How to Make a Mob Farm in Minecraft

TL;DR

  • Use platforms with water channels to funnel mobs into a drop shaft.
  • Consider using YouTube tutorials for specific designs and updates.

General Purpose Mob Farms

A general-purpose mob farm can be built by creating a series of platforms where mobs spawn, surrounded by water channels that guide them into a central drop shaft. This method is effective as it uses the natural wandering behavior of mobs to funnel them into a killing area [4:1]. The key components include:

  1. Platforms: Build four 8x8 platforms in a square formation with 2-wide channels between each.
  2. Water Channels: Place water in these channels to direct mobs towards the center.
  3. Drop Shaft: Ensure the fall distance is sufficient to either kill mobs on impact or weaken them for easy dispatching.

Spawner-Based Farms

If you have access to a spawner, you can create a more controlled environment by digging out the area around the spawner and using water to push spawned mobs into a killing chamber. This method is particularly useful for farming specific types of mobs like skeletons or zombies [4:2].

Location Considerations

Building your mob farm over an ocean or high up in the sky can improve efficiency by reducing the need to light up surrounding areas and caves to prevent other mobs from spawning [2:6]. Avoid building over river biomes, as only drowned and aquatic mobs will spawn there [2:5], [2:8].

Resources and Tutorials

For detailed instructions and visual guides, YouTube is an excellent resource. Channels like SilentWhisperer offer tutorials specifically tailored for Bedrock Edition, which may differ from Java Edition due to changes in mob spawning mechanics [2:2], [2:3]. It's important to ensure that any tutorial you follow is recent and applicable to the current version of Minecraft.

Additional Tools

Consider using mods like FoxyNoTail's Markers Pack to visualize mob spawn spheres, which can help optimize the size and placement of your mob farm [2:4].

By following these guidelines and utilizing available resources, you can build an efficient and productive mob farm in Minecraft.

Best way to make a mob farm?

The title is self explanatory. I want to make a mob farm. I tried google, but it didn’t tell me much about bedrock and it didn’t even give clear instructions. I never made a mob farm before, so I need help.

What is the best way to make a mob farm? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

The best way is to search YouTube for "bedrock mob farm". Make sure it is a relatively recent video since mob spawning changed within the last year. Also make sure that bedrock is in the title or video description. Look in the comments and make sure there is a comment within the last couple months that says "still works in 1.21"

SilentWhisperer on YouTube has the best mob farms. If you can get a few tridents then his creeper farm is the best. Repairs tools from completely broken to full health in about 2 minutes. That’s about as good as it gets on bedrock without building a guardian farm. By the way, his guardian farm is ridiculous too, but very hard to build.

there's a simple mod FoxyNoTail's Markers Pack, it shows you mob spawn spheres around the marker, which is helpful for aligning the size of mob farms optimally in regards to their spawn distance from a player

Only drown zombies and aquatic stuff spawns in river biomes. No creepers or skeletons

Google scaffold based mob farm! Or the new creeper farm just leave out the buttons and trapdoors on the ceiling and everything will spawn!

This, and over an ocean or in the sky. Unless you want to light up all the surrounding area and caves lol

Some time back I saw a tutorial on how to make a mob farm. That's not what it was called. You basically took a 4x4 shaft way up built a big floor then made a ceiling. You then used water to funnel all spawning enemies down the shaft killing them. What is this called? I want to look up the tutorial again.

Yes I know there are ways to do this with mod spawners but I don't want to find one and build around it. I want this near my home base.

There's two simple methods.

  1. find a spawner and dig it out a bit deeper, then use water to push the mobs into a killing chamber where you can kill then with your sword. A killing chamber is just a little hole where you can hit the mobs but they can't hit you. This video will show you how https://youtu.be/_1y8kQ7Jvbk

  2. Can't really explain that well but it's really simple. It's like a long tube in the sky that mobs fall down and die from fall damage in. Look at this video https://youtu.be/1Bn4OvmdFG4

just build four 8x8 platforms in a square with a 2-wide channel between each platform. put water in the channels that funnel towards the center. put a roof and walls over it. bam. mobs spawn on the platforms, they wander around, they fall in the water, water takes them to the center, they fall in a hole. if the fall is long enough, they die and drop their items. if the fall is not long enough they fall and just stand around. if the fall is just the right length, they will get injured to the point where you can just slap them dead.

Hi! I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to make a mob farm? I’m new to Redstone and all the online tutorials are confusing or years old. I’m planning to make this on a mcpe survival world where all my so far builds are medieval themed so I’m hoping this is is something I could hide underground or build around easily. Thank you!

If you have a mob spawner, then dig a 3X3 hole underneath and water all around to push mobs into the hole. Then at the bottom of the hole, make an area to collect mobs so that you can kill them. I hope this makes sense!

You can use Redstone to make a mob farm but your don't have too, just make a large dark room with some water streams that mobs will walk in after they spawn and then have it lead to a pit, and if you want to store it use hoppers connected to chests

how do you make a mob farm?

Posted by chastalia · in r/Minecraft · 4 years ago

im going to sound very silly here but i've tried multiple different ways and none of them seem to be working? big cobblestone towers; utilizing cave spider spawners e.t.c.

i even went all the way up to hard mode to see if it increased spawns and, atfer around 6 minecraft days - still no mob spawns. in all 6 days i went up by 2 levels. is there something i'm missing? does anybody know any good, helpful tips for mob spawners that dont take too much redstone?

sorry if this against the rules; i read through them again and i don't think it is. thanks if you can help i've been having a lot of trouble with this :)

For the dark box towers: The spot where you afk/wait is very important. Mobs won’t spawn if you’re closer than I think 24 blocks or farther than 128 (my numbers may be slightly off). If it’s set up where you’re standing farther than 128 from the ground, that keeps ground and cave mobs from spawning, increasing rates in the farm.

For spawner farms: You have to be within 16 blocks of the spawner for it to spawn mobs. You can set up a water stream to carry mobs out of the spawner room, but make sure the end point where you kill them is still within 16 blocks so mobs keep spawning.

You have to make sure there is absolutly no light, and you have to be quite far of the spawner for it to work, another thing you can try is reducing your chunk render for as low as posible, this decreses spawns of mobs in other places besides your farm

This farm is great in will probably produce more than enough items for your needs.

But a tip for the future: This general mobfarm design is fantastic, but you kinda built it the wrong way round with farm vs afk spot.

The better way to run this farm would be to build it so the hoppers the mobs fall on are just above the ground, maybe even sunk into the ground (tho in that case you'd have to light up the area around it). Then you need to afk on top of the farm exactly 127-128 blocks above them. That way mobs will still only be able to spawn in your farm, but you are also taking advantage of a lower y-value.

In java, the lower down in the world the highest block of that specific x and z coordinate are, the faster the spawns will be. For example if you build a mobfarm 50 blocks over bedrock, it will be roughly twice as fast as the same farm 100 blocks over bedrock.

Essentially, by building your farm all the way at the build limit, you made the farm as slow as it is possible for this specific design to be. If you had built it with the hoppers at y65, it would probably be twice as fast.

I just built one of these in my world, and spent a while AFK - came back to nothing in the chests and confusion.

Did a bit of checking everything, and it turns out I'd built my AFK platform 2 blocks too high, so the campfires were 130 blocks down. I Used freecam and could see all the mobs despawning just before they hit the fire.

Quickly dropped the platform down, and now I have more gunpowder than I think I'll ever need for my single player world.

Anyway i can improve this mob farm?

Posted by taso_niru · in r/MinecraftBedrockers · 1 month ago

I eventually want to make a dispenser with arrows in it and let the dispenser do the rest.

Is this viable? The only problem, will i get the arrows back? If not, im better off just doing what i am doing at the moment

I thought Minecraft had a mob spawn limit? How did so many skeletons spawn lol

Either way, this is EZ XP. My pickaxe is already STACKED & done with mending, unbreaking 3 & efficiency 3. Sharpness 5 on my Divine Light is all i need, i have Looting 3 & knockback 2.

Technically i already have it cause i have 2 sharpness 4 enchant books, i just didn't have the levels.

After that ill work on my diamond armor. Then I've beaten the game.

Any tips would help alot plz

How to make a mob farm in minecraft

Creating a Mob Farm in Minecraft: Key Considerations

  1. Location: Choose a suitable location for your mob farm. Ideally, it should be away from other spawnable areas (at least 128 blocks away) to maximize mob spawning.

  2. Mob Type: Decide which mobs you want to farm. Common choices include zombies, skeletons, and creepers. Each mob has different spawning conditions.

  3. Design: There are various designs for mob farms:

    • Water-Based Farms: Use water to push mobs into a collection area. This is effective for ground-based mobs.
    • Dark Room Farms: Create a large, dark enclosed space where mobs can spawn. Ensure the area is well-lit outside to prevent other mobs from spawning nearby.
    • Sky Farms: Build a platform high in the sky to spawn mobs. This can be effective for both ground and flying mobs.
  4. Collection System: Implement a collection system to gather drops. This can be done using hoppers connected to chests or by using water streams to funnel items to a central location.

  5. Killing Mechanism: Decide how you want to kill the mobs:

    • Fall Damage: Build a drop chute that causes mobs to fall and take damage.
    • Lava: Use lava blades to kill mobs instantly.
    • Player Kills: Design the farm so you can manually kill mobs for experience.
  6. AFK Spot: Create a safe area where you can stand to keep the farm active while you’re away. This should be far enough away to allow mobs to spawn but close enough to keep the farm running.

Recommendation: A simple and effective design is the "Water Trap" farm for ground mobs. Build a 9x9 platform, add water channels to push mobs to a central hole, and place hoppers below to collect drops. This design is easy to build and works well for beginners.

Tip: Always ensure your farm is well-lit outside to prevent other mobs from spawning and reducing efficiency.
