How to Prevent Mascara from Smudging

TL;DR Use tubing mascara, set your under-eye area with powder, and consider using a lash primer.

Tubing Mascara

One of the most recommended solutions for preventing mascara smudging is to use tubing mascara. Unlike traditional mascaras, tubing mascaras form water-resistant tubes around each lash that do not smudge or flake throughout the day [2:3], [3:3], [4:5]. Popular tubing mascaras mentioned include ELF's Lash & Roll [1:2] and L'Oreal Double Extend [4:6], which are praised for their effectiveness in preventing smudges even during long shifts or allergy seasons [3:6].

Setting Powder

Applying setting powder beneath your eyes can help prevent mascara from smudging by keeping the area dry and reducing oil transfer [2:5], [5:3]. Many users recommend lightly applying pressed or loose powder over your concealer before applying mascara [3:1], [5:6]. This technique helps ensure that any potential smudging can be easily dusted away without disturbing your makeup.

Lash Primer

Using a lash primer before applying mascara can also help reduce smudging. Lash primers create a base that helps mascara adhere better to lashes, potentially reducing the likelihood of smudging [5:1], [5:11]. Many drugstore brands offer lash primers, making them accessible and affordable.

Waterproof Mascara

While waterproof mascara is often suggested as a solution, it's important to note that waterproof does not always mean smudge-proof [3:2]. Some users have found success with specific waterproof formulas like Heroine Make Long and Curl [5:5], but others suggest combining waterproof mascara with tubing mascara for optimal results [3:3].

Additional Tips

For those experiencing smudging due to masks, consider switching to a snugger face mask to minimize moisture affecting your mascara [2:1]. Additionally, using a setting spray after applying mascara can help lock it in place [1:1].

ORIGINAL POST

I’m 52 and you would think I know how to do make up but I guess I don’t. Because I have eye allergies, my eyes water a lot. I don’t wear make up a ton. But I would like to start wearing it more. I use a waterproof mascara various kinds honestly I love lash princess I know that it’s cheap But I do like it. I also just recently started using a lash primer before. I’ve been putting concealer under my eyes. I put the primer on. I let it dry for a couple minutes and then I applied just a little bit of mascara.

I put only a little bit of mascara on and within an hour it is always under my eyes. What’s the trick here? What am I doing wrong?

Ignore all the other advice. Buy a tubing mascara. My favorite is the one by ELF. $7. It doesn’t smudge AT ALL. But even better, when you’re done with it, it comes off with just warm water. Holds a curl better than most mascaras, and again, no smudging (and I bartend long shifts while sweating buckets)

What! You know how to do makeup? I'm 59 and still figuring out dry skin, chin hair, powder or not, sunscreen, eyebrows etc.

Ok, here's my no smudge. Chanel waterproof mascara but pick your own waterproof. After concealer and foundation, I swipe a tapered flat brush around and under eyes. Then a tiny bit of highlighter under and then UD All-nighter setting spray. Works great.

Wait for the mascara to dry and then add a setting spray (with your eyes closed). Move your eyelids while keeping them closed to woo distribute the product and then wait for it to dry. It should help.

Mascara smudges: why are they happening & how to prevent them?

Posted by rmctagg · in r/MakeupAddiction · 4 years ago

Recently (it's been happening for a year or so but I've worn makeup so few times since March 2020 that it took me a while to catch on), every mascara I've used (listed below), even one waterproof one, is smudging under my eyes just enough that it's making my undereye area look very dark, dull, and grey. This is happening every time I wear mascara, regardless of the skincare and makeup products that are on my lids and undereyes. I'm talking that I can bake the crap out of my already desert-dry skin and pair that with a waterproof mascara and this is still happening. This has never been a problem for me prior to the past year or so, but because it's happening with multiple mascaras/eye products, I don't know how to figure out what is different.

Does anybody have any ideas, application tips, or product recommendations that could help? Bonus points for cruelty free recommendations because I'm trying to be more conscious of this!

Mascaras I have experienced this with (* indicates I used to wear this mascara without issue):

  • L'Oreal Carbon Black*
  • L'Oreal Carbon Black Waterproof*
  • Benefit They're Real!*
  • NARS Climax
  • Lancome Hypnose Drama

Please let me know if you need more information to investigate! Thanks lovely people!

March 2020... it’s the masks. :(

It’s more noticeable when you wear glasses w/ a mask because you can see the steam firsthand, but it makes your mascara become all gross and moist. Maybe switch to a more snug face mask?

I never even considered the masks! I’ll have to put on mascara one day that I’m staying home so I can see if it still happens. Thanks for the idea!

Same here re tubing mascara. I have oily eyelids and watery eyes so always get panda eyes with regular mascara. I use No7 Stay Perfect. The mascara stays put until you wash it off. I use a magic eraser flannel and water only and it wipes off easily. I only very rarely get a fleck of mascara that has come off (say if I itched my eye) and it just flicks away. Much better than smudging and panda eyes.

Smudging had been an issue for me before I switched to tubing mascara. Maybelline snapscara is a decent drugstore one. I also like the one from thrive causemetics as well. They don't smudge and they come off easily when I'm ready to remove my makeup

Well my suggestion, you've already tried. All I do is tap some It Bye Bye Pores powder right under the lower lash line. It's a very finely milled, silky powder. That works for me. I don't powder further down due to "crinklies".

How to stop bottom lash mascara smudging under eyes?

Posted by juliafoxswife · in r/Makeup · 1 year ago

I love putting mascara on my bottom lashes I always feel so cute and then I leave the house and see myself in the reflection or a mirror in public and realise it’s smudged it’s so annoying and because I wear pressed powder under my eyes it doesn’t come off very well as it’s like gripping to the powder, the mascara I have is waterpoof too. Any tips?

What mascara are you using? Does it happen with multiple types or just this one? Unfortunately waterproof does not mean smudge proof which I learned the hard way.

TSO_AMTN · 1 year ago

Best way to avoid smudging is so use a tubing mascara.

I still go in with a waterproof mascara as it is wax based and keeps a better curl for upper lashes. Let that dry first. Apply a thin layer of tubing mascara to upper - especially the outer corners where there is contact when blinking or being expressive- and lower lashes.

No smudging.

Favourite tubing mascara: Mac Extended Play, Kevyn Aucoin Volume or Lengthening Mascara for their thin wand. Gets the bottom lashes really well.

I use coconut oil and a q-tip to wipe away mascara when it does that.

Elf Lash & Roll works great for me and doesn't smudge.

2 upvotes on reddit
Here_IGuess · 1 year ago

I lightly apply pressed powder over my under eye concealer. I make sure not to brush off any excess powder until after I finish applying mascara. If I do get any spots while applying it, then I can normally dust the mascara away or use a qtip & lightly wipe it away without disturbing the concealer.

My lashes are long, so I try to make sure that I'm using very light pressure when applying bottom mascara. That way, the tips of my lashes are less likely to brush my skin before the mascara dries. Almost like I'm trying to glide the mascara on the top of the individual lashes compared to brushing the wand through them. Trying not to blink for a few seconds helps.

You could try one of those mascara guards or use a card during application jic.

If you're getting random smudging throughout the day, then you probably need to change your mascara formula.

Preventing mascara from smudging

Whenever I wear mascara, the mascara on my top lashes smudges on to my lower eyelid and I wind up with raccoon eyes after a few hours. Any suggestions for keeping my mascara in place?

Background: I have super long, curly eyelashes, which are clearly a blessing and a curse. I also wear contacts and have some dry eye problems, so I blink more than most people. I only use mascara on my upper lashes.

Have you ever considered tubing mascara? Unlike conventional mascaras which paint lashes with pigment, tubing mascaras create water-resistant, tube-like enclosures around each individual lash. Instead of flaking or smudging throughout the day, these "tubes" slide off with warm water and some gentle pressure — no makeup remover required!

L’Oréal has a pretty decent one. Tip: check out your Sunday paper for L’Oréal coupons for an even better deal!

Hope this helps!

I've been using L'Oreal Double Extend - it's a tubing mascara and it Does. Not. Smudge. Not at all. It doesn't melt when you take it off - no racoon eyes - and comes off in pieces, no dissolving. I've cried my eyes out with it on - didn't budge. And only $9-$10. Highly recommend it.

It makes a big difference whether or not I set my undereye with powder. When I don’t set, especially in the heat, my mascara is just everywhere.

I second this! If I don’t do eyeshadow, and just go with mascara, I’ll still use a primer and powder to set my eyelids so the oil won’t break up my mascara.

I use the same one. I think it's sold in such a small tube because it seems to dry out quicker than normal mascara. I usually buy a new tube before using it all because it gets too clumpy after awhile and I prefer a more natural look. I wait for it to go on sale at CVS then buy a couple :)

I'm not familiar with that mascara, but you can try making sure to set super well with powder right beneath your eyes where it smudges. The mascara will be less likely to smudge onto a dry area.

Eyeliner/mascara is always coming onto undereye - what do I need to do?

Posted by imminentappeal · in r/MakeupAddiction · 5 months ago

I always leave my house liking my eye makeup, but by the next few hours, I feel like it’s always smudged and under my eyes. How do I prevent this during the application?

Routine:

  • Bobbi Brown face primer
  • Milk Makeup hydrogrip eye primer
  • Rare Beauty undereye brightener
  • Glossier stretch concealer
  • Dust Huda Beauty loose powder on lids and under eyes
  • Makeup by Mario pencil liner
  • Kiss Me Heroine mascara

I’m not sure if any of the primers/powders are helping, if my application is off, or if I just need new products!

I used to use a lot of different primers with cakey and smudged results, and I think I was just overdoing it. I eventually found that using only foundation, high coverage concealer under the eyes and on the eyelids, and setting powder (sometimed setting spray) provides a very smudgeproof base for both face and (waterproof) eye products.

It could also be that you have watery eyes, which could have various explanations (problems with eyesight, glasses vs lenses, allergies to pollen or something in the eye makeup, etc)

Are you wearing waterproof? That may help, you might just have kind of watery eyes.

2 upvotes on reddit

If that's Vitamin Enriched Face Base...check the ingredients. I use oils to take off my makeup. Product migrates to places where you didn't put it. That's why I have zero crows feet at 45 and got rid of a large skin flap on my eye corner even though I can't put my tretinoin directly there, it migrates.

In my personal opinion that's way too much stuff under your eyes. That's 5 layers of product and that's not counting if you put some foundation up there too.

They're not exactly long-wear products either. I just look at that and see "grease, unnecessary watery eye primer with too many ingredients, grease and more grease". Stretch concealer is...very emollient.

If you insist upon using all that you need things specifically marketed as long-wear/widely regarded as unflappable. Mario ain't that. This is quite subjective on what is like, budge-proof 'cos it depends on the person and there's plenty of competition for HG eyeliners but I've never seen Mario anywhere near mentioned. Urban Decay 24 Hour, cheaper Sephora 12 Hr Waterproof, gel eyeliners usually. Never Kohl.

For mascara look for highly rated waterproof formula or a tubing mascara. Despite what people say KissMe it's not a fully-blown tubing as such and it also depends if you pick the right one. Not all of their mascaras are the film ones. If you like the Isehan you could just use a different mascara on your lower lashes.

How to minimize smudging under eyes

Posted by [deleted] · in r/beauty · 4 years ago

I know this has probably been solved time and time again but I swear I've tried everything to minimize mascara smudging underneath my eyes.

Some things I've tried:

  • Waterproof mascara
  • No mascara at all on bottom lash line (sometimes okay but when doing full glam I would love to have a solution for wearing mascara there)
  • Powder underneath eyes
  • No face makeup underneath eyes (I heard having a "tacky" surface can encourage transfer)

Most times I can just swipe a Q-tip really quickly and solve it but that can (1) erase any shadow/makeup or (2) just be inconvenient if I'm not able to go to the bathroom or check myself regularly.

Some other context: when I smile, the skin underneath my eyes can actually touch my top eyelashes depending on how hard I'm smiling (which is why sometimes not wearing mascara on my bottom lash line doesn't always solve this issue).

Any techniques you guys try for this? Any tried and true mascara brands??

edit: something else to add, I wear false lashes and don't curl my lashes prior as I have hooded eyes so curling lashes prior makes it really difficult for me to apply false lashes (might just be a me problem) and so I only put on enough mascara on my top lashes to blend my real lashes to the false ones.

I also have this problem! Although I don’t wear falsies but every mascara smudges on me (I have very straight lashes so they touch my undereye regularly). I found that not using setting spray after mascara helps. Also, different ‘waterproof’ formulas perform very differently. Essence waterproof mascara smudges crazy on me, Lancôme/Marc Jacobs ones smudge a little bit. I’m trying lash paradise from L’Oréal now and it seems ok. The one I’m most impressed is the waterproof one from Buxom, it doesn’t budge even I went swimming. But the effect from Buxom is not as dramatic as I wish, so I’m still searching for the “perfect” mascara.

I use dinoplatz mascara from Too Cool For School. I have used it for 5 years because before that all other mascara smudged. This stays on even through crying and it also comes off easy. Splash warm water on your face a few times, gentle rub the finest bit of any non-oil based face wash and then glide off the mascara with your fingers. It just pulls right off and doesn’t damage your lashes.

Blinc makes the one I use. Practice a bit - you can’t easily do a second coat with tubing mascara, though for me it’s thickening enough that one coat is fine. If you use a lash curler, curl before using tubing.

The first time I washed off tubing mascara, I freaked because I thought my eyelashes were all falling out. It was just the “tubes,” which look like lashes.

I still have this problem but I noticed it is usually because of my skincare/eye care. I often wear heavy creams around my eyes because of eczema. If i don’t wait long enough for the product to absorb or wipe it off my lashes thoroughly before applying mascara then it is hopeless and it just smudges until it is all gone. Sometimes my SPF will do the same thing. Maybe look into what your skincare?

It’s an eye shape thing, I reckon (my eyes are a similar shape). I use tubing mascara and also powder under my eyes. Lasts about 6-8 hours before I start looking raccoony.

👆This is the answer. I’ve had raccoon eyes from mascara (even waterproof ones) for 40+ years. I saw tubing mascara recommended here and picked some up at Sephora (Caliray “Come Hell or High Water”).

My life is forever changed. No smudges. Even after sleeping in it 😬. I can wear mascara on my lower lashes for the first time ever. It’s amazing.

Caliray’s mascara at Sephora is my favorite tubing mascara! I’ve had the smudging problem forever and that one doesn’t smudge.

Please try to never sleep with eye makeup on, I know you probably don’t do it intentionally but neither did I but it gave me styes on my eyes that needed to be surgically removed.

Mascara keeps smudging

Posted by specsl · in r/Makeup · 2 months ago

Anytime I wear mascara it always smudges under my eyes fairly quickly (like within an hour). I’ve tried both waterproof and non waterproof mascara, I don’t rub my eyes and I’ve even had a lash lift. I don’t wear eyeliner so I know it’s not that but I just can’t figure out how it keeps smudging under my eyes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It's due to oily eyelids (both lower and upper). Like others suggested, tubing mascara.

Absolutely all of this. Caliray is fantastic, and Glossier is a nice one as well, a bit more natural looking with a thinner formula. I’ve also tried and loved Tartelette XL, KVD Full Sleeve, and Blinc. Tubing mascara will solve your problem.

Yes, as others have said, tubing mascara. I love Kevyn Aucoin.

Get tubing mascara, it does not smudge.

Tubing mascara is the only “advance” in makeup I can think of since the 80’s.

Formulas get more luxurious or better but tubing mascara is a whole new level up from any other mascara.

Try Trish McEvoy lash curling tubular mascara. I no longer have that problem since I started using this. It is also better for your eyes than other mascaras, according to my eye doctor who recommended this.

how to prevent mascara from smudging?

Here are some effective tips to prevent mascara from smudging:

  1. Choose the Right Formula:

    • Opt for waterproof mascara, which is less likely to smudge due to its water-resistant properties.
    • Consider smudge-proof formulas specifically designed to resist smearing.
  2. Apply a Primer:

    • Use an eyelash primer before applying mascara. This can help create a barrier and improve the longevity of your mascara.
  3. Set with Powder:

    • Lightly dust translucent powder on your eyelids and under your eyes after applying concealer. This helps absorb excess moisture and oil.
  4. Avoid Over-Application:

    • Apply mascara in thin layers rather than piling it on. This reduces the chance of it transferring to your skin.
  5. Use a Setting Spray:

    • Finish your makeup routine with a setting spray designed to lock in your look and prevent smudging.
  6. Be Mindful of Eye Creams:

    • If you use eye creams, allow them to fully absorb before applying mascara to avoid excess moisture that can lead to smudging.
  7. Check for Transfer:

    • After applying mascara, look up and check for any transfer on your eyelids. If you see any, gently wipe it away before it sets.

Recommendation: If you frequently experience smudging, consider trying a high-quality waterproof mascara like Maybelline's Lash Sensational Waterproof or Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof. These formulas are well-reviewed for their staying power and resistance to smudging.
