How to Apply Mascara Correctly

TL;DR

  • Start at the base, wiggle and roll upward.
  • Use a lash primer for better results.
  • Consider tubing mascaras for easier cleanup.

Basic Application Technique

The foundational technique involves starting at the base of your lashes and using a wiggling motion while rolling the wand upwards. This helps coat each lash evenly and prevents clumping [1:1][2:3]. Some users recommend applying mascara while looking down into a mirror to avoid smudging on the eyelids [3:1].

Enhancing Lash Appearance

For longer and more defined lashes, consider using a lash primer before applying mascara [2:3]. Curling your lashes beforehand can also make them appear longer and more open [2:1][4:1]. Applying mascara from behind the lash tips can give the appearance of longer lashes [2:1].

Avoiding Clumps and Smudges

To prevent clumping, use a clean spoolie or mascara wand to comb through your lashes both before and after applying mascara [4:5][4:8]. Warming up the mascara in your bra can help smooth out the formula, making it less likely to clump [4:1][4:4]. For those who experience smudging under the eyes, waterproof mascara can be a solution, although it is harder to remove [5:1]. Alternatively, avoid applying mascara to the lower lashes altogether [5:3].

Special Techniques and Products

Some users find success with tubing mascaras, which form tubes around each lash and are easier to clean up if mistakes occur [1:3]. Using smaller wands can offer more control and precision during application [3:6]. Additionally, experimenting with different brands like Lancome or Benefit might yield better results due to their smaller wand size [3:12].

Additional Tips

Consider blinking into the wand rather than running it through your lashes to avoid accidental smudging [2:2][3:7]. Applying mascara in zig-zag motions can help distribute the product more evenly and separate the lashes [4:2][4:7]. If you have oily skin, opting for mascaras that form tubes can prevent smudging [5:6].

hm. let me try again.

imagine you’re holding a pencil. keep your elbow steady, and place the mascara wand precisely and securely at the outer edges of your lashes. look straight at the mirror—then look down, and to the right, until you can feel the brush literally (yes, literally,) connect with your waterline. slowly drag the brush upwards as you look back and forth—just maintain contact with your waterline.

now place your brush vertically, and do not add extra product. delicately add a bit of definition on your outer lashes, and if you desire, your inner lashes too.

i never dip my wand back into the tube if i’m defining my lower lashes.

practice makes perfect ;)

Have a look into tubing mascaras! They are so good when learning to apply mascara because it cleans up easier.

I am pretty crap at application because I wear glasses and my lashes are quite long, (so can't see well) the wand sometimes touches my nose, eyeshadow area or I stuff up the lower lashes and leave marks, but it doesn't matter because my tubing mascara doesn't smudge.

There are heaps of tutorials online. If I am trying I find it best to brush my lashes with a clean mascara wand first (spoolie), then get close and look down into a magnifying mirror tilted up.

I saw this on Instagram and it worked really well to get fuller lashes: wiggle the wand in at the base of the lashes and then move it horizontally back and forth (like a toddler learning to brush their teeth). This coats all sides of the lashes with product. Then you pull the wand up and through like normal until you like the shape. Use an eyelash curler before applying to open your eyes up! Any drugstore curler will do

  1. curl lashes with a warm eyelash curler
  2. place one layer from the top of your upper lashes moving down
  3. place one layer from the bottom of your upper lashes going up
  4. as lashes are drying use a dry eyelash comb and brush upward.
  5. recurl with warm curler for extra hold and lift (I still use falsies after all this cause ive never had good lashes😫🤣-even before the curler which can remove a couple lashes here and there😄) also i forgot to add waterproof mascara helps hold the curl.

Robert Welsh covered this and it really helped my application. Remove most of the mascara from the wand so there are no clumps or drips off the end. Start at the base of your outer lashes and wiggle back and forth WHILE rolling upward. Repeat to do middle and inner lashes.

How do you apply mascara?

Posted by [deleted] · in r/beauty · 4 years ago

I know the title is baffling, hear me out.

For ages I thought mascara was just something you put on without thinking about it. It never gave me glamorous, dramatic results like it did for other girls, but I assumed it was just something about their lashes. Mine are naturally dark and naturally curled, but also quite short. So for years my mascara routine was one coat, try and get the inner corner lashes, done.

Since then I saw two tips about mascara application.

  1. Do the bottom lashes first as it's less messy that way
  2. Do small up-and-down motions at the base of your lashes with the mascara wand to make your lashes seem fuller.

Y'all.

I can't tell you how helpful that bottom tip was. There is an actual art to putting on mascara as opposed to just layering and de-clumping. So I was wondering, how do you apply your mascara/did you ever give any serious thought to the application.

Me too, but I actually blink into the wand rather than run it through my lashes. I find I am less likely to accidentally mascara my eyebrow that way.

For me, applying a coat of lash primer before mascara is essential! Once I discovered the length and volume I could achieve with a primer vs. numerous, clumpy coats of mascara, I never looked back. And I’m in the “wiggle” camp for application of both.

48 upvotes on reddit
sluttymangoeyes · 4 years ago

Same! I actually don’t use a “primer” per se but a transparent mascara and it helps me so much to avoid clumps and also it separates more my lashes

Does anyone else look bad with too much? I only apply it to the wings of my lashes. If I do the bottom I look like a creepy doll and for some reason my lashes look better straight than curled, can't be the only one or am I doing something wrong.

112 upvotes on reddit
HMSbitchcraft · 4 years ago

I don't know if this will help but I don't apply it to the entire length of my bottom lashes. I kinda do the wiggle at the root that OP mentions in the post without pulling the mascara down the length? If that makes sense.

Ugh if I put on just a little too much it weighs down my lashes and makes my eyes look... just not good. I’ve learned to put it on very lightly, just barely brushing against it, as evenly as possible. It helps to keep my eyes looking bright and open. One or two gradual, carefully applied coats, 2 1/2 if I have a full face of makeup. If I apply it like most girls do, it will seriously ruin my entire look.

I wiggle, wiggle then blink, blink then comb thru. My lashes are thin and short. The blink blink helps build up product on the tips for me and helps them become fabulous. I do two to three coats depending on how pressed for time I am. I use Lancome Monsieur Big, it's my HG.

I always get compliments on my eyelashes, here is my mascara routine:

  1. Curl your lashes
  2. Move wand from root to tip while twirling hand in a curling motion (a MAC associate gave me this tip)
  3. Focus on the tips and apply the mascara from behind the lash tips (this makes my eyelashes look so long!)
  4. Carefully use a safety pin or something similar to separate any clumps

I wish I could show you all, hope I described it well enough!

I've heard that twirling tip before but I am just not coordinated enough to twirl the wand and move it from root to tip at the same time! I can rub my stomach and pat my head but I can't apply from root to tip and twirl at the same time ¯\(ツ)/¯

Someone please explain to me, how the frick do you apply mascara without getting it all over your eyelids?

Posted by Miss-Ess · in r/MakeUpAddictionUK · 2 years ago

I have had this problem since I was a teenager (I'm 36) and never figured out a solution. I don't have overly long or curly eyelashes but whenever I apply mascara it ends up all over my upper eyelid and the part of my eyelid just above where you would apply liquid liner.

It never really bothered me too much, as I very rarely wear makeup and when I do I don't use eyeshadow so I just rub it off using a cotton bud and makeup remover but I recently have started experimenting with eyeshadow looks and don't want to ruin my efforts when I apply my mascara. I have tried tipping my head up and looking down but end up poking myself in the eyes or getting it under my eyes. If I apply mascara First then I get fallout on my lashes when I apply the shadows.

Oh I do this all the time it's infuriating! Here's what I have found helps:

  • The smaller the brush the less transfer there is.

  • Apply your mascara while looking down into a mirror.

  • Roll the wand forward as you apply (so wiggle into place at the base of the lashes, then as you pull it through the length turn your hand away from your face).

  • Count to 60 and DO NOT LOOK UP! Keep those eyeballs pointed downwards the full minute.

  • Before you look up, tap your lashes to see if they are dry. If not, count another 60.

  • If you do look up and you find mascara where it shouldn't be, don't panic. Finish the rest of your face if you have that to do or browse Reddit for five minutes. Then take an eyebrow spoolie and lightly rub it across the misplaced mascara. That will lift the blobs off your skin without disrupting your eyeshadow. Don't do this straight away, the marks need to be properly dry otherwise the spoolie will just smudge them everywhere and make things worse.

5 upvotes on reddit
Miss-Ess · OP · 2 years ago

I think you might be onto something with the rolling forward technique, I just wiggle at the roots and roll up. It's always as I am applying the mascara, not after so at least that is less to worry about. As I apply it my eyelid and lashes bend up and fold back on themselves if that makes sense? Maybe you supposed to tense your eyelid somehow? Lmao. I have a random old mascara wand lying around, would that work instead of an eyebrow spoolie? It's the same thing right?

1 upvotes on reddit
rjmythos · 2 years ago

It definitely helps distribute the mascara more evenly too! I'm also now trying to tense my eyelid so thank for that giggle 😂 A clean mascara brush would work the same definitely!

Use a mascara with a thinner wand. Not on of those mascaras with fat bristles like the better than sex wands. You need a tool that allows you to be more detailed and careful when applying.

I use Lancome lash idole or Benefit they're real and they seem quite small wands to me. They're the type with the tiny little spikes on. I might see if I can beg one off a makeup counter that is very thin and see if that helps.

3 upvotes on reddit
Mediocre_Bother4436 · 1 year ago

I second the Benefit mascara; It's a small wand and I use the travel size one since it has a shorter reach which gives me more control. If you get a tiny speck on your lid, just get the tiniest amount of makeup remover on a cotton swap and lightly dab it off, your makeup will be fine :)

I am NOT able to apply mascara without it clumping and makes my lashes stick together in groups, instead of separated and defined. People with nice eyelashes, what technique do you use when using the wand? For what it's worth, right now I have Benefit Roller Lash and Essence Lash Princess.

Any tips?

First curl. Then make small wiggle motions with the wand side to side thru the lashes while rolling it away from you at the same time. I learned from Robert Welsh.

I do this too. Then I pull the lashes on the outer corner outward with the tip of the wand to make them stand out and give my eyes a more elongated look.

Mirror on the counter or table looking down which opens up your eye and then quick even strokes outer corner to inner corner, one eye at a time until I have enough coats for thickness and length. Less coats for work, more for a nighttime event. I've tried mascara at all price points and found L'oreal voluminous works the best.

I put my mascara in my bra to warm it up while i do my other make up, to make it go on smoother.

Curl my lashes. Apply mascara by zig zaging from the root upwards a few times. Then use a q tip to clean up where i smudged it above my eye. :)

I second warming up the mascara in my bra :'D Mascara has a lot of wax components und by warming it up with your body heat, the little clumps melt down and the formula becomes a lot smoother. I definitely notice a difference on my lashes when I do this.

+1 to the zig zag motion. Also a vertical stroke (like with the wand pointing up) can break up a few sticky lashes. I like cover girl clump crusher.

What am I doing wrong? Mascara always leaves a black mark under my eyebrows

I wear makeup to work. After 8.5 hours, everything seems to hold up well except my mascara. When I get home, I always notice a black mark under my brow, exactly where my eyelashes touch my lid. What am I doing wrong?

I’ve tried various waterproof mascaras, and all leave the same mark? Is there a step I’m missing?

For reference, I don’t wear eyeshadow. After my liquid foundation and concealer, I do a light bake under my eyes and then set my face with a translucent pressed powder, before I finish with setting spray. After setting spray I apply my mascara.

Most times it's not the mascara-- if you're using any type of eye cream around your eyes, the emollient nature is breaking down the mascara formula. Either skip eye cream that high on brow bone or use a primer right before applying mascara

13 upvotes on reddit
ktg305 · 8 months ago

100% this /u/Correct-Armadillo146 especially for deep set eyes like ours, the issue is that something on the skin of your brow bone/lid is coming in contact with your mascara and dissolving it over time, leaving transfer residue.

Could be moisturizer, or just the natural oils of your skin. Using eyeshadow or a translucent powder on your brow bone should help tremendously.

2 upvotes on reddit
Correct-Armadillo146 · OP · 8 months ago

Yes okay! I do a whole lot of skin prep before makeup. I will be skipping the eye cream in the morning!

1 upvotes on reddit
Simple-Jelly1025 · 8 months ago

Even though you don’t wear eyeshadow, it sounds like you might have oily eyelids. Try a matte eyeshadow primer to keep the oils at bay. When the skin produces oil, it’ll make contact with the mascara and melt it down. This is what’s causing those black dots likely.

Most people will recommend Thrive but I prefer to be able to shop in person and Tarte is available at Sephora/Ulta.

Ignore all the other advice. Buy a tubing mascara. My favorite is the one by ELF. $7. It doesn’t smudge AT ALL. But even better, when you’re done with it, it comes off with just warm water. Holds a curl better than most mascaras, and again, no smudging (and I bartend long shifts while sweating buckets)

how to apply mascara correctly

Here are some key tips for applying mascara correctly:

  1. Start with Clean Lashes: Ensure your lashes are clean and free of any previous makeup. This helps the mascara adhere better.

  2. Use an Eyelash Curler: Curl your lashes before applying mascara to enhance their length and lift. Hold the curler at the base of your lashes for about 10 seconds.

  3. Choose the Right Mascara: Select a formula that suits your needs—lengthening, volumizing, or waterproof.

  4. Wipe Off Excess Product: Before applying, wipe the wand on the edge of the tube to remove excess mascara. This prevents clumping.

  5. Apply in a Zigzag Motion: Start at the base of your lashes and wiggle the wand back and forth as you move towards the tips. This helps to coat each lash evenly.

  6. Layer for Volume: Apply a second coat while the first is still wet for added volume. Avoid letting the first coat dry completely to prevent clumping.

  7. Focus on the Outer Corners: For a more dramatic look, apply extra mascara to the outer lashes to elongate the eyes.

  8. Don’t Forget the Lower Lashes: Use a smaller brush or the tip of the wand to apply mascara to your lower lashes for a balanced look.

  9. Clean Up Mistakes: If you get mascara on your eyelids, wait for it to dry and then gently flake it off with a cotton swab.

  10. Remove Mascara Properly: At the end of the day, use a gentle makeup remover or micellar water to avoid damaging your lashes.

Recommendation: Practice makes perfect! Take your time and experiment with different techniques to find what works best for you. If you're new to mascara, consider starting with a drugstore brand to practice before investing in higher-end products.
