How to Blur Your Background on Zoom

TL;DR To blur your background in Zoom, navigate to Settings > Background & Effects > Virtual Backgrounds and select "Blur". Ensure your Zoom app is updated and your device meets the necessary system requirements.

Enabling Background Blur

To enable the background blur feature in Zoom, go to Settings, then Background & Effects, and under Virtual Backgrounds, you should see an option labeled "Blur" next to "None" [3:1]. This feature allows you to fuzz out everything behind you during a call, providing privacy or reducing distractions.

System Requirements and Updates

The availability of the blur feature can depend on your device's specifications. Some users have reported issues with the blur option not appearing despite having the latest Zoom update. This could be due to hardware limitations, such as older camera models which may not support this feature [2:6]. It's important to ensure that your system meets Zoom's requirements for virtual backgrounds, which include specific processor capabilities [3].

Alternative Solutions

If the blur option is unavailable, consider using other features like "portrait lighting" for a slight blur effect [1:1]. This setting can be found in the video settings and provides a soft blur without fully obscuring the background [1:4]. Additionally, some macOS devices offer built-in camera effects that might provide similar results [4:4].

Troubleshooting and Support

If you're experiencing persistent issues with enabling background blur, it might be helpful to consult Zoom's support resources or community forums. Users have shared various experiences and solutions, such as ensuring all related settings are correctly configured and checking for any software conflicts [4:5]. Joining communities like the r/Zoom Discord can also provide additional support and insights from fellow users [3:3].

ORIGINAL POST

I changed computers and I cannot for the life of me remember how I enabled a slight blurring of the background. Just enough so you can't see my monitors reflecting in the diplomas on the wall behind me. Attendees don't need to know I'm checking e-mail or playing games :)

I am NOT referring to "blur my background."

Solution: Turn on "portrait lighting."

New Virtual Background Blur Feature Missing

Posted by kosikutioner · in r/Zoom · 4 years ago

The new Zoom feature to just blur your background in the virtual background tab shows up for me on my PC, and many of my friends. But a handful it doesn't appear. They are definitely on the newest update. I can't find any info from Zoom support on the feature being limited in roll out.

Does anyone have any experience in this, or a trick to getting it to appear? Thanks.

I updated to v5.6.5 but there is no option for blur in virtual backgrounds still. It must have to do with the specs of my system.

I think this is probably because of your camera model, it may be a old one meaning that you need to buy a good camera. I was also having the same problem with my old logitech c270 until I bought a new camera logitech c930e.

Blur background in Zoom?

Posted by RepresentativeBat798 · in r/Zoom · 2 years ago

Title has it, just wondering how to Blur background in Zoom calls. I don't have Zoom Pro, is that the issue? Just wondering how to fuzz out everything behind me, shouldn't seem to be that hard, but it's not in the Settings>Background & Effects>Virtual Backgrounds.

I checked the Zoom requirements, and it seems my PC fits the bill, matching the AMD 8 logical cores @ 2.0 GHz or higher... or is the 6G referring to only 6 graphical cores? Are those the logical cores? If so, I guess that is probably the issue.

Settings: Background & Effects: Virtual Backgrounds tab: scroll to the top - next to the top left which says "None" is "Blur". Click "Blur".

I am not a supporter of Zoom. Zoom cheated me of my Business plan subscription. Be aware that they will ban you, then when you appeal, they will find no wrongdoing because you didn't do nothing, but then reinstate you as a free account losing access to the paid Business plan subscription.

HELP! Zoom is blurring my background even though the setting is turned of...

Posted by Academic_Apricot7122 · in r/Zoom · 4 months ago

Hey there. I want to be able to use OBS while performing zoom calls to show slide presentations. Unfortunately It seems like it has this "auto-Blur" for the background that is meant to enhance the image. Unfortunately the blur is too intense and It causes my slide show to not be readable. I have TURNED OFF blurred background. Here is a Loom Video showing the issue: https://www.loom.com/share/a71782533ac04f77b9d252bb6ca767ff?sid=13df2648-dcc1-438b-b951-c940c5466498
I have tried to contact zoom directly, but since I have the free version, It appears I cannot get past the chat bot lol. Thank you so much in advance!

Can you change/blur background in zoom meetings?

Posted by PotatoJam89 · in r/Zoom · 8 months ago

I have to use zoom meetings in a few days (haven't used for don't know how long) for some work thing. I'm not the host, I will only receive an invite for the meeting. Is there any way to change or blur my background? Through zoom itself, or maybe some other app?

Do all Zoom meetings allow the participants to blur their background or add a background?

Backgrounds are an option which admins can allow or not allow. Some hosts disable that because it has been used to show dicks.

Blur is a option that is available to all users. But, be careful to not move forward and backward much if you want to completely hide your bedroom much because the blur feature is imperfect in figuring out what is background and what is foreground.

As others mentioned it can be admin disabled.

But also your device must support the functionality.

If your admins disable the option, use a 3rd party app that enables backgrounds and choose that app as your camera input in Zoom.

It is likely because of the camera. A lot of cameras that are room based and not focused on one person don’t have a blur feature. My son has this issue with his wide camera on the PC.

It is also possible that it’s just not built into the tv app - but I’d point more so to the top reason since the camera is picking up a wider area.

Background blurred even with setting off

Posted by tungstenmamba · in r/Zoom · 3 years ago

I cannot for the life of me figure out why my background is still blurred even though the setting (and all video settings) are turned off in zoom. I am on an M1 Mac Mini using a Logi Brio 4K webcam. In the Logi desktop app video preview, my background is crisp and clear, yet on zoom my background is still being blurred. It was not always like this, started a few months ago.

I also confirmed with other video apps like the native Photo Booth app and Google Meet, video there is crisp.

Is there some hidden setting for additional automatic background blur?

Edit: I submitted a ticket to Zoom support, and they auto close the ticket after about 1 second. Resubmitted multiple times, same thing. I think the inclusion of the keyword "background" and "blurred" sets off their internal system to close tickets like that so as not to waste support hours on simple fixes. How utterly stupid.

Solved for me: What was happening for me is that Mac was doing it with this drop down with "studio light" AND Zoom was doing it with "portrait lighting". I kept turning one off but not the other, because I thought they were the same zoom setting. Turning BOTH off finally got me a normal, unbackground-blurred camera feed.

Hey! I solved it! This thing about my video on Zoom showed my background gloomy and blurred, but the settings on my Zoom were without a BLUR option. I accidentally clicked on something this morning that popped up asking if I would like to change my video settings, and the fact is it was not Zoom's fault but that I was using my "FaceTime camera." What a nightmare it was!!!!! The portrait option was the culprit, not the background and effects setting on NONE BLUR.

I was having this trouble on a Dell laptop with a Logitech webcam. The issue WAS in Zoom and I just fixed it! It has to do with Portrait Lighing within the Zoom app. Here is how I fixed it. When in a Zoom meeting, I clicked on the arrow next to/associated with Video. Then I chose Adjust Background & Effects, which defaults to opening to the Virtual Backgrounds. I clicked on the Video tab, which was to the left of the Virtual Backgrounds tab. In the Background & Effects section Portrait Lighting was the fourth box listed under Video. I unchecked the box and the blur went away.

How to blur your background on Zoom

Here are the steps to blur your background on Zoom:

  1. Open Zoom: Start the Zoom application on your computer.

  2. Go to Settings: Click on your profile picture in the top right corner, then select "Settings."

  3. Select Background & Filters: In the left sidebar, click on "Background & Filters."

  4. Choose Blur: Under the "Virtual Background" section, you will see options for backgrounds. Select the "Blur" option. This will blur everything behind you while keeping you in focus.

  5. Test Your Setup: Join a meeting to see how the blurred background looks. Adjust your position and lighting if necessary for the best effect.

Key Considerations:

  • Lighting: Ensure you have good lighting on your face to enhance the clarity of your image against the blurred background.

  • Background: A cluttered background may not blur as effectively, so try to have a simple or solid-colored background for the best results.

  • System Requirements: Make sure your device meets Zoom's system requirements for virtual backgrounds, as older devices may not support this feature.

Recommendation: Blurring your background is a great way to maintain privacy and minimize distractions during meetings. It helps keep the focus on you, especially in professional settings.
