trope.
Not to mention, it's been in several of Disney's movies, such as The Little Mermaid (Ariel signing Ursula's contract) and Princess and the Frog (Dr Facilier's whole schtick). None of these end well for the dealer.
Yeah
It's both literally and figuratively can(n)onized in the finale iirc
I musta missed this part. Good thing AI's here to fill me in
PD: A screenshot of a browser search result covering the Caesar cipher used on Gravity Falls. It explains that the code pictured translates to "Stan is not what he seems." It then claims that the central mystery of the series is that Stan is Bill Cipher in disguise
A few years ago there was a popular fan theory that Bill Cipher reincarnated as Stanley Pines. This came mostly from their similar behaviour and phrasing as well as some other odd coincidences:
Both call Ford "Sixer", both say phrases like "buy gold" and "eeny, meeny, miney, you!", Stanley and Stanford were suprise twins so their father named them both "Stan" and the most important fuel for this theory, Alex Hirsch sang "We'll Meet Again" in Stan's voice for the Cipher Hunt, which is sung by Bill in the season finale and hints at his future rebirth.
Since the Book of Bill came out this theory is pretty much disproven, but an ai can't fact check so it probably gave you this answer because it scrapped those old theories!
Oh, that's interesting! I'm a post- TBoB fan, so I regrettably missed all the wild theories. I bet it was so much fun
Is it talking about when Bill possesses people?
AI once again showing why it's shit and should not be trusted
On the internet, TRUST NO AI!
