Tips for Long-Lasting Makeup

Skin Preparation and Primers

Proper skin preparation is crucial for long-lasting makeup. Ensure that your skincare products are fully absorbed before applying makeup to prevent separation [4:1]. Using a primer can help improve the longevity of your makeup. The Elf Power Grip Primer is recommended for its effectiveness in keeping makeup in place [3:2]. Additionally, some users suggest using blotting paper or setting powder before applying primer to control oiliness [3:3].

Layering Techniques

Layering techniques can significantly enhance the durability of your makeup. Applying setting spray between each layer of makeup helps lock everything in place [3:1], [4:3]. Mixing setting spray directly into foundation before application can also provide extra staying power [5:1]. For eyeshadow, using a primer like Milani's can prevent creasing and ensure it lasts all day [5:4].

Setting Products

Using both setting powder and setting spray is essential for long-lasting makeup. Fit Me and Huda Beauty powders are popular choices [2:2], [4:3]. Setting sprays such as Urban Decay All Nighter and One Size are highly recommended for their ability to keep makeup intact throughout the day [5:1], [5:7].

Product Recommendations

Several products have been highlighted for their long-lasting properties. For foundation, Estée Lauder Double Wear and Dior Forever are frequently praised by professional makeup artists [5:3]. For lip products, Morphe Soulmatte Liquid Lipsticks and Maybelline Super Stay are known for their durability [2:1], [2:4]. L'Oreal Sky High Waterproof Mascara is a favorite for lasting wear without flaking [2:3].

Additional Tips

For those with oily skin, applying loose powder to the T-zone before foundation can help control shine [3:4]. Cream blushes and bronzers set with matching powder products can enhance longevity [4:3]. Lastly, ensuring that you use the right tools, such as a brush or sponge suitable for your products, can make a difference in application and wear time [4:6].

My makeup doesnt last more than 3 hours max plsss helppp

I finish my makeup routine it looks amazing and everything, full coverage, no creasing etc. Im not even joking it last maybe up to one hour looking like that then it starts slowly evaporating and i look even worse than if i didnt wear makeup bevause of all the creasing and the makeup clinging to my pimples/ pimple scars.

This is my routine

  • elf niacinamide primer ( i dont always use this but i feel it doenst even make a difference for the longevity part)

  • saie glowy gel

  • rimmel multi tasker better than filters

-it cosmetics cc cream better than skin

  • huda beauty concealer /nyx bare with me concealer depends

  • rare beauty bronzer/ revolution cream the one in the pan

-Blushes i alternate a lot between saie, makeup by mario, nars , nudestix, or tower 28.

-huda beauty loose powder

  • hoola powder bronzer

  • again i alternate between milani powder blush, makeup by mario powder blush, or nars powder blush

-any mascara

  • milani setting spray make it last

Directly before my makeup i usually just do moisturizer then spf, sometimes i use glow recipe dew drops.

PLSSSSS HELP

Make sure that you are setting your face with powder (fit me is rlly good). Also finishing spray is not the same as setting spray so try a setting spray to lock ur makeup in (elf green setting spray is good). If ur mascara keeps flaking off try a waterproof one. I personally dont like waterproof but I use the essence lash princess pink one and its good for volume and length.

These are some of my favs!

L'Oreal Sky High Waterproof Mascara - I've used this for years and keep coming back to it.

nyx Longwear Eyeliner - goes on pretty well, is relatively easy to blend if you get to it quickly, and then dries down really well.

Covergirl Lip Stain - I'm a lip minimalist and love how easy this is to use and blend with my finger. I usually pop a gloss on top, but it looks good on its own once that wears off. no blotchiness for me!

I love the Maybelline Super Stay lip products, both matte and vinyl. I haven’t tried any dark shades in the vinyl, but I have a nice daytime mauve in that. They’re my favorite formula for matte black.

Use blotting paper or setting powder on before your makeup primer and use a setting spray. I like the Milk matte version. Please don’t use hairspray on your face. Good luck!

Skin prep but like 1 hour before and if u have dry skin reapply a light gel based moisturizer or rose water even before you start putting on makeup. Oily T zone? Put lose powder there and then apply foundation, tap/massage ur moisturizer under the eye and smile lines really well

Tips for long lasting make up.

Posted by Ooops14 · in r/Makeup · 3 months ago

Hello everyone ! I really need some tips for make up.

I’m (F29) not really good with makeup up. I never do anything extravagant because I simply don’t know how to do it. I’m more focused onto skincare. I usually just do contour, concealer, blush, light brown eyeshadow and mascara. Because I wake up at 5am to go to work i usually noticed that around 09am all my make up is gone. Like my skin is litteraly drinking the make up out of my face. Some Sephora sale advisors told me to apply the make up forever primer and the charlotte tilbury fixing spray before and after applying the make up but nothing is happening. And my blush last mostly 2h. As I work for a big fashion company I would like to be more elegant at work and not looking so tired. Thank you in advance for your help and sorry for my English.

I like to set concealer with a pressed powder with a brush, then loose powder with a powder puff, (Huda beauty for example) if I really want it to last. For cream blush and bronzer I set with a powder blush and bronzer to match the cream ones. I spray my makeup in between layers with a setting spray to eliminate cakiness. For eyeshadow to last, I like to use a cream eyeshadow like Mac paint pot.

I personally love the Nyx Dewy Setting Spray. I usually apply in between layers of makeup + at the end to finish. It may also be helpful to make sure that your skincare is fully absorbed before applying primer and other makeup. Having moisturized, clean skin is definitely important for longevity.

I have found that blush typically fades the fastest on me regardless, but I have definitely found cream blush to last better on my skin. I loooooooove the Kaja Cheeky Blush Stamp cream blush. Blends like a dream and lasts pretty well!

I’m definitely interested in what others will have to say as well on this. I may not have the best advice but I hope this helps!

Can I ask how much and what kind of skincare you use? Sometimes cream products separate when they come into contact with skincare that hasn’t dried down.

Also are you using any kind of powder? Primer and setting spray only go so far at locking in creams.

I buy my skincare directly in Korea, I do 2 trips a year. So my skincare is really focused on hydratation, collagen, peptides, retinol 2/3 times a week. My moisturizer is from Pyukan yul. For the powder I use Fenty, the transparent one. The mattifying powder.

I put my foundation/skintint on the back of my hand (or mixing plate) and also spray my setting spray directly into it and mix it all together and THEN apply to my face. I did this for my disney trips and my makeup wouldn't budge. I use the urban decay all nighter spray.

Edit to add- at the very end I still use setting spray all over, so basically youve got 2 layers of spray to really keep that making from moving/fading

Tips to ensure your makeup lasts a long time?

Posted by Gacha_SY · in r/Makeup · 5 months ago

For context, I have an event in less than a week that lasts from 9 in the morning till 6 in the evening for two consecutive days. It will be physical, meaning a ton of sweating, plus its very hot and humid where i live. Adding on, i have very oily skin.

So, with these little tidbits, does anyone maybe have some advice they could spare?

(Ps: if you have advice for just ensuring that foundation lasts, thats already great since i dont use a large variety of makeup and foundation is one of the most crucial steps in my look.)

Start with a mattifying primer or setting spray. Apply your foundation and all your creams, then setting spray again. Then powders, and potentially setting spray a third time. And so on, you get the idea.

This is assuming you're using a normal setting spray and not one of the super powerful "hairspray for your face" ones like the OneSize. In that case you probably don't need so many layers.

3 upvotes on reddit
Gacha_SY · OP · 5 months ago

I dont think my primer is mattifying so hopefully thats alright 😅. I use the charlotte tilbury setting spray and apparently its supposed to be lightweight? Ill give it a shot, thank you!

The One/Size aerosol setting spray. Though you can also literally spray your face with hairspray. I bet if you looked at the ingredients, it’d be the same damn ingredients.

MUA trick use rice blotting paper as primer before foundation.

Use long wearing foundation. Estee Lauder will give you 10 day sample supply for free if you go to store Nordstrom, Dillard's, Macy's and ask for color match. Double wear sheer is great or original double wear

Exfoliate face day before event. Dead skin cell build up means foundation attaches fo dead skin cells and when body naturally sheeds them, your foundation deteriorates faster.

MAC studio fix setting spray

Waterproof every thing. Liner, mascara, eyeshadow primer.

How to make your makeup last? PLEASE HELP

Posted by Rich_Occasion_8483 · in r/MakeupAddicts · 11 days ago

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for tips on how to make your makeup last for as long as possible OR how to freshen it up without it looking cakey.

I work an 8 hour job in an office setting and by the time I'm 6 hours into my shift my makeup looks chopped. My foundation will be patchy/ nonexistent and my mascara always ends up smeared under my eyes. It never looks good by the end of an 8 hour day and I just took a second job in customer service so it's really important I look presentable for my shift after my 8-4.

I skin prep with moisturizer and eye cream, use primer and setting spray all to no avail!

PLEASE HELP~~~

I prefer setting powder over setting spray, my face always either got to hot or oily for setting spray after a while.

Apply Wet n Wild photo focus setting powder. Don't just tap it into your face. Press it.

Now apply a light mist of setting spray. Let it dry.

I will sometimes spritz my face with a little setting spray and concealer to refresh everything. But otherwise this holds the makeup together for hours and hours.

Give me your best hacks for making makeup last. No matter the makeup I put on in the morning by the end of my workday, I look like I’m not wearing any makeup. Ive had moderate success (maybe 6 hours of makeup staying) with applying my foundation with a beauty blender thats been sprayed by setting spray, and then misting setting spray over my face at the end of the routine like normal (as a last step after a lightweight powder though i dont powder my whole face, personal preference to do just the t zone as i have dry skin) also make sure its an actual setting spray thats not just a “face spray” cause ive found alot of brands are coming iut with general hydrating facial sprays and then slapping a “sets makeup” claim on it despite having no ingredients that would work to set makeup. Ive heard good things about o/s brand and milk makeup or urban decay have had setting sprays for years now which makes me think they work well?

Ive also anecdotally found that my makeup applies better and my skin seems to keep the makeup on a bit longer when i dermaplane/shave the baby hair off my face. I use less skincare when i do that as the baby hairs really do absorb product make up included

I feel you on this though, makeup just seems to disappear on my skin! I would say using certain foundations with silicone might be helpful as they are not as fast absorbing. Also i think heavier/more full coverage lasts longer in my experience. Though Ive recently been layering a medium coverage foundation over a tinted sunscreen with no primer and it definitely doesnt last long as when i did full coverage. but thats ok cause my priority now is to reapply sunscreen throughout the day and if i did that it would mess up a full face of makeup. I think its just personal preference on that one!

Oh! And lastly i prefer cream blush but have been setting it with a powder blush lately in a similar shade and it helps alot with the blush staying! Same with bronzer

Just FYI- urban decay just reformulated their setting spray because the patented ingredient that makes it good isn't their own patent and they did not want to keep paging the patent company for it, so the new spray is actual trash. Patent company even released a statement that they didn't suddenly insanely up prices on UD or anything either UD just flipped a 180

When you say “before makeup application”, does this also include primer, or would you spray after primer? I usually spray after liquids/before powders and then at the end and my makeup usually lasts long enough, but I’m always up for trying new techniques and comparing :)

Milk makeup hydro grip primer makes my makeup last all day, and I get hot flashes so I really put it to the test! If I need extra staying power I use Nars setting powder, just a light dusting. I do not like any of the setting sprays I've tried, they all mess up my makeup.

Oh man, that end-of-day fade is the worst, especially in the humidity. Start with a grippy primer matched to your foundation (water-based with water-based) after your SPF absorbs fully, then layer setting spray between steps like foundation, concealer, and powder for that sandwich method lock-in. Use mattifying powders on oily zones and a dewy mist overall to keep it fresh without cracking, plus blot sheets mid-day instead of touching your face to refresh without smudging. For bloodshot eyes, a quick saline drop can perk 'em up, and if your base is oxidizing, a better shade match helps it stick longer. What's your skin type like?

Setting my makeup

Posted by Natology27272 · in r/Makeup · 2 months ago

Hello everyone. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to keep my makeup on my face for more than four hours. I wear it to work every day (I work in retail but I don’t do anything that makes me sweat more than an average person) and to church on Sundays but it never lasts more than a few hours. I use setting spray after moisturizer then put on foundation (Sephora collection because I don’t know what I’m doing well enough to warrant a better company for my foundation yet) and concealer (Lancôme), put on setting spray again, and then mascara (Sephora collection) and blush (ilia cream and some powder) The only thing that sometimes stays is the blush. Should I be putting powder foundation over top to set it? I heard that will make it stay since it does that sort of with my blush but I don’t want to spend the money on it if I don’t have to. Sorry that this is so long I just started doing makeup and I don’t know what I’m doing. Would appreciate any and all advice.

The reason why your makeup is not lasting is because you’re not using any setting powder. That’s what keeps the foundation to last A HELLA long time. So let me try to break this down. 1st Cleanse your face, 2nd use a sunscreen with no white overcast, then use a setting spray with spf (i prefer milani), now after that dries down we use the LIQUID foundation, make sure to shake the foundation bottle then squeeze onto back of the hand, then blend out that foundation with your foundation brush try rubbing it circular motions. After that press brush into the face avoid underneath the eyes, then place your concealer everywhere you place it and the contour. Once that is complete hit it with the setting spray again to bring hydration back into the face, then blend it alll. NOW THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT this use the she glam duo setting powder its the best and is available on Amazon for $8. Take a powder puff and rub it into the pressed powder on the top and place underneath the eyes, where you blended out the concealer. Now we want to take the loose powder and tap over the puff. Once you’ve done that you rubb the powder puff together. Then we press that powder all over the face. We have powder this is the moment for the powdered bronzer to bring the warmth back. Over the same places where we had contour. After that place your blush and complete with setting spray. You got this hope this helps

This is so helpful, thank you. is there a way to keep that “Dewey & hydrated” look and keep my make up in place? Whenever I use setting powder it makes my face so matte.

1 upvotes on reddit
Ill-Relationship9673 · 2 months ago

Well typically that would be your foundation and setting spray. The foundation should be a radiant finish and you can specifically buy a Dewey finish setting spray

1 upvotes on reddit
Ill-Relationship9673 · 2 months ago

Well are you also using a matte finish foundation? Because if you are the setting powder is not going to change the finish of the foundation. But that’s typically what you use if you have oily skin

1 upvotes on reddit
Natology27272 · OP · 2 months ago

Thank you for explaining that fully and the bronzer part. I’m not trying to overwhelm myself by learning how to do multiple different things at the same time (I’m crazy busy right now with classes and work so I’m trying to take it slow) so I haven’t started learning how to do bronzer yet but that’s my next step. I’ll try this. I haven’t been letting the spray dry could that be part of the problem?

2 upvotes on reddit
SeaThePointe0714 · 2 months ago

I would try a few things!

One, make sure your skin is prepped well. Cleansed, moisturized, etc. A well prepped face is going to be less likely to dry out or get overly oily, which helps longevity.

Two, try a primer instead of setting spray before your base. Not everyone agrees on the necessity of primer but as an oily girl, I always use it and my makeup always stays put.

Three, as everyone else has said, setting powder is your bestie! It does NOT have to be expensive. You can get incredible setting powders at the drugstore for cheap. Just be sure you get a true SETTING powder and not a finishing powder. You want something translucent, finely milled, and not talc free! You can use it sparingly, in just your problem areas, or all over if you really want to lock in your whole face. Use a puff or dry sponge to press it into areas like your under eye and a fluffy brush to dust it all over the face.

Four, use setting spray as your last step after all your makeup & powder. Skip using it in between every step and just use it last. Use a decent amount! You don’t want it running down your face but a good soak and then letting it dry completely will bring life and glow back to your face after powder and will ensure you’re locked in!

Five, as a bonus - if you don’t want to buy setting powder but have powder versions of your liquid/cream products, use those over top. So powder blush over cream, powder bronzer over liquid, etc. Same exact idea as regular setting powder! Your blush is staying because you’re using liquid then powder, so you already cracked the code on that one!

I totally get not wanting to spend money on more products but as I mentioned, you don’t have to buy everything from Sephora at a high price tag! Some of my favorite makeup products are drugstore! L’Oréal is always a good bet across the board for any product. ELF is great, NYX, Wet N Wild, Milani, Physicians Formula….soooo many fantastic products at a fraction of the cost of a lot of high end brands but with equally as amazing or better quality!

3 upvotes on reddit
Natology27272 · OP · 2 months ago

It’s less that I’m trying to save money (although I am) and it’s more because I don’t want to get overwhelmed. with multiple new steps at once. I budget for it accordingly till I feel like I understand the previous step before learning how to do a new product. Thank you for your help. I didn’t know I was supposed to be washing my face twice a day because I also thought that was unnecessary until I was like 17. (I know it’s terrible)

Best recommendation I got from an MUA with nearly 40 years experience - use powder foundation and then a setting spray. Started using the MAC powder foundation and now it lasts even 12 hours, plus I can touch it up no problem

Wait so are you saying that you put on liquid foundation, concealer setting spray, then blush? You’re not using a setting powder? Because if you’re not using any setting powder THATS the big issue.

No I am not using any powder besides powder blush. I had a feeling that was the problem but didn’t want to spend the money if I didn’t have to

Yes girl that is 100% the problem the reason why people put on setting powder it’s because it’s what makes the makeup last so long. There is not one person who doesn’t use it. If you don’t use it u might as well kiss your makeup goodbye

Setting powder is all you need, more importantly than setting spray. You can use a cheap one they all work decently enough.

how to make makeup last longer

Posted by sardines4lunch · in r/MakeupAddiction · 3 years ago

i’m very insecure w/o makeup and i HATE when it rubs off. Whenever my friends and I go to parties i get pretty frustrated when my makeup rubs off or sweats off easily. Or in general when i’m out and about my makeup tends to get oily and rubs off. What products should I use to make my makeup last longer ? any advice ?

Lightly powder your face before foundation. Also set your foundation with a strong setting spray. Skindinavia bridal spray is good. If you have a special occasion, some drag performers use green marble setting spray. It’s incredibly strong since they use it on stage while dancing. It’s sweat and oil proof, but smells strongly of alcohol. Definitely to be used sparingly

I really love the Nyx dewy finish setting spray. I think they have a matte version too if you prefer that finish.

For eye makeup, I've found a primer makes a big difference.

I’ll second the Urban Decay primer—it really helps eyeshadow to go on bright and stay there.

I always buy cheaper drugstore products, and I can't remember all the brands I've tried, but they all seemed to work pretty well. The one I'm currently using is NYX. I've heard really good things about the Urban Decay one too. I always have a problem with settling into creases and transferring without it, but primer fixes that!

I like the nude by nature one in a small tube :) otherwise loreal do one thats really tacky... I dust a tiny bit of translucent powder over either one before I start with shadows. :)

Something that I do that makes my makeup last forever is 1) moisturizer/sunscreen 2) primer 3) light layer of setting powder 4) setting spray 5) foundation 6) setting powder and 6) setting spray. It sounds like a lot I know but I swear by it. Probably not the best for dry skin but i have oily skin and used to have bad acne and acne scars and this helped my skin also look super smooth. And I swear it doesn’t look cakey. Make sure to also use the same based products (water based moisturizer, primer and foundation or oil based) helps tremendously with the break up of make up.

tips for long-lasting makeup

Here are some effective tips for long-lasting makeup:

  1. Start with Skincare:

    • Cleanse and Moisturize: Begin with a clean, moisturized face. Use a lightweight moisturizer that suits your skin type.
    • Primer: Apply a makeup primer to create a smooth base and help your makeup adhere better.
  2. Use Quality Products:

    • Long-Wear Formulas: Choose long-lasting or waterproof foundations, eyeliners, and mascaras designed to withstand wear.
    • Setting Products: Incorporate setting sprays or powders to lock in your makeup.
  3. Layer Wisely:

    • Light Layers: Apply makeup in thin layers rather than thick applications. This helps it to set better and last longer.
    • Cream to Powder: Use cream products for blush and eyeshadow, then set them with a matching powder for added longevity.
  4. Blotting Papers:

    • Keep blotting papers handy to absorb excess oil throughout the day without disturbing your makeup.
  5. Avoid Touching Your Face:

    • Minimize touching your face to prevent transferring oils and smudging your makeup.
  6. Set Your Makeup:

    • Finish with a setting spray to help your makeup stay in place. Look for formulas that offer a matte or dewy finish based on your preference.
  7. Touch-Up Kit:

    • Carry a small touch-up kit with essentials like powder, lipstick, and concealer for quick fixes throughout the day.

Recommendation: For a reliable setting spray, consider Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, which is known for its long-lasting hold. Additionally, using a silicone-based primer can create a barrier that helps makeup last longer, especially in humid conditions.
