What Redditors are Saying

How to Prevent Mascara from Smudging

TL;DR

  • Consider using tubing mascaras, which form water-resistant tubes around lashes and are less prone to smudging.
  • Waterproof formulas can help, but may require specific removers.
  • Setting sprays or powders can reduce oil transfer that causes smudging.

Tubing Mascaras

Tubing mascaras are highly recommended for preventing smudging. They create tube-like enclosures around each lash, making them resistant to smudging and flaking. These tubes can be easily removed with warm water [1:2], [3:7], [5:5]. Popular options include L'Oreal Double Extend, Clinique Lash Power, and Thrive Cosmetics Liquid Lash Extensions [5:7], [5:3].

Waterproof Mascaras

Many users suggest switching to waterproof mascara to prevent smudging, especially in humid conditions or if you have oily skin [1:5], [3:6]. Brands like Maybelline Lash Sensational and L'Oreal Million Lashes were mentioned as effective options [3:6], [5:12]. However, waterproof mascaras can be difficult to remove, so it's important to use a suitable eye makeup remover [3:1].

Setting Sprays and Powders

Using setting sprays and powders can help keep mascara in place by reducing the oil and moisture that cause smudging. Applying a setting spray after mascara application or using a setting powder over concealer can be effective strategies [1:1], [2:1], [5:4]. Some users also recommend setting the under-eye area to prevent transfer [5:8].

Application Techniques

Proper application techniques can also minimize smudging. Allowing mascara to dry completely before blinking or applying additional coats is crucial [2:3]. Using a fresh spoolie to remove excess product can help prevent clumping and smudging [2:1]. Additionally, fanning your lashes after application can speed up drying time [4:1].

Product Recommendations

Several specific products were recommended across discussions. The ELF tubing mascara was praised for its non-smudging properties [1:2], while Maybelline Snapscara and DUP (a Japanese brand) were suggested for their fiber-based formulas [3:2]. Essence's Lash Princess range was noted for being surprisingly effective at a low price point [5:11].

Why does my mascara constantly smudge?

ORIGINAL POST

I’m 52 and you would think I know how to do make up but I guess I don’t. Because I have eye allergies, my eyes water a lot. I don’t wear make up a ton. But I would like to start wearing it more. I use a waterproof mascara various kinds honestly I love lash princess I know that it’s cheap But I do like it. I also just recently started using a lash primer before. I’ve been putting concealer under my eyes. I put the primer on. I let it dry for a couple minutes and then I applied just a little bit of mascara.

I put only a little bit of mascara on and within an hour it is always under my eyes. What’s the trick here? What am I doing wrong?

Ignore all the other advice. Buy a tubing mascara. My favorite is the one by ELF. $7. It doesn’t smudge AT ALL. But even better, when you’re done with it, it comes off with just warm water. Holds a curl better than most mascaras, and again, no smudging (and I bartend long shifts while sweating buckets)

What! You know how to do makeup? I'm 59 and still figuring out dry skin, chin hair, powder or not, sunscreen, eyebrows etc.

Ok, here's my no smudge. Chanel waterproof mascara but pick your own waterproof. After concealer and foundation, I swipe a tapered flat brush around and under eyes. Then a tiny bit of highlighter under and then UD All-nighter setting spray. Works great.

Wait for the mascara to dry and then add a setting spray (with your eyes closed). Move your eyelids while keeping them closed to woo distribute the product and then wait for it to dry. It should help.

The best one I've found so far is climax extreme

I still get it on my eyelids, but it's during application...I think I'm just bad at it.

That shit dries solid, it ain't going nowhere. I have to double wash my face and I still find mascara the next day.

I use this as well. Regular mascara smudges, waterproof mascara is such a bother to get off. The tubing mascara is perfect. It stays on all day and easily washes off with warm water.

Same - I have hooded eyes and long eyelashes and every mascara I've ever used in the past has smudged all over my eyelid throughout the day until I switched - Mac Extended Play is my favourite, but Glossier Lash Slick is also very good.

I have a trick I use.

I put on mascara after finishing spray and setting spray once the rest of my makeup is done.

I also apply initially from the tube and then use a fresh spoolie to remove excess. I use non-flaking waterproof mascaras.

I rarely have any fallout or smudging.

Advice to avoid mascara smudging underneath my eye?

My theory is that any mascara with paraffin or wax as one of the top ingredients will melt and cause smudges (especially with my oily-combo skin). Fiber mascaras are a godsend and I haven't had any issues- try Maybelline Snapscara, DUP (Japanese brand, you can find it on Amazon), or Thrive Cosmetics Liquid Lash Extensions.

I've heard that setting your under-eye area with setting powder helps, but I have very dry skin and this looks worse than the smudged mascara on me. I live in a super humid climate, and I have found that waterproof mascara does the trick, just make sure you have makeup remover that is eye-makeup specific, because rubbing to hard on your eye area is no-bueno.

I have oily, hooded eyes, with bonus bags. I cant totally keep it from smudging as the day goes on. But if I use foundation, the bake under my eye, then it does ok. I get a little smudge in the afternoon, but I can just wipe that away and I'm back in business.

Highly recommend trying a tubing mascara such as Loreal Double Extend. Tubing mascara is really interesting and form little tubes around your lashes. They usually are easy to remove, with warm water but stay on really well. Some other ones are Blinc mascara, no7 perfect lashes, thrive liquid lash and the Kevyn Aucoin mascara. Tubing mascaras are totally a game changer imo.

I use CLIO Kill Lash, which is not bad for my oily lids. there's some transfer but not panda like I get with regular mascara. Maybe a tubing mascara would work better for you too? It just melts in humidity so it's not a summer choice

Smudging on the upper lid, especially under the brows is usually from oils/moisture breaking down the mascara, not fully setting or flaking when you blink.

Switch to a tubing mascara. They don’t smudge because they form tiny tubes around your lashes and come off only with warm water. No oils means no smears.

Preventing mascara from smudging

Whenever I wear mascara, the mascara on my top lashes smudges on to my lower eyelid and I wind up with raccoon eyes after a few hours. Any suggestions for keeping my mascara in place?

Background: I have super long, curly eyelashes, which are clearly a blessing and a curse. I also wear contacts and have some dry eye problems, so I blink more than most people. I only use mascara on my upper lashes.

Have you ever considered tubing mascara? Unlike conventional mascaras which paint lashes with pigment, tubing mascaras create water-resistant, tube-like enclosures around each individual lash. Instead of flaking or smudging throughout the day, these "tubes" slide off with warm water and some gentle pressure — no makeup remover required!

L’Oréal has a pretty decent one. Tip: check out your Sunday paper for L’Oréal coupons for an even better deal!

Hope this helps!

I've been using L'Oreal Double Extend - it's a tubing mascara and it Does. Not. Smudge. Not at all. It doesn't melt when you take it off - no racoon eyes - and comes off in pieces, no dissolving. I've cried my eyes out with it on - didn't budge. And only $9-$10. Highly recommend it.

I second this! If I don’t do eyeshadow, and just go with mascara, I’ll still use a primer and powder to set my eyelids so the oil won’t break up my mascara.

This happens to me too even though my lashes are not particularly long. Even though I always wear waterproof mascara it always smudges. Just last week I bought the nyx waterproof mascara top coat and I purchased one called dr.mascara fixer by etude house online and I'm going to try it out as soon as I get it. The nyx one has worked pretty well- it doesn't smudge as much

Currently, I’m using Maybelline’s Lash Sensational waterproof mascara. Lately, I’ve noticed it leaving black smudges on my crease throughout its wear. Even when I wipe the smudges away, more mascara will deposit and create more smudges later in the day. It ruins my eyeshadow and is very frustrating. I would really appreciate tips to prevent this from happening OR mascara product recommendations. I prefer volumizing mascaras; otherwise, I’m open! I appreciate any help!!!

It's not called that in the package but it works like one! I believe there is an ingredient that makes it have the "tubing" effect and that they won't all be labeled tubing necessarily. I probably learned it on Reddit(😂) but in my experience the Sky High also doesn't smudge on me.

Tubing mascara. I prefer Blinc but there are many brands. I have long lashes and my issue is if I wear sunscreen or a dewy foundation around my eyes it’s a disaster.

No issues with Blinc and removal is less tugging on the skin because the tubes slip off with warm/hot water

Eyeliner/mascara is always coming onto undereye - what do I need to do?

Posted by imminentappeal · in r/MakeupAddiction · 4 months ago

I always leave my house liking my eye makeup, but by the next few hours, I feel like it’s always smudged and under my eyes. How do I prevent this during the application?

Routine:

  • Bobbi Brown face primer
  • Milk Makeup hydrogrip eye primer
  • Rare Beauty undereye brightener
  • Glossier stretch concealer
  • Dust Huda Beauty loose powder on lids and under eyes
  • Makeup by Mario pencil liner
  • Kiss Me Heroine mascara

I’m not sure if any of the primers/powders are helping, if my application is off, or if I just need new products!

I used to use a lot of different primers with cakey and smudged results, and I think I was just overdoing it. I eventually found that using only foundation, high coverage concealer under the eyes and on the eyelids, and setting powder (sometimed setting spray) provides a very smudgeproof base for both face and (waterproof) eye products.

It could also be that you have watery eyes, which could have various explanations (problems with eyesight, glasses vs lenses, allergies to pollen or something in the eye makeup, etc)

Are you wearing waterproof? That may help, you might just have kind of watery eyes.

2 upvotes on reddit
AdvertisingAware451 · 4 months ago

If that's Vitamin Enriched Face Base...check the ingredients. I use oils to take off my makeup. Product migrates to places where you didn't put it. That's why I have zero crows feet at 45 and got rid of a large skin flap on my eye corner even though I can't put my tretinoin directly there, it migrates.

In my personal opinion that's way too much stuff under your eyes. That's 5 layers of product and that's not counting if you put some foundation up there too.

They're not exactly long-wear products either. I just look at that and see "grease, unnecessary watery eye primer with too many ingredients, grease and more grease". Stretch concealer is...very emollient.

If you insist upon using all that you need things specifically marketed as long-wear/widely regarded as unflappable. Mario ain't that. This is quite subjective on what is like, budge-proof 'cos it depends on the person and there's plenty of competition for HG eyeliners but I've never seen Mario anywhere near mentioned. Urban Decay 24 Hour, cheaper Sephora 12 Hr Waterproof, gel eyeliners usually. Never Kohl.

For mascara look for highly rated waterproof formula or a tubing mascara. Despite what people say KissMe it's not a fully-blown tubing as such and it also depends if you pick the right one. Not all of their mascaras are the film ones. If you like the Isehan you could just use a different mascara on your lower lashes.

I had the same problem, but even got some on my eye lid, every time I wore mascara. I was told that it happens because of oil, and rather not wear waterproof mascara. That made a little bit of difference. What made a bigger difference was starting to use an eye primer both on my lids and underneath. Then I switched to the latest Lush mascara, and that it not a problem for me anymore, I don't even use the eye primer anymore. Good luck!

So I am someone who has super oily eyelids and under eyes to the point where mascara or eyeliner tends to make me look like a raccoon after a couple of hours. I have a waterproof mascara (it's the essence one in the black and blue bottle, absolutely adore it) and make sure to powder under my eyes diligently but my mascara still tends to move. I genuinely don't think it's the formula of my mascara but I was wondering what my next steps would be. My base (SPF, primer, and color correction products) are all water based and I don't have any migration problems with the rest of my face 🫠 sorry if I'm not sharing enough info, I'm new to makeup! 🙏🏿

Waterproof will not help you here- your face oils are breaking it down, not water. Oil removes waterproof mascara. A tubing mascara is going to serve you better. It forms little polymer tubes over the lashes instead of waxes, it resists water and oil.

How do you prevent mascara from smudging

Here are some effective tips to prevent mascara from smudging:

  1. Choose the Right Formula:

    • Opt for waterproof mascara, which is less likely to smudge compared to regular formulas.
  2. Use a Primer:

    • Apply an eyelash primer before your mascara. This helps to create a barrier and can enhance the longevity of your mascara.
  3. Set with Powder:

    • Lightly dust translucent powder on your eyelids and under your eyes after applying concealer. This helps absorb excess moisture and oil.
  4. Avoid Over-Application:

    • Apply mascara in thin layers rather than thick coats. This reduces the chance of clumping and smudging.
  5. Curl Your Lashes:

    • Use an eyelash curler before applying mascara. Curled lashes can help keep mascara away from the skin.
  6. Use a Setting Spray:

    • After completing your makeup, use a makeup setting spray to lock everything in place, including your mascara.
  7. Be Mindful of Touching Your Face:

    • Try to avoid touching your eyes or face throughout the day, as this can transfer oils and cause smudging.

Recommendation: If you frequently experience smudging, consider trying a waterproof mascara like Maybelline's Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara or Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara. Both offer great staying power and help prevent smudging throughout the day.
