How to Remove Mascara Without Damaging Lashes

TL;DR Use oil-based cleansers or cleansing balms, consider tubing mascara for easy removal, and avoid excessive rubbing.

Oil-Based Cleansers and Balms

Many users recommend using oil-based cleansers or cleansing balms as a gentle and effective method for removing mascara. These products help dissolve the mascara without requiring harsh scrubbing, which can lead to lash loss [1:2][2:1][3:5]. Applying the oil or balm directly onto your lashes and gently massaging it in allows the mascara to break down, making it easier to wash away with a regular cleanser [2:4][4:6].

Tubing Mascara

Tubing mascara is a popular alternative that many users swear by for its ease of removal. This type of mascara forms tiny tubes around each lash and can be removed with just warm water and light pressure [2:5][3:4]. Brands like Thrive and Heimish offer tubing mascaras that don't smudge during the day and slide off effortlessly at night [5:2].

Gentle Techniques

To minimize lash damage, it's crucial to use gentle techniques when removing mascara. Soaking a cotton pad with micellar water or an oil-based cleanser and holding it against your closed eyelid for several seconds can help soften the mascara before wiping it away [2:2][4:3]. Avoid vigorous rubbing or pulling, as this can irritate the skin and cause lash loss [4:5].

Alternative Oils

For those who prefer natural alternatives, oils such as coconut or jojoba oil can be used to remove mascara gently. Apply the oil to your lashes and wipe it off with a warm, wet washcloth [4:2][5:3]. These oils are effective at breaking down makeup while being gentle on the skin and lashes.

Product Recommendations

Several users have recommended specific products that work well for removing mascara. The Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Remover Cleansing Balm is praised for its effectiveness and gentleness [3:9]. Clinique's makeup remover fluid combined with wipes is another option that users find effective [4:1]. Additionally, brands like Elf, Clinique, and Charlotte Tilbury offer cleansing balms that are highly regarded [5:5].

ORIGINAL POST

My lashes are both thick and I have a lot of them, so currently I use micellar water on a cotton pad and kind of scrub them, pushing them from the bottom against my eyelid to get all the mascara off.

however, I’ve also been battling with dark circles and I saw another post saying that rubbing your eyes too hard could be the cause as you can break capillaries.

I don’t go uncomfortably hard and I’m not pushing directly on my under eye, but just wanted to know is there any other ways to remove your mascara effectively?

Cleansing oil or balm around your eyes takes most of it off. Then second wash with regular face wash!

I use an oil cleanser, get it on my fingertips and gently rolly lashes between my fingers.

When I use some sort of cotton pad or towel I find I always end up pulling some lashes out. And with this method I have just enough on my lashes I can let it sit for a minute if I need to without as much worry of the cleanser bleeding into my eyes

Asian beauty brands have mascara removers that look like a tube of mascara. You brush on the clear liquid, wait about 30s/1 minute then will wipe away with micellar or any cleanser with no need to scrub or rub. About £5/$5 and a tube lasts ages.

How to take off mascara without ripping out eyelashes?

Posted by sussske · in r/Makeup · 3 years ago

As the title suggests, I am looking for tips on how to remove mascara without damaging my eyelashes. I wear mascara daily and right now I just use a cotton pad and some micellar water to remove it. Every night I remove my mascara, I at least rip out one or two eyelashes. I'm afraid that if I keep this going that my eyelashes will appear less full and that they'll just look bad.

I've tried different techniques, if I wipe it off gently then I feel like the mascara isn't properly cleaned off.

Thanks for your help.

I also use micellar water to remove mascara but I'll "soak" my lashes with the cotton pad for about 10 seconds and then and rub them ever so slightly. Repeat until all the mascara is gone.

Use oil, put it on a pad and place it on your lashes and wiggle it around gently and leave it for a bit, with an oil you can also use your fingers I’ve found that to be far more gentle, just gently rub your eyes and it should be good to come off. Any oil tbh, I use olive

Double cleansing, using a oil cleanser first and then your regular cleanser, should work. Use the oil cleanser on your whole (dry) face, massaging it into your skin and eye makeup. Then add some water, massaging it again, before rinsing it off. Then proceed with your normal cleanser. The oil breaks down your makeup and mascara, and anything left after rinsing is loose enough for your cleanser to easily wash away. If you’re using waterproof mascara (which is not recommended for everyday btw) I would recommend soaking a cotton pad with micellar water and soaking the lashes for 30 seconds before double cleansing. Same goes for heavy makeup (glitter, Halloween makeup, etc). Take your time and don’t rush the removal.

Also, remember that eyelashes are hair. Just like you lose some hairs during the day, it’s normal for lashes to loosen and fall out. As long as you’re not getting thin spots or more than one or two, you should be ok.

Wear tubing mascara. Among its many other benefits, it just… comes off at the end of the day. No smudges ever. I use Heimish Dailism Smudge Stop mascara but any tubing mascara will be dead simple to remove.

I use Cleansing balm, an oil based cleaner first, as my makeup remover, and then use a face wash.

You your loosing eyelashes, the cotton round is too aggressive and micellar not effective enough.

If this doesn't help, then start looking at your mascara, and perhaps it's time to try a different type.

And although I find it's not as buildable, tubing mascara is a great option on occasion, as it washes away with just water, and doesn't smear or smudge.

How are you removing your mascara?

Posted by Squeak_Stormborn · in r/beauty · 2 months ago

That's it.

I'm so fed up of the nightly struggle, so I stopped wearing it. Wipes hurt my eyes. Every remover I've tried is rubbish. Washing my face properly over the sink is a chore. So I generally have a whole shower just to remove my mascara. This cannot be the most efficient solution

Edit: Thank you for all the tips. I won't respond to each individual one but I am reading them all and appreciate you taking the time to comment.

Lots of product recommendations here - I will be trying a lot of these!

I have tried all the obvious solutions. I have excessively sensitive eyes (TED) so I think I may just be asking too much from a product. I don't want to have to wipe at my eyes more than once or twice. I think my current solution of an oil based eye make up remover, washed off in the shower with face wash, is still the best for me - even if really inconvenient.

Tubing mascara. Warm water gently sweeps the mascara off your lashes.

227 upvotes on reddit
sensibly_silly · 2 months ago

This is the way. Tubing mascara changed my life, I’m an oily girly and I used to wear waterproof “long wearing” mascaras that stamped my oily eyelids no matter how much I blotted and powdered yet were somehow still terribly difficult to completely remove. Ugh.

But tubing mascara somehow withstands my oily skin and comes off like a dream, but only when I want it to.

Edit to add: and for those worried about water resistance, tubing mascara really does only come off with the moisture + light pressure combo—sweating in the summer heat or shedding a few tears won’t cause it to come off as long as you don’t touch it. (Maybe a full on torrential rain or ugly cry, but not normal every day moisture).

Mascara removal technique without losing your lashes?

Posted by messyredemptions · in r/makeuptips · 2 years ago

Hi everyone, please help me figure out how to be a bit nicer to my eyes lol--I'm accidentally pulling out eyelashes every time I try to clean off my eye makeup with a wet cotton pad!

Every time I go to remove eyeliner and mascara with a cotton makeup pad I start losing several eyelashes, maybe because I'm being a little too rough but it's really difficult not to.

But the mascara and eyeliner I'm using just won't really come off even though they're not waterproof and regardless of me using witch hazel or water on the cotton pad.

And it feels way too abrasive for my eyelids to be wiping it off with a cotton pad too.

Are there any other techniques or tips for removing eye makeup without literally pulling your lashes out in order to get all the residue off?

Thank you in advance!

Jojoba/coconut oil. Take a good amount and rub it in, and then wipe it all off with a warm wet washcloth.

I use waterproof products so it’s a pain to take off since it hardens, but oil does the trick every time. Removes everything but is gentle enough to keep everything intact. Should work even more easily with products that aren’t waterproof since they’re easier to remove anyway.

[Edit: I see a lot of people recommending makeup remover, and I honestly have to disagree with that. Not only can that get expensive along with running out quickly, but most makeup removers in my experience have been nowhere as effective or gentle and I end up still losing lashes—along with my skin either being dried out or irritated/itchy from whatever ingredients are in there. Oil will last you longer, absorb the product, and be a lot nicer to your skin/lashes in my experience.]

Mostly it’s just time. I cut a cotton round in half and wet both halves with micellar water and hold them up over my eyes and I wait. Don’t rub or you’ll irritate the skin and pull out the lashes. Give it time to dissolve the mascara/liner.

5 upvotes on reddit
Way2Old4ThisIsh · 2 years ago

This is what I do. Micellar water is a godsend, but you gotta be patient. Wet the cotton pad, gently press it against your eyelid and wait a few moments to let it sink in before starting to remove the make-up.

I still sometimes have to go back and get along the lash line, especially if I used liquid liner, and under my eye for those last boots of mascara (remember to be gentle! Your eyes are very sensitive and tugging or rubbing isn't good for them), but overall I've had a great experience.

I follow up by washing my face with a mild cleanser to get any last bits of makeup fully off.

If you want to use something meant for your face I’ve been loving the naturium makeup removing balm. Doesn’t sting your eyes at all. It’s light purple and I got it at target! Just make sure you follow up with a water based cleanser after.

Apparently elf makes a makeup removing balm too, but I’ve never used it.

The milk makeup waterproof makeup remover (idk what it’s called but it’s literally white and opaque) also gets everything off easily, but again you definitely need a water based cleanser after to get the oil off of your skin.

The easiest thing to do is buy a cleansing balm! I love my heimish cleansing balm, it’s $15 on Amazon I think and lasts me forever. I just use a small amount and it takes everything off, and I use very waterproof mascara and eyeliner. Liquid lipstick slides right off too it’s amazing. I used oil to remove my eye makeup before but honestly it feels gross to me and I still had to like scrub it off bc my mascara is very tough and stays. But cleansing balm is perfect for makeup removal so I highly recommend it.

Grab any makeup removing wipes and makeup remover fluid. I use Clinique brand for both because they work very well and Ulta has them half off several times per year. Open the wipes and dump a couple glugs of the fluid in there. Mash the wipes around to ensure the fluid is evenly incorporated. When you remove your mascara, take a wipe and press it to your eyes. Hold it there for a minute to soften stuff up. Then gently wipe it away! Super easy!

Micellar water is rubbish, it literally does nothing. You need an oil based cleaner.

I use Vaseline to remove mascara and stay-put lipstick, and for everything else I use Johnson’s Top-to-Toe baby wash.

Even if you look in your panty and use whatever oil you find there to remove your mascara, it will do a better job than Micellar Water, which I think is a big con.

Put the remover on a cotton pad and hold the cotton pad firmly against your eye without rubbing it or moving it. Hold it against the eye like that for at least 30 seconds before you try to rub the mascara off. You have to give the remover time to dissolve the mascara before you wipe it off.

Yes, this! I also kind of gently squeeze/sandwich the lashes between the cotton pad and oil to get the mascara on the bottom of the lash dissolved Before gently pulling the mascara off the same way. Works everytime. Even for the lancome hypnose waterproof mascara which you can literally swim with. I dont think OP let's it dissolve long enough. Hopefully this works!

If you're only losing 2-3 eyelashes every time that's probably just a normal amount. You want to lose those lashes because they're already loose, and if you don't pull them out when you're removing your makeup than they just fall off throughout the day and possibly go into your eye.

You don't need to be concerned about losing a couple of eyelashes - they are hairs like anywhere else on your body and they fall out periodically.

You could try using the cleansing oil directly on your skin without a cotton pad? It might be more gentle and effective to do that.

BWT, how are we removing mascara from our eyes without losing eyelashes in the process?

Posted by Separate_Donkey8007 · in r/bitcheswithtaste · 5 months ago

Hi guys! I'm currently trying to find the best way to remove my mascara - I always end up losing ~3-4 lashes every time I do, and given that I wear makeup daily (I work two jobs that both require me to be in presentable condition) that's a lot of lashes to lose!

For my skincare routine, I double cleanse with Cocokind Oil-to-milk cleanser to break down my makeup, and then Glossier Cleanser Concentrate to remove the residue/actually clean my face. I'm gentle when using the soaps around my eyes, but I'm never fully successful at removing all of my mascara using just these two products, and if I scrub at my eyes, I lose lashes. I follow up with a micellar water where I (you guessed it!) also lose lashes.

I know that hair loss of any kind is normal, but I would love to hear some tips and tricks to more effectively remove my mascara to preserve my lashes. Thanks!

mascara help

Posted by fmpy · in r/Makeup · 19 days ago

Hoping this group can help fix a seemingly unsolvable issue. I LOVE wearing mascara, but in the past 5 years I've developed this issue where I cannot get it all off and I wake up with little bits of it in my eyes. This has caused irritation and some pretty bad styes. I've tried every tubing mascara out there, and I have the same issue with those as well (currently using Merit tubing). I've tried using a makeup eraser, micellar water, coconut oil, cleansing oil, cleansing balms, makeup wipes, eye makeup remover, etc. What am I doing wrong? Or has the formula changed so drastically? Back in the day I could wear any mascara (other than the fiber ones) and have zero issues. I'd rotate between Diorshow, Tarte, Marc Jacobs and Clinique and have consistently great lashes and zero issue with removal. Now I can't wear any of those, and everything I try is causing this issue... In the past 6 months alone I've tried Merit tubing, Trish McAvoy tubing, Loreal tubing, Loreal non-tubing, both Tarte tubing, Hourglass tubing, Thrive and two different Clinique mascaras. Please tell me what I need to do! Thanks!

For tubing mascara you should only need water to remove it. I like to gentle splash my lashes a few times and then gently rub the tubes away. Then after that, go in with your your facial cleanser and gently scrub your eyes and see if that helps.

I tried that last night with the Merit and my eyes are still irritated today

The only thing I can think of is that you’re developing an allergy to something in the mascara then. Even if there’s leftover bits from not fully removing it shouldn’t lead to irritation and styes as it’s meant to be worn on the eyes.

How do you use cleansing oil? You’re supposed to massage it for a time and use bit of water to emulsify the oil. This method works well with me and I only use waterproof mascara for my stubborn straight lashes.

that's what I've done... even with a double/triple cleanse I can't get all of the oil off

That’s odd. All my tubing mascaras literally slide right off with water. I hope you find a solution.

How often are you getting the styes? I was having this issue recently so I stopped wearing mascara completely and the styes have stopped. Honestly I don’t think it’s the makeup that’s being left behind, I think it’s all the mascara. Makeup companies keep changing their formulas to keep up with the “clean beauty” standards so they have taken all of the parabens out which are preservatives that keep the makeup from growing bacteria. Just my theory though.

that makes sense! a few years ago I was getting them fairly regularly and then I didn't for a while. Pretty certain this last one was caused by lash serum but it was bad - a double stye that took 3 months, antibiotics and a shot to clear.

I’m so sorry you went through that. Styes are horrible. But yes I definitely think it’s all because of all the makeup reformulations lately. And for that reason I haven’t been wearing any makeup. It sucks cause I LOVE makeup but I also can’t stand styes lol.

Here are the 2 methods that worked for me (do not have to be done together):

  1. Oil cleansing balm. Massage it into your lashes with your eyes closed (no water). Then look up and really get your lower lashes. After most of the mascara is removed, add a little bit of water to your hands and go over the area again to emulsify the oil. Rinse & you’re done.

  2. Micellar water + waterproof mascara. It HAS to be one formulated for waterproof mascara specifically). Wet a cotton pad (bonus points for reusable ones) and press gently to your closed eye for 10-15 seconds. Then start wiping the mascara off your lashes with the pad. Repeat for lower lash line. Rinse.

Cleansing balm may be the more gentler option if you have sensitive skin.

Hope this helps!

How do you remove mascara without product getting in your eyes?

Posted by AllZeSaucFromZeFauc · in r/Makeup · 2 years ago

Even if I do it with my eyes closed, removers still get in my eye and I have blurry vision until it flushes out. It also usually stings but I think I also just have sensitive eyes.

I use washable/reusable makeup remover pads (mine are true earth brand) and micellar water. I wet the pad, then lightly press on my lashes a few seconds before wiping downward. I then pick a clean edge and run it unfree my lower lashes. Then, I do the rest of my face wash routine and moisturize as usual. If I use disposable makeup wipes my eyes burn and are blurry, and water just doesn’t get all my Bad Gal Bang mascara off.

I use eye makeup remover. I can use Lancome or the grocery store brand. I use either flat disposable cotton pieces or my reusable cloth ones. No problems...

Another vote for micellar water; I like Bioderma. But I use Olay unscented cleansing wipes first. I close my eyes and hold the wipe in place for a minute or so. It dissolves every mascara in my arsenal, even my OG HG Bad Gal Bang. I’ll then swipe with micellar water as a final cleansing step. The wipes are a bit pricey for everyday use, but the trade-offs of no blurry vision and no stinging eyes are worth it to me.

how to remove mascara without damaging lashes

Key Considerations for Removing Mascara Safely

  1. Choose the Right Remover: Use a gentle eye makeup remover, preferably oil-based or micellar water, as they effectively dissolve mascara without harsh rubbing.

  2. Avoid Rubbing: Rubbing can damage lashes and irritate the delicate skin around the eyes. Instead, gently press a cotton pad soaked in remover against your lashes for a few seconds to loosen the mascara.

  3. Use a Soft Touch: With a clean cotton pad or tissue, gently wipe away the mascara in a downward motion, following the direction of your lashes.

  4. Be Mindful of Waterproof Formulas: If you're using waterproof mascara, you may need a specific waterproof makeup remover, as regular removers may not be effective.

  5. Moisturize After Removal: Consider applying a nourishing eye cream or castor oil to your lashes after removal to keep them hydrated and healthy.

Recommendation: For a gentle and effective option, try using Bifesta Micellar Cleansing Water or Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover. Both are known for their ability to remove mascara without excessive rubbing, helping to protect your lashes. Always remember to be gentle and patient during the removal process!
