TL;DR Create a large enclosed box in the sky with water channels leading to a drop chamber. Mobs spawn, fall, and are weakened for easy collection or elimination.
Basic Design Principles
To build a simple mob grinder, start by constructing a large closed-off box high above the ground where mobs can spawn. Inside this box, create platforms for mobs to spawn on, typically arranged in a cross or plus shape [3:1]. Water streams should be set up to push mobs towards a central hole that leads to a drop chamber. The drop should be deep enough (around 25 blocks) to leave mobs with half a heart of health, making them easy to kill
[3:2].
Water Channels and Platforms
Design the interior with four 8x8 platforms separated by two-block-wide channels filled with water sources at the edges. These water streams will naturally flow towards the center, stopping just before a 2x2 drop area [3:2]. This setup ensures that mobs are efficiently funneled into the drop chamber. You can add multiple vertical layers to increase efficiency, though returns may diminish with each additional layer
[3:2].
Utilizing Mob Spawners
If you find a mob spawner, dig out a flat space below it and direct mobs using water streams to a drop-off area. A typical design involves an 8-block-long channel leading to a drop of about 12 blocks or more, weakening mobs for easy collection [4:2]. Adding water at the bottom can help transport loot to a collection point
[4:3].
Advanced Designs and Resources
For more advanced designs, consider checking out tutorials from popular creators like SethBling and ilmango, who offer efficient and well-tested mob farm designs [1:1]
[1:2]. Additionally, community resources such as Reddit threads and YouTube videos can provide step-by-step guides and visual aids
[4:5].
Troubleshooting Tips
If your mob grinder isn't working effectively, ensure it's built in an optimal location, such as above an ocean or desert biome, and make sure you're positioned correctly when AFK (just under 128 blocks above the lowest point of the farm) [5:1]. Also, check if nearby biomes might be affecting spawn rates and adjust accordingly

I have owned Minecraft for years but never really played in survival. I only ever used to play in creative with my bros building all kinds of weird and wacky stuff.
Recently however I've been playing a survival that we have and it's been going very well.
I've got loads of stone and wood and whatnot at my disposal. But I want to make a mob grinder.
Please could you grace me with your designs?
ilmango's overworld mob farm on YouTube is a great starting point if you want item drops.
That sounds ideal. I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion
Try looking up SethBlings most recent mob grinder. Cheap and easy. Built 1 level in mine and it works like a champ
Thank you
I just want something simple I can make in my survival world
Watch youtube. Turtorials there.
none were helpful, which is why I came here
Oh. What mot?
Anyone know how to make a simple mob grinder? I made one about 5 years ago but I forgot how to do it.
some more specifics:
build the outside dimensions of the box 20x20. then inside build four 8x8 platforms with a channel two blocks wide between the platforms.
in these channels put water sources at the edges. the water will naturally flow towards the center and stop just at the edge of a 2x2 area.
this 2x2 area is the drop chamber. dig this down ~25 blocks.
the mobs spawn on the 8x8 platforms and walk into the water streams that carry them to the drop.
you can make as many vertical layers as you like although you will start getting diminishing returns after a certain point.
people say you need to build it in the sky, but mine is at ground level with the kill floor ~25 blocks underground. it might be more efficient if it were up in the sky and if i AFK'd exactly where the math says i should be AFK. but honestly i just build one at ground level in my base and then just go about my day, it will slowly but surely fill up with mob drops.
my latest fresh start i built one as described above, 20x20 with four 8x8 platforms, at ground level. i never "AFKed" at the farm but may have been AFKing at a nearby AFK fish farm. it provided me with enough arrows to eventually kill the ender dragon.
You need to make a big closed off box in the sky that the mobs can spawn in. In the middle of box make a cross or a plus going from one end to the other. Fill with water overlapping a hole in the middle. Cover the middle with signs so the water goes over the signs but does not go below them. Then you have to figure out how far the mobs can fall and have half a heart left. Put the box so that they fall that height. Make sure they can't get out from the bottom and just kill them.
Thank you
Water ->>> water elevator->>> kill chamber
Dig out a flat space 2 blocks below it, and have it go 8 blocks in one direction, and at the end of that build at drop off area of about 12 ish blocks (I think it can go to like 23 or something though). Then put water at the opposite end of the drop. If done successfully, whenever a mob spawns, the water will push them down the hole, the fall will weaken then, then you can make a hole to hit the mobs through. This was hard to put into writing, so if you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
So I started off already mining down, and thought about having a bunch of droppers down there arranged to take the loot to a chest but I could do a design similar to yours by adding the water at the bottom
Good idea! Actually, on my realm, I have a system set up so the zombies drown and drop all items they had, so I get free armor and tridents as well as a grinder.
Use ilmango’s design. It gets the most out of spawners since they’re only good early-game
Damn it's that obvious im early game?
this is the one that I’m currently using. It’s pretty efficient. I’m not entirely sure if it’s the best, but it’s pretty damn good
i built this mob grinder but it isn't working. help please
I built one and think I might be too close to the river "biome" since I'm in taiga. I also think ill need to test in hard mode.
That’s cause it’s a pretty bad design. Build one that uses water flushing the mobs off the platforms and build it above an ocean or desert. Then pillar up till you’re just under 128 blocks above the lowest point of the farm to afk
I think they can’t spawn in water
(Vote is ending in 500 minutes)
So I don't watch much YouTube stuff about Minecraft if that's not evident by this question. I tried placing a piston to crush mobs at the bottom of a 1x1 hole but they just pass through the piston.
I then thought maybe they can only be affected by physical blocks not just the extension of a block, so I put a sticky piston behind a block of dirt which the mobs just went straight through as well.
How do you all make these mob farms, and why aren't mobs affected by blocks pushed into them by pistons?
A wolf at the bottom of a 23 block hole I think and let the wolf kill them but it has to be taimed idk if you can do it if it is sitting so it does not teleport to you but creepers would probably be a no no bc they might blow up and kill the wolf idk about the mobs and piston thing also I think it counts as a player killing it so you get xp
you can use a magma block as the floor block of the hole. this will kill them eventually.
Will it destroy any dropped items?
no, but the collection system will use a hopper minecart
http://prntscr.com/10ns19c it could look like this
Campfires or magma blocks will kill mobs and the items will just be dropped, then you can use a hopper minecart to pick them
So I'm trying to make a mob grinder that I can be afk while at work. It's really just for the drops but I've tried a couple different ways that aren't working. Anyone have any suggestions on how to kill the mobs? Hardcore 1.17.1
Try soul camfires
Worked perfect! I had completely forgotten all the soul stuff was even in the game, thabks!
Use a trident killer if that works on java
should i make it underground or up in the air? building it at the sky limit would be easier, but more ugly (i would have to dig out a very large area to make it underground)
You need to specify Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, since the mechanics are different.
bedrock, but i wish i had java
There are countless tutorials, are you looking for pure XP or drops
xp mostly, but both
Build it high over an ocean
Build a fence, bring cows/sheep/chickens/pigs and breed them
im talking about hostile mobs, and its a mob grinder not breeder(mob grinder basicaly spawns them then kills them automaticaly
Sky limit is 100% better.
So I'll be following etho's mob design and I have 2 questions:
Is there any better design than Etho's?
What is the best y level for building the farm itself? Do the spawn rate changes when you go lower (aka bedrock)
The y level is irrelevant for spawns.
As for a better design than Etho's old school mobavator, I made a multi-level version without dead spots (they could still get stuck, but only very briefly) on an SMP server I played on back in the day. Unfortunately between me and the old admin, we both had hard drives crash over the years and have lost the map and I don't recall exactly how I did the water flow on the lead-in to the mobavator, but it was pretty complex and took a lot of experimenting. I kind of had to do a multi-level version in order to get enough spawn spots for it to work well with other players elsewhere on the server; SMP has a shared mob cap across the entire server.
How to build a mob grinder in minecraft
Building a Mob Grinder in Minecraft: Key Considerations
Location: Choose a suitable location, preferably high above ground to maximize spawn rates and minimize interference from other mobs.
Mob Spawning Platforms: Create multiple layers of platforms (3-4 blocks high) where mobs can spawn. Each platform should have a 2-block high ceiling to prevent larger mobs from spawning.
Water Channels: Use water to push mobs towards a central drop shaft. Place water sources at the back of each platform, allowing water to flow towards the edges.
Drop Shaft: Create a vertical drop shaft (at least 22 blocks deep) to ensure mobs take enough fall damage to be killed upon landing. You can also add a killing mechanism at the bottom (like lava or a player-activated trap).
Killing Mechanism: Decide how you want to kill the mobs. Options include:
Collection System: Set up a collection system at the bottom using hoppers and chests to gather drops. Ensure the area is well-lit to prevent other mobs from spawning.
AFK Spot: Create a designated area where you can stand to keep the grinder active without being in danger.
Recommendation: A simple design is to build a 3x3 spawning platform with water flowing into a 2x2 drop shaft. This design is efficient and easy to construct, making it great for beginners. Additionally, consider using a looting sword to maximize your drops when collecting items from the grinder.
