How to Choose Products for Dropshipping

Understanding Product Demand and Saturation

A key aspect of selecting a dropshipping product is understanding its demand and saturation. You should look for products with a unique selling proposition (USP) that solve a problem or have a "wow" factor [2:1], [5:1]. It's important to check how saturated the market is for each product by using tools like Facebook Graph Search, Google image search, and keyword search [2:1]. While some suggest avoiding saturated markets entirely, others argue that if you can market a product better than competitors, it might still be worth pursuing [2:6], [2:7].

Research Tools and Methods

Several tools and methods can assist in product research. SEMRush and Ubersuggest are recommended for checking search volume and keyword difficulty to find niches with high demand but low competition [1:3], [1:4]. Dropshipscan is another tool mentioned for finding trending products and assessing their profit margins [2:3], [5:2]. Additionally, observing organic trends on platforms like TikTok and Amazon can provide insights into current consumer interests [1:2].

Product Characteristics

From a supplier's perspective, ideal dropshipping products should be small in volume to reduce shipping costs and relatively inexpensive to ensure affordability [3]. These characteristics help mitigate logistical challenges and make the products more appealing to a broader audience.

Testing and Validation

Before committing to a product, it's crucial to test it yourself. Ordering samples allows you to assess the quality firsthand and create authentic marketing materials [1:5]. This step helps avoid selling subpar products that could harm your brand's reputation.

Niche Selection and Competitive Analysis

Identifying less crowded niches can improve your chances of success. Start by listing potential niche ideas and use tools to check their search demand [1:4]. While competition indicates demand, too much of it can be detrimental. Use Google Shopping to gauge the level of competition and aim for niches with over 20k monthly searches [1:4].

In summary, choosing the right product for dropshipping involves thorough research, understanding market dynamics, and testing products before launching them. By leveraging various tools and focusing on unique, unsaturated products, you can increase your chances of building a successful dropshipping business.

What's the best way to go about deciding on a product? I'm new to drop-shipping, done some research but obviously nothing that experience would teach me. Right now I'm looking for a low cost set-up (less than $150) before I learn the inevitable lessons and will then invest more.
So as things stand, how do i pick the "right" product? TikTok Ads, CJ product list, or what?

Totally get where you’re coming from — that early stage is overwhelming with so much advice floating around. The truth is, there’s no perfect product right out the gate. What matters more is choosing something with clear demand, solving a real problem, and learning as you go.

If you’re on a tight budget, I’d say avoid paid ads at first (like TikTok Ads) — they can burn your cash fast if the product or site isn’t dialed in. Instead, look at organic trends (TikTok search, Amazon bestsellers, even Reddit threads). Then validate it with platforms like CJdropshipping or similar.

I also used AIStoreBuilder to help speed things up — it gives AI-backed suggestions for store setup, product page layout, and even copy. Really helpful when you're trying to make your first $150 stretch as far as possible without wasting time on guesswork.

Best advice? Start small, learn fast, and don’t be afraid to test and tweak. You’ll gain more from the process than from chasing a “winning” product early on.

Bro you have clearly not done enough research.

Use a tool to gauge how highly searched a product is and what the difficulty is, this will tell you if it's tough and saturated or fresh.

Ship products to yourself and test it before putting it in your store. Selling junk is a fast way to burn all your effort to the ground. I don't care if you're a gym rat dude selling women's lingerie or kids toys, you buy that crap and test it rigorously. This will help you make ads and web collateral selling your product. If you are selling, idk, rocking horses, and you found the coolest effing rocking horse with little janglies inside that make a cool galloping noise, now you can use that in your marketing. If you are selling mens bracelets and you test it putting it in salt water 3 days and it doesn't rust, you can use that.

And for the love of God don't get into fashion.

I know I haven't done enough research. That's exactly what my question was: HOW do I do that research? Not "Tell me what product what you sell"
I don't want to waste 11 hours on a Youtube crash course on how to get rich quick with dropshipping.

That said, trying various products before deciding to sell one does sound very important. Thanks for the tip!

The bigger tip is the first part, to get SEMRush or something similar and look at search volume and KW difficulty. Only test suppliers and products once you have used that to settle on a niche. For any 1 product you could wanna sell, there are 5000 sellers on any platform, and volume of sales or reviews is not a good indicator of quality.

Find something that has been searched a lot on Google but has a low difficulty and you will not be in a saturated market.

Finding a product is the simple part.

How often is it searched? Thats your TAM.

Let's say that you find that, idk, breast pumps are great. High searches, low competition. Awesome. You then look for related products that can increase your TAM. Nursing nipple shields and lanolin cream and silicone breast milk storage bags. In finding those related products you have increased your TAM, the pool of people you can get your first sale with, and have made remarketing easier. When you have ancillary products and a good email campaign, you can get 20 percent of your customers to come back every month.

So, what you kinda want is a great product that is somewhat cheap to get that first sale. Then bigger and better products to get people coming back month after month. If you delivered a good product the first time, the conversion is muuuch easier.

Start by spotting niches around you or online that aren't too crowded. List down like 10-50 ideas. Check for strong brand presence..if it's crowded, skip it. Look for unique stuff..less competition is better.Use tools like ubersuggest to see search demand. Aim for niches with over 20k monthly searches. Watch out for seasonal trends; you might want products that sell year-round.Competition's not always bad; it shows demand. Use Google Shopping to gauge it. Keep it simple, learn from it, and you'll be ready to invest more down the line. since you’re new, i’d definitely check out trevor zheng’s yt channel. helped me a ton. :)

How to find the right product to dropship?

I always have trouble choosing the right product. As someone who lives a minimalist lifestyle i don't buy things online that often other than the stuff i need. So how do i make sure i can select a product just by numbers alone. If anyone can tell me any unique product research methods that will be very helpful. Ty in advance.

Don’t reinvent the wheel. If you are new then copy something that sells already and learn the basics of how to do it.

When you get more experience then you can scan AliExpress or whatever supplier you have and find products that will sell

Not that new i can say i know the basics pretty well. I am good at emotional selling too. But the problem is that i spend way too much time on the product selection step. As i said i don't buy things often so my brain says no when i see a random product. Im looking for a reliable way to identify good products without me getting in the middle of it.

On a very broad level, there are two parts of product research for dropshipping: USP and Saturation.

Go through whatever source you are using, be it AliExpress or Facebook or something else.

Step 1:

Open a Google Doc and start recording everything which has some sort of USP, give it a title according to USP and don't overthink it. You're not going to test all these products.

Step 2:

Now check each product for saturation. You can use Facebook Graph Search, Google image and keyword search or some other tool.

Now you have a list of unsaturated products with some sort of USP. Get everything else you need to craft a great offer and you're ready to go :)

Should i stay away from the saturated products completely? If there is demand for the product and i can sell it better than my competitors then shouldn't i go for it?
My first good product was like this.

Do what works for you. Saturation happens on multiple levels and there is always an unsaturated element to be discovered. As you said, If you can market it better, come up with a different angle then give it a try. You can also try different audience, difference traffic sources, and many other elements.

See where your strength lies and do more of that. I just like having as many advantages on my end as possible and having a new product is probably the biggest one for me.

How to select a good product? Some basic theory from a supplier point of view.

Posted by bohongwang · in r/dropship · 27 days ago

First of all for this article I will put in some of our own companies' quotation in it. But it's just show as an example so people can get the general ideas as for what product is good for dropshipping. If you don't like this you are already warned and you can leave now.
What product is good for dropshipping?

In a supplier's point of view, the ideal product best to be:
(1) small in volume, because for international shipping restrictions, if you have bulky items you are going to be overcharged for shipping

(2) relatively cheap cost and around 1:3 ratio for "cost of goods" compare to the actual sale price.

For example if you have a product selling for 30$, then your total cost of goods including product and shipping should be around 10$, this gives you essential also 1/3 of the sale price as marketing cost. So eventually leaving you 1/3 as profit to continue to grow your business and earn.

(3) Fast shipping, local storage if possible.

People are alreayd spoiled by Amazon and 2-3 days shipping time is best, people tend to look at how long it takes for the product to arrive a lot of times now. If you can also have 2-3 days, you will have a much bigger advantage compare to other sellers.

This point is an point I just got from the community but it's really good:

(4) Pratical items that actually helps solve people's problems.

So whenever you are selecting a product for your next venture, you can think about these 4 points and they all fit then it will have a higher chance of sale for sure.

Here's a product example for your reference, https://ibb.co/6jLJwGm

After you taking a look at the link, I will analyze will this product is good.

Reddit seems can't upload picutres directly so I upload an image. This is one of the product we have in our US warehouse and this is essentially a perfume that solves people's smell problem. Sometimes it also serves as a "decoration" before people go to their dates or just daily uses. So this definitly fits the 4th point as practical.

Then it's small, and with its cheap cost, we can easily sell this perfume over 21$ in the US for sure. So this also fits the first and second option.

As for the third option, this is product that can ship to anywhere in the US for just 2-3 business days excluding remote area of course. So this product fit all the 4 points we just covered here! Let me know if you have any more questions regarding how to pick a winning product.

When you can work with a company that can provide local dropshipping service, then the thrid option can be solved quite easily, even when the product you are dropshipping right now don't have local stock, they can usually get your product stocked at US warehouse by sea and still dropship at a fairly cheap cost.

That's all for now about how to pick a good product for droshipping. This is Steve from CrossBorderStudio.com.
Thanks for reading!

Bye!

What checklist do you guys follow when choosing a product to dropship?

Posted by [deleted] · in r/dropship · 5 years ago

So after failing at my first store, I realized it's because of my product which I didn't do much research on and just modeled it on a competitor who funnily enough took down the product a few hours after my store went live.

I've done a bit of research and got down 3 products with a lot of orders on Ali, but don't know which to choose for a single product store.

Get familiar with the fb ad library first of all

Try keywords related to pain, desires or types of products and scroll.

And read breakthrough advertising to understand a bit better what to look for in the ads you see.

Just start there, warm up your brain!

And a winning product is one that’s validated, not unsaturated. Keep that in mind. Marketing > product.

Hey! If you’re trying to find a winning product, the first thing is to figure out your business model, like, are you going for high-ticket or low-ticket dropshipping?

Once you’ve got that down, just start brainstorming ideas. You can use tools like ChatGPT or even mess around with a random word generator to come up with stuff. Jot down a bunch of ideas, then do a bit of research to see what has demand, low competition, and decent profit margins.

Don’t just go for whatever’s trending or viral, look at actual data and check out other stores to see what they’re selling and how they’re presenting it.

The best products usually solve a problem people care about and leave enough room for you to make a profit. Once you’ve got a few solid options, try testing them out in your store and see what sticks.

Also, YouTube’s super helpful, I’ve picked up a lot just watching creators like Marcus. He breaks things down in a simple, no-BS way, which helps when you’re starting.

How to choose a product?

Posted by BobbyJenkinsPlays · in r/dropship · 5 years ago

So I'm brand new to dropshipping. Me and my friend are going to start dropshipping together. I have a ton of questions but I figured first things first, how the hell do I choose my specific product?

After some research (not a lot, to be fair, but like 5 Google's and maybe 20 guides/videos read/watched) I have heard that I should target impulse buys that people will gladly overpay for, but no one gave any examples. Obviously I'm not asking anyone to tell me exactly what to sell, but what are some examples of what type of things would work.

Like would something like RGB lights work?

Because that's the best I have thought of so far, people will be drawn to them for sure, but I have no clue if people will actually buy it. I have never been someone to impulse buy so I don't really know.

Any help is appreciated

Thanks guys :)

I did an ad but then cancelled it I thought no one will pay for it. Yesterday I open droppoint and oh my god someone is doing an ad with the same product and he has over 1m views in a few days. do some research about people complaining that delivery times are so bad during the covid-19 crisis that they're losing money from customer cancellations, charge reversals, etc - utter hell. there's plenty of this on reddit.

also keep in mind that the "shopify-aliexpress" "overcharging for crap coming from china" type of dropshipping is utterly oversaturated and dead. not only have delivery times multiplied to beyond months (!!!) but often there's other problems. i even read a post on here saying the customer received a "sorry" note instead of the product. the aliexpress suppliers are absolutely running every trick in the book to make a quick buck. the whole thing is collapsing.

a better option is to find something sourced locally that can reach the customer in under a month. keep in mind that everyone is doing this, so the competition is high if you're all selling the same exact products as each other.

the best option is to create your own unique products sourced locally. that way the delivery times are short and there's no competition for the exact same product.

Product Selection

Hey everyone,

I've been looking into dropshipping over the past month and went to give it a go.

I've had some issue pulling the trigger on the product to ship. I've applied criteria and have a few items that I could choose, but I'm concerned about releasing another product into an oversaturated market.

I understand that you want there to be a market demand there already, but how do you know what product to choose and what makes you confident in picking it?

For example, let's say a gua sha roller for my criteria. Would I just have to make sure I market it better than everyone else and spend more on ads to make sure it's seen?

Read this, u/theautobahn:

https://www.reddit.com/r/dropshipping/comments/1mdlhim/how_to_start_an_ecommerce_business_a_genuinely/

I recommend taking a bit longer on the education front before getting started. If you've focused your education on 'dropshipping' chances are your head is full of lots of generalisations, simplifications, misguided expectations, and 'trust me bro' kinda of stuff. That's what the bros put forward on YouTube to lure you in to hopefully buy their courses and coaching programs. Focus now on learning the tried and and tested business fundamentals and let this knowledge, as boring and less bright 'n' shiny as it is, act as a BS filter for all the trash you've learnt about dropshipping.

The fact that you're considering a gua sha roller shows you're in the wrong territory already. A random, somewhat, gimmicky product, you can buy from a gazillion different retailers already? As a retailer, is there really a gap for you to address and an opportunity to do something new, different, and/or better? Probably not.

This is why, in the post I linked to above, I recommend studying a heap of brands and retailers you like, and watching some episodes of Shark Tank and Dragon's Den. Understand how real, successful business start. And really is that 'find a gap, address the gap in a compelling and robust way' kind of approach.

1 upvotes on reddit
theautobahn · OP · 15 days ago

I appreciate you responding and will read that thread.

Just to clarify, I'm not considering the gua-sha roller, I just used that as an example for my question. However, your reply does kind of address my concern in that I should try to ensure that the product isn't a gimmick or plastic waste and will address a gap in a market.

Totally get it — product selection feels like the hardest part when you’re starting, but the truth is it’s less about finding the “perfect” product and more about how you market it. A few things that might help:

  • Avoid super saturated products → Gua sha rollers, resistance bands, posture correctors — these have been spammed to death. Not impossible, but you’ll need a really unique angle/creative to stand out.
  • Look for angles, not just products → Sometimes the difference is in how you position it. For example, instead of just “gua sha roller,” maybe it’s marketed as a stress-relief ritual for students or a premium self-care gift set.
  • Testability matters → Pick products you can test quickly/cheaply with ads. Don’t overinvest up front.
  • Confidence comes from data → Check engagement on TikTok/FB/IG for that niche. If you see organic videos still pulling views and people commenting “where do I buy,” that’s a green light.
  • Your creative > the product → A good ad angle beats a “unique” product every time. People don’t buy because they’ve never seen it before, they buy because your ad hit an emotional trigger.

So to answer your example: yes, you could run with a gua sha roller, but you’d need killer creatives, strong branding, and probably better offers (bundles, upsells). Otherwise you’ll get buried.

If you want a solid breakdown on product research frameworks (what to look for beyond “is it saturated”), Trevor Zheng has a good YouTube video that goes into it without the fluff.

^ this. works every time.

But seriously, the only the way to find a winning product is to immerse yourself in the market and see what is trending and selling. After watching the market, you should get a better idea of the type of product that takes off. But thinking hard only gets you so far! Invest some money and take a risk on some products you think will sell and build a store. You can do it!

Yo, heres the best advice youll get in my strong honest opinion. Go to Youtube and search 'Winning Products' and filter by new. What filtering by new does is shows you all the smaller channels that introduce dropship info and have really no following. I've come across at least 30 potential winning products to choose from by doing that.

Alright, I'll try this out for sure, thanks for the advice.

How to find winning products? Here are some strategies!

Posted by [deleted] · in r/dropship · 5 years ago

First of all, thank you so much for all the appreciation on my previous post, absolutely loved seeing people benefitting from that. Click here if you haven’t seen that post yet.

So, what are winning products? where to find them and why do people struggle with that?

In the dropshipping business, a winner products is said to be a products which is loved by your target audience in your niche and sells like CRAZY! Once you find a winning products in your niche and you’re making good sales out of it, chances are that your confidence level will boost through the roof and you’ll finally have faith and a sense of security in this business.

Is it easy to find winning products? No. Are there some strategies to find them? Yes.

Where to find your winning product?

Now that you know what a winning product is and what it can do to your business, you would naturally like to know where to find them, right?

So here are some strategies that me and my agency has used in the past to find a winning product, mind you, not every product you think is a winner ends up selling crazy. Testing is everything.

Strategy #1- The Facebook strategy

To find winning products on Facebook , use its search box. Just type in some generic words that you see on most of the facebook ads, for example- Type “50% Off”, ”Click on shop now”, “Just pay shipping”, “Get yours now”, “Limited supply” etc. Now, you can see both text/image ads as well as videos ads. Once you have typed in the keywords, go to the date filter and select the current month and year or you can go with a month earlier too. This way, you’ll know what kind of ads are running the most in this current month and year and you’ll get an idea of kind of products that a lot of people are advertising. IF you already have your niche selected then you can add the niche name before they search keywords, for example- “hiking 50% off”, “dog collar 50% off” etc. Found a bitly link? Go to google, poste the link and add “+” sign after the link, you’ll get to see the stats ;)

Now that you have found the products whose are ads are being run the most, you have to verify it and see for yourself if they’re actually selling well. Which brings us on our strategy #2

Strategy #2- The AliExpress strategy

So you’ve searched on Facebook and found some potential winning products because of the amount of ads being run for them. How do you verify them? This strategy is basically to verify the products and see for yourself whether the products are actually winners or not. You search for the products on AliExpress and filter them by no. of orders. Now, see the no. of orders and what the reviews are. Generally winner products have 1k+ orders and a 4.5-4.9+ star review. You look for yourself, verify these numbers and now you know for sure that these products are actually selling like hot cakes.

Alternatively you can also search some niche in Aliexpress and do the same steps mentioned above. Ex- Search for iPhone cases, filter them by no. of orders and you’ll know what kind of phone cases are selling well.

Strategy #3- The URL strategy

This is used when you need to find a winning product on a successful dropshipping site. So, you stumble upon a general dropshipping store via google search or Facebook ads, the store has tons of products but you don’t know which product is selling the best or is a winner? Do this, you click on the URL of the store and put this at the end of the URL- /collections/all?sort_by=best-selling

This will sort the products in such a way, that their best selling products will appear in order. You can then verify those by using Strategy #2

Strategy #4- The Google Trend strategy

The google trend strategy is used when you don’t know what niche to go for. You got 2-3 niches in mind and you’re passionate about all of them but don’t know what niche is trending? Go to https://trends.google.com/trends/?geo=US type your niche, use the location and time rangefilter(preferred location-US,UK,Australia,Canada)(preferred time range- last 30 days). You’ll then see the graph. If the blue line of the graph is increasing, then go for it.

Although there are other several method of finding winning products, we generally use the ones above for our clients to find winning products for their stores.

AGAIN, testing is everything. Not every product showing good signs ends up selling well. It all comes down to your targeting and your ad copy/creative.

Hope you found value in this post as well. Post your queries down below and I’ll try my best to solve them. You can inbox me any time if you want my team to review your store.

What about spy tools? They can save you a ton of time and money.
There are popular ones like Minea and Pipiads, but I’d go for less crowded options. Check out spytrends.net, for example. They spot winning products in real-time using sales data. I found my last two Meta winners there after weeks of struggling with more popular tools like Minea and Pipiads.

how to choose products for dropshipping

Key Considerations for Choosing Dropshipping Products

  1. Market Research:

    • Identify trending products using tools like Google Trends, social media, and e-commerce platforms.
    • Analyze competitors to see what products are performing well.
  2. Niche Selection:

    • Focus on a specific niche to target a defined audience. This can help reduce competition and build a loyal customer base.
    • Ensure the niche has sufficient demand and is not overly saturated.
  3. Profit Margins:

    • Calculate potential profit margins by considering wholesale prices, shipping costs, and retail prices.
    • Aim for a minimum profit margin of 20-30% to ensure sustainability.
  4. Supplier Reliability:

    • Choose suppliers with a good reputation for quality and reliability. Platforms like AliExpress, Oberlo, or SaleHoo can be useful.
    • Check reviews and ratings of suppliers to ensure they can meet your quality and shipping expectations.
  5. Shipping Times:

    • Consider the shipping times from suppliers to your target market. Faster shipping can lead to higher customer satisfaction.
    • Look for suppliers that offer ePacket shipping or similar options for quicker delivery.
  6. Product Quality:

    • Order samples to assess the quality of products before listing them in your store.
    • High-quality products lead to better customer reviews and repeat business.
  7. Legal Considerations:

    • Ensure the products comply with local regulations and standards to avoid legal issues.
    • Be aware of any restrictions on certain products in your target market.

Recommendation: Start with a small selection of products to test the market before scaling up. This allows you to gauge customer interest and refine your offerings based on feedback and sales data. Use analytics tools to track performance and adjust your strategy accordingly.
